| "Things that are, and things that cannot be, call out, and blend together. They become Mononoke. To cut, to stab, to gouge, to carve, are the duties of the sword. I must learn the Mononoke's name, its shape, its Form. I must learn its stage of being, its Truth, and the state of its mind, its Regret. Then, my blade will cleanse it of its fate."
Mononoke is one of the most original shows I have ever seen to date yet. From storybook like visuals, to mysterious characters and story, which is so full of weird things and japanese mythology that sometimes is hard to follow - Mononoke offers some of the most enigmatic anime moments ever. Hmm, at least to draw some sort of image I can hint at best that Mononoke is something what you would get after combining Playstation 2 game Okami with already a pretty weird anime Mushishi. Like Mushishi Mononoke follows episodic plot development (though one story usually takes two or three episodes). Like in Mushishi, in Mononoke there is but one character, who while introducing himself as a medicine seller is actually Mononoke hunter. I'm probably not exaggerating to call him the most enigmatic main character in any anime to date yet. Even after finishing the whole show I have not got a single idea about what his motives are, who he really is and what the hell he is even thinking when smirking at people being eaten by Mononokes. Yet that doesn't mean that he is a bad character, actually he is great and even might have had the potential to become one of the best leading characters ever. However, thanks to the show's short nature and heavy story, characters are only given supporting roles to the plot that unfolds. And he fulfills his supporting role perfectly. Basically Mononoke is one of the few shows that just have to be seen to be fully understood. I highly doubt it's even possible to convey it's real atmosphere in words.
If you enjoy shows of similar nature to Mushishi, by any means, give Mononoke a shot. While it might not be as good as Mushishi it's pretty close to it. Though at the same time it's so different that you might as well like it more than Mushishi. Oh yeah, if you are interested in traditional japanese folk tales, then whoa, this show is going to be your paradise. It's like a folk tale picture book come life.

| One of the most unique series to come out of Japan in a long time. It is based on the last arc of the twelve episode long Ayakashi Mononoke.
Mononoke is divided up into different story arcs which are unrelated to each other except for the main character, the medicine seller, who is on a quest to cleanse the world by destroying Mononoke. In order to destroy a Mononoke, he must find it out its Image, Truth, and Regret. This leads to about two to three episodes of "who done it" mystery style investigation, peppered with disturbing images, before the battle between the Mononoke and the Medicine Seller commences.
Although short, it is satisfying and I recommend it to anyone who enjoys unique animation, Japanese horror, and japanese culture.

| The previous reviewer has already done well in explaining the story of the anime, so I will go ahead and give my critique of it.
Overall, the story has a strong, intriguing concept with potential to become at least fairly good. However, I found that the anime, in places, tried far too hard to be unique, to the point of it being completely distracting from the story. I enjoyed the story, however, as much as I could, considering this.
