This is a show FOR fans of the game. Those who played the game (most notably, the Japanese version) will indoubtedly notice a lot of quirks and personality to these characters that others won't. Its quite nostalgic to hear Farah exclaiming her favorite line, "ikeru, ikeru!" or Meredy's "haina!" and "baiba!"

However, seeing as how this show occurs relatively early in the game, it does appear ill-conceived, especially the story, creates some plotholes with the game itself. Also the four signature characters pretty much get very little characterization and development in the show due to the fact that this is, after all, an insignificant sidestory.

As such, this show would be perfect for those who enjoyed the game and would like to see the characters in animated form. For those who have not played the game, stay away, because this show would definitely appear shallow.

After i recently finished ToE on the PSP, i went and checked this anime out.. and what horor show that is!

ToE is a charming game because of its elusive battle system, good characters and simple to understand story, but not much can be said for the anime. This anime is about mid-way through the game and in the end, the anime does nothing to add to the excitement of the game.

Everything here is so tongue in cheek, it felt cheap and cheesy and their little story was diabolical as it was just stupid or pointless. In the end, probably the most redeeming factor about this show was that if you liked ToE then its good to see the party fully animated and moving and doing their thing. Otherwise, i say, avoid this like hte plague, not worth watching.

Overall: 4.5/10
Grade: D

The story is designed to make a viewer want to play the game that inspired it. If my previous statement was true then this show succeeds. The comedic/serious balance in this show was wonderful. Even at the end they sneak in some funny scenes.

I watched the final episode with the fansub commentary and that was a lot better than the real ending.

So yeah, the ending sucks it's to kind but the rest of the story was just as I expected, which does not mean perfect but quite ok.

Fara's battle first episode was one of the best fighting sequences in this anime.

The OP and ED are rather nice.

Other than that, the storyline of the game is much more impressive.

This sidestory seemed to take place in before the party reaches the other side of the world for the first time if it is to be fitted into the storyline of the actual game.

This anime was slightly below mediocre. I know it was based on a game but as I was watching it I felt like I was just watching a game, that is about as much depth or character development this anime has. The action scenes are really boring, the characters are such cardboard cutouts and throughtout the anime I kept thinking, "what is the point of everyone else?" Everyone else seems pretty useless compared to Rid. I don't like anime where the main character so surpasses the people he travels with you're left wondering what is the need for them anyway.
I couldn't really pay attention to this anime because all the character are ripoffs of better animes that did them better.

I have never played the game and seeing this series doesn't make me wish to play it also.

The series itself sounded promising. Lots of action and comedy. Funny situations and hard fought battles. Certain bonding between some characters and some slight sexual content.

Overall, it was interesting. But the major problems of the series are this. You are more curious about secondary characters than the main ones. Also the ending was a great dissapointment. They should have never continued the last episode after the final battle. And without Marone, I wouldn't have kept that attentive on the series itself.

So just to say, it is a good watch, but not a good keep. Still enjoyable.

Its a very good animation, a very good one(huh? Why did I repeat it?). Anyway... The animation is great along with many other characteristics. The plot is kinda good, IF they stick with it...
For example, the main plot of the show is that they are on a journey to some mountain to go to Celestia. But for some strange reason, then ended up in a island of Belcanu for 12/13 of the entire show, then they went to Celestia. The thing is that the plot was never resolved.
Very Inconclusive

The story was really entretaining... however, the ending suck!! it wasn't really an ending... it was more like a long "to be continue" in which you have to make your own ending...

Yeppers, I saw this a couple of years ago...not bad...not good :P Mediocre anime. It would have been better without the ending, whitch sucked badly.

But overall nice & funny anime, i recommend this to almost every comedy / fantasy fans. But don't expect too much.

i feel that this series deserves a higher rating than it has, because if you are not a fan of the GAME then you shouldn't review this, actually you shouldn't have bothered watching it.

i liked the anime a lot, BECAUSE i AM a huge fan of the "tales of" series. tales of eternia is actually tales of destiny 2 in america (namco is stupid).

the game is AWESOME! and the anime was made as a "thank you" for fans of the game. the story is different from the game, but all the characters from the game are in the anime, which made it a special treat for people like myself.

so, you CAN watch this even of you haven't played the game, BUT you will NOT enjoy it as much. overall it's just an average anime.

the animation and music are great. it's one of the better video game turned anime i have watched. the story is nothing new, but that doesn't make it bad.

watch this IF you have played the game. it's a ton of fun.

Based on the Japanese RPG of the same name (Tales of Destiny 2 in the states), Tales of Eternia is one of the better game to anime conversions to date. Unlike most game based anime, ToE doesn't try to retell the story, but simply fits nicely as a sort of filler/side quest to the main story arc from the game. The idea is quiet refreshing, though for those who haven't played the game, can be quiet annoying story wise. Simply put because of it's side quest like nature the main story arc is never realized within the course of the anime series. This aside, Toe is a fun fantasy romp spanning across 13 episodes. Fans of the genre will enjoy this one, as will fans of the game.

It is great when somebody try to make an anime from an game. But almost, if not all, of them could not make a great one. Tales of Eternia is not an exception.

Well, I played the game so let me tell you this. This series, all the events never took place in the game. The only similarity to the game are the four main characters, nothing else. If you are unlike everyone else and can look past the fact that animes don’t have to follow the game and that you’re not watching the game, then you’ll realize that the show is decent. It’s not great, it’s not bad. It’s worth a watch but not keeping, which is better than what some other people say.

I liked this anime more than I thought I would. The colors were very bright and beautiful, and the animation was pretty good. I think a part of my enjoyment was due to the high-quality A-F fansub (I commend them on an excellent sub). I'd say I agree with the guy that says you won't love or hate this anime, but I think you'll be closer to love than hate when you're done. The adaptation from RPG to series was much smoother than most anime adaptations of video games, and this is just overall a very enjoyable series.

A spinoff sorta from the video game. Nothing like the video game, you should play it before watching this. But if your a solid Tales Fan such as myself you'll really enjoy this and watch it anyway. But if you're a normal viewer you might not enjoy this. The animation was awful, it got very sloppy at the end and wasn't really beautiful to begin with. The sound on the other hand is great. If you've played the game you'll love the remix tracks from the game and drool when you hear the battle music. If you haven't played the game you'll be like eh. The story isn't great to anyone who hasn't played the game.

Play the games first. You'll love it more if your a fan of the video games. Do not watch this if you're wondering if you should play the game because its nothing like actually playing it.

For those who like RPG's, or for those who prefer anime in the fantasy genre, this is quite a nice, short series to watch. The series doesn't have the best character development, but it does not hinder it much at all. Animation are ok, not as good as many other series... Enjoyment is where this aniem rally shines, and the Value of it isn't to high. Good for some, but maybe not for others...
