This was one of those starter animes for me. It wasn’t the first one I watched but it was one of the first. I really enjoyed this mostly because Allen looks a lot like David Bowie from the labyrinth. I had my laughs at this one too. The battle scenes were pretty cool, but nothing to fantasy since it was rather old, and when the love story starts to pick up, I found it really easy to insert my own little lines into the story to make it funnier. It’s an easy watch, and very pleasing to the chick factor. The love story in this anime isn't to engulfing of the actual story line but it does take place non the less, but it was a really easy watch and i enjoyed quite a lot.

I love this anime! It has romance in it, but it isn't the main center piece. I personally don't like animes with romance in it, but this one changed my mind.

For an anime that had a solid story and great writing, I just never found myself liking this series as much as I could have. Technically its brilliant, and I've tried to score it as such, but its not on my list for regular viewing.

Vision of Escaflowne is wonderful but not without its faults. Looking past them one can see a wonderful anime full of mystery and love. If you can't look past them, than this anime no matter the outcome you won't enjoy. Like new shoes with scuff marks, so is Escaflowne.

Ah, Escaflowne, the archetype of which so many modern anime base themselves. A beautiful conglomerate of successes and failures that set a precedent for all it's successors to try to oust. It speak volumes that, despite the huge leaps and bounds in anime production since its creation, Escaflowne is still one of the best.

For a 1996 production the animation is outstanding. Though it lacks the coloration depth and shading we've come to expect as standard, it possesses incredible detail, finesse, and style. The guymelef designs look fabulous and their battles are drawn with surprising smoothness. The character designs leave room for improvement, but hey, if they didn't have big noses it just wouldn't be Escaflowne.

In addition, Escaflowne possesses an amazing soundtrack. Dance of Curse has been one of my favorite musical scores for many years now and it never loses it's luster. The Seiyuu is also outstanding at bringing the characters to life. I could have settled for a few less "Van-sama!!!"'s, but I've heard MUCH worse. Tokyo Underground with it's "RURI!!!"'s comes to mind.

Escaflowne's story was by far it's weakest point. But hey, at the time, it hadn't yet become a total cliche. In fact, the story became a cliche simply because it's been copied so much. Escaflowne tells the tale of Van and Hitomi fighting to end all fighting on Gaea...and does it well. It's enjoyable to watch things unfold. Escaflowne melds romance and action together very nicely, creating a flow that appeals to just about everyone. Being the first anime I ever watched, it's a fantastic introduction into the anime world; it's truly an experience.

I've not much to say about the characters, actually. Van and Hitomi are both characters you won't forget and both are flanked by a great caste of side characters. It's funny that, even after having not seen Escaflowne in about five or six years, I still remembered the characters plain as day when I finally got around to rewatching it today.

All in all, I really don't have all that much to say. Escaflowne, while it has its faults, is the true definition of a classic. Its greatness has stood the test of time for the past decade and will continue to do so for many more to come.

Highly recommended.

This is one outstanding anime before 2000. 3 anime's which you need to watch are this, cowboy bebop and Evangilon and I can say this is the best. The plot is simple but the way its done is quite good. Think of it as the original Luna The silver star stories complete game simple plot and how simple can be great.

A mysterious race of Atlantis has lived thousands of years in the past and disappeared without a trace. Where did they disappear to? The Vision of Escaflowne has its own answer, from harboring divine power they predicted that the world is going to be destroyed by it. So in turn they've created an alternate world with their science - Gaea. Unfortunately, even though they managed to perserve the world, the race of Atlantis became nearly extinct. Only very few of them still remain. The most obvious trait which distinguishes them from other people is huge white wings. In the planet of earth they are known as angels, in the planet of Gaea as harborers of misfortune. The ultimate creation of the Atlantis was the machine, which could control the fate. But can fate really be controlled? After thousands of years of Atlantis extinction a scientist, who is most likely Isaac Newton decides to follow the footsteps of the angel like race and create a machine of fate, which would free the world from war, anger and fear. The closest way to the Atlantis is in Gaea, so Isaac, thanks to a strong will and a spite of fortune finds himself there.

Yet the main character of the show is neither Atlantics nor sir Newton. It's a japanese girl from the modern times, who fell in the world of Gaea thanks to her mystic pendant's power. A girl who can predict the future meets the king Van Fanel and sets to a journey to uncover the truth behind Atlantis and the empire of Zaibach controled by none other than the sir Newton. So the tale of war, pain and suffering begins, a tale of forbidden science, a tale of the strenght of human emotions and love.

Even though I did love the idea of the show, the beginning was kind of slow, and until I've learned about Zaibach's emperor, I was a little bit bored by it. Had I known the main idea behind the show from the very first episode, I'd have enjoyed it a lot more. Since I thought this show is going to be a romantic adventure story in a fantasy setting, I had discarded any more complex symbolism, linking to history, myths or science. Yet after I've learned about both Zaibach and Atlantis the whole perespective of the show has changed. Anyway, I can't stress enough - don't make the same mystake as me, pay a huge attention to the show from the very beginning. This anime, like Rurouni Kenshin: Reminiscence is not only about love, it has its own philosophy and ideology. This is one of such shows that you have to put effort into to enjoy it. Definitely not a care-free watch.

If you want to effortlessly enjoy a show, simply by sitting next to your computer screen, without using your head much, then this show is definitely not for you. If you like using your knowledge, or even learning new knowledge from the show, then this is definitely for you. Since this is mecha, mecha fans shouldn't discard this as well. I myself don't like mecha that much, but it seems I'm starting to enjoy this genre from something else rather than the robot fights. Oh, and it's the first time I see a shoujo mecha, a really weird idea of genres if you'd ask me.

My absolute favorite anime of all time. The only flaw for me was the ending. For those of you who haven't watched this anime, if you like mecha/romance/action anime, you'll love Escaflowne. Oh also, love triangles galore.

I must have watched this anime at least 12 or more times and I can't say I ever get bored with it ^__^
I won't deny my main reason for loving every minute of this anime is Van Fanel and with all the other wonderful elements this anime gives the viewer, it should be a must watch!

Decent series with sci-fi, robots, romance, characters, many planets. Ultimately I'm not sure if I felt satisfied. It's a short manga and series, complete in itself. I still prefer romance of the comic variety a la Love Hina. This was one of the few serious cartoons I've watched. I plan to go back to lighthearted series again, as I just find them more enjoyable. It's a high quality series though, not shoddily done in the least.

Edit: In retrospect this series is solid. Well worth watching. As much as I do like comedies and LH and compare everything to it, this is a totally different kind of toon and should be judged on its own merits.

When I watched the first episode (actually I lie, I only watched the first 10 minutes) I became seriously bored - maybe I shouldve read the blurb or something. But I left the thing on - and on - and after about 3 episodes I was hooked, and I didnt even know why.

This has been one of the only "robot" anime's that I've enjoyed, you find out heaps about the characters, and in a good time frame. Nothing seemed like it was being dragged out, the story line was always engaging. I loved most of the characters, although for some strange reason I didn't like Hitomi - however, I liked this Hitomi much better than the one created by Katsu Aki (mangaka). I was very suprised with some of the pairings of characters later on, but at least it keeps you on your toes.

The animation wasnt too good to start off with, but it got better towards the end.

My only confusion was with the mad scientist... I thought that he started out with a good purpose, but in the end it was so... strange...

But no matter. I enjoyed this to no end.

Out of all the animes I watched, this is the most unique, because it contains mecha. I never watched mecha anime a before except fot this one, and now I'm still reluctant to watch another because I think no other anime in that same genre will beat this. As you can see in my top favorites, I'm a sucker for comedy animes, and this is the only serious anime that I enjoyed watching all the way through.

Hitomi Kanzaki is a 16 year old high school student who is an aspiring athlete. One day, while she's practicing, a boy in strange oufit appeared out of nowhere, this is Van Fanel, he's from another planet called Gaea. After he defeated the dragon, both of them were transported into that planet. Now, Hitomi faces being a some kind of savior, but she must endure emotional hardships before she can come home to Earth.

Since Vision of Escaflowne is one of the finest "fantasy" anime, I ought to watch it. As a fantasy novels reader, I couldn't have helped it.

Though it was an anime I enjoyed (thanks to the great music), I was quite disappointed with the story. I was also quite disappointed with the lack of originality of Atlantis (and the use of Levistones) which looks like a lot of Atlantis in Laputa. I should not have forgotten that Escaflowne is mainly a romance taking place in a fantasy world.

There's something for everyone in Escaflowne. For the guys, there's swords, dragons, and gigantic robots kicking the crap out of each other. For the girls, there's love triangles, angels, and a strong female lead. For both, there are boring characters and a dreary story wherein Isaac Newton is trying to destroy another world. Seriously.

Great mix of fantasy, mecha, romance and sci-fi. Escaflowne is a great anime that has flaws which im not going to spoil, but well nothing is perfect. The idea doesnt seem that original but the storyline is fantastic, as you watch more you get yourself hooked up.

The animation is probably the main flaw of Escaflowne, been from 1996 isnt an excuse, there are better animations from 1995-1996. The character design was what I hate the most, the big pointy noses the characters had wasnt the best idea ever. The backgrounds were poor too, the only thing that saves the animation are the guymelef fights and action scenes.

The soundtrack really makes for the animation, the opening is great and so is the opening. Maaya Sakamoto does it again. The variety of background tunes used along the series fit perfectly well to the mood of the story .

Not the most original idea but a great storyline. They mixed fantasy , romance, action, mecha in such a way that doesnt leave anything at the air. It can satasfiy romance, mecha, adventure lovers. Like a lot of animes the story starts simple and then it gets complicated, but at the end they explain almost everything. The story moves fast and there arent any fillers.

Character development is great, almost every character has its background and personality developed. Van and Folken are the best characters in Escaflowne. Even though Hitomi is the main character is the one I hated the most, she was just so shallow and she wanted everything her way, thinking she was the center of the world and she could make everyone happy, and to make it worst she was like that all the series. At least Van and Allen changed along the series and thats what matters.

Escaflowne is an anime that can satisfy mecha, romance, adventure and fantasy fans. I reccomend it to any of the above or anyone who is willing to start as anime viewer this is a perfect choice to begin with.

Escaflowne is an excellent anime. It combines sci-fi with fantasy and "girl transported to another world". Somehow in a strange way, it works. The good points were the magnetic storyline (with unique ideas) and the strong characters. Few other anime come close here.

However, the low points were the animation - many reused cells, the battle scenes could have been done better. In some places this really made me "grin and bear it". In an indeal world, some of the characters could be better developed (if compared to 12 Kokuki or Berserk), some secondary characters enter/exit too quickly without enough background to fill out the story.

With that said, the uniqueness and story create a vortex that draws in the viewers. This makes it a top rate anime.

I hadnt the fortune of watching this when it was popular some years ago. But I dont regret that I watched the series now since it has something special that I havent felt since I watched the animated movie ''Flight of the Dragons''. Since I like Fantasy animes this makes quite an impression overall. There's also the manga as an alternative that has totally different outcome and different characters (notably Hitomi in the manga is much better developed). As for the movie, watch it just for a visual enhancement of the series and nothing more.

I must admit, what started off as a generic mecha series turned into a rather interesting anime that got me hooked until the very end. Lately, all the good mecha shows I've watched started out as an average mecha vs. mecha/monster show, then ended up carrying a deep storyline with so many twists and turns with deep moral messages. Our protagonist Hitomi randomly envisions images of the future that are quite accurate. There's one vision where she pictures a world that is ruled by giant robots and flying fortresses. Moments later, a knight named Van, who was in the process of completing his ritual of dragon slaying, magically found his way to earth, along with the dragon. Before it happened, Hitomi predicted Van's death, which prevented it from ever happening. The same blue pillar of light that transported Van to earth had transported both Hitomi and Van to his world of Gaea. When they both arrive at Van's castle, the Zaibach Empire had burned it down, scattering all of Fanelia around the world. Now, Hitomi, Van and another knight named Allen are chasing down the empire in order to stop them from grasping Atlantis's secret weapon.

Like most animes, Escaflowne takes a while to get real interesting. In the beginning, you try so hard not to loose interest, but sometimes you do, and you find it a chore watching each episode as you advance with the series. What does redeem the first half of Escaflowne is the fighting. The battle performance of the guymelef (the name given to the mechas) reflects on the swordsmanship of its user, which makes Escaflowne one of the most exciting mecha series in terms of fights. I mean, how exciting is it to see mechas use swords over guns? The story is so original, and it's quite cleverly plotted. It mainly revolves around destiny, fate, and changing them both to your will. There's also a message of life theme that is tapped onto the final episode. Basically, it tells you that you have to look deep into both situations to see which is truly more moral, and not join one side in an instance because you were rooted with it.

What's also quite interesting in this series is the setting. It's set in Gaea, which resembles a post 1700 era, so you can surely expect many medieval related things, such as western castles, knight’s honour, princesses, royal clothing, etc. What's even more appealing is the guymelefs themselves. Unlike in Evangelion and Gundam, the mechas here are about the size of a four-story building, which I prefer more. The only thing about Escaflowne's setting that bothers me is its location in the universe. The earth and moon can be seen as we see the moon from the earth. Though if the earth can be seen from Gaea in that distance, wouldn't the powerhouse nations occupy it? (It's modern times in earth, so it makes sense). And shouldn't Hitomi and everyone else on the earth be able to see Gaea as well? But oh well, just a minor setback that shouldn't really be worked up as much.

Besides the minor scientifically inaccurate distancing of planets, the only other major problem I had with Escaflowne was its character design. The mechas are crisp and wonderfully animated, and the backgrounds are quite beautiful, but the noses! They're so pointy! Maybe I should just single it out to just the noses, because they're truly bothersome. Over the course of the show, you'll adapt to the awkward noses, because the main cast is very memorable. Van is a distinct character who appears to share the same badass attitude of Inuyasha, but soon realizes from his brother, who's working for Zaibach, that it's his anger and fury that's evil, and not his enemies. Folken, Van's evil brother, is a man that shows no emotion in his face, but truly cares for those who works for him, as well as those who are against him. Dilandau, the leader of the dragonslaying group hunting down Van and Escaflowne (Van's guymelef) throughout the show, is a sensitive, yet aggressive leader that has a dark past even secret to him. Allen isn't quite unique compared to other supporting characters of his style, but comes in handy later on with the many family relations that twist his mind, which opens up for some twisting and turning.

Besides the show's plot, the music and sounds are quite awe-inspiring, and second only to the show's story when you categorize Escaflowne's best points. The battle theme combines orchestrated music with vocals, which makes the fighting more epic, and the journey more daring. Escaflowne isn't like many other animes in its genre. Don't be fooled by the character's pointy noses, because this is a quality show just waiting to be seen!
