Sola follows Yorito as he meets a mysterious girl who may not be all she seems to be. Voted one of the best series of the year, that may be a bit of an exaggeration but it remains a worthwhile watch.

I finished watching Sola a while ago but I decided to wait and review it after I got a higher quality version (Ureshii).

Sola is a romance about a guy who meets a Yaka, a night demon (think vampire but without the blood sucking and garlic). In all, the series is magic/supernatural based and shares many themes (such as a distant past and being in sorrow/alone for a long time) with Air TV.

The storyline is nicely done and gets heavier as the story progresses. The beginning episodes are relatively light and playful but the latter episodes can get fairly intense (marathon mode).

The story gets a little complicated near the end (really didn't pick up on many of the subtleties until my second run through) and be prepared for a somewhat lack-luster conclusion.

This series is fairly serious in that there is no fan-service like ecchiness and the overall tone is slightly dark (since much of the real action takes place during the night anyways).

Overall, despite the conclusion, the series is still very well done and definitely deserves a watch.

I have finish watching Sola yesterday and after thinking about this title in night I was to say some thinks.....
First of all Animation are just wonderfull, design of character also on high level that makes warm in my hearth when I watched that title.
"Aono" IS SO KAWAII I love her from the BEGINING TO THE END!!! second place on my list takes "Matsuri"

Few works about story:
I was shocked when I discovery all secrets about life of our characters (Yorito, Matsuri and Aono) that was my first time when I met so NICE story :)

After end of series I felt like I want more.... why only 13 episode?? :(

If you like title like: Air that title is also for YOU :D trust me you wont regreat.

A sky anime ..... with drama. The first thing that comes to my mind is the anime Air. This is not Air. It's not as good as Air, but still better than what I was expected it to be.

Let me divide the animation into two categories for this anime: the backgrounds and the character designs. Backgrounds are nice and the use of actual pictures for the sky was creative. Everything else seemed to be fine as well, of course you get a lot of sky in this anime. SKY SKY SKY SKY! Then we have the character designs and their super pointy chins of doom. Go away chins of doom. Anyway, I was afraid that the characters would have poked each other if they got too close with each other. OP song is peaceful and ED song is peaceful as well. In fact this anime had a lot of peaceful songs from the insert songs they had and the background music. The voice acting was pretty good as well also.

The story starts off really slow and doesn't get better until near the end. Like the beginning is all about introducing the characters, looking at the sky, childhood relationships, looking at the sky, looking at the sky, taking pictures of the sky, you get what I mean, right? There are a few action bit scenes in this anime and those were done quite well.

The characters were either annoying or just fine. Aono was annoying and I wanted her to go away with her "I'm keeping the guy all to myself" personality. The loli girl and that old guy were boring and I didn't like them at all. (I can't remember their names, even though I just finished this series last night.) Yorito is a sky geek and all he cares about is the sky, but somehow all the girls dig that and go after him, even though he's more interested in the sky than the girls. Matsuri and Mana were the two characters I liked, so they made up for Aono and the other characters. At least the character development was good for a thirteen episode anime.

Sola is a good watch for a 13 episode anime. Some people will find this anime cliche and at some parts it was, but sometimes I just couldn't help myself from laughing when some scenes became really corny. I love cheesy things if they are done right. Though some scenes are really dramatic and those were done well. I recommend Sola due to it being only 13 episodes. Slow at the start, but gradually the pace picks up and that's when Sola starts to shine.

I openly dislike romance anime that are based upon some sort of artificial mystical or supernatural scenario. Most of the time, these animes try too hard to balance a steady romance drama while trying to develop the backstory. Sadly, Sola fits right into this categorization and fails to impress.

The main difficulty in getting into this anime was that I was not sold by Matsuri's character (the female lead). I found the beginning to be too contrived, and too coincidental. A girl who is unable to go out into the sunlight and as a result wants to see the sky meets a boy who is obsessed with the sky. Then out of some odd turn of events, she ends up living at his place (which happens to have no parents). His sister is in the hospital and his schoolmate female friend has short hair, so she has no sex appeal. To make things more humorous, Matsuri is being chased by some sort of Rozen Maiden look alike who employs this hunter to hunt after beings like Matsuri. In the end, even though we have a very oddball class of characters, the interactions are not persuasive enough to become engrossed in.

However, to be fair, if someone feels a connection with Matsuri, I could see how they might feel compelled to watch it. After all, she does emit a helpless maiden aura that may attract some. Also, if one watches the introduction with the emotional music, they might feel even more connect to Matsuri. Nevertheless, I was thrown off by the character design and did not feel too interested in this series due to my disattachment to the characters. Matsuri is cute, but the anime is not good enough to get too involved with this character.

On to the story, like I mentioned before it is a romance situation in a supernatural setting. In other words, Matsuri and Yorito live happy days together in a slice-of-life fashion where they share their feelings about the sky together, eat together, etc. Then there is the occasional drama with Yorito's sister and Mana. Then things get serious with the supernatural with Yorito right in the middle of things. Of course, Yorito is not just some random character Matsuri meets with his deep involvement in the past. Anyway, the story premise itself is not uninteresting, but rather what they decided to do with it by this huge emphasis on Yorito x Matsuri relationship.

Overall, sola creates a good atmosphere with the nice animation and music, but the story and characters failed to attract my attention. Things progress too slowly in the beginning and rush in the end, typical of 13 episode series like these. Sola is nothing too original and nothing revolutionary. The main factor that determines whether you will like this anime is Matsuri. Give this a shot and if you feel like you can watch this anime just for her, then go ahead. Otherwise, just move along to better things.

Lots of cliches. They annoy me to no end.
Personally, I don't really like the character design. All their faces are.. angular?
Backstory isn't fantastic either... I don't find them adding any value to the story...
Comparable to Air..? No offense, but I think, not in a million years.
And there are so many times you see something happen that will make you go, "huh?" Like.. *MINOR SPOILERS*

... finding a square piece of paper and instantly knowing it as Aono's origami. Does she write her name on every piece of paper she uses? Or maybe she's the only one in the whole town practising the Ancient and Mysterious Art of ORIGAMI, and has sole ownership of the world's paper supply.

... how Takeshi knows so much about returning a Yaka to human form. Is "Arcane Knowledge" a subject taught at school nowadays? And why is he so intent on Matsuri, when it seems like there are Yaka all around?

Characters are cliche, too...
The silent one, the cheerful one, the female friend who cooks and cleans, the loli...

Sat through the series expecting it to turn for the better, based on the reviews given...
Sad to say, I was disappointed...

Try it for yourself, if you want...
It's not totally worthless. At least the sound's not too bad.

I have just finished watching this anime last night, and here is my first review. Actually, I don't really like to watch a romance anime. But the cover of this anime (I mean the girls) has attracted me for watching it. Overall, i did not regret after watching it. It was enjoyable and wasn't boring at all.

A short but sweet anime series that is comparable with the almighty Air, Sola does well to hold its own with an interesting story, great characters and involving interaction and plot.

Sola is comparable with Air is many ways, the main one is the story where the Summer arc in Air is somewhat similar to Sola's story, the main characters had a previous encounter in their previous life. It was a good arc in Air, and Sola really does shine well with the story here.

But Sola is a bit better than Air due to these reasons, first off, the characters, minimalistic, simple and engaging, unlike Air's characters, almost all the characters tend to link themselves to another main character. Also include that the characters are pretty much introduced/seen in the first episodes or so, keeps the pace high and tight. Another is the conclusion, Sola felt more complete than Air, with a conclusion that fits well while Air had a confusing finisher.

While it is wrong to compare this with Air, Sola itself is still a strong anime comparison, character involvement is present with lots of emotional moments here (not as much as Air) and the story is strong, yet it could have been developed more.

If you are looking for a short sweet series about love and fantasy. This is right up your ballpark. Air does a few things better than Sola, while Sola does a few things better.

Overall: 9/10
Grade: A

Sola is a 13 episode drama anime which does not disappoint in any area.

The character designs are very well done, the animation smooth and the scenes detailed. Although it does not contain anything ground breaking, Sola looks very good and accurate, and is an excellent anime to watch.

The soundtrack in Sola is also quite impressive. The theme songs are great to listen to, as is the voice acting. The background music does occasionally seem a bit lacking and repetitive, but it is not very noticeable given the short length of this anime.

The storyline of Sola doesn't suit my taste, but the pace is rapid and the development is entertaining, thanks to its relatively short length. For me, the anime started off barely catching my interest, and ended rather unusually. But, for a person who prefers anime of the more romantic genre, Sola would probably be far more enjoyable.

Character development is one area Sola truly excels at. In just 13 short episodes, the anime develops all of its characters to a highly detailed extent, making the cast very interesting and strongly complementing the storyline. The cast is also quite interesting, containing no evil characters, only misunderstood characters. However, being only 13 episodes short, Sola failed to make me feel attached to the characters, and thereby made the ending seem far less dramatic than it might have been.

Overall, Sola is a highly impressive anime both in terms of presentation and development. It's a shame that I am not a fan of romantic dramas, and therefore probably fail to appreciate this anime to its full extent. Its length might disappoint a few people, but it is definitely an anime to recommend to everyone who enjoys the genre.

This anime blew me away. I had no idea what the story was about going into this anime. The very 1st episode got me hooked and I marathoned the entire anime. A great story that has a little bit of everything, mystery, tension, school life, romance, action, etc.

Overall, Sola is a somewhat unique boy-meets-girl anime with some nice twists thrown in it. For a 13-episode anime, I'd consider it good but I'd be lying if I really said it was the best :P

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Animation - Score of 8
Animation was pretty smooth and solid throughout. It wasn't mindblowing but it certainly wasn't slacking either. Overall, it was pleasing to the eyes.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Sound - Score of 10

I found the sound tracks to be superb throughout the anime. Especially towards the end of the series, during the fight scenes, the music was sublime and conveyed a lot of emotion. This certainly helped raised my opinion of Sola.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Story - Score of 7
Being a 13-episode anime hurts the story. I personally felt the anime started too slow and dived a little too much into the school life of Yorito and his other schoolmates. Time could've been better spent dishing out more on the story (and the mysteries behind it). The ending wasn't great but I personally found it a suitable closing to the series. A happy ending for a few characters (not all though).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Character - Score of 7

As mentioned above, the series being constrained to just 13 episodes was a punishing blow on the overall experience. I personally felt not only did the story suffer but the fleshing out of the main cast of characters. Their personalities felt bland at times and a few of them annoyed me. A shame, really, as this dampened the experience of Sola for me.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Value - Score of 7
I wouldn't say Sola is amazingly rewatchable but it's alright to, once in a while, rewatch the emotional scenes that were thrown in (along with the great music tracks).
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Enjoyment - Score of 8

Overall, Sola was a series which started off strong but slowly waned towards the end (though I loved the fighting scenes towards the end). This is partially due to the fact that it only has 13 episodes and there was probably a rush to end things (once the producers realised they dwelled too much at the start). Still, a sweet story with very interesting twists and a fantastic array of musical tracks would help lighten the experience. Sola should be worthed checking out despite the hiccups along the way.

Much to my disappointment, Sola built itself steadily toward a rather exciting climax, only to finally fall flat on its face. The ending had a number of possible routes to go, but the rules of anime production demand that the worst possible choice be made. Regardless, despite the anticlimactic ending, the majority of Sola is excellent on a number of levels and has a number of high points that tend to overshadow the bad.

The first of these is the animation score. Just from watching the opening video, you'll notice an incredibly fluid and detailed atmosphere that pervades throughout all thirteen episodes with relatively few lapses. Details such as the rotation of the wrist when a character throws an object really stand out. While Aono's character design wasn't too unique, it certainly was passable and fit nicely around the rest of the caste without being awkward. Lots of beautiful scenery to boot, all coming from a somewhat obscure studio that I haven't any experience with before. Definitely keeping my eye on their future works.

While you're at it, toss in a splendid opening and ending theme for good measure. Tack on a beautiful soundtrack and there's not much to complain about here. I found myself hopping back into previous episodes occasionally to listen to some of the insert music, and that's always a good thing -- it reflects on the number of above-average tracks that are scattered throughout the thirteen episodes. I particularly liked Matsuri's Seiyuu as well, as she gave her character a very distinct feel and flavor.

The story takes a number of interesting twists along the way, though I found myself calling BS a few times at a couple of oddball turns of events that seemed a bit too contrived. Overall, however, the story grasps you from start to finish, as it's aptly paced to properly cover thirteen episodes without seeming too short or too long (though I felt they left a number of important things unexplained, with Aono especially.) There's definitely a substantial amount of layering that continually builds up toward the end at a steady pace. All in all, an enticing story that is told well.

Aside from Aono and the waitress girl, I took a liking to all the characters. Matsuri stood out as one the more likable female leads I've run into as of late, and while Yorito was a bit of an airhead I liked him as well. A fairly strong set of lead characters overall, which leads the enjoyability of the story more than anything the story has to offer itself. Both Matsuri and Yorito evolved quite well, and from the beginning you're hooked and baited with the feeling that there's something more to their relationship than meets the eye. They certainly exhibit a satsifying amount of growth.

As a whole, though, Sola moves rather slow. It bears a casual, slice-of-life feel that might bore some viewers. If the first two or three episodes don't catch your interest, the rest probably won't either. If this doesn't bother you, however, then by all means check it out. One of the better series to hit the airwaves this season.

Recommended.

Hm, Sola, what to say about this anime. During the first few episodes I was pretty hooked, the animation was great, the music was great, the story looked promising and there was a little bit of fighting on the side. The ending didn't quite grab me as much as I think it was intended to. There wasn't enough buildup to actually feel much from the climax and the story, while fairly simple, wasn't told as well as it could have been. Some of the things the characters(Aono in particular) did were a little on the hard to believe side, at times it was cliche to the point of irritating.

Still, all in all I'd say I did like the show, a little disappointing because it could have been much better, but still pretty likeable. The music was great all the way through, the animation was gorgeous and some of the characters fairly likeable. Kind of like a video game with great graphics and music but lacking on the gameplay. Anywho, I'd recommend it just to kill some time as it was alright, but it's not really anything to write home about.
