| Okay, now that I have watched the Super Dimensional Calvary of the Southern Cross, that is to say, before Harmony Gold mashed it all into Robotech. I feel it is fitting to write a new review of it.
The voices were perhaps the most annoying thing about the Robotech version of this anime. Luckily, the voices on the original aren't quite as annoying. This made the main character seem less annoying than she did in the Robotech version. It still never ceased to amaze me the lack of discipline that army allowed though. Music wise, I was actually well impressed by it, especially with the catchy OP/ED tracks. Definitely strongest aspect of the anime.
Storywise... my GOD I can't believe how much the original differed from the Robotech version. There were so many bits in the Robotech version that didn't make much sense cos it classed with the first part, the Macross Saga. Well, I found that the original version didn't in any way connect with the Macross Saga. This is definitely a good thing, since the story made more sense, although admittedly I am slightly disappointed that the main character isn't the offspring of Max and Millia, the two genius pilots from Macross.
The Plot does have some merits. It has interesting developments, but suffers from incompleteness and plot holes. For example, it was still not explained properly the relationship between the Zor and the flowers. Nor the reason for them leaving, nor why they didn't just try and take over Gloire in the first place like they did with they other base. They ease with which Squad 15 is able to hold off mass opposition also seems ludicrous. The ending is also very abrupt, and just sort of leaves things hanging. The list of flaws is soooo looong.
Character wise. Not as annoying as Robotech. Some scenes were actually quite funny, like the cinema scene... that was hilarious. But overall... mediocre. The alien-human love thing also seems an idea copied from Macross, as does a lot of other things in this anime. But unlike Macross, this has not stood the test of time nearly as well enough to be called "a classic". Macross was the original. This will always just be a cheap copy cat.
I think shall rate this based on the original, however here I'll also include my review of it as part of robotech:
***
I watched this as part of the robotech saga. I remember it sucked then. But I thought I get it anyways, just for completeness, whilst I was watching the whole robotech thing all over again.
Well, it still suck.
Mediocre story, criminal reuse of ideas from the original macross saga, inconsistency from the robotech masters - every episode they seem to change their mind as to what to do with "these puny humans". This is one crap anime.
The hero girl is one of the most annoying ever, with a voice to match. There is a few decent points in this anime, like the illustration of political in-fighting on earth. The robotech music is still good. But despite these points, this is definitely the weakest link in the 3 robotech anime.
I recommend you do NOT watch it as part of Robotech.

| ---Reviewed as the 2nd part (The Masters Saga) of the Robotech TV Series released by Harmony Gold---
Unfortunately this couldnt repeat the success that was the The Macross Saga. Primarily because it suffers from bad characters especially Dana who comes off as the wierd ditzy girl who is hard to pass up as a leader. Totally unbelievable that she could be the daughter of Max and Miriya from the Macross Saga. The rest of the cast isnt too bad but if the protagonist is annoying it ruins the rest. I think its the fault of the voice actoress playing Dana, she just simply doesnt do a good job. Other than Dana I think the other characters were ok while some did stand as being fairly good. Like Angelo who's the only one that made sense. My other problem was the corn in this show when it came to remarks while battling the Robotech Masters. It came off wierd and unnatural when Dana said it and wasnt the same kind of feeling in the Macross Saga with Rick Hunter and the rest of the previous cast. It honestly came off as lame in many aspects.
Inspite of this I was really impressed by the way this show seamlessly got integrated to the Robotech universe. It was actually made believable that the three mounds were the ruins of the SDF1 2 and 3. At first I had doubts but it becomes a good midpoint between the next Saga and the one before it. Which makes it a worthwhile watch if you want to see the Robotech saga in its complete continuity. The story is the only thing that stands out as its the continuation of an already fantastic story and that was the reason I sat through it. And it was the only thing that made it really enjoyable at times. Though it did have a lot of weaknesses it was still enjoyable especially at the later half of the show when things became much better. It got more actionpacked with mixing some of the elements that made the Macross Saga great.. an alien society getting influenced by Micronian culture.
So in the end this was a fairly enjoyable watch but I would recommend ONLY after watching the Macross Saga. But dont expect it to be as great because the characters are different and there wont be any familiar faces. Still the transition is seamless and well worth it.

| This is a good old anime. It's the continuation of SDF Macross, though the story as it is written here is somewhat wrong. The planet that it is about is Earth. The biggest misfit in the series is Dana, as she is called in Robotech.
The series is worth watching but it is of much less quality than SDF Macross.
