Let me first explain why I started to watch Yoake mae. About six months ago I was browsing one online shop with anime merchandise. I stumbled one very nice looking figure. It didn't have information were it was from and I left it unknown. A few months in to the future and what I see: the same beautiful princess was clearly among the new series. Yup, it was Feena and Yoake mae yori ruriiro na Crescent Love.

So all had for this series was one cute princess. I didn't expect much from anime and it didn't deliver anything more. This show is so basic harem that you can't get anymore basic. The setting: Princess of Moon, Feena, and regular Earth boy, Tatsuya, meet when their children after both have lost one of their parents. They console each other and the princess goes back to Moon. Some ten years later Feena comes back to Earth to learn about the culture and ease the tension between Moon and Earth. Surprisingly she stays at the same house as Tatsuya. They just don't recognize each other. Romance ensues.

Doesn't sound too original and it isn't. Feena and Tatsuya go through every possible cliché romantic shounen anime has. First they start to fall for each other, then others say their love is impossible, they hesitate, then they find their true feelings and decide to do whatever it needs to have each other. Add childhood friends, little sisters, maids, arranged marriage and a whole lot of talk about understanding each other through knowing each other and you got the whole series. There was absolutely nothing that happened that I couldn't already tell miles away.

So the story is already lost, only interesting characters can save it. Unfortunately while Feena certainly is cute, there's nothing interesting about her or Tatsuya. No depth, no real development other than what the story dictated, just 'I love you, you love me' stuff. Chemistry between them is about zero. All the other characters are pretty useless too and serve as source gags and nothing else. Feena's promised husband Jurgen is such an empty enemy character that he made me laugh. First he does everything in his power to make the viewer hate him and then he just stands there smirking as he puts his devilish plan in motion and Feena's father, the king, just does whatever he suggest. How can such a weak person stay on the throne anyway? There are some people whose function was a complete mystery like little Wreath-chan. She just goes around looking like a menace, then suddenly unleashed her powers and then doesn't do anything for the rest of the series.

The humor works for about two episodes and then the jokes become repetetive and quickly boring. They use a lot of chibi effects at the beginning and they don't really fit seamlessly into the show. Some of the jokes are completely uncomprehesible like the way the son of owner of the restaurant Tatsuya works at gets everything deducted from his pay. Or how Tatsuya has the habit of grabbing people's noses. They don't even explain where the silly behaviour comes. Blah.

To add to the boring catastrophy series its animation is poor. The first episode looks ok but then it's downhill and fast. Lack of details, changing character designs, jerky motion, every animation sin is there. Sound department doesn't shine either. Both the opening and ending are overly sentimental pieces that made me yawn.

Sorry if this review seems messed up. I wrote this quite quickly because Yoake mae was so boring I don't want the use much time for this. I got no emotions from this romance. It isn't that bad as such. It has cute girls, a lot of cute romance and some fun comedy in the first episodes but the uninspired way it's made makes the whole show seem stupid. But then again if this was my first harem series, I might have enjoyed Feena's and Tatsuya's big romance. After seeing a plethora of similar shows, Yoake mae simply has no taste.

After watching all 12 episodes, this was one of the most enjoyable romance animes I've seen for this year. Although some episodes were cheesy, this show still showcased a mix of comic relief and seriousness which is great. One episode even made me cry for a moment and really feel for the characters. (not something I did for Kimi ga nozomu eien) This anime sports a fulfilling ending and always keeps the viewer at a optimistic mood.

*After watching ep 7*

Well this is a series I wouldn't recommend to everyone as its pretty much a love story between two people, and usually with a happy ending.

Now I could go on and on about the series coz its like watching other drama series based on games and they all tend to have the same cliche storyline, boy meets girl, boy and girl falls in love, good and/or bad things happen when they fall in love, be together forever, THE END!

but the main point here is the animation, which I highly expect from most anime of this caliber. Im gonna be honest about this coz noone else is going to point it out, but figuring those who have watched this anime would already known the obvious crappy presentation of characters in this anime alone, let alone of such effects like the fiery background in the episode where Feena and Natsuki have their cooking battle, ala Iron Chef Style. If they have worked on the animation, then I would probably mark this up higher, but unfortunately it doesn't deserv

Story was just cliche. It cant get any simpler then that im afraid.

Sound was pretty much the same, nothing to be expected from it, considering its a love series.

Characters would be another strong point, and my favorite point, coz I love character development. Not pointing out the relationship between Tatsu and Feena, I enjoy their development and the story pretty much reflects their lives and the people around them. Theres some political ussies in this but your not watching this series just for that. Theres not much i can point out at the moment

Unless your a drama fanatic (which Im not, but i enjoy watching such genders, Im more of an action mecha fan) dont watch this coz you will be put off with the animation, poot and i mean real poor comparing to the likes of Naruto ( I remember this series used to have good animation, then when it came to fillers, it just went to nothing but crap, hopefully they fix this up), Speed Grapher ( I like the story, but i noticed really crappy animation, but the character development and story saved it somehow, well for me anyway) and Witchblade ( Guys love such things, my included, but the animation here puts me right off hence my sudden stop in watching it)

Peace Out
