Though stories about post apocalyptic world where humans are as good as extinct ceased to be original fifty or so years ago, Ergo Proxy manages to stand firm and above most of such shows, retaining its distinctive style, despite having embraced a clichéd idea.

It is actually quite hard to write a review about Ergo Proxy. For starters it falls into dementia category (Texhnolyze, Lain, Boogiepop Phantom and the like), it also portrays an already boring idea in a new, and I must say, really confusing way. I mean, even though the plot is nowhere near as confusing as in Texhnolyze, Ergo Proxy is still probably best at keeping its main idea hidden under layers and layers of stuff. Even now, after watching the show and postponing my review for nearly a week, I'm still not sure what did exactly Ergo Proxy wanted to tell. That humans are foolish? That the future without humans is better for the sake of earth's ecosystem? That humans worship false idols out of their insecurity and bring destruction upon themselves whenever they go? Heh, all those ideas are far too superficial for Ergo Proxy. I guess, the real thing they wanted to tell cannot be put in words, it can only be experienced. And while, Ergo Proxy loses to other dementia shows in terms of being groundbreaking, it still is a great piece to boot.

Interested in allegorical anime? Here's your meal. While it might not be good as the shows inspired by ABe, it still kicks some serious ass in philosophical department. Oh yeah, and don't forget the symbols, I actually lucked out downloading shinsen subs for Ergo Proxy, as they try to explain every single symbol in the show. Heh, you never know how much of references can one pack in a single episode...

I thought that “Ergo Proxy” was a good anime, but after a week I couldn’t free myself from its influence. So now I must tell that this is excellent series. I haven’t seen a so good cyberpunk anime since “Ghost in the Shell”. It’s a very deep story about our place in life, love and emotions. Every episode has something to tell and you must pay attention to a message hidden in them.
I think animation is very good. I love Rei. She is simply beautiful. Furthermore Proxies are masterpieces of imagination. They gave this anime incredible atmosphere.
I don’t need to say anything about the sound because as it should be it’s very good. Opening (Kiri by Monoral) and Ending (Paranoid Android by Radiohead) are melodies that you won’t be able to forget.
I think that the story is very interesting. It’s not for people that like more action than talking. You must be able to open your mind very widely to pay attention to every detail. The story is deep, sad and mystic but gives hope. The plot surprises very often. World created in the anime is very realistic and you ask question: “Could that be our world?”.
I recommend Ergo Proxy for every fun of cyberpunk and s-f also for people that like intelligent stories.

Is a nice series very deep in meaing, about our reason to exist, who we are, etc. When this story begans u have no idea of how is the outside world of the city, it seems it set in a future city, i a typical sci-fi environment where everything is centray managed, people are controled, and some kids do strange experimets on badly deformed people, but as the story goes it is found out that is noting like that lol. it gives totaly misleading impression at start. Ending has nice surpise so watch it you going to love it.

Last thing reminded me alot of serial expeiment lain.

as others have mentioned the first several episodes are entrancing. the world of Romdeau and autoreivs and domes is derivative of science fiction motifs but still feels original. Lil and Vincent and Pino are actually pretty solid characters overall, each adding to the show.

It starts falling apart around halfway thru. A few episodes start becoming mired in dream sequences that aren't perfectly executed, leaving you with a "huh" feeling instead of being impressed. The plot starts losing its spark as well, and by the end it gets convulted and a little hokey.

I feel this one had a lot of potential to be truly great but it loses something as the show progresses. too bad, but still well worth watching.

the animation is for the most part good, but at times the characters, especially Lil, look downright weird as the art is inconsistent.

the intro sequence is gorgeous. definitely a new favorite.

You 'll need patience and attention to details to enjoy Ergo Proxy. Yes, it has a fast opening and then a dive but you need that dive to get to know the characters at a deeper level and dispense the tidits of info that would help you put the picture together in the end.

There is only 1 filler episode imo - ep 19. I fast forwarded through that one cos that should have been a half episode.

Many shows hang a carrot on the last episode. It kinds of feel like they hang half of the meal on the last episode because in a 3 min dialog, you solve all the questions you have in the last 22 episodes. You are rewarded with the Ah-ha moment if you are able to hold your questions till the end. And they are logically thought out if you try to understand the implications and what was not said.

“Missed opportunity” is the concept that comes to mind when I think of Ergo Proxy.
The first few chapters were simply fascinating: the best opening I’ve ever seen in an anime, great music), dark and complex storyline –packed with conspiracies and dark secrets-, violent action, futuristic setting, excellent voice acting, unusually high animation value, fantastic character and environment design (Lilith’s gothic look couldn’t get any cooler, and the disturbingly cold looking cyborgs or autoreivs, add some tension by their mere presence) … I could go on and on. I felt as if they had mixed Blade Runner, Ghost in the Shell, and a bit of Orwell’s “1984”, into the best anime ever. Hell, it even managed to add some subtle references to movies like “The Untouchables”.

Unfortunately, as soon as chapter 5, the storyline takes a twist, it departs completely from its tracks, and even the leading character is changed. Instead of the cool looking, silent and clever detective Lilith, we get stuck with the dumb, naive, boring and eternally confused Vincent. Instead of the fantastic futuristic model society with a dark secret, we are taken into a deserted landscape. Instead of a complex storyline, we’re presented a “road movie” were pretty much nothing relevant happens, not even much “character growth” goes on; the plot gets a lot more “anime-like” instead of the cinematic feeling it once had and even the animation quality gets severely reduced at times. It truly felt as if they had run out of money and ideas by the fourth chapter. To add some extra frustration, continuity and logic are often destroyed intentionally during this section of the story, unexplainably setting some chapters in completely out-of-context and foolish “worlds” with no relation to anything that’s going on. Other chapters (most of them, actually) are just fillers.

The only reason I kept on watching through all this garbage was the opening, which continually reminded me how good the show originally was. Thank god, by chapter 18, things get a little better, retaking the plot and original setting, although any time the story managed to build some tension, it was inmediatly watered down by another filler chapter. Things develop rapidly and incoherently towards the end, into a “grand finale” that doesn’t explain much and doesn’t even make much sense.

All in all, I’d say that Ergo Proxy is worth taking a look, but definitely doesn’t live up to the expectations the first few chapters rise.

The story is disjointed and there are holes in it. It will make you think. You might have to watch some episodes a second time after you are done with the series. The animation quality tends to fluctuate, especially in regard to faces.

But, it has a great theme and really establishes it mood quite effectively. I liked the fact that you had think, and that it is open to interpretation. If each episode is taken as it's own, seen as a unique entity within a common universe, anyone will get a lot more out of this anime.

My pick for the best serie of 2006. It got an overwhelming story that can only been matched by some great novels. All the philosophia surrounding the whole situation of powers is impressive and yet really logic. This is the kind of thing that make you think. Sincerely, I couldn't wait to see more and I probably saw the whole 23 episodes in 2 days.

If you read this, maybe you should read my other reviews as well. I am an anime fan for more than 5 years but I just open an account. I am a philosopher, so for me anything that doesn't reflect any kind of learning is useless, for that reason, I only look to find more of these series that are pure japanese gems.

I said it again, it's the best anime of 2006. All the philosophia surrounding power, AI and life is present here. Treat yourself and listen to this one.

Personally, i like intelligent anime. I like being able to use my mind to solve riddles and simpy follow the story by having to think trough things. But i have to disagree with some of the people posting before me. Story-wise, i think Ergo Proxy is quite chaotic and too sci-fi for my taste.

I fancy the dark and cold atmosphere, but unlike Andre's comment on the episodes, i never felt tempted to keep watching this anime after i'd watched a few episodes. However, i did watch them all, and even though i still have it stored on my comp (mostly because i haven't bothered deleting it), i'll most likely never watch it again.

As mentioned before, i think the story was more chaotic than confusing. It had a promising start, but putting the unique concept aside - the following episodes were rather mediocre. I really liked the intro/outro regarding music, animation and editting. It's probably the coolest intro i've ever seen in an anime, and the ending song by Radiohead never bores me, so i actually bothered watching them in about every episode.

The sound effects and animation were great - background sounds and general sounds like when they're talking in a hall where the sounds resonate like in a church, really impressed me. I do think the animation was really good, but the faces look slightly distorted sometimes. Voiceovers were good as well. It's rare that i actually notice a difference in voiceovers, but in this case it was exceptionally well done.

It's not a bad anime, but don't expect to be constantly entertained, like Andre obviously was. I just wish they had put more time into making the story less chaotic and less filler-like.

Ergo Proxy is an anime which needs time and a lot of thinking. For someone who wishes to watch a anime with no thinking needed, Ergo Proxy is not your choice, but if you are looking for a great anime with a compelling story line and which is overly enjoyble, this is one anime I personally recommend.

Ergo Proxy is an epic achievement. Every episode from the first to last keeps you gripped and makes you want to watch more and more. It does however get a little confusing at parts, but these creases are soon smoothened out by explanations in later episodes. There isn't much to say about the story without spoiling it for you so I can just recommend watching it and experiencing it for yourself. Definately worth watching.

When I began watching this anime, I wasn't sure what to expect. Well, I can understand how the first three episodes will turn a lot of people off. Ergo Proxy is one of those sci-fi mystery anime that is complex and can get complicated at times.

Set in the future, the story begins with some kind of experiment with a creature...but something happens and it seems the creature escapes... I will not ruin the plot any further, but i will mention that the overall story deals with a society that is trying to become a Utopia and how far the government will try to keep it from falling apart.

For me, there was something about the overall story that made me want to finish this show. If you can wait till episode four, then you'll see the story start to kick off. By the middle of the series, I was hooked and watched episode after episode.

But why must this anime slowly veer off course, then spiral down into confusion at the end puzzles me, cause the show was building up some potential. It's one of those endings that everything feels like it's being crammed in. Plus, there were two episodes that I felt weren't even necessary for the story, and simply felt like bad fillers that could have been summed up in ten minutes. This was the biggest turn off for me, and I felt disappointed with the ending.

The characters were somewhat enjoyable, and you did get a feel for the different personalities, but for the romance part, I really think it would've lightened up the whole story if they added just a little more emotion or something.

Overall, the first half of the show is alright, and the story concept is interesting, but it's the last half, especially the very end that gives it little replay value.

This anime is unnecessarily slow, too esoteric, and just don't have enough pizzaz to really make this anime a enjoyable experience. For 24 episode I rarely see action and when I do see it it is short and nothing too ground breaking. The whole mystery thing also drags on and on until the very end they rush it at an extreme speed.

To add to its general structural flaws, characters are hollow. Vincent is half-interesting but I just couldn't find myself to care about him. This anime in general is devoid of emotion to really make connection with its viewers.

I don't want to spoil the anime too much, but the turn they take at the end is really the wrong turn to take in my opinion. making things a bit apocalypic isn't necessarily bad, but it all just comes too quick.

I really didn't get why they did not develop one of their most interesting thought, and that has to do with the virus. What if robots have emotions like humans? How should they did treated? I will not broaden this question to our society, but definitely it could be an interesting one to think about in the context of diversity. however, this theme is not properly developed, and at the end it is dropped.

Eventually at the end you will be left with question unanswered, your emotions not stimulated, your thoughts confused, and your time wasted. If you really got timeto waste and wanna watchsomething hald interesting, I think this anime might not be too bad of the time killer.

One of the most interesting animes I've seen in the last year. Though it seems that the main view of animation quality lay upon the first episode. Don't understand me wrong. The following 22 episodes are still well animated but the first one is just a level above.
The storyline was as well very interesting with a few pretty weird episodes at the end (Go this "well... ohhhh-kaaayyy... let's just watch this again so maybe we will understand"-effect.

Still I'd recommend everyone who has seen movies like Equilibrium or read books like 1984 to watch this anime...
really entertaining Sci-Fi.

The animation is superb. The story is extremly complex and dark.
I really liked the sound of the anime, it has a good touch. The development of the characters is good. In general terms the anime is superb so far.
However, sometimes the animation is to dark, in my opinion in needs an equilibrium between the dark scenes and the ones that has more light. In oder words, sometimes is hard to see whats happening.
Nevertheless, I highly recommend this anime for those who like cyber punk and dark stories; also for an intellectual audience.
This is one of the few animes that it should be seen.

This is a new form of animation for me. The mix between the computer graphics and actual drawings really go together well. The sound is great along with the goth- sci-fi story.
So far i've only seen up to the first volume, but i was certianly impressed.

Ergo Proxy. A new generation dark Sci-Fi who offers more than just Mecha and Androids. It's unique storyline and beautiful animations and perfectly-fitted dark environment makes it probably one of the best animes of 2006, perhaps even the best (depending on your own thoughts and preferences ofcourse)

Now the animation. EP has an amazing animation, suitable until the end. Dark ambience, smooth movements, and well designed characters makes it to perfect the entire anime. I personally liked the fact small details weren't forgotten as the main character's make-up which tends to enhance her serious, darker mood.

The opening and ending songs are very good. Though it is an anime, they are sung in english (and sung quite well), but don't let that put you off. 99% of people don't understand japanese, so I think they won't mind to hear it in english.
The problem of the more mature and darker animes, is that you can't abuse with the sound throughout the entire anime, or it dampens the 'feeling' the authors wanted. One Example is the anime 'Monster', considered the best anime of 2004, 'Monster' is able to carry the right thoughts and states-of-mind throughout it's entirety (+70 eps). In EP, it's pretty much the same, but it still seems to stay a bit short to Monster. Still very good in most accounts.

Story... complexity was expected, as it is related to alot of animes of this caliber. What wasn't expected was it was so good. The characters' subtle contributions and links also had their share in the construction of EP. I'm glad Pino was there, dark shows need to have it's ray of light, or it becomes boring and rapidly fatigued of it.

A very enjoyable anime, for someone who likes both Sci-fi and Dark. I got hooked right away from the second or third episode. Try it, but don't expect much light moments or giggles.

After seeing so many positive reviews for this anime, I was really looking forward to seeing it. However, I just could not get into it. I gave it chance after chance after chance and yet it still disappointed me. I gave the series three incomplete scores as I never got past the fourth episode.

The animation quality was phenomenal in the parts that I could make it out to be, but boy, for every scene that was viewable, it seemed just as well that there was just the same amount that wasn't watchable. The animation was so dark, I could hardly make out very much. I wondered if it had anything to do with the screen resolution, but that shouldn't be it. How can anybody stand to watch something and then be in the complete dark 15 seconds later, guessing what the hell is going on. The whole point of anime and film for that matter is to be able to watch something with the volume off and still be able to make out the story. This show frustrated me to no end. Very disappointed the animators chose to go the direction they went, setting the show primarily in an environment where lighting was seemed nonexistent. Great potential, but everytime things seemed to build, they staggered back down as it became a guessing game. Action sequences became a pitch black screen with flashes of light as details mimicking gunfire and kinetic movement of martial combat. Then it was over, and we're left to see the characters exit the room/area, bit by bit, body part by body part.

The series reminded me of the couple episodes in "Basilisk", where the animators went to the dark style. In an action show, why would anyone want to hide the action. I understand it's for a psychological purpose, but if it overly annoys, then it becomes problematic. There should have been a balance. This series feels like you either have it to watch it or you hate it and can't stand it. Unfortunately, I am of the latter.
