I've loved this series since I first set eyes on the fansubbed anime back a few months ago. If you can suspend all your regular systems of belief that Peacemaker and Rurouni Kenshin might have taught you about the Edo period, you will undoubtedly have fun with this. The Gintama-fied version of the once fearsome Shinsengumi had me in stitches: Okita is no longer sweet, childish and playful-he's now a crazy person carrying around a rocket launcher trying to off his boss at any oppurtune moment. Kondo is now a complete buffoon (and crazy person) trying to stalk Shinpachi's sister...and failing miserably. And the long suffering Hijikata is now-you guessed it! a crazy person-desperately holding on to what remains of his sanity while keeping his subordinates under control, and kicking the stuffing out of them in the process. Oh yes; and the famous rebel bomber Katsura now has a giant pet duck named 'Elizabeth' who might just be an hairy old man in disuise. Its stupid, its crude, and its crazy, but good grief its funny.
Special mention must also go to our protagonist Gintoki, whose hilariously cynical and philosophical approach to life, even in the most off-the-wall situation, is a breath of fresh air into a genre where most of the heroes are cardboard cut-out sterotypes that spout 'I want to become stronger!' over and over again.
Gintama truly wins the gold (or silver!!) award for the best series to grace Shonen Jump since Naruto. Lets 'pray' for english release of the anime soon! (puns intended)
A rare 10/10 enjoyment ^___^

based on 16 episodes...will be rewritten when finished

has anybody ever heard a better op or ed. i have listened to many good ones but not in the same anime. really catchy opener and i also listen the ed until the end every time.
anyway an good op and ed does not make a great show. gintamas structure is to make jokes of other series what is called parody i think. sometimes they succeed in doing so but it rarely gets hilarious. so why do i give 10 points in categpry of enjoyment. because the time goes by very fast and i have an easy time. the scenery is likeable, the characters are funny with a great voice acting, the animation is kenshin tv series quality ( probably a bit better), the sound is perfect and i just never get bored of seeing them doing nonsense. i know that many people will come up to rate it very bad because there is no real story or the character design is not very well drawn but i simply love this anime. it gives me a good feeling and i can recommend this to anyone who has a big knowledge containing anime. there are many allusions to other anime like eyeshield 21 and so on. overall gintama leaves not much to be desired except a decent storyline that can not be expected by an anime of this genre.

This is one weird yet very funny series filled with randomness and parodies to a certain extent.

Basically this is about 3 people in a world from the era of the samurais which ceased to almost completely exist after aliens took over earth. Now both humans and aliens "coexists" and the few remaining samurais have to adapt to this change, one of them being the main character.

Animation has a poor design or style, though the coloring is decent. Sound, as in character voice and music, is really good. I love the characters' voices and the OP/ED songs are unusual but very very catchy which really surprised me. I usually dont even care about anime's OP/ED songs, but I rate these almost as good as those from Stellvia. The characters are very likeable though one-dimensional. Their interactions with each other is hilarious though which makes it worth watching. Now... lets go to the story... well the setting is as I described previously, but the story development and plot are rather shallow, mainly because of the nature of this anime (ie- was probably intended as such).

I recommend this series if you like light-hearted comedy and hilarity and get some laughs.

This is a gag comedy anime about samurai and aliens in a jacked up historical setting with aliens (Amanto) taking over Japan during the likely Edo era. This anime is funny and light hearted. The 3 main characters and their interactions make the show better than most anime. The anime also makes fun of itself in many episodes (seen 25 episodes). For example in the latest episode the show begins with only dialogue with the three main characters stating how the show barely made the cut to continue. I am unsure how well the show translates to english or subtitles. I am guessing the show would lose a lot of its punch because much of the humour is related to how things are stated. All in all, I think this anime is worth while. Don't let the weirdness of the show discourage you.
