This series of gag anime shorts basically consists of a variety of random - what first pops to mind - type of humor. Each episode has some sort of certain theme (monk travelings, fairy world + magic girl, death, end of the world tv shows) and they have crazy characters act in ways that people don't normally do in reality. I actually found this to be really enjoyable, especially because each one is short and sweet. If I did not like a particular gag, it was no big deal because it was so short. However, there would be an occasional great gag that made me laugh endlessly leading to greater benefits (entertainment) over costs (wasted time).

Each episode basically proceeds in a similar fashion - we have a few characters portrayed as living some sort of normal life in a normal setting, then some supernatural weird things happen or people start acting completely out of character (probably due to the weird supernatural factor put in), we have build up of this scenario and BAM some sort of punchline leading to the end. Very fun.

That said, Episode 4 is one of my favorites, but there were a series of other gags that made me chuckle quite a bit due to the sheer randomness. I would definitely recommend this for people who love gag animes, very well done and for its craziness, it is one of my favorite Japanese anime humor series

What?! Nobody has reviewed this rare gem!

Okay, so that was a joke. Sue me. Gyaku Manga Biyori isn't a gem but it's quite a silly show that would appeal to people with strange sense of humor. There is no plot to this series: each episode except for two are independent collection of odd jokes. The themes range from historic politics to animal detective stories. Usually they feature a couple of characters of which one does stupid things and the other go OMGWTF about them. It wouldn't be much of fun unless the stories would be so twistedly strange. Like the animal detective stories: this rabbit girl is supposedly a great detective. Some crimes happen and she comes to the scene. The narrator, a bear friend of hers, goes on telling how great she is and how the crime is terrible and reveals himself to be culprit. So much for the great detective work. They repeat that a few times and that's the episode. Yes, the episodes are only 5 minutes long. Thank god, because while the humor works at low dosage much more would fry the viewer's brain. The humor is accentuated with crappy animation. Honestly, the series looks more hideous than any anime I've seen before but it still works like a dream with its humor. The voice acting is delightfully insane and the wacky opening and ending songs fit the series well.

So, I have nothing more to say. It's a simple show with no story or character development. It's also very short and its nature is revealed after 10 seconds of the first episode, so it's definitely worth the try. If you have liked shows like Sexy Commando or Cromartie High, Gyaku Manga Biyori is not likely to let you down.
