The Shakugan no Shana movie retracks through the opening six or seven episodes of the SNS first season. High aesthetic quality masks a minimum of added substance.

It's more Shana. This time she's in a movie that is basically an alternate way of telling the first few episodes of the first season. What's different about this than the beginning of the first season? Well, the beginning is basically the same, some of the same scenes are repeated, but with higher animation quality. The story is told differently in the second half causing it to be more rushed than the series, but still good in it's own way.

The animations are up for sure. They took the regular Shana and upgraded her and they took all her fight scenes and made them seem more polished then before. Animations rival Shakugan no Shana II, because apparently due to the popularity of the first season they made a second season which has a much higher budget than the first season. So put that money into good use and you get flashy pretty scenes. YAY for flashy pretty scenes.

Instead of reusing the old soundtrack from the original series, they decide to go with an all new soundtrack featuring two really good songs sung by the singers in the first series. The fact that they did this meant that they wanted to make this movie a success and not just a ploy to make more money, because we know that happens a lot to popular shows now a days.

The characters are just as you knew them in the first season, so nothing big in the character change from the first season to the movie. The story for the first half of the movie is the same, but then they take an alternate method of beating the baddy in the movie. Add in a higher budget with flashier animations and the fight scenes are just wonderful in the second half.

Shakugan no Shana fans need to see the movie. Think of it as another way to watch the beginning of the series again. Just with better animations, a new soundtrack, a different story in the second half, and an all new experience all together.

I saw this awhile back, but didn't know it had an entry here until I saw someone else mention it.

The Shakugan no Shana movie follows the first arc from the TV series, from when Shana comes into Yuji's life to Friagne's defeat. Although a different take on this arc, Shana fans should find this worthwhile as the story is told much better and faster, and even though the movie is more faithful to the book, the premature introduction of Margery Daw does no harm on the story.

For a movie released two years after the first TV series, the animation quality improved substantially. Great fight scenes, colourful dancing flames, and whatever else J.C. STAFF can integrate into the world of Flame Hazes and Tomagura's. The action scenes rival SnSII's quality, and the choreography was breathtaking.

This movie also caused me to go find the SnS soundtrack. I like all the French names they give to all the songs.

The story is much better handled in the movie than what I can remember from the TV version. The movie SEEMS like it is reusing cells from the first few episodes (due to the need to introduce everything again, of course), but by half way 90% is original animation. It's the same-old defeat the main villain story, and they still didn't expand on Hikari's fade out, but it was still entertaining.

Shana fans may find this worth watching. New fans may find this better than the first 7 episodes or so of the TV series, and they can go on from there. I highly enjoyed this, and I can't wait for a second Shana movie.
