Top Wo Nerae! is one of these classical shows, which, unlike Sailor Moon and the like, can't survive the passing age. While by no means it is bad, it simply doesn't offer much to entertain the present viewer.

While animation is good, it pales in comparison to the recent blockbuster mecha fighting shows. Characters, while pretty good, don't really grow on you, as the show ends before their have a chance to. Story is not the most exciting thing in the world either. While it kicks the ass of all those filler-filled lame shows around, because of its simplicity it can't really compare itself to elaborate storylines of next age anime. If you really don't have anything else to watch - you can always give this old classic a shot. Though if you have many other anime in your watchlist - Top wo Nerae is best passed. You wont lose anything if you'll miss it, you wont gain anything if you'll watch it.

NOTE: This review is being written a full year after viewing this series.

What’s Gunbuster all about? Well, there is an alien race which has attacked Earth, and men are now fighting these aliens. One valiant captain loses his life leaving his daughter orphaned – Gunbuster is the story of her life. And how she fulfills her father’s dream. On other things, Gunbuster is the series which put Gainax as a leading animation studio in Japan (this is the same studio which on going forward produced series like NGE, FLCL and the most recent Tengen Toppa…) However the studio first popular work was this one – the series which is put on a pedestal by all the mecha fans.

Now I am no mecha fan, I just want to be entertained. Gunbuster does this rather well due to its peculiarities. I have never seen or heard about any mecha series in which the robots are made to aerobics, skipping ropes and push ups! But this is precisely what the entire first episode of this OVA is about! All the heroine does is to learn how to balance her mecha and fight with it. Another entertaining aspect is the way it uses the sci-fi aspects – a common recurring theme throughout the OVA is how time moves slowly when the velocity is close to that of light (Einstein’s relativity). Hence the series lasts for over 100 years but the lead characters don’t age even two years! And some sci-fi scenes are so outrageous that are pure ROFL material (humans creating black holes, and a 200 meter mecha are some of them).

But then there is one weakness – and that is lack of a proper plot. For a six episode OVA, you could have hoped for a coherent plot. However Gunbuster has a pure episodic plot. There are no proper explanations as to why the aliens are attacking either – they are attacking for reason unknown. Also the characters are not that great (to me the longer I can remember the character, the better the characterization is). For Gunbuster, this is not the case – I do have some vague of the main two females but they were nothing exceptional. The lead female in particular felt like a precursor to the famous weeper – Shinji (NGE). For the first three episodes her character was that of a crybaby character. The other female takes the role of the protector, the caring ‘onee-sama’. (Yes, there are some shoujo-ai elements in this series).

How does Gunbuster feel like after being 20 years old? Well, for one it doesn’t have the feeling as prehistoric. I could see it without it feeling very dated. If concerns about the plot are left out (Gunbuster disappointed be because of this reason - I was in the mood to see something legendary), the series is quite fun. It is not as classic as it is made out in mecha circles – the main aspect I remember about the series is its eccentric 1st episode and the good/silly sci-fi references. Go ahead and watch it, after all watching some old stuff is fun to see just to know ‘how was mecha done back in those days’. Its just 150 in runtime anyways. And in case you really dig this, there is always Gunbuster 2.

This is not overated, it' s only because I' m a very very VERY BIG fan of old school anime!! when I first heard of Gunbuster i Knew it would be in my favorite anime...and I wasn' t wrong ^^!!!!
This is also one of the firt project of Gainax animation studio, and still one of its best, why? cuz even after all those years it still an empressive, accomplish and trilling MUST SEE classic!!

THE ANIMATION.....most of my friend would say:
- ho my god!! look at the crapy design!
- Yeah!!!By the way CG effect is a lot better
- ho and the color are so lame!!
- you got that right man!!
- Yeah!!! CG color is a lot better....
BUT! can someone tells the me title of a masterpiece release like Akira, Wings of Honneamise or Gunbuster..., (Except Diebuster) since they started using CG in animes?
Okey, it might have some mistake in the draw, but still... the Animation of gunbuster is sooo amazing and fluid! the action scene are kick ass, the characters really shows well their emotions, plus it had bouncing lol!!! and the explosions are sublime!! overwall after 20 years it keeps all its beauty and I' ll never be tired of gunbuster visual!!!

Sound effect, Voice acting and musical score of gunbuster is sooo nolstalgic and retro, make is one of my all time favorite hear enjoyment of all time!!! When a girl cry i' m sad, when a girl scream my blood freeze , when they talking about dramatic stuff I freak!!! and when there is a intence music I hold my breath!!! what can I ask more... the thing is almost perferct!

The story is cliché, but still have some aspect of it own too! BUT WHEN IT COMES OUT, IN 1989, IT WAS ALL BRAND NEW STUFF !!! I do admit that some parts are predectible.... anyway, it ' s always turn out good!! But if you can go over the edge. you' ll see that all the plots and characters developement are well made and interesting!!!! So much stuff in 6 episode, it make you feel so full once it' s over!! pure enjoyement!!!

THE CHARACTER!! Good looking chick, strange swiming suit and MENS!!! not some wimpy guys with incredible hairstyle and super skinny body, nooo.... MENS!!! with tough voice and cool atitude! By the time those who read this will surely figure out that I love gunbuster characters! they' re all have they respective personnality! yet every aspect and value is there and all the needed roles for a good story are filled!! and even if the relationship developement betwen most of the character is growing quickly, Gainax still manage to made it really interesting and fun to watch!!

Re watch this Anime... I will!! and so do my children!!! I wish that everyone in this world could love this anime as much as I do!
All the thing needed for a perfect unforgetable enjoyement!!

This is actually one good looking anime even though its almost 20 years old. The story is like gundam Seed but with all the cliche's of a big-robot save the earth can be. Is it bad, no but they manage to do the ccliche's quite well even though you know whats going to happen to the story.
This anime is also known as top wo narae! or aim for the top

This, to my knowledge, is one te first and most important OVAs of all time; it was Gainx's first project and a precursor to Evangelion.

This short show is great, though if you dislike old stuff you may not like it, it has many "cliches" of more modern show's, yet, in my opinion, since this was the original source of the cliches, they hold out much more better though time.

Gunbuster is about Noriko Takaya, a girl who becomes a space cadet in Earth's ultimate fight against an apocalyctic alien menace, and her tribulations in doing so; she suffers a lot of personal trauma, as time flys by in Earth, yet for her time passes slowly because she's in space; between trips, her friends get a lot older, and everything changes in Earth, wich produces angst and loniliness in her.

The story is interesting in it's aspects the passage of time in space and Earth, space fights, space travel, etc.; it's pure Sci-Fi, and even though it sometimes silly and campy, it's well though out and WAY better than some similar shows of less age.

The characters are fun and develop nicely through the show, specially the main trio, Noriko, Kazumi Amano, and Jung Freud (lol), though don't reach amazing levels; deep enough though, and fun.

The animation is fluid, detailaed and colorful, and look great almost 20 years later, and the music is ok.

I reccomend this show because it's really a piece of history in anime, and it's very fun, yet somewhat intelligent entertainment; if you like old shows, or at least, don't hate them, take a look at this.

Gunbuster is probably what most of us would expect from an 80's mecha anime. The characters yell out their attack names. Actually, they yell at everything. The whole bit is over-dramatized. Strangely, the animation still holds well by today's standards. There are some awkward bits that may not look perfect, but the explosions and most of the objects looks very good.

The main story is a little disjointed, and all the characters have a pretty simple outlook. The concept of skipping through time and how that affects ones life is an interesting one though.

Overall, Gunbuster is a pretty enjoyable anime. Noriko is a pretty cool character, and even if she screams a lot and cries a lot, like any 80's anime character, some aspects of her actions are surprisingly complex and moving. It does suffer from dreadful corniness though.

(U.S. Renditions subbed VHS rip of which the license has expired, so download without worries about legal consequences)

The first 2 episodes tested my patience. I was thinking is this really Gainax, the guys who did Wings of Honneamise a year before Gunbuster? It mattered also that I saw Yukikaze prior to Gunbuster so it took some time for the eye to get used to the graphics.
But fortunately the 80's yet again prove why they are considered the golden era of animes.

This is an anime for all anime fans. Whether you like ecchi, comedy, action, mecha, sci-fi, romance you will not be dissapointed. Considering this is a 6 episode OVA, Gainax excelled themselves. Probably the first episodes focused on comedy and ecchi more, thats why they werent that appealing. It mattered from what I've read that the producers initially planned to make a parody, as is apparent in the first episodes but later the anime gets more serious.

That is the part where finally true Gainax kicks in and the viewer gets one of the best 80's action sci-fi titles.

True the characters were hardly worth symphatizing, and how could they after so much fanservice and the whole idea of someone travelling near the speed of light requires further explanation than the ultra-funny sequences in the start of each episode. Some moments are over-dramatic and rather laughable. But this is what makes older animes truly classics. All that hand drawn improvisation in animation and direction is 1000 times better and more enjoyable than the current batch of computer enhanced animes.I agree that the ending is of the most original and touching in anime and it proves why Gainax made some of the most influential animes of all time.

A masterpiece in direction and action, should be an example for the more recent animes to follow and a must watch for all Gainax and anime fans, despite its age.

This was a hell of lot cooler than I thought it would be. I expected this to be some pseudo funny fanservice show with mechas and explosions in space but it turned out to be one epic adventure.

Starting with the first episode it didn't look too good. Got some girls in school, mechas doing ridiculous stuff, by an insight of an infinitively cool coach a newcomer is revealed to be the hottest mecha pilot of all time etc. But that was just the first episode. Then they get to space. Everything starts to change. Even though the main character Noriko goes through a pretty standard "I can't do anything, I will do my best, a hero is born" cycle, I didn't really roll my eyes at any stage. The hardships she had to go through felt truly nasty and as she emerges like a butterfly in the third episode, my mind wasn't in its normal ironic "well, isn't that nice" status but I was more than willing to root for her.

Rooting for the main character is one thing but the best part of Gunbuster is that it's freaking epic. Space battles are huge things with the whole Milky Way lighted up with beams and explosions. Only Seikai no Senki can rival this. Also worh mentioning is the soundtrack that delivers exciting and grandiose tunes behind these battles making up half the mood. And as we're talking epic, the series also uses relativity of time to increase the impact. As they travel near the speed of light, they constantly get behind time compared to Earth. As Noriko receives a message from her school friend saying that she is probably dead of old age before she can see Noriko again, it really has an impact and brings more meaning to the sacrifices the space pilots do.

I already talked about Noriko and her development but there are a couple of other characters worth mentioning. They are Noriko's best friend Kazumi, a good pilot from the beginning and Coach who is responsible for finding Noriko and her talent. As Kazumi spends the most time with Noriko, it's pretty interesting to see how their relationship developes as Noriko changes. At the same time the godly Kazumi shows some human sides of herself. Coach isn't that much developed but is a mysterious father character who is indirectly responsible for some of the more exciting moments of the series. Others felt quite superficial. Honorary mention goes to Jung Freud. What were her parents thinking when they named her?

Animation is the key point to regonizing this anime is from the 80's. It's clumsy and jerky. Character designs are plain and not too appealing. Thank god the story is strong enough to make forget about it. Soudntrack is good as mentioned before but voice acting doesn't get that high marks. Especially Noriko's voice is annoyingly squeeky.

Gunbuster is a good scifi story. It tells a grand story of war and universe through individuals much like the Stars-trilogy. To end the review I'll mention the ending of the series. Absolutely touching. Wow. One of the best endings ever. Awesome. Epic. Incredible. Etc.

I watched this like 8years ago. Now i just finished watching it again. Yes, i still think its one of the best.

Animation definitely is outdated compar to those now. Even so, i personally thinks that they still looks great. They didnt reuse animation like GSD crap. Every single movement were created for a reason.

The sound can trash even most of the animes now. Bueatiful musics which suits the situation. They will made u cry.

It was about this giant robot named gunbuster who save humanity? No, actually the main theme in this title is time, frenship and the future. Which i think after watching it made me into a better person and a better thinker.

Characters have to deal with death, aging problem when they travels in light speed. As their frens in earth will aged when they r traveling in space. I would feel lonely if my frens age faster and die before me .. It realli makes me cry.

A must buy even though it is created decades ago. It trash modern animes. I enjoyed it 8yrs ago and this very moment.

The feeling i had after watching the show realli makes me feel like doing a review for this great title. Thats why im here. It just makes u think why animes in the past is so much better than those currently.

Gunbuster is one of the earlier works of what was the best serious Sf production studio of the early and mid 90's Gainax... back when Gainax knew how to make an ending... and here we go on a long and blurry road of nostalgia as I review this 80's anime.

Animation and Sound:
Both are outdated.. there might have been good back then but the Sf animes animation ages very fast and the robots look really silly now aldough I have to apreciate the tons of work throwned in to make all those crowded scenes.. the sound effects aren't that great either aldough the voice acting is excellent.

Story and Characters:
Even dough by today's standard everything from the animation, to sound and characters (we have the "reach the goal and never give up girl", the "hard working sempai", the "violent girl") are outdated there is one part that still manages to stand strong as a legacy to the future, it's story... yes it explores interesting ideas such as human race fighting for survirval against the anticorps of the Universe, time travell and the speed of light, human advance in technology, and it combines it in a clumbssy way but kinda cute and melodramatic like one of those romance movies and it closes everything up with a wonderful ending full of hope.

Value and enjoyment:
Probably an incredibile anime at that time, as all the Sf movies and animes it can't keep up the value as it get old because it has a huge base in scientific speculation and the future of manking which continouslly changes as we evolve... unlike drama animes like Grafe of Fireflies which can age beautifly since it's based on human nature and emotion that stays the same... At the end i advise people to watch it since it's a real classic, a page of anime history that can be enjoyable if you're looking more folr story than action.

Pretty average for a sci-fi anime. Animation and music was decent, considering that this was made from Gainax. The concept on this wasn't really as great as I thought. Most of characters were less memorable that had some less value to the story. As for the main character, she wasn't really in-depth to the whole storyline, and tends to be annoying. Aliens weren't as creative from within the plot, such as their own objective and their character design of the whole thing. Above all, it's not too bad of a watch. It has its good moments for this one to be involving with the mecha Gunbuster. But really hasn't been one of my good titles up until now.

GunBuster is very engaging and excellent made OVA series. Despite its age, it doesn't lack the qualities of a good anime. However, I think what it lacks is passion, strong character development and a strong tie between Noriko and her situtation

First off, although the animation is a bit aged in terms of style, I feel that it is done better than many of the simplistic yet colorful styles of anime today. The use of colors and the detail in drawings are quite nice.

As for character, I feel that since it is so short, despite Noriko's wide range of emotions, you don't really get attached to her. I mean there are proud moments and sad moments, but she's not really a character that is memorable. In such animes, I feed the other pilots to be more interesting. This anime seems to be more of an action piece.

Story wise, well this is the most unrealistic part of this story. I don't understand why robots would be doing laps and push ups. Sure, synchronization, but doing this type of training is kind of hilarious. Furthermore, the basis of this story is very common, such as working hard to train for some goal and going through all these hardships to carry out the goal. The robots they use are just too funny.... and weird

Value, this has the ability to be quite memorable depending on who watches it. It is just short enough to be enjoyable with too many unnecessary spare parts lying around.

I semi-enjoyed this anime because of its realism in terms of character reaction to the situation. Noriko starts out as a hesitant and unconfident characters but although a bit cliched, she searches for her father and deals with her new space situtation.. The way this anime was put together radiates a nice feeling. Just i feel a lack of passion in the people's actions.

I had a chance to rewatch this show and it still holds up very well compared to today's anime. The animation does look a bit dated but for its day it was top notch. The stroy is timeless and would work today as it did back in 1989. If they redid it with today's animation techniques another generation of Gunbuster fans would be born. I think the shows length works in its favor as it keeps the story compact and fast paced. The basic premise of the show itself is not new, humans must eliminate an alien race bent on its destruction, but the characters and storytelling keep you entranced. Even with the death of characters you can feel all the emotion and suffering of the surrounding cast. A sign of great writing in my opinion. Some might find it "chessy" or overly melodramatic, but I love this kind of stuff. The ending just left me awestruck and I had to go out and tell everyone to go out and watch this.

Hey, not bad not bad at all. Acutally this is one of the most interesting oav I ever seen. The source I seen is HDVD-Rip done by zx which got hardsub. Now.. I can't say they got a bad art work, they just in bad era of anime. Back in mid 80' you all know it was the bad time of the century and all the shit start falling. I would have guess that the last ep. of series was out of fund. It was in black and white. But don't aleart by this, others ep. was filled with color with a terrifice artwork.

The story was cool, I still can't belive they got all thouse information in the short 6 oav. The background ideas was cool too. You gotta love space and time conflicts and such. The story wrap up in good speed. They showed the scenes where good, and skip the boring one. Since it a short oav, you have to sactifies some of the chars development and relation. Overall, this series is cool if you like space and time idea. Also they did gave up a happy(chessy) ending :D

Gainax's best piece of work to date, and probably the best thing they'll ever make. Why? Because it's totaly not what gainax is known for. The fact that this has a good story with a real ending alone deserves props from all the anti-gainax people out there. Infact, I wonder if Gainax fired the script writer of this after they found out that it had an ending o_o

Gunbuster has it all. Action, drama, cool characters, and great animation for the time. There's mechs, kids in space (but this time, it's actualy done well), some macross parodies, and a serious side to outerspace travel that many of us probably dont think about. This was an instant classic with me, and seeing how gainax has made a gunbuster sequel, I'm wondering if they'll gain back some faith from viewers who are tired of the non-ending they're great for slapping together.

A+ Gainax. You've earned it with this one.

I don't remember when I saw this but it was awhile ago, probably over 10 years ago, and the LD's were so much better than VHS.

Anyways, this was a very good show. The art was excellent, I remember enjoying it very much, and I still like it to this day.

The OP and ED was sort of catchy, but I think you'll outgrow it, as I still remember the somewhat annoying voice.

The main character, Noriko, is very much a whining crybaby, not that she cries too much, but may get somewhat annoying. The supporting cast does a good job, with a little bitterness and jealousy in between.

The story takes the crew on a mission, far, far away. Because of this, it makes the last episode, which is 99.9% in black and white, exceptional.

I would love to see a continuation to this, but it probably won't be possible, the way the story goes.

A very good classic and very much recommended.

This is the best thing Gainax every created, and sadly anything they put out afterwards just cannot compare. The animation still holds up very well and while the last ep is black and white, it still works for me and makes the episode even more effective. The story is absolutely incredible and I was just left in awe when the final credits started rolling. I cannot recommend this show enough as it is a essential classic of anime fandom.

I have to subtract one point for the scene where the buster machine pulls out the cape. That was just stupid.

this one is highly recommended! even though it is old, it is still above average! and i finally understand more about how wierd space can be. but is it really possible for a woman to live for 12 thousand years?! the details are too good for its year, the sound is, well, youre just gonna have to appreciate it, the story is epic but still different, characters are good as usual when gainax makes them.
