An interesting watch. Be warned, it can be somewhat confusing at times as the story is not very well strung together and at times can be completely irrelavent.

Its worth mentioning that there aren't any real twists in the story so for people who dont like that and prefer a straight up "this is what its like, lets see these characters draw their cards" anime, its worth the watch.

At first glance this anime looks like a waste of time, but I kept with it as soon as I found out this is a Black Jack series.

An anime about a female surgeon with X-ray eyes. My first impression of the anime was that it was lame, due to a poorly made first episode, but after which things got better. The operation scenes were good, it left me on the edge.

Animation could have been done up with more detail. For most scenes, the background was rather flat with the occasional characters in the story been badly drawn.

The story is rather X-Files type, cos of the mysterious fungi that can take over people's bodies, that concept was rather overused in the first half. After which the focus was more on Ray and her past, and the H-ring man's involvement into it. I liked how the story progressed, and it tries to answer the many questions that viewers are given at the start.

But what i found odd, was the H-ring man, how come he doesn't have a name? How come Sumire's eyes were given to Ray? Why would Koichi want to recreate the same world that he once lived in, wasn't it the white room which they were kept as test subjects? If Ray was the H-ring man's mum's clone, how come his mum wasn't all grown up like One or Ray?

Characters were rather bland IMO, Ray was always unmoved by Shinoyama's attempts to woo her. The nurses were slightly better and added more life to the show. Overall, there were no likeable characters , Ray could have been better developed personality wise, most of the time she was serious and usually carried the same serious expression.

The OP was a rather catchy tune while the ED was more mellow and slow paced. Some scenes were rather emotional with suitable BGM.

Overall Ray The Animation scores for its storyline. Though characters could have been better developed.

The first anime I have ever seen about doctors (or, more specifically, surgeries), it definately gets points for uniqueness. However, while many of the concepts of diseases and injuries are real, this anime takes many liberties with the facts and stretches the truth until this anime becomes more unrealistic than realistic.

The premise for the story is that Ray, whose eyes were taken from her by a mafia syndicate and replaced by "X-ray" eyes, uses her powers to perform surgeries which no other doctor can perform. This includes "super-cancers", heart problems, invented diseases, and supernatural illnesses. All of this leads to clues and questions concerning the "H-ringed man", the mysterious leader of the syndicate which stole Ray's eyes when she was a child. Ray develops very well throughout the story, as we see her past unveiled and see her struggles both as a doctor and a person recovering from a traumatic experience.

At her side is Shinoyama, her "partner", who invents things like artificial organs (which are apparently really easy to make considering how fast he does it) and secretely loves her; though it is an unrequited love, since the straight-laced Ray is only interested in the mysterious "Koichi".

Side characters like the nurses are interesting (though the first couple of episodes that showcase their martial arts skills are extremely silly. Speaking of silly martial arts moves, the head doctor at the hospital sports a belly-long beard, an eye-patch, and a peg-leg. A pirate? No, but his special "fighting move" involves him spinning really fast on his peg leg as he spins his fists. After I saw this in the first episode, I really considered dropping the series, but fortunately I stuck with it, and fortunately, there isn't much fighting and silly martial arts moves after that.

However, the mysterious "Black Jack", who replaced Ray's eyes is never explained, gets little screen time, and though Ray seems to know him we find nothing about his past or how he became such a good surgeon or where the "X-Ray" eyes came from in the first place.

The animation is not up to par with other 2006 animes, and while this really isn't much of a factor in this anime (no abundance of special effects) it is noticeably poor in places, with bland backgrounds and character models which arn't the best looking. The various diseases arn't too detailed-looking and seem incredibly bland and uninteresting for the most part.

The soundtrack is good; opening theme is a good, energitic punk rock song, while the ending is a more melodramatic and melancholic slow song which both fit the ebb and flow of the storyline. As to the voices, the voice actors were all good; especially the person who voiced the somewhat-insane H-ringed man, and the woman who voiced Ray.

The story in this anime changes pace a few times; in the beggining it is fairly fast, then it slows down for the majority of the series, and then in the last few episodes the pace is like that of a jet plane, with amazing plot twists and events occuring several times an episode.

The only problems I have with the storyline is the disregard for reality and the plot holes. There isn't much explanation on how these unrealistic happenings come about, or how the H-ringed man does what he does, etc. The ending of the story was very good, however, and I loved the many plot twists that occur, especially in the end of the story.

I won't be rewatching this anime; and while I might reccomend this anime to those looking for a change of settings in anime, I wouldn't reccomend this to just anyone.

I enjoyed this anime, but I wish it had been more realistic, with less supernatural occurences and unexplainable occurences.

An anime that may not be a lot of people's cup of tea, but definitely one anime that receives my attention when I found out that it is about a female surgeon with an ability to see through everything with her X-Ray eyes. The concept may not be original, but it is something refreshing since in the past 5 years of watching anime, I can't seem to find any good animes that pursues this field of genre so far.

Some of us may think that it may be a boring anime with just some young female surgeon who performs operation on some patient with illnesses, but we need to hold that thought for a while. All of the diseases that are conveyed in the anime does not exist in real life. Some them includes disappearing tumour (it is as though it is alive!! Believe me, it can hide!!), magnetic tumour, and lots more interesting ones. That alone made me glued to my seat throughout the series and some of the operation scenes just blow you away. Those components add some tension and climactic intensity to the story.

Of course, the story does not end with just all those procedures and the intensity inside the operation rooms. The story will also take you deeper into the history of the surgeon and the people around her, and of course, as the series near the ending, some surprising facts are revealed that totally blows me away.

With the interesting concept and intriguing story, this anime is one that you should not miss, but of course, not so outstanding that you may want to rewatch or even collect.

This is the first story I've seen about medical profession. Its more like ER with power characters. The story starts very nice, then it wanes down few eps before slowly picking up again, which is clealry something bad about this anime. Mind you the medical professions in this anime defy logic, and clearly all treated cases are out of this world. Its more like superman doctors.
