5 Centimeters Per Second contains most of Shinkai's usual elements: lots of narration, awesome graphics and beautiful portrayal of emotion. This one doesn't have any Sci-fi in it, which makes the story feel more original than The Place Promised in Our Early Days, but fails in the fact it relies too much on narration. I can't think of many ways it can be fixed, and in many ways it added to the atmosphere and emotion. It is representative of the characters state of mind- the fact no matter what they do, that person is on their mind- their loneliness brings them inwards to observe, but I still think it's a little flawed with film. If it was a piece of literature alone, they'd be nothing wrong with it. However, it's not.

Stunning in animation and story, the movie really strikes an emotional chord like few other movies, anime or conventional. Every image has been lovingly rendered to tell a love story that everyone can relate to. If not for a third act that fails to follow up on the excellence of the prior two, this would have been ranked among my favorite films.

Simply beautiful visually, and thankfully, some substance to back it up. Action packed this is not, but if you are alone on a rainy winter's afternoon, I cannot think of anything better for the occasion.

This anime had me thinking a little bit... I was thinking something along the lines of, "This anime is not for everyone."

I was originally planning to say things more along the lines of 'goodness gracious, this blend of beautiful animation, touching music, and a heartfelt storyline are enough to make you feel unspeakable emotions'....however, with some consideration, I decided to stick with the former statements, and I will describe why.

First off, let's discuss the objective portions. This anime has such amazing/stunning visuals that if you disagree then something is funny in the head. I have never seen such beautiful animation. This facet alone gives this anime a gold-sticker of quality.

The music is just as amazing to match, as expected from Tenmon. The instrumentals are breathtaking and heartfelt. There is, however, a big 'no-no' in the subjective feel category. At a certain point in the story, there is a montage that used a song that I found a little 'unmatching' of the moment. It is unfortunate because this was not Tenmon's fault; unfortunately that one song-choice for the montage degrades the overall quality of the sound, especially since the anime is so short and has little room for error.

But enough berating, this anime deserves much less of that. The characters/story are just as amazing to match the animation/sound, and the reason ties into the little blurb I wrote at the beginning of my review. This anime is definitely NOT for everyone, and I say that with a hint of scathing sarcasm. With regards to virtually every 'slow-style' anime, there are groups of people who DETEST them. And I think I finally understand why:

Byosoku 5 centimeter is like a beautiful piece of art to me. The dialogue is VERY unique, in that it never falters, but never gets 'involved'. The story is split into three segments, and I really enjoyed the way in which they used this to develop the characters' personalities, making you feel like 13 episodes had passed, even though it had only been one hour.

Segment 1 introduces the characters as children; segment 2 describes the sentiment of the main character Tohno, and segment 3 re-emphasizes the relationship between Tohno and his childhood friend [from part 1] Akari.

The whole anime has a special brand of feel to it; a unique coalition resulting from the colorful animation-sound-story. The anime is bursting with 100% 'authenticity', and if you've read my other reviews, you will hear countless berating of 'fake moments' or 'cheap nude ecchi shots' or 'annoying backup characters'. Aside from my little montage horror-moment, this anime lacked ALL of that. Of course, it's a little 'cheap' to say, because you could argue this anime only had to hold its ground for one hour. But simply stating that is unfair. This anime performs a rather difficult feat of producing the 'feel' that I had been yearning for, and have finally found a piece of.

All of the characters are thoroughly developed in such a short time, and the story flows beautifully as it synchronizes with the flawless animation. All this said, however, this anime does have its problems. Besides the horror-montage, it also had me twitching with the red marker of 'melodrama ahoy'. However, this is quickly countered with the anime's 'special style' and extremely convincing pace/story-decisions. To put it concisely, there is little to bicker about.

I will finish with my defense and attack of what I meant by 'this anime is not for everyone':

This anime's full colors can only be perceived by those who have matured enough (or have been unlucky/lucky [depending on your philosophical views] enough to feel) the very-real pains of 'distance'. I have my own personal interpretations of the 'true meaning' of this anime. Many may remark that I am making something out of nothing, but I fervently disagree. I may even go far enough to argue that the main character's romantic relationship was 'not real'. In the sense 'not real', I mean not necessarily material. It represents something much-much more. In those majestic moments where the characters stand still, full of awe unable to speak while staring at a revelation that is slowly unfolding before their very eyes, 1,000,000 words are being spoken simultaneously through the use of expressions and pictures. And it is in this VERY MOMENT, that half of the viewing-population realizes that this anime is more than just authentic. It means something, and its telling the viewer a message that it cares about.

This message is the bitter/sweet feel of life, and how some of the things we value more than our very lives are separated with this feel of 'distance'. The main character's feelings are analogous to our own, when we want something so bad, but it seems 'larger than life'. I'm sure many of us can relate tremendously to Tohno's 'unsent messages'. This isn't just about cheap relationships and sex and unconvincing meetings full of deus-ex machine and 'a walk to remember' complex. In fact, this anime took the realism-hammer and threw it slab-dab right in my face! [let's just say for those skeptics out there, that cell-phones and email were historically uncommon during the first segment]. This is convincing, heartfelt, artistic, more than words, larger than life, and something that can only be felt.

At the same moment this very message is being told, the other half of the population scoffs at how 'boring and unmoving' this anime is. They will praise anime like KGNE which follow the 'sob-story' formula, and criticize this one for being uneventful and a waste of time.

Perhaps these views are a bit unorthodox, but they are my honest and supported opinions. I have made my case, but now all that is left is for you to watch and see if you agree. There are so many hidden motifs and 'feelings' in this piece, and only those who 'look between the lines' can perceive them. These people have to know how painful it is to love something larger than life, but for some reason are forbidden by life's rules to obtain it. Sometimes you will walk by the train station and catch a glimpse of this 'euphoric-ideal', only to notice that it disappeared before your very eyes. And that's because, perhaps, it never truly existed. It was idealized, crystallized in the most pure-innocent form it could possibly exist as: a childhood relationship. And while this may result in a heavy/painful heartache, some would argue that this may be for the best. Because perhaps, this is the most ideal form a real-world 'romance' could ever be, well isolated and protected from the cruel clutches of reality and the cold world.

~edit (after rewatching the anime for the second time and reading the entry on wikipedia):

I usually do not recommend this, but for those who did not get all the motifs in the story, wikipedia actually does a great job of outlining all the nuances that the writers were trying to convey. In addition, I am further convinced that this work is truly amazing, even more so than I had originally anticipated. This anime has risen to an epic-tier in my own mind, and the score has been raised accordingly.

Hands down, one of the best anime I've ever personally connected with

I came into this movie with great expectations. However, aside from the 1080p resolution, this movie really doesn't boast anything too revolutionary. Execution-wise, the story-telling method was flawless (the way they manage to cram two people's lives into just one hour movie). However, it is just a shame that the story and character elements are neither original nor interesting.

The story revolves around the theme of long distance relationships and growing up and apart from your childhood (friends/lovers). It is a story about maturing and growing up, and about a boy who does not ever let the past go. He keeps correspondence with this girl who moved away, and goes to her see her for one magical night. Later, he moves away, and they lose connection. Byosoku 5cm is basically about the life of this boy while he is apart.

Emotionally, I wanted to say I felt sad - but any tangible feelings that this movie evoked disappeared as quickly as it came. With hardly enough time to properly develop the characters, this story purely focuses on the 'distance' part and not enough on the people involved. There's nothing original about any of the characters, nothing that stands out about them in anyway. Unless the viewer has experienced the same pains, I don't think it'll be easy to associate with the characters. The most unconvincing part is their love: I don't feel it, I don't see it, it is only stated. Sakura trees and beautiful scenery aside, there's nothing to be seen here.

Animation-wise, it is crisp, sharp and clear. Style is beautiful, but also very realistic. I believe that they probably used some sort of print-over of real scenes in order to create this (Not sure). However, it is also not too fluid. There isn't much fluid motion. It only goes to the extent of the grass swaying in the wind. It would be nice to have some animation more engaging. Otherwise, the animation here is basically still-art.

Overall, I was not impressed at all by this 3-episode series/movie. The ending song came really abruptly, and the only memorable part was the ending. However, this feeling soon died down as well. Animation is beautiful, but not fluid. Music is nice, but does not stand out either. I watched this together with someone else, and usually that heightens the enjoyment factor of an anime for me, but for Byosoku 5cm, it did nothing. Only watch this to show off your nice TV or monitor, otherwise pass.

Shinkai Makoto's most recent work "5 centimeters per second" treads on the similar ground with everything else that he did so far such as "Voices of a Distant Star," "Places Promised in Our Early Days," and "She and Her Cat." By that I mean this feature length animation film also boasts dreamy animation, and his favorite loneliness and isolation theme.

May be the whole post modern anxiety is getting to him a bit too much these days. While his Voices and Place Promised left my mouth ajar in admiration, this work lacks the freshness of the earlier two works. Repetitiveness of theme has something to do with that of course, but mainly the fault lies in not creating an environment that is new to the viewers. The whole space text messaging was new. Whole multi-dimensional universe also increased the intrigue. This time Mr. Makoto settles for more realistic situations to illustrate the childhood love lost. Although one may say that this film is more genuine and down to earth, for me, this movie didn't make me feel enough.

The movie is divided into 3 sections. 1/3 of the story portrays the childhood, and the next two sections portray teenage years, and adulthood. Characters are the same, but the time frame jumps form one stage to another.

This kind of style could possibly work, but it is difficult to achieve success. This movie manages to do a moderate job of making this whole structure work, but we also do not see how characters develop. The main male character Tono Takaki stays pretty much the same throughout the whole movie. Shinohara Akari really is just an extra, and does not play any important role in moving the story forward.

On top of that the song at the very end just take screen time and does not do anything to the story. It seemed to me Mr. Makoto did not really know how to end it or just wanted to fill up the screen time. The song also is not pleasant to the ears. The singer, I thought, really should retire.

Overall, It still worth one watch, but it is not Shinkai Makoto's best. It lacks the original premise and the emotional drive required to keep the audience interest level high. Story feels obviously too choppy, which hurts the character development and the most interesting character in the film is not even the two leads, its the surfer girl in the 2nd episode. However, animation is still amazing, and the heartfelt sentiment is still there. If you really dig the whole loneliness thing this movie still have some worth.

The very first thing anyone would notice with this movie, is its breathtaking graphics and animation. 5 Centimeters Per Second is not a fully computer generated movie such as Karas, but it has the realistic reflections, lighting, and shading, that rivals even the best computer generated anime.
The astounding level of detail and realism continues from start to finish throughout the movie, making 5 Centimeters Per Second arguably the best looking anime to date. The gorgeous graphics also greatly contributes to many other aspects of the movie.

One of the aspects greatly enhanced by the graphics and animation, is the soundtrack. Every track in the anime sounds perfect with its accompanying scene. To me, even the credits sounded excellent. The single theme song which is played at the very end of the movie sums up the emotions of the characters with precision, although I am rather doubtful about the choice of the artist performing the song. Nevertheless, 5 Centimeters Per Second sounds very good.

5 Centimeters Per Second features an emotion stirring storyline. As it provides a real world perspective of its cast's romantic emotional struggles, the pace of the storyline is slow, the focus and development is more on the characters rather than the story, and there is not much in terms of plot. However, all that will not matter to the viewer, as the storyline of 5 Centimeters Per Second is told in a way that will make the viewer genuinely feel attached to its characters, and character development is one area this movie also excels at.

The most important factor for a movie describing the feelings of its cast would be character development, and 5 Centimeters Per Second is a huge success in this respect. The few actual characters introduced in the movie might appear to be very average and uninteresting, but their development is excellent. This adds another degree of realism to the movie, along with the animation and storyline.

5 Centimeters Per Second, although relatively short for a movie, is of the highest quality. It has won numerous awards, and quite rightly so. I am confident to say that anyone who appreciates a good storyline, cast, or animation, will enjoy this movie. For me personally, who rarely watches anime of the pure romantic genre, the amazing animation in 5 Centimeters Per Second alone was sufficient to make me thoroughly enjoy this anime. Along with the engaging soundtrack; touching storyline; and captivating characters, there never was a single dull moment.

In Director Makoto Shinkai's 3rd full length film, a story of a young man's heart unfolds from the perspective of himself and those around him. Shinkai's masterful animation does not disappoint nor does Tenmon's accompanying soundtrack. The story revolves around a young Tono Takaki and begins with his first love in grade school. From there, the anime follows Takaki, but this time from the perspective of another. This story of how a young man clings to his feelings of love and the impact it has on his life is by far one of the best anime movies out there.

Ok ok.. overall, this is a really beautiful and sad anime as expected of the studio that created it(Voices of the distant star). However, it took on a different approach this time, it focus on relationship problems that modern people faces nowadays rather than fighting aliens and stuffs.

First is the animation, which is very unique, very different from other animes. It could be the next generation of anime.

The sound was great, never heard that kind of quality in other anime before, very realistic and gives us a better feel of the anime, good work.

The story was revolutionary, showing a real, sad, but beautiful ending instead of the usual happy ending/ unhappy ending. However, is episode 2 of the anime really necessary ?

The characters are well characterized to suit the plot. Bring out the sadness and beauty of the story completely. I had never seem so much effort being put on characters.

And finally it is the part where i think should hold more scores, the vaule part. What is better than an edifying anime ? Byosuku offers a caveat to all modern people about the relationship problems and how people can drift apart, no matters how close u were. Now i will never let my future gf travel too far away =D

Enjoyment ! i am, totally enraptured by this anime, even it is 2am in the morning. However, i was expecting a happy ending, or more likely, i wan one. So the sad ending doesn't really appeal to me to the fullest, but still deserves a good score.

This was one of the best hours I have ever spent in my life.
The 3 series anime is about the romance between a boy and girl that fades in time due to their long distance.
The story was well written, if simple, but I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and their genuineness.
It was an emotional ride as I listened to their thoughts and experienced their feelings, sometimes reflecting on my own past loves.
A bonus for me were the places mentioned in the anime - Kagoshima, Shinjuku, Tokyo, Kumamoto, even the JR lines. I had a chance to visit all of them this past summer, so the extra element of nostalgia enhanced the show.
I recently saw an anime, Toki o Kakeru Shojo aka The Girl Who Leapt Through Time, that had the same feel and flow to it as this one, although with a different story.
If you liked this anime, you may want to check that out too.

Bottom line is, do yourself a favor and watch this anime. It's only an hour long. I gotta warn you though - there's a good chance you'll like this so much, you'll re-watch it again (and again...).

Enjoy =)

Honestly, I was very disappointed. I knew the most attracting point of his movie was the computer graphics and I didn’t expect the story very much. However, the story was stale. They were very realistic and so common. I dare say there was no climax in them.

At first, I was also disappointed at the computer graphics of the first episode. It was not as good as his former works. The characteristic of his graphics is vivid coloring using high contrast of light and shade, blue and orange. However, the drawing of the first episode was vague, and it looked as if they were drawn manually. But, it might be his intention. He might have intended to draw pictures so that they became more vivid as the story was approaching from the past to the present. The drawing of the second episode became so beautiful. The sceneries of the dusk and starry night were breathtaking, and those of the third episode became more vivid.

Although the story was not interesting, the music clip of the third episode was well made. It looked as if the whole stories were made for this a few minutes music clip.

Conclusion: Do not expect this anime too much. Yes, the computer graphics is beautiful, but this doesn’t mean it is worth while paying money to go to the movie.

So this is Shinkai's latest?
I can honestly say that this is one of the absolute best animes/movies I've ever experienced. (And I've been around for some time).

Playd out in the early 90's- It's a story 'bout 2 children who found their kindred spirits in each other. The first episode of the 3part movie explains the dilemma between the two- Went to same school as children, seperates due to school-transfers, remain contact through letters and train rides... One day, the obstacles between them becomes greater.

There isn't much to be said 'bout the characters in the first episode, they don't potrait anything new on the anime-scene. Shy, distant and on a mission. But I do feel for them, the story build-up helps alot- the emotions arn't very subtle, as they seldom are in animes- but therein lays the charm of it. It TRIES however to be subtle, and you will appreciate the effort.

The animation and sound are outstanding! Every single frame is well thought of. The backgrounds are jaw-droppin' amazing. The music is very pleasurable and well conducted. The voices work very well.

--------to conclude.

The first episode of the 3-part movie is a must see. You are not allowed to give a anime a perfect ten until you have actually seen this piece of work.

Having just finished watching the first part subbed, I am speechless with wonder and awe. This simple vignette-styled story of innocence and childhood bonds growing and blossoming can move even the most jaded and cynical of men. Of all the anime featuring loud, energetic music and crazy tales of love and loss, this puts shame to them by its simplicity and purity. When it comes out on DVD in the States, I will most definitely fork over the cash with a smile.

EDIT
I have just found and watched the subbed second and third parts. Dear lord, it has been a long, long time since I was so moved by anything, much less a piece of anime! I *highly* recommend this for anyone and everyone who still has a flicker of childhood dreams and hopes and wonder still about them. It has a bittersweet ending, but is done so superbly subtly that it only adds to its burgeoning overwhelming magnificence.

If you couldn't tell, I *highly* recommend this anime.
