| I havent seen a single anime episode, just perused the manga from the first to the last volume in 3 days and found it one of the most entertaining mangas ever.
I didnt plan to watch the anime because of that. But this movie caught my interest because first it was directed by Mamoru Oshii and second it had some of the themes of the animes and live-action movies he later directed. And it almost caused a friction between him and the mangaka because this hasnt anything to do with UY at all, judging from the 34 manga volumes I read. And if it did, in the manga it was delivered in a much simpler and funnier way.
A slight problem was that I had to get used to the anime characters and I couldnt discern or remember who was who in the beginning. But as the movie slowly progressed and the plot developed it managed to keep my interest till the end. It certainly needs to be rewatched but I dont think a charged swimsuit clad alien with horns and her silly boyfriend, as well as the other wacky characters are appropriate for a serious sci-fi story. There are better movies for that even by the same director, like Twilight Q.
Were the characters different and darker the movie would have been more noteworthy.
A nice watch if you seek a not so ordinary plot though and dont mind that this is about UY. I wonder if Ranma or Inuyasha characters took their place what effect it would have.

| Hmmm, what can I say about this? Its kind of hard to explain. The story is kinda simple but at the same time complex, also weird and doesn't make sense much at times. I said it's simple coz its just about having a dream and waking up being in a dream again. I can relate to this as it always happen to me whenever I sleep in the afternoon but my dreams are not as weird as that of Ataru's. I said it was complex coz the way they explain what's happening is quite hard to comprehend. Weird coz random things are thrown in one scene at times but it's understandable as they are inside a dream. It doesnt make sense coz the beginning is quite not releted to the rest. At first, their teacher was the one who noticed that something mysterious is happening then in the end he was just forgotten as if he got nothing to do with the story. Another problem is that the ending is abrupt.
At first it was like watching a mystery movie and I liked it, being isolated from the rest ofthe world is a scary thought. I got the feeling that I'm watching a different anime but as I went deeper into the story, I knew that this is definitely Urusei Yatsura, the series which is well known for its weirdness. I did enjoy it, its a bit strange but unique in its own way.
The background music and the characters are exactly the same as that of the series, maybe I shouldn't have to explain more, when it comes to animation, its a bit better.
I think it would be nice to own a dvd coz of its rewatch value. A must re-watch to understand everything. Recommended to all Urusei Yatsura fans out there.
If you want to find yourselves thinking deeply (like me) go watch this!

| This is my favorite Urusei Yatsura movie, and also one of my favorite movies of all time.
This movie is a clever mix of humor and physicologic adventure, since it plunges the colorful and loveable Urusei Yatsura cast into a strange situation invovling dreams, time, love, and reality.
The story will keep you guessing till the end and is very intelligent, and strangely it matches perfectly with the crazy UY cast.
I won't discuss the story or anything since it's too good to be spoiled!!!
The animation is wonderful for it's time, the voiceovers wonderful, the music is eerie and moody.
And all around great film that you may enjoy as a nonfan because of the great plot, but it defintely benefits from experience with the series, if you don't know the characters and their quircks you may be confused by it.

| Hands down, without a doubt, the best anime movie I have ever seen. It has everything you would want. This movie captures the same type of spirit that the Matrix tries to do, except it did it 20 years ago, and in just an hour and a half. It is not typical UY faire, bordering on a much darker and provocative theme. What is the difference between dreams and reality? In both, they seem so real as we are living them. So why escape our fantasy dreams?
Great animation, awesome direction via the genius of Mamoru Oshii (sp?), and I love the soundtrack. I bought this movie three times over, VHS, laserdisc, and DVD.
Tons of symbolism all around, forces you to think, but not enigmatic to the point where you are filled with confusion. Give this movie a chance. Ive seen alot of anime movies...this is the one (no pun intended).

| No doubt, this was one of the greatest movies from the Urusei Yatsura series. Don’t take this as a stand-alone comedy movie. Everything on this one was completely dark and enigmatic throughout the whole setting and mood; whereas having that eerie in-depth following when people should mostly notice during the whole process of the storyline. I always seemed to love these types of movies, due to the fact that it was these kinds of stories which are taken in a form of what most live Japanese horror films are highly portraying. The characters here are the same from the previous features, no real changes from their role and objective within the plot. They also are taken into a lot of drama from the conflict, mostly involved with Lum and Ataru. The animation gave itself a perfect fit to the concept. Some of the music was fairly good, while at times falling into a silence through the whole effect, making its own mark of what will or could‘ve happened. I used to see this a long time ago, around the early ‘90’s as far as I can remember. However, this will be one of those movies that resumes to have that certain impact on my part, no matter how long ago I’ve watched it. A very good recommendation, for those who are mostly interested and familiar with the older anime.

| Ah....the surreal drug trip that is the second Urusei Yatsura movie. Although not typical Urusei Yastura fare by any stretch of the imagination (it's much more somber, it's not as funny, and the characters aren't anywhere near as weird or mean-spirited as they are in the anime or manga), and the first 20 minutes just seem to drag on sometimes, it's an eerily peaceful, beautiful, amusing movie to watch. And it has great animation and music as well, considering its age.

| The second U-Y movie is no where near as good as the first one. The story in this movie makes little sense. Of course all the characters are here. Otherwise this movie is much worse then the first. If you would like to know more read the rest of my review.

| As it is written beneath me this anime should be watched at night, even if you´re watching it at 11 PM you´ll see the difference. This movie is euphemistically spoken interesting. The good ideas and parts are almost hidden for the usual unsuspecting mind.
Looking back the most astonishing thing about the movie is how Ataru masters his tasks. It´s just because of his mannerisms, if you think about it .
Watch this movie until the last second and you´re questions will be solved. Then watch it again and you will love the movie even more. (hmm, I recommend such a thing and yet I have only seen it once.... I´m a hypocrit "g" )
You will understand why the other reviewers (minus Ookers) love the movie after you´ve seen it. And Ookers, watch it again when you´ve got a bad headache (like me, and I couldn´t have done a better thing) or just have time, you will get behind the story

| This is my absolute favorite anime movie of all time. The story is fascinating and really makes you think. Get this DVD and then watch it at 2 or 3 in the morning that night, it'll leave you stunned. It's become a tradition to do it every now and then for myself and friends.

| This film is a lot worse than I thought it would be. Especially coming from people like Takahashi and Mamoru Oshi. While not terrible, it was at best average. The story was nice, but i fell asleep way too many times to keep track of things. I couldn't wait until this sleepfest was over. And thank goodness it is.

| It was a great movie. Even if Urusei Yatsura is my last favorite Rumiko Takahashi serie this one was excelent. To bad I haven't been able to get ahold of more episodes. Then I might have liked this even more.

| This is simply my favorite anime movie I've ever seen, and I've been watching anime for a decade. This movie is so good, its almost worth watching the rest of UY just for the background. UY is Rumiko Takahashi fare, so if you liked Ranma and Inu Yasha, give it a chance. Hell, even if you don't like it, at least give this one movie a chance.
The fluff aside, it is a classic telling of the worlds within worlds mindbender that most people enjoy. Most who enjoy intellectual stimulation in their movies will enjoy it to unravel the central mystery, and a certain smug sense of knowledge you can get looking in from outside the fourth wall. What makes it special, though, is that it's all done with characters from a longrunning slapstick comedy, which adds an incredible degree of depth compared to similar works, odd as it seems. Any seriousness from the characters, indeed, is a sign of their mental breakdown. I think it would be an enjoyable watch without the background, but familiarity with the source material is downright essential for proper impact. It achieves its lasting power through contrast, much like Frank Miller's Dark Knight and the Kimagre Orange Road Movie.
I have also never seen Grave of the Fireflies (I'm saving my copy for viewing pleasure after the next World War), so for those of you who disagree with this being the bestest anime movie of all time on the basis of that anime...beee-dah!.
