| (Ayu fansubs. Good translation overall and they translated the end-credits song as well.)
While this movie did well in Japan it is extremely underrated among anime fans. Had this the Studio Ghibili brand it would certainly be more popular.
Personally I liked it a little more than Howl's Moving Castle and found the animation very innovative. If G.Suji is involved expect something unique in animation after all.
This is an animated film targeted at kids, though I'm sure that the novel the film is based on is much better (like it occured with the movie "Watership Down"). But I doubt either film or novels will become licensed by foreign distributors.
I found the film slow-paced and too simplistic, if not didactic, in its messages to younger viewers.
I was hardly moved by the friendship between the goat and the wolf probably because unfortunately I've become too grown up for fairy tales (again I'm sure the novel is much better). But when I compare it with the more mediocre works of Studio Ghibili or some CGI animated films that aim for the box-office, "On a Stormy Night" isnt such a bad film after all and it will certainly be remembered by children that watched it on the big screen.
Such fairy-tale kind of films made me like cartoons and animation in general after all.
Recommended viewing if you like simple and touching films. For a 2005 movie they made a nice effort to bring back nice memories to the older viewers and new memories to the younger ones.

| Have you ever heard of a wolf and a goat become friends? No, neither have I. Half of the time I was watching this movie, I was trying to overcome my disbelief that this could actually happen. I mean, a wolf HAS to eat goats to survive. They don't have much other food sources where they live. The fact that the wolf would sacrifice his very own livelihood for a goat friend (who in return doesn't offer much to the wolf) made me scratch my head for a long time. When I was finally convinced of their friendship, a series of turn of events happen and we get this ridiculous result where the wolf loses his memory and wants to eat the goat again. Of course other things happen after that, but I mean, really, this story really sucks.
One of the reasons why I had a hard time beliving the goat+wolf friendship was that the goat is really stupid. The wolf is a really nice guy, because he does all this stuff for his friends. But the goat... he does nothing. I just wanted the goat to be eaten, and then the wolf wouldn't have to go through all these hardships. Again, I thought the story idea was ridiculous. If you want to have friends between rivals, why not a mouse and a cat? A bear and a dog? Who cares? But a goat and a wolf... you might as well pair up a shark and nice yummy fish. Actually, that's been done before huh? (Well that movie sucked, too - and Will Smith as a fish sucks)
Anyway, the good part of this movie is that it has some nice animation. Very clean, crisp and smooth. Actually, I was kind of thrown off course by the beginning scene. I was kind of hoping this movie would be darker. While it does get to be pretty grim, it never really gets to be heavy and strongly emotional. There are some touching parts, but any traces of that feeling are soon flushed down the toilet as the stupid goat acts in such a ridiculous, unnatural manner.
Stormy Night is a story about a friendship between a goat and a wolf and all the hardships they encounter. The moral of the story is that friendships can overcome... anything? I'd believe this story more if only they convinced me a little bit better. A weak relationship between the two characters makes this movie hard to swallow.

| This anime looks more Disney like than nippon like. The story of a goat and a wolf becoming friends and the troubles that come with it. Its quite nice, but not great.
