First off id like to say that this is my personal opinion so dont get upset by reading my review if. I only got through three episodes before growing bord. I did not like this show because from what I could tell it followed the badguy/plot of the day which isnt entirely bad, but the show didnt bring enough to the table in other aspects so i quicly became bored.

ANIMATION: nothing wrong here... nothing brilliant either.. the one thing i did like that I saw in the three episodes i watched was the transformation sequence which was short and sweet unlike some other transformation sequences ive seen coughsailormoonanddigemoncough cough.. ahem

SOUND: Not a lot brought to the table here. I didnt mind it but im sure as hell not about to go find the ost's and burn them to a cd.

STORY: people have "dreams" (more like selfish desires that they dont tell other people about, not sleep dreams like i was expecting) and then when their dreams arent fulfilled it turns into a "nightmare" (or more like a monster comes out and the main characters have to fight it in something like a random encounter from a videogame) the good guys beat it and go home... it could have been done sooooo much better, really,, i think it was a great concept poorly executed.

CHARACTER: not a whole lot of character developement in 3 episodes so to be fair I didnt grade the character developement.

VALUE: I most likely wont be watching this ever again but i might for noveltys sake. dont waste money or harddrive space on this one people v_v

ENJOYMENT: I loved this anime soooo much that im going to get a tattoo of the cast on my back... just kidding i really didnt enjoy it that much

"Yume Tsukai" is one of the most surprisingly interesting series I've seen in ages. The story concept and structure are disarmingly simple, even clichéd: two sisters (aided by their aunt and, occassionally, other "Yume Tsukai") banish bad dreams ("yume") that have appeared in reality back to the subconscious whence they came. All the staples of a "monster-of-the-week" show are in place: the heroes transform before doing battle with the dreams; they use toys as weapons in various original ways; there is a fantastical "dream cyclone" that never fails to annihilate whatever they are fighting. The characters all seem to be standard stereotypes as well: the carefree sleepyhead, the precocious and vaguely annoying elementary school student, the big-breasted older woman, the secretly kind lolicon, the innocent and naïve newcomer. For the majority of the show, each week some combination of these characters encounters a yume, "solves" it by figuring out what suppressed desire is causing it, has the dreamer blow on a paper image to free themselves, and then "plays," using various absurd techniques to destroy the malevolent teddy bear, or flower, or whatever. Nothing very special, right?

Was this all there was to the show I might have produced a review like the one below. But in fact, "Yume Tsukai" is not truly about any of the things I have just outlined. Beneath all of the absurd yelling and the "let's have fun" façade, Yume Tsukai is a show deeply interested in the mechanics of denied desire and in the manner in which that desire can destroy people's lives. More profoundly, it is an exploration of the morality of our very instincts: some things are, by the very social rules of human nature, simply not allowed (incest, suicide, the wish for a family member to die)--considered "evil." But is there an ethical distinction between the desire and the product of that desire? That is to say, is "evil" something internal, that is expressed every time we think of something "wrong" (meaning that the yume themselves are inherently undesirable and should be totally destroyed), or is it something relational, expressed only when these "wrong" desires are acted upon (meaning that the yume should not be destroyed but simply resubsumed)?

The series' exploration of these questions appears to come to a pretty definite conclusion; but at the same time the show brilliantly deconstructs itself towards the end, revealing the extreme complexity of what the opening song refers to as "enigmatic, wavering, glittering dreams." The mildly humorous exploits and brash confrontations of the extreme Freudian wish-fulfillment of the show's set-up (don't like your desires? Just call in the Yume Tsukai to personify and cheerfully defeat them!) are undermined by the nature of the series' final confrontation, and by the end of the show it becomes apparent that all of this flashy glitz is no more than a paper-thin scab over the Yume Tsukai's true powerlessness.

If dreams cannot be changed without the decision of the dreamer, and if the dreamer is unable to will his or her own dreams to change, than what hope is there for a quiet sleep?

Give this series a try. Look past the surface. You won't be disappointed.

This review goes up to episode 6. At the moment, its nothing special, quite average and may even seem lacking any many departments such as sound and visual effects...especially for a 2006 anime. Similar to a "Power ranger format", problem > solution > use combined powers of the heroes.
