| Note: This review applies to the first three seasons of Zero no Tsukaima. It is based on SS-AYU and SS-Eclipse fansubs, both of which offer great quality and good translation.
Quote:
But, I am an aristocrat. It is an honor to die for one's people. You make fun of it... but is it really that insignificant to die for others?
Originally written as light novel series by Yamaguchi Noboru and directed by Iwasaki Yoshiaki (Love Hina, Hayate no Gotoku!!) and Kou Yuu (Chrono Crusade) Zero no Tsukaima is a romantic tsundere comedy with fantasy elements. It's plot is relatively basic, if shallow - Louise a student of magic academy fizzles a spell and summons a young japanese male, Hiraga Saito, for a familiar due to mistake. The guy is pretty much lost in the new land, so he has no choice but to stick with Louise and her horrible treatment. The light hearted story goes to touch stuff like sacrifices for ideals, war politics, unequal social standing issues and more, but never really delves too deep into anything and tries its best to tell a light, romantic and ecchi story about the growing attachment between Louise and Saito, which, in this case, is surprisingly not a bad thing.
Out of the many anime I have watched, this series are one of the easiest to recommend. It builds all of its substance on tsundere and nothing else: it throws away drama potential to offer tsundere jokes, it throws away political warfare potential for tsundere charm and it exchanges character depth for recurring tsundere violence. So, yeah, the likability of this show completely depends on to what extent do you like tsunderes. Simply, if you are not turned on by the archetype - go away from this show, run as far as you can, you will most likely hate it. On the other hand, if you are the one who finds tsunderes close to your heart - don't miss your chance to watch this show, you will most likely love it, as Zero no Tsukaima is one of the few romantic tsundere shows which actually manage to go past the kisses and offer more.. errr, erotic romance. Since I personally fall into the latter category I have enjoyed this show pretty much, much more than I would dare to give it credit for.
Conclusion: Watchable by anyone who is of 13 years old or older Zero no Tsukaima is one of the best tsundere comedies in the market. However, it weighs on its tsundere appeal so much that it forgets to nurture its other ones. In other words, watch this show then and only then if you are indeed a fan of tsundere archetype. If you don't find tsundere moe - don't watch this show, or you will most definitely be disappointed. Other shows with attractive tsundere romance I found entertaining are - Hanbun no Tsuki ga Noboru Sora, Shakugan no Shana and the best one Toradora!. Finally, not strictly a tsundere and not even a comedy, but the best romance show in anime form, an ancestor of tsundere anime is the remarkable Seikai no Monshou.

| Zero no Tsukaima... Season one was a very surprising animation in the time it aired. Basically the story was funny, with lots of 'fresh air' in it, and a bunch of nice ideas.
The plot starts when Louise preforms a summoning of a familiar. She is a very NOT promising student of a magical academy, because of her lack of talent and average grade of 0. She is called by her student colleges as "Zero no Louise". To prove that she is a magician she takes the exam for the summoning and of course - when every one summons unusual creatures - she summons Hiraga Saito, an typical Japanese boy. That's the start of a very complicated relationship.
The studios that animated this series are J.C.STAFF. They have some nice titles in their history, such as: Ai Yori Aoshi, Ai Yori Aoshi ~Enishi~, Alien Nine, Azumanga Daioh, Karin, LOVELESS (shonen-ai, but still :)) Shakugan no Shana, Shakugan no Shana II, and more.
Considering this history of their projects, "Zero no Tsukaina" is a nicely done animation. The lines are good, well drawn for year 2006, plus the movement of the characters as well as the light and shadow effects are done perfectly. The main thing I count as a minus is the background. While in the interiors there is a lot of space, outside there is even more of it. Makes the heroes sometimes look very lonely.
In the matter of sound it is done good, but unfortunately nothing big comes out of it. The songs are average, as well as the music in time of action scenes. The voice acting is done well, and I have no compiments in this matter. Main heroes (Louise and Saito) are 'using' voices of Kugimiya Rie ("Shakugan no Shana" - Shana Voice, "Toradora!" - Aisaka Taiga Voice, and also "Fullmetal Alchemist" voice of Al Elric) witch makes me wonder if She is always doing brestless, little, arrogant and energetic girls? and Hino Satoshi (Sakai Yuji in "Shakugan no Shana", and witch was a supreme for me Sai in "Naruto S"). Talent well used.
The main issue is the story. It has nothing to do in the main stream with the heroes. At the beginning we are shown characters in everyday live and in very comic situation. Creating a nice comedy. But as time goes the war starts, out of nowhere, to complicate matters everything is pumped with social regulations and the main romantic encounters. BUT the war that is the center still has nothing to do with Louise and Saito.
And the ending seems like a total scraping of the show. Well nothing is resolved, there is no overcome, an normal point of end.
The thing that rescues the anime are the characters. Their construction end evolution makes real seance.
Louise for start, she is a very energetic and emotional girl, not tall and not very liked by others because of her lack of talent. On the other hand the way she is lost in the new situations as well as the facts that always or almost always she is overpowered by circumstances, makes you like her screaming and shouting. Even if you will not like her at the beginning you will at the end.
Hiraga Saito is a boy any one is easily able to understand. Finding himself in a very unnatural situation, chained with a girl that treats him like a dog, but is fascinating him on the other side. His personality makes him a common hero, but a hero that makes you like him. He evolves and grows to an adult from a boy.
The main thing that makes you like this pair is that every time Saito finds himself in a very typical situation - with, or on, or under another girl - you know that it will be Louise that will find him.
The main thing is that the evolution of characters stops with no particular reason. Not only in the first season, but in the second two as well. That is, it will not affect my grades for the first one.
I value this animation quite well, it is not a must see show or a thing that will affect your live, but a nice short series good for a day or week. The problem is that to understand more you must see the rest, continuations, that are lousing point with the season numbers.

| Overall, this was a thoroughly enjoyable anime if you're looking for a fun, funny lighthearted series. I laughed my head off throughout, though the series is not without its serious moments. The romance is enough to satisfy without smothering the rest of the storyline, with plenty of fun magical action and amusing characters.

| It's a very cute anime. Think of Lord of the Rings and Harry Poeter put together and you have Zero no Tsukaima.
The animation was ok. I like most of the scenes. The only thing I didn't like much was the way they made the eyes. I didn't have any problem with anything else. Also they could have given a better map of this new world. All you see is one huge continent in the middle and the kingdom they're staying in the right side of it. Not a very big world. I like the double moon. That was a very nice touch.
The sound was ok. I like the OP, but I didn't like the ED. The music thru the story was ok always. The sound for the magic spells were kinda cheezy, but some of them sound pretty good. Their voices were nicely match.
The story was interresting. I love any story that deal with magic. Add a human into the mix with some kind of weird power and you have myself hooked on the anime. This anime is based on Louise a mage who isn't very bright when it comes to spells and Saito a Japanese boy who was summoned by Louise to be her servant. Saito gets this ruins mark on his left hand if I'm not mistaken which gives him the power to contol any Weapon. From there on the story goes into different little stories, but the main one is the war between Aristocats from the two kindgom.
Characters were fun. Although some were annoying. You have a little red head who loves to seek attentions to guys. The book smart one that speacks only once in a full moon if hardly at all. Then you got Saito and Louise. Louise tends to get annoying and I'm surprised that Saito actually putted up with it. The anime has its humors, but the love-romance department is very weak. At some point of this anime you can actually consider this a harem in my opinion.
I enjoyed the first season very much, but it leaves me with a lot of questions. The second season doesn't really answer my questions either and I think there's going to be a third season, but it's not certain yet. Overall it's a pretty decent anime for only 13 episodes.

| This is indeed a very special anime, the animation was ok so it deserve a 7, and the sound was good (explosion etc) so an 8. The story was great and always excites me, it combines magical world with our own world in a very hilarious way. About the characters, they are funny and each has their own err.. unique-ness, their background is also quite detailed.
About the value... not much is learn... so a 5 ba.
However, i really enjoyed this anime and i enjoyed its second season even more.

| A charming romance between a noble and a... civilian from another dimension, who could care less about nobility, honor, etc. There are battles, wars, etc. but they mostly exist to flesh out the world around them, (which is, btw. incredibly well made. If the author wanted I'm sure he could make 20 other stories set in the same world. Also, I like worlds created by historian-authors.) The main story line is between Saito and Louise as they overcome their cultural biases and outside temptations, in the name of love.

| Harry Potter? What the hell...
Damn it, you can't call this 'Harry Potter' just because it is set in a magic school. Going by that principle, you could call any Gundam Wing anime 'Transformers' just because there are huge, fighting robots.

| When a series draws comparison from the first episode itself it just spells trouble. Zero no Tsukaima is just that. Half of the reviews I've read of this either pass it off as a Harry Potter with a female lead. The remaining half say that this is an ecchi version of Shakugan no Shana. Thankfully I saw the series before I read these reviews so I was safe from all this pre-judgment. While the series does invite all this blame on itself - it still manages to remains tons of fun with plenty of moments that had me bursting out with laughter and at the same time making me enjoy the average plot which was at times trite, at times cute and at time surprisingly good.

| This anime is not really good. If you have watched Shakugan no shana, then is not on par with that one. Its really no match inferior with every way. Its ike they are trying to emulate shana or make a fan service out of it which is this one.

| the anime was quite nice, it had a bit of comedy, romance (in a way), action, and adventure. most of the episodes were fun though there were a few small boring parts and the last episode seemed like it was rushed, it's a great thing that there's a high chance of a second season. the relationship between the main characters is also interesting.

| This anime is really lighthearted. The animation is nice and suits the style of the series. The story sets a really good premise, but the anime never really gets serious. The characters are likeable. The main male character comes with backbone and integrity which is especially welcome. I recommend it for the watch.
I want to add that this anime is based off a series of light novels. Compared to the novel, the anime doesn't do it any justice. The novel is soo much better in story and character department. It is a novel and it comes with few illustrations. I recommend watching the anime and than checking out the content of the novel. This way, you can form better pictures in your imagination as you read it.

| Zero no Tsukaima is a fun anime that doesn't require lots of thinking. It's just fun after fun after fun. It's a simple anime, but somehow it draws you in. Like the characters are somehow annoying, but you like them anyway. The anime is pretty average, nothing new, but it's pretty memorable.
Bright colors make the anime more appealing and a whole bunch of sparkles in this anime makes it more magical. (I guess) The basic background is used many times over and over again, but it doesn't get too boring after some times.
The voice actors are the same from Shakugan no Shana. (I loved Shakugan no Shana) The OP is very catchy and can draw you in from first glance. The sound effects are usually a wand waving or some glitter being pulled across the screen to make it change scenes. Overall the music and the voice acting isn't so bad.
A mediocre love-romance anime, a mediocre action anime, and a mediocre harem. Zero no Tsukaima tries to do a lot of things. It doesn't do well at any of them, but it's not terrible either. Basically there's a girl named Louise (Sounds like a guy's name) and she summons a familiar, but the familiar is a commoner named Saito. Then a love-romance/action/harem/comedy anime begins. Saito is surrounded by four girls. Very typical for a harem anime. A quiet girl, a nice girl, a bratty girl, and a girl who uses her looks to attract men. Then there's the action part where the girls and Saito fight magical monsters like dragons and golems. It's a pretty funny anime and can make you laugh a lot. But the comedy is the only part that this anime really does well.
The ending felt a little rushed, but I heard there's going to be a second season to this. So I'm not going to count the ending in my score.
The characters are all funny and hilarious at some times. It's always entertaining seeing Saito and Louise battling it out. The other character's all have different personalities which I just explained in the story section. Nice, quiet, etc etc etc. The character's barely change in this anime and if they do they turn back to their normal self at the end of the anime. The characters look nice and they all have different hair colors which makes it easy to tell them apart.
This anime has some good laughs, but it felt too rushed at the end. And had a bumpy start from the opening. If you enjoy comedies then you should give this anime a try. If not then ignore this anime and watch something else.

| Magic? Sticks? Magic-school?
Is this Harry Potter?
That is the first thing to come in mind, you see this school, which outfits resembling Harry Potter. Yet the answer is no, this is not Harry Potter. In fact, it doesn't even resemblance Harry Potter.
How many times didn't you think about Magic, a Magic school and sticks, before Harry Potter. I can guess it's Many times.
So what makes this Anime so different from others?
I think it's it build up. The story at first may be funny, especially when this Japanese guy suddenly comes into a magic place, his reaction is great. Then there's the thing he can't understand her Language, which the creators fixed in no time. I think this Anime deserves a applause, because it has a simple story, with simple build up, yet this Anime is refreshing and fun.
For 13 episodes long, Zero no Tsukaima has entertained me. Everything came in it's right moments, maybe it was my mood, but mostly it was Zero no Tsukaima. I'm sure that the comedy inside this simplistic story is entertaining to all. It's comedy contains ecchi, it contains pervy jokes. But this Anime knows how to deal with that, since they all don't cross the line, they just make you laugh. Unlike some other pervy Anime(s).
Besides that it's only 13 episodes long, and the characters are simple but likeable, this Anime also has a great ending. Maybe it's logic is far searched, but it's fun it never the less there. I personally like happy endings, so to my taste, Zero no tsukaima has a great ending.
If there's anything i could do in this review, it's probably to tell you to watch. Since this Anime deserves it, and it doesn't take away to much time.

| Looking for an anime that doesn't require too much brain power to follow the plot? Characters that aren't too hard to understand but still likeable in some sense? Mild forms of ecchi as to not go too overboard but still enough to keep you interested? A little bit of magical elements but still a really basic background setting? Zero no Tsukaima is a pretty safe bet. Of course, the main focus is on the cute girls and the cheap romance - with a little action on the side. A very simple formula, but pretty effective if done right.
This anime is essentially a mediocre anime that is presented well - pretty nice animation and music that draws you in in the beginning, an overly emotional flatchested loliesque female failure-magician to keep things active, a well endowed fiery red-headed magician that seduces all the guys, a silent blue haired magician for those who like Rei-types, and a really immature but normal Japanese school boy thrown into the mix. The first 6 episodes focus on character development in a magic school setting between Louise and Saito, with a little intervention from the other girls which evokes jealousy from Louise.
From here, the story kind of takes a little pit fall as Louise and Saito are asked by the princess to take a side job. Presumably, these few middle episodes are meant to develop some sort of relationship between Louise and Saito, but throughout the whole series they never get any alone time as quickly either their own nosy school mates start to butt in or some sort of large national matter is at hand and it is up to Louise and friends (and not because they have any particular skill - but because she's friends with the princess) to save the day.
The last few episodes are basically just some large grand way to end things. Everything amongst the characters all the same, the atmosphere is the same light-hearted feeling with just a little bit more denial of personal feelings. As a result, the whole nation vs nation war was very fake and inconclusive. Then we have the ending which comes a bit quickly and doesn't really settle much - but there wasn't much to settle in the first place, was there?
Zero no Tsukaima pales in comparison to much of the good anime out there. Lacking a strong character romance progression, decent action scenes and epic storylines, it heavily relies on the awkward relationship between Louise and Saito - with the frequent intervention of other girls - as well as the 'fan service' of Louise and friends, with each character representing a certain type of female persona obsession. In the end, it wasn't too impressive but there were a few laughs from the interaction between Louise and Saito that I enjoyed.

| Fun. That's all this series has to offer. Nothing groundbreaking, nothing too awesome, nothing too dramatic, but downright fun.
Initial response to this would be some sort of Harry Potter/Shakugan no Shana hybrid, and why not: it features a same cast of voices as SnS set in a magic school where there are some political issues to deal with. Once our lucky hero Saito gets summoned to Tristein academy by our pink-haired loli Louise, trouble ensues in a series of predictable but fun events. People might say that the downside to this was that there weren't enough episodes (especially considering the 13 episodes span 3 volumes of the novel while there are 6 more that puts the characters through a turmoil of political and emotional angst), but obviously this is made for one season, so shoving in as much as possible is the best idea. When it comes down to the fun factor, it's 50% harem fun and 50% action fun.
The harem half is the better-off of the two halves. Girls left and right start falling for Saito, and it makes you think they're going to cast away Louise, who is the original target. Irresistable maid Siesta puts up a fine fight, tavern wench Jessica unfortunately only gets one episode, princess Henrietta gets a forced kiss, and Germanian Kirche scores the first battle but doesn't participate after. Of course, there is no other ending than Louise, though it's just not right for the 42% of the viewers who are rooting for Siesta (that's almost half the viewers!) (no, I did not pull numbers out of thin air).
The action half is worse-off than the harem. Utterly kick-ass when it happens, but utterly predictable. When the main character is given an all powerful rune, you just know he's going to win at the end, if not everything. Though the anime attempts to give you clues, they're just too obvious and takes the joy out of finding out our characters have these powers. Explanation is necessary, but they make our heroes a little cheap. However, when the actual action parts come around, they do keep you on the edge of your seat. Fluid and excellent battle scenes 80% of the time, plus a little surprise midway through the season. (The second surprise comes as no surprise, though - it showed up before it took part in battle, and it was spoiled in the OP already). Another predictability were the villains. They look more like badass brats than they are evil, even if they did make a little bloodshed.
Overall, it was just pure fun. If you're a fan of Shakugan no Shana, I recommend this.

| Zero's Familiar is a fantasy comedy that does not introduce anything new, but is nevertheless quite entertaining to watch.
Although there are no noticable big mistakes in the graphics or animation, everything has an outdated look to it. Zero's Familiar looks 1990s, not 2006.
The music isn't impressive either. Although there is nothing to complain about regarding the theme tunes, voice overs or the background music, nothing really caught my ear.
The anime started off like a comedy. There were numerous funny and ecchi moments in the first few episodes. The anime then shifted more towards adventure half way through, and then became a love/romance for the final few episodes. A good way to appeal to multiple audiences, but as a comedy lover, I found the anime decline in enjoyment as it progressed.
The characters in this anime is yet another unimpressive factor. None of them are particularly well developed, and very little is known regarding their past. Come to think of it, nothing is known about the past of the main characers at all, which does damage the storyline of the anime.
In general, there is nothing impressive about Zero's Familiar. People who enjoy comedy, adventure or romantic anime would probably like this anime to a certain extent. People who enjoy all three genres would probably like it a bit more. However, I do not see how anyone could love this anime especially with all the other high quality stuff that has been released so far.

| If you like the 2 main characters in Shakugan no Shana - They're the SAME MAIN CHARACTER voiceovers from that series but have a slightly different personality that contradicts their character roles in Shakugan no Shana.
Its good to know that the voice characters here have a good background with each other thus generating a more comfortable speech between these two characters in Zero no Tsukaima.
Worth watching. Has alot of funny moments. Don't like the perversions (very minor) in the anime because it's played out in almost every anime these days.
Oh well...
All in all...amazing story, animation, (so-so sound compared to others I've seen like Tsubasa Chronicle) and the characters were somewhat fresh along with the theme (magic+love = mahou sensei negima (?) mixed with a slight harem love hina-like taste developing amongst the characters)

| I've seen six episodes so far.
This anime is pretty interesting.
It starts off as Louise (accidently) summons a boy, Hiraga Saito, to be her familiar. Saito came from Earth, which is a different world from this "mage" world.
The main character, Saito, is kind of annoying. He's one of those nice guys who help others, not thinking of himself at all.
Anyway, it's pretty funny when Saito sees objects from his world (which were supposidly summoned there) and how the people of that world treasure them. I have good laughs when I see these parts.
The first episode (or two) are good, then it kind of slows down for a bit, then it gets better again. But this is only for the first six episodes...
