| Shigurui is a violent tale about the swordsmanship in Japan's early XVII century. And the hard way of the sword students of martial arts had to endure at the time.
The first thing I must note is that Shigurui is extremely violent. If you thought Elfen Lied is violent, you'll think again after this show. Seriously, it's not something as cute as blood in Shigurui, it's various intensities, pieces of brain and crushed eyeballs what makes it so gory. I mean, there is even a scene where a guy cut out his opponents eyeball and eats it. Anyway, apart from its spectacular violence Shigurui trips at about everything it sets out to do. Deliberately confusing yet not compelling storyline falls apart completely at the very moment the viewer realizes it lacks its finale. Damnit, at least they could have waited for the manga to finish to make a complete version of this anime. Without an ending this show not only lacks any closure, but stops making any sense whatsoever. Characters don't save the day either, from the beginning Shigurui had only used them to tell its story (I mean, there is barely any dialogue besides japanese politeness and martial arts talk). They surely never tell anything about what they, as individuals, think. Sometimes you can notice someone smiling, but that's the biggest emotion you'll ever see in this show. Basically, with characters sacrificed for a story which in turn is not moving anywhere due to the lack of closure, the only thing Shigurui retains is its horrific quality of violence.
If the sequel with a REAL closure ever comes out, Shigurui might become a worthy watch. Yet as it stands now - watch it only if you'd like to experience violence you have never seen before.

| After reading the first two reviews I decided to watch this anime and had high hopes.
I agree with them that the animation of it was very well done. However, the music for the majority was repetitive and dull. The story was great until the end when the anime ends and you are thinking well what the hell happens? The main character only has one arm in the end but during the anime it never shows how he losses that arm???? The anime builds up to this tournament where two hated rivals are facing off, but the anime ends before even showing the fight!! So you watch the entire anime and it ends with no closure whatsoever.

| Finally another good mature "pseudo-historical" Samurai Anime playing in the edo period.
I liked it for excellent artwork, the nice cast of characters, the artsy "backward-forward" story telling and last but not least, for being a mature anime. (Gory violence and some nudity - horray!)
I didn't like how the story occasionally felt rushed and the music also did annoy me at times.
Overall very nice though, people who enjoy Vagabond or Berserk will probably like this anime.

| Pretty high rating eh? .. so lets get straight to the point
Animation/Sound
Well these two part are playinbig role in this anime just because theyre just awsome. Ive never seen so beautiful and so much deatailed animation in anime (well... i havent seen many anime). From my point of view this is not just animation..its GREAT PIEC OF ART. Sound...hmm...what could be better for historical japanese anime than traditional japanese music? ;) Together the animation and sound are creating awsome atmosphere and you should really enjoy it.
Story
I gave it only 7/10 just because it gets me sometimes very confused about whats happening there but it can be only my fault. People who are really into japanese history and culture will enjoy this 100%!
Story is very dynamic and also are the fights ..realistic(well..sometimes not really but i let you people judge it yourself), dynamic - DBZ,BLEACH and NARUTO hardcore fans wont enjoy this ..., and naturalistic as the whole anime is full of blood , breaked bones and many other kinds of violence
Value
10/10 ... i believe that soon people will realize that this is a masterpice ^^
Enjoyment
If youre interested in historical anime you should watch and i guarantee that you wont regret
That should be all ... i hope thi little review will help you decide whether to watch or not
