| Many anime series have attempted to address the unfortunate circumstances that befall a female lead surrounded in a well-to-do school environment and surrounded by adversity at the potential factor of being incorporated into or regarded by the highest of the elite. Hana Yori Dango addressed the issues of Makino Tsukushi as a poor student subject to the antics of F4, the most popular boys of the school she attended. In Brother Dear Brother, Misono Nanako faced the ire of the school after being incorporated into the school sorority as a new student.
Yuzuru Hagino is one protagonist that faces a similar predicament, subjectively seduced by Renge Kai into becoming a "Honey", a position where an underclass female serves her "Master", an upperclass male whom she cares for until he graduates. Renge Kai is the "Master" subject to Yuzuru's awkward affections, coming across as cold, brash, and sexually advancing. Yuzuru feels trapped considering she cannot quit her position as a "Honey", since her tuition is paid to attend the school, and she risks expulsion. Yet, she feels torn between several other "Masters" who draw straws upon her affections, promising to treat her better than the seemingly abusive Kai.
As a female, I was quite insulted by the travesty that was Mitsu Mitsu Drops. Not only are the characters incredibly flat, some of the come across as either overtly crude and possessive or so weak-willed and submissive that it was hard to get to know them, let alone like them. Watching this series was like uncovering the layers of a wedding cake, the outside is beautifully constructed, but the frosting only masks the dull tastes that underlie. Beautiful/handsome characters or no, it's no excuse for a haphazard story and poorly developed characters, horribly one-dimensional ones and brute ones at that.
It's unfortunate to comment accordingly, but I understand why production was halted on an OVA of this standing. Apart from having beautiful animation and character design, this series was just mediocre on almost every front: in characterization, plot sequencing, and overall quality.
