| It's a genre that has been tried before - but this one is good, no scratch that, GREAT. It combines fantasy, angels, demons, princesses, princes, music, and magic all into a 25 episode anime. Everything gets explained in this story and the first episode will hook you. Even though the animation is really bad, somehow it kind of fits this anime after you watch it a while. Hameln and Flute are the main characters, but we also get to see an in-depth view of the side characters. The genre that this falls under is fantasy, love-romance, and drama.
The best part of this anime is the story, music, and the characters. Like I stated above, everything gets explained in the end. However, the only complaint I have about this is that some parts feel rushed, to be explained, like Queen Horn's son. The better aspect of this anime is also how reality-based it is. I know, oxymoron, seeing as this anime is fantasy. But the way the characters react to the situation reflects personal depth and a realistic feature. In the end, each character has had at least some growth and we get to see the stories behind all of them. Music also plays a big part in this. Although the animation is usually just standstill, the classical music helps to move the show along and fits perfectly with the fighting. (Classical and fighting, who knew?) Some of the characters you will learn to love, hate, or both, fluctuating. And that's when you know that you like this anime because it got a reaction out of you.
The basic summary of this anime is (without revealing anything): Hameln and Flute are friends who go on a journey to find who they truly are when Flute was told that she was a princess. Along the way, they find friends and meet old ones and discover where they're from. In the process, Flute and Hameln grow closer together... always there for each other no matter what the other finds out about themselves.
Ignore the bad animation (who knows, you might even get to like it) and you have an anime that features what most animes today try to do (mesh a bunch of different aspects into one anime). But this one does it right.

| You know how sometimes you just NEED to research a particular anime? well I felt that way about VoH. I try not to compare anime to manga if I can help it, but sometimes you need to look into the manga origins for the sake of the anime!
The one thing I was surprised about, is no one else has seen the connection to "The Pied Piper of Hamelin" - the tale of the ratcatcher who used his magical flute to drive away the rats infesting the town of Hamelin in Germany in the 13th century. When the villagers refused to pay him, he stole away their children. Now I know there is little or no reference to any of this in the anime, but if you delve a little into the origins of the original manga, you will find that Hamel did indeed use his magic violin (rather than a flute) to destroy demons and when he wasn't paid, he took Flute (the girl in the story) as payment. So now you can see the connection between the two ^__^
I was quite satisfied with my theory of the Pied Piper influencing this anime after that and when you see the medieval looking settings for the entire anime, you can also see how a 13th century Germany also influenced the original creation.
There is also a reference to Greek mythology in the story with the inclusion of Pandora's box. The box that contained all the evil in the world and of course when she opened it, all hell befell the earth. (This of course is the most common told version, there are many others, but they would detract from this particular story!!).
***
Violinist of Hamelin is an anime I have avoided for around 6/7 years because I'd heard nothing but bad things about it - good music, diabolical animation. Everywhere I looked, all anyone complained about was the animation, that it was all still shots and more like a storyboard, so I didn't watch it. You may be wondering why then did I suddenly decide to try this anime out? The answer to that is easy; I'm sick of mediocre samey anime that seems to have drowned out the world of anime at the moment. Where ever you look it's the same cutesy drivel and although I don't mind a little cutesy drivel every now and then, too much definitely turns your brains to mush *lol*
I turned to one of the only mid-90's titles I hadn't seen and thought, if it's that bad I can always stop. I couldn't believe what a wonderful anime this turned out to be. It had a very dark and oft times oppressive storyline, wonderful characters, beautiful classical music (Swan Lake, The Nutcracker etc) and one of the most emotional endings I have seen in a long time.
For the love of all that's good in this world, overlook any shortcomings in the animation quality of this anime and watch it!!

| In order to enjoy this anime, one really has to feel awake, active, and imaginative. Violinist of Hamelin has a story that one really can get involved in, but the animation is so poor that it is really easy to distance oneself from the events happening on screen. On screen events and movements are minimal and there are extreme usages of still shots and panning. In other words, this feels like a soundtracked storybook. It is not something so easily passively enjoyed.
Horrible animation aside, Violinist of Hamelin has all the successful elements of a fantasy journey anime. Plenty of demons, magical powers, mythical legends, princesses, medieval towns, etc. However, to make things more intense we have a main character that we know from the start that did something extremely evil in the past and is on the path to reliving the past. However, how will things be different this time? Will the humans be saved from the demons or will the demons rule the world this time?
Despite the numerous countries and towns that are destroyed, this anime focuses less on battles and more on character interactions and character development. Everyone in this anime has some sort of inability or horrible past that is topic of each episode. Everyone is suffering from something and therefore a lot of dialogue in this anime. This is one of those typical series where all the background story is only used to enhance the character pain and growth.
Overall, I feel the age of this anime can turn off a lot of people. Furthermore, this anime does not offer much in terms of originality or the whole modern age drama that seem to be common in animes these days. There are a lot of interesting story elements for those who like demons vs human battles and out of those fantasy medieval related animes out there, this is one of the better ones. Personally, I was not so interested in this anime that much because of the age. I was definitely intrigued by how Hamel would change the fate of the world. (This aspect really reminded me of X TV where the future basically hangs on one central character). If you do not mind a little outdated animation style and love fantasy stories, Violinist of Hamelin will definitely be for you. Not to mention, the music that Hamelin and his friends plays are quite emotional. A bit corny in terms of action scenes as well dialogue-drama at times, but overall pretty enjoyable.

| (ep. 1-12 Instrumentality Project fansub -thanks to DVD Subber programm- the best available fansub for VoH, the rest based on the crappy HK bootleg translation. But the DVD music quality makes up for it)
I modified this review since now after reading the manga up to the point where the anime ends (volume 11) . The manga consists of 37 volumes so the anime covers 1/3 of the manga.

| Great series really. The animation is good but there are too many still scenes. The soundtrack is absolutely wonderful - classic music fits the dramatic story perfectly. The characters are well-made, but sometimes sound really annoying.
Imho this is a great anime, espessially for those who love drama and classic music.

| (I watched all the episodes)
Violinist of Hameln is about a war beetween humans and demons.
The first thing that strikes you about this anime is the animation. It is very bad indeed. It seems you are watching a manga with color and voices. The motion is very limited. I guess they had a very limited budget.
However it didn't bother me that much. I actually READ mangas so I easily bear with it. Then the animation improves
in the last episodes. Anyway I like the character design.
The music is wonderful. I refer to the magic music. In this anime, music is used during fights, in fact there is a
character who is a violinist (Hameln) and a pianist (Raiel, Hameln's friend). So they play their instruments and that can affect the battle in various ways (it depends on the song they play). The best thing is that they play some of the most beautiful classical compositions (Beethoven, Mozart,...).
If you have read the manga, soon you realize how this anime is different. While the manga is hilarious (at least the first volumes, that is the ones I read), this anime is very serious and dramatic.
The story is very good. Not only there a lot of original thoughts, but the flow of the events is fast and you never get bored. Often something new and unespected happens.
Not all the characters are memorable but some of the main ones are just great (Hameln, Raiel, Saizer).
Summing up, despite its awful animation, I enjoyed this anime a lot, because of the story, the dramatic atmosphere and its wonderful magic music. If you think animation is the most important thing, skip this one though.

| Violinist of Hamelin is an anime where my feelings are mixed. I have a bias towards classical music, so I loved the music. On the other hand, the show was on a terribly low budget so it's less than half animated.
However, Violinist of Hamelin sports a very intriguing story, filled with creative, and heartfilled characters. Unlike its manga counterpart, the Violinist of Hamelin TV series is dark, depressing, filled with angst. I had trouble enjoying the anime because of how depressing it was, and how much it dragged. The slideshow of an animation definitely did not help. The ending was decent IMO, as it was rather bittersweet but it gave a sense of "the end."
Comparing with the manga, I was sad that they strayed from the manga so much (I mean it is supposed to be comedy instead of angst, just look at the cello sized violin), but in its own way, the TV series did portray a dark and fascinating story from a manga that is 80% humor.
Overall, VoH probably won't sit well with a lot of people because of pacing, lack of animation, and the amount of angst it contains, but if agnst is your thing, then Violinst of Hamelin won't disappoint. Otherwise, read the manga, as it will have you rofl.

| I really loved this anime and its probably one of my top 5 favorites now. The story is exellent, you can really tell that it was planned smoothly from beginning to end. It surpriced me that though due to low budget stills and animation this is one of the best show that i have seen in a while. Now in days it seems like all animes are produced with a bug budgets but what The Violinist of Hameln lacks in animation others animes lack in story development. The music was well mixed into the story wich enhanced the mood. The characters were well thought of and well developed. I personally liked Hameln's character because he always have a gloomy feeling around him. This is clearly a tragic story and although many didnt like the tragic ending, i personaly liked it and thought it was well suited for the story because not every ending can be a happy one(though i feel sad for Hameln wich was my favorite character).

| disappointed at the quality level of the animation. Feels like I'm watching a powerpoint presentation.
great ost. very interesting how the producers worked in well known symphonies to fit the mood and tone.
original and imaginative story full of drama and plot twists.
almost all the characters you mean face problems/dilemnas and try to work through them
explores both dark and happy aspects of human emotions. although set in a fantastical world, very credible emotions.
i enjoyed reading the story from the anime. I really wish the studio put more effort into the animation. thats the only thing i felt was holding this series back from being one of the best.

| As one might expect, this music themed anime has great music, and all the music is well choregraphed as well with scenes where the music will abruptly stop setting an incredible tensity that the scene would other wise be missing for example. The animation was mediocre at best suffering mainly from too many stills and too many scenes with poor lighting, but didn't really detract from the series. The story was at times cheesy but was deep enough and had enough plot twists to keep my interest. Most of the characters were very interesting and fairly deep. This series may not be the best ever written but if you give it a chance it will probably be worth your while, it was for me.

| this was good, not as good as berserk but wit a similar style of anim.
the anim. was really poor i have to say, to anyone who has seen this, its a little like a powerpoint presentation of the manga version: with far too many still and not many actual animation.
but the story was v gd, character a little lacking but still very good, sound well i didnt really notice but it was mainly classical background music which was nice.
i really enjoyed this, it has a very deep plot too

| A decent anime. The title should be The Violinist Hameluun, as that is his name, and he plays the Violin :p
A lower-budget production, lack of .. money? ends up hurting this anime in many places. Still, I enjoyed it for the most part, though it came so close to really enveloping me in its world...

| I will say that there is no anime I've seen with worse animation than VoH. But in it's defense, the story hooked me sufficiently to make me dig around on the net and find the manga (which is my absolute favorite!!)
Overall, I really think it's worth checking out, if only for the unorthodox "super hero musician" subject matter.

| animation reeked. great story tho.
reviewers should not give spoilers! ugh...
the story is involved but fairly simple and almost predictable. this is a good twist to the usual "person's journey to find oneself" type of plot in that it the traveler (hamelin) tries to discover himself by siding w/ the bad guys.
anime series w/ similar *characters* are vandread and naruto. the main characters in all three of these anime try to discover themselves and go through changes that most of us can relate to.
violinist of hamelin could've been a pretty good videogame =D
cons: one spoiler can pretty much ruin the whole series.
be careful when reading through the reviews ^^

| To me, Hamelin seems a direct contrast to alot of today's typical anime. Today, with the advent of CG and the mass-production/marketing of anime alot of series turn out to be pretty to look at, but lacking substance. Hamelin on the other hand won't win any awards for groundbreaking cinematography or animation techniques, but its plot, story and characters are top-notch.
Personally, as I regard story to be more important than any other factor of an anime, the virtually still-screen animation of Hamelin didn't take too much away from its epic fantasy tale. The artwork itself isn't half bad, the applications of all the various classical pieces in the story quite ingenious. Personally, I would prefer an anime like Hamelin anytime over some of the cheap eye candy they release these days. Then again, that's just me.

| This anime has an interest and very well done story with great characters, it gives off a rather epic atmosphere yet has a feeling all it's own. The only downfall is the animation which is a bit scarce, but I think that can be accounted for considering the age of the series. I personally like the use really well drawn still pictures, it almost feels like someone is reading you a book. I would recommend this anime to anyone who likes a good story and amazing music.

| A dark, medieval story based on a gag-manga, is that possible?
No, of course not.
But somehow, Violinist of Hamelin made it, and i am impressed.
As you start watching the series you get confused by the odd references to classical music, chritianity and legends. But after a while, about two or three episodes into the series, you'll start to see the pattern.
This is an good anime, that could have been even better if they had made it darker and more morbid.
I like it dark.

| violinist of hamlen is an odd little series. it also happens to be a big favorite of mine.
DON'T bash this series because of the animation, or rather the lack there of. give it a chance and i'm pretty sure you will fall in love with it.
this show is SERIOUS! unlike the manga and movie, which are silly. i'm not sure why the creators took a dramatic approach with the TV series, but i'm glad they did.
most likely this show will move you to tears are some point. it's such a beautiful story, and the characters are VERY lovable.
please keep in mind the creators didn't have a big budget, so they opted to use "dramatic stillshots" instead of fluid animation. there is SOME animation though, and it is very well done. the character designs are super!
the music is a big part of the story, as many of the characters fight with musical instruments, and it is excellent. this show has some of the best BGM i have ever heard in a series. the OP and ED are very catchy, and enjoyable.
i heard that hamlen may be liscenced! this is great news (and about freaking time). i highly recommend people check it out, especially if you are a fan of fantasy and dramatic/dark anime.

| Incredibly creative, inventive, well written tale... with a low cel count.
Honestly, this series did move me and intrigued me from beginning to end. With the medieval setting and magical music, this series weaves a story of mystery around the viewer. Although the low cel count is in there due a poor budget, I still enjoyed this one.
It is a dark, dramatic series, but there are those brief points where a comical moment shows up to make it not so dreary, and it the effects they have are well placed.
