musical and comedy.. very nice.. it really moved my heart.. inspired me more to be a very good musician and a music teacher as well... the love story is so fantastic and romantic, this anime might help teachers to be able to teach classical music and might get students interested to it... the characters are very compatible and they are ones a viewer would be dreaming to be..

Note: This review applies to both Nodame Cantabile and its Paris Chapter. One is based on A-Keep fansubs, while the other is based on BSS group's work. Both possess magnificent quality and professional translation. Recommended.

Quote:
She's really playing according to how she feels. But... It's interesting. Cantabile. She plays as if she were singing.

Originally written as manga by Ninomiya Tomoko (Tensai Family Company) and directed by Kasai Kenichi (Honey & Clover) Nodame Cantabile is an interesting, mildly original show, portraying two polar-opposite musical geniuses - a constructive and hard working conductor Chiaki and a completely random and wacky pianist Nodame. Due to a twist of fate both of them end up walking the same path, together. Various challenges of conducting a flat out worst orchestra ever, or winning piano competitions are what make our characters mature and reach adulthood, all while pursuing their dreams to stand on the top of the music world.

If you are familiar with Kasai Kenichi's other work, Honey & Clover, you will feel right at home in Nodame Cantabile, as his directing abilities are felt very strong in both shows. Though I found Honey & Clover superior, probably because of a stronger original scenario, Nodame Cantabile is also a pretty good anime. It as well, basically, tells a story of university students reaching the pinnacle of their youth. Romantic dreams and cruel reality clashes are delivered by often sarcastic humor, which works real well all the time. Unfortunately having watched Honey & Clover in the past made me all too familiar with the philosophy of Kasai Kenichi, hence I didn't enjoy it as much here, as I did in his prior anime.

Conclusion: Nodame Cantabile is an interesting light hearted show about classical music and coming of age. If you are fond of such stories, have interest in music or just want to relax next to a show which sets all of its values above average - Nodame Cantabile is your choice. You wont find a masterpiece, but you will probably be entertained. It's also, one of the very few shows in anime, which is equally interesting for both women and men. Though ranked for ages 13 and older, I believe Nodame Cantabile is best suited for people in High School or university. Anyway, if you have enjoyed this show - check Honey & Clover, which is quite similar, yet in my opinion, better show than Nodame Cantabile is.

A typical, non-generic series that is worth its salt will struggle for a 1-2% share of the anime ratings in Japan. More generic, long-running/fillerish/merchandise series can reach the magical 5% barrier. Past that, you get the kiddie fodder. So the idea of a solid, ideal-length series to make it into that range is virtually unheard of.

Here is one that has. Miracle? After having watched this in full, I can assure you this is no miracle. Nodame Cantabile has such a rating share and manga sales as credentials because it is a series that delivers from start to finish as well as having a pairing that is one of the finest in anime/manga ever.

Here’s the deal. Chiaki is an exceptional young adult male music student at university level in Japan. Handsome, clean, meticulous, classy – the kind of guy who women gravitate to in droves. (It’s shoujo, what did you expect? :P ) But in his quest to become a conductor in Europe, he has lost something essential – enjoying what he does. Angry at people who don’t fulfil their talent or show no creativity or magic to their playing, Chiaki finds himself ditching his applauded teacher and at the crossroads and loses his vain girlfriend. Ready to give up on his dream. Chiaki comes across Megumi Noda, a female student at the same school. Her bizarre/amusing mannerisms and kid-like nature are enough to drive him insane. If it weren’t for the fact that her unorthodox style of piano playing – perfect Cantabile style – was heaven to his ears. Sometimes. :P Nodame enjoys the piano and what she does, but her problem is a lack of discipline, hygiene and passion. (I wasn’t kidding about the hygiene part either. O_O ) I.e. Where one of them is weak, the other is strong.

What follows is one of the most intriguing, heart-warming, even epic bonds between two people in anime. Chiaki’s inability to lighten up, to communicate with people without being insulting, to control his anger – amusing and quirky moments with Nodame slowly mellow him out. Whereas Chiaki’s ‘tough love’ antics to help out Nodame slowly give her a purpose and something to aim for – as well as falling for Chiaki in a big way. As a result, their musical abilities begin to blossom, which also comes with the harsh fact that they may not be able to stay together – even if their bond is one-sided a lot of the time.

As one would expect from J.C. Staff, the cel animation is crisp and true to the original manga style. You’re not going to find the standard,-mega-shiny big eyes here or the helmet hair. Lighter lines, button eyes and a style that is a bit shoujo but not very – that is what you get in a good way. Scenes involving instrument playing and concerts are done well with the odd CG effect and handling multiple characters with the right amounts of detail and movement, which is a rarity these days. However, the background art is a letdown compared to the high quality set by the character and instrument animation. Buildings are ragged, trees and skies are mere child-like splotches – it’s very basic and a bit disappointing.

Since this is a music series, anything to do with sound is crucial in this series. The opening theme “Allegro Cantabile” is the perfect opening theme. Fast, bouncy, light piano as a prelude to a potent mix of rock and orchestral instruments and some vibrant vocals – it’s invigorating and helps one get into the right mindset very quickly. The first ending theme is fairly J-poppy and too sugary/cheesy – it just doesn’t fit in with the style of vibe of the series. The second ending theme is a marked improvement in terms of sound and lyrics. Classical pieces are given in-depth treatment with Chiaki’s detailed narrative during these pieces. It is also refreshing to hear pieces that aren’t overplayed/stock-standard in modern times. To hear the intense emotion of Rachmaninov, the vivid imagery of Stravinsky or the technical prowess of Chopin is made to be infinitely more special because the intent of the original composer is fleshed out and explained to a detail that is easy to absorb. The subtle differences between a good musician and a great musician are always pointed out. The atmosphere for concertos and music competitions is ideal. It makes one appreciate a great piece of music even more.

Equally as important, the voice acting is of a high quality here. The men actually sound like men, the women actually sound like women, the young adults sound like young adults. (No moe voices…I thought it was no longer possible! What relief!) Chiaki’s voice is given the tonality and subtleties required to show how fine a line there is between the calm Chiaki that people adore and the angry Chiaki people fear. You can feel that deep, brooding beast snarling within Chiaki that he struggles to keep on a leash. Nodame has a warm, affectionate voice combined with zany mannerisms that is overflowing with emotion – the moment her voice hits your ears, there is a relaxing effect that brings a smile to your face. Supporting characters also get good treatment, ones befitting adults. These voices sound like ones you would hear in everyday adult life – with a dash of shoujo stereotypes.

Nodame Cantabile benefits immensely from the depth of its cast. It doesn’t get anywhere near relying on Chiaki and Nodame to carry the show. Throw in Take, a spontaneous yet passionate violinist, along with Masumi, a shoujo-ish timpanist, then Kiyora, a confident and hard-working spunky female concertmaster – you get some hilarious moments and some very earnest moments of friendship and growing as characters. Their ups and downs reflect the cut-throat reality of many talented musicians all competing for rare spots in the business and the double-edged nature of forming friends in a craft where paths may lead to completely different lives. The realism of the story is one of the true strengths of this series. Aside from the odd excessive shoujo-moment, it keeps the balance between amusement and reality very well. It is easy to re-watch this series and doesn’t lose its magic when re-visited.

In a nutshell, Nodame Cantabile is a potent mix of fun, warmth and bitter realities in the rough world of being a classical musician. With exceptional character chemistry, gorgeous music and a gripping story, it has become one of the defining series of this decade – as it deserves to be. It is certainly a series that has the rare quality of being great from start to finish and being a delight to watch every episode. In an industry being riddled with clichés and moe, Nodame Cantabile is the perfect antidote and one of its greatest products.

For me, Nodame Cantabile was a little ironic. I decided to watch it not because it was a shoujo series based on classical music, but because it aired in Japan in the famous Noitamina block. The Noitamina block is a time slot on Fuji TV which usually adapts lesser known manga works. It was initially aimed at older women (josei), but since then its inception, it has adapted works which have earned praise from a universal audience. Anyways, enough about Noitamina and on to Nodame!

I picked up Nodame Cantabile by sheer accident, clicking the wrong download link. I wish all of my mistakes were forgiven this gracefully. What followed was a combination of musical poetry and comedy in one anime. At times I was enchanted by the music, the rest of the time I was pleasantly entertained by the comedy.

The music in Nodame Cantabile is nothing short of stunning. Although all classical/orchestral pieces, the execution is nothing short of breathtaking at times. This is where the anime shines. Music is the main theme of the anime and it's never once forgotten. If you have a decent stereo setup, extra enjoyment is guaranteed. Although I am not at all into classical music, I don't dislike it either and even prefer it to some pop music. At any rate, if you do dislike classical music, you may want to pass up on Nodame. The anime also has quite some comedy going for it, but the music is what it's really all about. Although I'm not able to hear the characters' improvements in their respective fields of music, the chosen pieces were very enjoyable and moreover, perfectly chosen for the moment. Sound direction was at its best.

Which brings me to the hardest part for me to review: The Animation.
Really, I don't have a clue. The basic animation was mostly abysmal for a 2007 anime. Yet I was awestruck by the directing of the anime. It's as if the director purposely chose to put the budget into sound rather than animation, and it worked out. The musical pieces usually contain stills or some half decent CGI. Yet nothing important happens on the screen. Many audiophiles close their eyes when purely listening to music, and the direction of the anime allows this, since you won't miss anything with closed eyes. When the music is played, visuals are simply unneeded, and the director seems to know this. I'd give a 10 for animation, but when the visuals did matter, they just weren't there. What was visual, and in my opinion, much too exaggerated, was the reaction of any audience as soon as a good piece was played. It was animated as if it were the next best thing after sliced bread and beef jerky.

Although I loved the music, the voice acting deserves to be mentioned. The cast for Nodame and Chiaki was nothing short of perfect, although some minor side characters could've been voiced differently and for the female cast (except for Nodame) I hardly heard any difference. Still Chiaki's blunt character and ditto voice immediatly reminded of Full Metal Panic's! Sagara Sousuke. And indeed, it's the same voice actor...Which gave me a hard time to view Chiaki as Chiaki.

The characters themselves are mostly rather one-dimensional. Although they all have some desire to become better musicians (and they apparently do), background or secondary interests/intentions are simply never given. Even Chiaki and Nodame, the main characters, hardly recieve any background. As for relationships, there is hardly any focus on the relationship between Chiaki and Nodame. From the first episode, it starts rather forced. Fortunately, the characters are all very likeable. The solution for Chiaki's aviatophobia is disgustingly laughable (in a really bad way) and Nodame's improvement in playing the piano still seems somewhat strange, even after several motivational injections.

So in regard to the story, there just isn't very much in there. Nodame Cantabile has its focus primarily on letting us hear some great music and to make us laugh. Although the jokes are rather lame, sometimes even repetitive, they are perfectly suited for this anime, and in perticular, one of the main characters: Nodame. The plot just isn't there. It's more like a high school/college anime (Azumanga Daioh), except the college happens to be a conservatory. There are some minor subplots, but a real plot is simply absent.

But nevermind that. Nodame Cantabile just isn't about plot, romance or even characters. It's all about music and a lot of comedy. If you don't have an aversion to classical music, consider Nodame Cantabile a must watch title. You won't be disappointed

When I saw this anime as #1 on anidb I figured I might as well watch it.

Overall I liked it. It was something that a lot of people will find very hard to hate. It is something very simple that a lot of people can just sit down and enjoy it for what it simply is. A girl love struck over a boy with dreams of something else. If you like romantic comedies you like this one.

Much like the feeling left at the end of a symphony performance, Nodame Cantabile left me with the feeling of the characters and their musical performances rather than a complex, dramatic, or engaging plot/story. Inherently, this is neither good or bad, but it also makes it difficult to truly remember the anime. After only a few days of watching it, I have almost forgotten all the little things that made Nodame enjoyable.

While the quirky characters brought a few chuckles and the orchestral performances allowed me to relax a bit, Nodame Cantabile did not really 'do' much for me. I did not enjoy Nodame Cantabile too much due because I was never fully captured or convinced by the mood. The romance seemed thrown in and was never really taken seriously with musical performance riding the front seat. Even the musical performances were not too convincing.

Nodame Cantabile can be summarized as such: Two characters with great talent for music. Chiaki wants to be a conductor and is very disciplined and comes from a strong musical background. He is very popular with girls, but shows little interest in return. Nodame plays piano for fun but really wants to be an elementary school teacher. She is talented but lacks discipline. She has a quirky personality and is openly in love with Chiaki. Nodame basically carries the weight of this anime. Her carefree nature brings energy to the scene. If she is down, then the viewer feels down. If Nodame is happy and energetic, the viewer becomes more spirited, etc. If you dislike her character, then there is nothing else here to redeem this anime.

A lot of Nodame Cantabile consists of computer animated music performances. While I admire how the animation synchronizes with the music, I also found it slightly unnecessary. Often, I would find myself staring at the screen clueless as to what to focus on. Should I be listening to the music? No... according to Chiaki (main male character), there isn't enough 'so and so' expression. Should I focus on the accurate bow movements and horn playing? No... because it gets really boring and similar after awhile. Then what? Anyway, I did like the character designs and the colors, so I rate animation an 8.

Being a piano player myself, I enjoy classical music a lot. As a result, I was quite critical on the music aspect. My biggest qualm is with musical expression. I respect how they decided to put a lot of classical music into this anime, but they failed to musically portray the 'problems' with some people's performances. For example, Nodame's style of piano performance is supposed to be very 'free' and unbridled. Nevertheless, the music that comes from the anime just feels like a professional recording of some sort. It doesn't have much individual character that reflects upon the expression and personality of that character.

Conclusion: Nodame Cantabile is good for anyone who enjoys classical music. If you don't, stay away because there is a LOT of terms, talk about composers, and musical performances. The character interactions were mildly humorous, but nothing substantial or dramatic. Storyline is weak, but manages to act as a decent framework for the musical performances and occasional humor moments. I did feel like I got to know the characters quite well, so I liked the ending, but it definitely is not a tear jerker. Watch Nodame Cantabile for its classical music and the interesting characters.

Nodame Cantabile,a love story which revolves around Noda Megumi and Shinichi Chiaki. Although it just got released a few months ago and it may not be popular right now, but still if your a person who is into classical music you should watch this one. Not only that but it is so funny that it is one of my favorite comedy animes. It's just that Noda Megumi and Shinichi Chiaki makes it want you to watch the whole season in no time. Maybe it's because of Nodame's way of talking, those "FYUGYA" and "BYUGYA" whenever she makes a mistake or gets embarassed by Chiaki. Well not only the first and middle part of the anime is good, even the ending is. Which is hard to find these days in anime. So if you want to laugh all day, try this one and it will change your life.

This anime is a lot like honey and clover in a lot of ways. In honey & clover, it was an art student, in this its all about the music. And you get a lot of classical music in this anime. Its quite a good anime, its even better if you had a great speakers, the sound will be good. It also has a love story, though this anime is clearly to bring orchestra to an anime audience.

Very solid if not spectacular. This anime is one of those mature comedies in that is doesn't over indulge in ridiculous actions and still maintains a humor all its own. Animation is good, and really good during the recital scenes. Perfect mix of comedy and story to keep the viewer amused. A truly great feel good and funny anime that will keep you amused every episode. One of the few animes with a great ending.

This anime was simply brilliant. The ending leaves you with a fulfilled feeling of possibility and resolution at the same time. There isn't a single moment of rest or boredom in Nodame, especially if you are a fan of classical music.

What amazed me the most was that again, like other well known anime to hit this season, the creators were able to take a not-so-good-guy main lead and make him seem very real. The female lead, although sometimes obnoxious, displayed her true depth at all the right moments.

The sound was fantastic, and the animation took on a Haruhi-esque detail. The OP song was amazing. I was skeptical about the piano part in the OP, but the artist is actually quite gifted at playing the piano. During scenes in which the piano was played by a character, when they showed the characters playing the piano <they were hitting all the right notes!>. This in itself is pretty amazing.

All in all, Nodame is a story about growing, overcoming hardship, and what really matters to you as a person in the person that you truly love.

I highly recommend this anime to anyone who wants to feel in the end a general sense of fulfillment.

Great characters. Great music. Great fun. What more can you ask for? Nodame Cantabile chronicles the college life of Chiaki Shinichi and Noda Megumi, two talented music students who are seemingly polar opposites. One is a serious studious scholar who wants to take his music further but can’t, and the other is a carefree slob who could take her music further but won’t. When these two come together a whole new world of opportunities opens before them. Watch as they grow musically, professionally, romantically. Watch as they grow as people.

Nodame Cantabile turns out to be one of the anime that surprises me this year. With a simplistic yet well written story, an unusual premise, and interesting characters, makes this series into a winning combination.

The animation has a really good quality, with the transitions between 2D and 3D done quite smoothly. But perhaps the sounds is the best part of this series. With orchestra music in every episode, and Seki Tomokazu and Kawasumi Ayako taking the lead roles perfectly, it is as much a joy to listen to the anime than to actually watch the anime.

The story is not hard to understand at all. Basically about the hero struggle to realize his own success, with each episode teaching him/her a new lesson in life. A well writtened story, with no pretense and lots of comedic bits at the right time. The story does have quite a few touching moments as it winds down into the last episode.

The lead characters lead this anime beautifully, and the supporting cast did a decent job supporting the main story. The only downside is that the early somewhat important characters like Stresemann and Saiko just kinda fades into oblivion in the second half of the story. It would be interesting for them to have developed more, espeically in the case for Saiko.

All in all, this is one of the better anime for this year. Even if you do not enjoy orchestra type of music, the straight-forward story of Nodame would definitely draw you in.

There comes a time in everyone's lives when they meet the most important person to them in the world... the "one" that will turn their lives around completely for better or for worse... we just don't know when it'll happen, or who that person actually is. You might think that if it has already happened, it must be the celebrity you met at that outing quite a few years ago - it can't possibly be anyone else!

To prove that wrong, Chiaki Shinichi, an infamous piano student and apprentice to a famous Vienna conductor, has met quite a few supposedly famous people during his days at the music academy: acclaimed German conductor Franz von Strezemann, celebrated Japanese violinist Miki Kiyora, etc etc.. However, even with the eclipse of Sebastiano Viera on his record, none of his life-long dreams could have been fulfilled if it weren't for that one fatal meeting, by chance, at his apartment. Not only is she not famous, but she is one of the most disgraceful human beings on the planet - the exact opposite of what one would typically think of.

Nodame Cantabile follows the chronicles of this fated couple and their ups and downs through the world of classical music. A romantic comedy saturated with obscure gags and spontaneous reactions followed by a plethora of Chiaki fanboys/girls, this manga-turned-live-action-adaption-then-into-an-anime will sure have you choking on laughter while filling your ears with beautiful classical music.

The most awesome aspect of this story is most probably the star couple: Chiaki and Nodame. While Chiaki is a walking female magnet with great talents to show for it, Nodame is most contrastingly a walking garbage truck. The chemistry between them spontaneously went through the first moments they appear together, and the reaction proceeds to further development throughout the course of the show. Both prodigies undergo intense changes through both their emotions and their already high-class talents. Even through the most absurd gags from them, it can't be denied that they make a great couple together without all the drama.

However brilliant the main couple is, they cannot progress their relationship without a good story! Though nothing short of unique, their first rendez-vous sets up the stage for their opportunities and achievements to come. Characters come in and out of people's lives, and they realistically make their way into Chiaki's life through silly means and spot-on appearances. Both the love portion and the growth of their careers are simultaneously told at a great pace thanks to a bold and impressive director and the manga creator. The story ends on a good note, with hopes of a second season!

This anime cannot be complete without the main theme that it is based around on: classical music. Ear-warming pieces are played in many episodes (especially towards the latter half of the series). To the untrained ears, everything sounds good, but to the trained ears, some might find that the placement of both bad and good playing to be just perfect. This anime also serves as a gateway into the classical world, if some want to get into the world of the time before mainstream pop trash, rock and roll, or the blues of the 20's. The animation only complements the songs slightly, as all it mostly is is CG of hands and fingers, "painted" scenes, and sometimes a splash of artistic colour (as they say, music can remind people of a certain colour!).

With a popular live-action drama based on the manga having been successful before the run of the anime, Nodame Cantabile should surely not be missed!

Ok so this anime was around for a while and seeing the name just turned me off so I didn't bother with it for quite some time. Biggest mistake ever. This anime chewed up my expectations and spit them out in neatly wrapped silver boxes. I don't even know where to start, the whole thing was just awesome, every single episode was just great to watch, I can honestly say I was not bored for even a single second and that's what has me so ecstatic about this anime.

Let's see, the animation, for the first few seconds I wasn't sure if I would like it but that passed quickly, while it wasn't the best animation I've ever seen I'd say it suited this anime perfectly, except maybe a few of the 3D scenes.

The sound was beautiful, I loved the opening and ending songs and every piece of music played throughout the series. Being a show largely about music, no surprise there.

Story, highly original and a pleasure to watch the whole way through, very funny at times without being the least bit cheesy(a mistake a lot of animes seem to be making these days).

Characters were also great, distinct yet very funny personalities in nearly every character. I loved the development in Nodame herself, all the way until the very end.

Value, hm, I'm not the type of person to watch an anime twice but I haven't been able to get this series out of my head for quite some time after seeing the final episode.

Annnnnd finally enjoyment...uh, DUH! :)

Strict prodigy guy with high ambitions and bad attitude meets goofy weird girl prodigy at piano who's the complete opposite to guy - what do you have??? Wonderful entertainment filled to the brim with laughs!!!

When I first laid eyes on the title I didn't expect much. The animation seemed poor and the story revolved around classical music (-yuck!) but quickly found myself addicted to the show. The characters made up for all the -now- seemingly few flaws it had.

Please watch it!

Nodame Cantabile is an incredible anime.

I'll easily chalk this up as one of my top 10 anime. It's not just the incredibly good use of incredibly good music throughout, it's the well thought-out characters, involving storyline, and excellent script that sets this one towards the top of my list.

Highly, highly recommended.

Nodame Cantabile took me by storm. I picked the title up after casually looking around for some more light-hearted shows and bumped into Nodame.

The show turned out to be far beyond my expectations and I kept constantly getting the legendary "One more episode"-moments with this show.

The best part about the show is the mood in general, things seem enjoyable and fun with the show and things are often not what they seem like.

There are few titles which bring this much content so smoothly. Art is very unique but it clings to your eyes after a few minutes. The music pieces were for the most part very beautiful, and althought at times should have readjusted the narration interrupting the pieces, the overall direction of this series is impeccable.

Richie Blackmore playing Beethoven's 5th with a full beer bottle across his Strat, is as classical as I'll ever get. Me watching a series that's all about classical music is not happening. But with everybody getting all excited over this new series, I decided to watch one single episode with my itching finger close to the delete key. Turns out I don't have to like old, crappy music to enjoy this anime. Like I enjoyed Hikaru no Go without ever giving a rat's ass about Go. The study of classical music is just the vehicle used for an easygoing, amusing and engaging tale about inner growth and overcoming obstacles. Animation is nothing to write home about. But I don't need reflecting surfaces and computerized action graphics in a series in which the highpoint of excitement is the school orchestra playing Mahler. Sound, as is to be expected, is very good. Main Characters are interesting and have substance. All in all a very fine piece of work, even for boorish oafs like myself, who refuse to listen to anything pre-electric.
