| Yonna in the Solitary Fortress is no more than a story intended for young children at best. If you're expecting something groundbreaking or even remotely in-depth, you're both in the wrong audience and watching the wrong movie. To compare it to FF: Advent Children is placing it in the wrong spectrum, because the target audiences for both films are completely different.
This animated film is about a young enchantress (Yonna) living in seclusion in a large fortress with her brother Stan. A young boy, who works as a government agent, comes to retrieve her while claiming an order to take her by force, yet he finds that Stan and Yonna are no mere individuals to make his mission easy.
In fact, the majority of the movie is dedicated to the thrill of the chase-Stan on the heels of the agent and blasting the intruder with bursts of magic, refusing to give his sister up to the government for the manipulation of her power. As well, Yonna conjures up an impressive display of her powers-from creating rather off-the-wall looking creatures to rather elaborate ways to save her skin, caught in the midst of the chase.
I disagree with some of the previous reviews-quite on many points in fact-this movie has a story of merit, yet nothing that's remotely unpredictable or complex, but rather simple and to the point. I also didn't find it boring or duly paced-it works for a simple slice of life/fantasy/coming of age movie- the latter in terms of the young enchantress coming to realize her feelings about her "captivity".
"Yonna in the Solitary Fortress" is well animated, using CG graphic design, but I did take off a full point because the special effects seem a bit awkward in points, but it's nothing too deterring. The music is quite nice, from the rather "Final Fantasy"-esque chase theme in the sequences where the agent's chased by Stan, to the placid settings where Yonna's left within her thoughts, or conversing peacefully with the agent who claims to "take her away" from her confines.
Story and characters are simple and not intended to be terribly complex-having said that, for its intended scope, it works well. Granted, there are simple plot holes and things that one needs to assume in the aftermath, so I can't give it full credit for being conclusive. Yonna's shown in scopes the reason why she came to be in the fortress, and her confliction in the decision to stay or leave is shown essentially through dialogue and her facial expressions. As well, one might say the affections each of the characters feel is underdeveloped, but as mentioned, this film really isn't "intended" to be terribly deep-just show a simple story within it's overall framework.
I did enjoy "Yonna in the Solitary Fortress" for what it was worth, but I'll wholeheartedly admit it wasn't a movie that appealed to my specific tastes in terms of complexity and ingenuity. Still, even if didn't appeal to me in that mode, it would be wrong to say that this movie didn't have it's merits, as it's a rather cute movie.
Recommended more for younger audiences, though I think those who aren't looking for anything with over-expectations wouldn't enjoy.

| This computer animation style kind of reminds me of Shrek... wthout the cartoony nature of the characters that would forgive the characters from looking so ugly, design wise. Basically the only thing that really stands out are the really beautifully rendered computer designed backgrounds and buildings. With its beautiful scenery, this is really a good visual eye candy to take in. The character movements themselves aren't TOO bad, but it just feels kind of unnatural and unfluid. I guess this is due to the lack of enough 'joints' moving at the same time. Eh to summarize the animation style, it feels like a video game FMV with a bad connection between voice and mouth movements.
The story is a complete and utter disaster... not enough substantial events happen and it just consists of this ...boy... running around the castle trying to meet this... girl. A lot of meaningless character interactions and dialogue. Maybe they should have more interesting action scenes because the only strong point in this is its animation. The original idea itself (some obsessive brother wants to protect his sister and prevents anyone from getting close to her by closing themselves up in a castle) is pretty ridiculous and as a result everything else stemming from it bores me. Really has no re-watch value and the animation itself is not really worth it to go out of your way to watch this.

| Hanare Toride no Yonna was a visual feast but otherwise it’s not worthwhile watching. There was very little substance to the story, the characters aren’t very personable and overall, it just wasn’t all that enjoyable.

| This 30 min movie is just a showcase of 3D cg. And there are lots of it in this anime. When you compare this to FF7AC, this is slightly short.
Animation is good, you get good 3D CG scenes. This anime is made of it. Apart from that everything else is mediocre.
Sound is ok, not the very best BGM I have heard. In fact the BGM is like some low quality RPG. Some of the sound scenes do not match the scene at all, and not only that the sound is too simplistic, and clearly repetitions of the same thing. Seiyuu is ok.
Story is too short, does make sense, but does not give justice to the good graphics. Aside from that, the story is so boring that you would be wondering wether to keep it or not, and thats exactly what you would be asking at the end of the anime. Its not really bad, but then its not worth the keep also.
Character design is quite hopeless. its 3D, but then looks like everyone has the same face. Only difference in the facial hair. One thing about 3D CG is that in ff7AC the hair moves around naturally, in this the hair is static, its like the characers are wearing some sort of helmet.
Ok to see it once, but then there is really no value in this anime
