I hear that this has some historical backing as the Skullman is supposedly one of the first anti-heroes in a series. Reboots usually work very well but this particular series did not make a great job out of it.

Let me say that whatever you think skullman is about, you are very wrong. believe me all your preconceived notions about the show should be thrown out of the window. u really have no idea. i recommend that you dont read anything about this anime. you have to see it for yourself. infact i cant even tell you what the show is about without ruining it. if someone asked you to give the plot to memento or usual suspects without giving away the slightest hint of the plot, that would be very difficult. but trust me, give this show a chance.

the animation is a perfect example of almost perfection. each line, each motion gives insight into every emotions the characters are feeling and the actions they plant on implementing. much is said in the way they look at times, the way they move most of the mysteries and emotions are so subtle that you might miss them.

now the story... where do i begin... how do i begin... lets just say that it is about how our sins never really leave us. its about how pain and sorrow can follow us on our backs without us even being consciously aware of them. most importantly, this show is fundamentally a mystery. we learn about the world, the secrets and characters through the eyes of the main characters when they discover secrets themselves. but they also have secrets of their own.

All in all, there really isnt much i can say about the show, but i implore you to just check out the first 3 episodes. if those dont grab you in then it isnt for you. but the show has something for everyone. action, gore, mystery, drama, tragedy, twists. but believe when i say u have no idea what you're getting into. and the ending will shatter you into pieces.

The Skullman really surprised me. It manages to create a really deep, yet simple story in a very classic setting.

The entire style of the Skullman is reflected in the animation. Everything is that of a country in a chaotic post-war stage, topped with a military government and huge corruption. Behind everything, a lot of conspiracies are going on, coninuously creating the story as it unfolds.
The style is complemented with music remniscent of the post WWII era, and its never out of place.

Somewhat out of style, are monsters and cyborgs, which are used for the action part of the anime. Although the designs are somewhat uninspired, they all hint toward a society trying to obtain power, to be better than everyone else. In the aspect of style, The Skullman has not failed at all.

Where it does lack however, is character. While the only problem with the story is the lack of originality, the characters simply fall flat on their faces. None of them have any real background and the need for the female lead and the sidekick characters is just not there; in fact, for a half length anime, they were too many characters taking up too much time. Time that could've been spent on the storytelling, which was sometimes too much in too little time.

Despite the fact that the characters fail to draw you into the story, the overall style of The Skullman makes it more than worthy.

At the end, there is a big hint towards a sequel, but on its own, The Skullman stands for a decent anime if you have some time to spare.
