The anime had a good overall story but the characters were different. They were different in the sense of women and men think that they are different. Men think women will eat them up because they are monsters and women think that men are aliens. When the main story takes place throughtout the series there are sexual tensions. The thing that I somewhat couldn't get over was that all of the battles were done by CG. Then they would go back to the regular anime style. It was something that was very different.

I am very impressed with the integration of animation and CG present in Vandread. It makes for a beautifully crafted work with smooth and seamless interaction between the two mediums. Apart from that, the story (with a decidedly humorous nature) proves to be intriguing and compelling. I found myself continuing on because I just had to know what was going to happen.

After managing to get the OOP box set for £26, I started watching my Vandread DVD's a few days ago.

After watching the first season, while happy with the quality of the series for what I paid, the shallowness of Vandread makes me happy I didn't pay a huge amount for it.

Plot: 7/10

Women are an alien species: We men know this much already. Vandread takes what we know a step further, really making men and women aliens by putting them on different planets.

At the start of the series, the men of Taraak and women of Mejere were about to start a war. The men got fed up of a group of women space pirates and decided to put a stop to them, unleashing a new battleship against them. However, much to the dismay of the men, the launch of the battleship went badly, the women space pirates stealing the ship.

During all this, a young 3rd class worker, Hibiki, decided to sneak onto the battleship to steal a Vanguard (male mecha) part, ending up getting stuck on board when it launched. He soon found himself thrown in the brig by the men, just before the women attack.

After the women took over the ship, the men decided to destroy it rather than let the women have it by firing missiles at the ship. This resulted in the ship *somehow* blocking the missiles and getting sent to a distant part of the galaxy. The men and women on board the battleship then had to start working together since they soon discovered a new alien race that wants to "harvest" humans...

----

The plot did have a lot of potential. If taken seriously, a plot involving a war of the sexes could have been amazing... If turned into a comedy, it had the potential to be insanely funny. Sadly, however, Vandread turned out to be light-hearted, shallow and not very funny.

The plot does not develop much at all once the Nirvana (the battleship mentioned previously) gets warped to a distant part of the galaxy. The crew face battles against their new alien enemy, known only as "harvesters", go down to the mostly deserted planets they pass for supplies, fight with each other, play with each other... Episodic stuff.

It's really quite disappointing that the series was taken in such a light-hearted direction when it would've worked much better as a more adult series.

Characters: 8/10

The characters, while not exactly being deep or unique, saved the show from being bad.

The main character of Vandread is Hibiki, a young male who wants to prove himself. He's simple minded, direct, bad tempered... The type of lead you see in shounen series on a regular basis. Truth be told, he isn't very interesting, with no background details revealed outside of him being a 3rd class citizen; no depth.

Dita, the female lead, was much more likeable. She insists on calling Hibiki "Mr. Alien", following him around everywhere due to being curious about the male gender and generally annoying the hell out of Hibiki. She was the most funny character in the first season and by far my favourite, if only for being a redhead.

The other 2 female main characters, Jura and Meia, were less interesting. Jura is your stereotypical flirtatious woman and Meia is your stereotypical military type, hiding her emotions and commanding the others in battle. Meia has had the most development (not that that's saying much...) so far since her past has been revealed, but the sequence about her past wasn't designed very well and had little to no impact on me.

The other 3 characters found interesting are male: Bart, a wimpy guy who ended up steering the ship since only a male can, the male doctor Duero and Rabat, a Han Solo type. Rabat will hopefully get fleshed out in the 2nd series, him being one of the few intriguing characters.

Art/Animation: 9/10

For a show that aired back in 2000, Vandread most certainly looks impressive. It was a rather nice surprise to discover that the the DVD's are in widescreen format.

There was no obvious corner cutting on the art and animation side during the first season; everything looked smooth and nice to look at. The colours made everything look bright and eye catching.

CG is used for all of the space battles in Vandread. I'm sure it looked amazing back when Vandread originally aired, but the CG sections haven't survived the test of time and didn't impress. I didn't really like the speed the CG battles went at since I found it hard to follow what was going on a lot of time... I suppose the idea was to make the CG battles as fast as possible in order to impress more.

Overall, Vandread looks excellent for its age.

Sound: 5/10

The soundtrack was more distracting than anything. The person who created the soundtrack deserves to be shot... That's all there is to say really.

The OP/ED were pretty good. Nothing too memorable but the themes made watching the OP/ED animation more enjoyable.

As ever with Japanese voice acting, the performances were mostly excellent. There was no noticeable bad performances.

Total: 7.25/10

Enjoyable yet disappointing, Vandread is a great show to watch to pass time. Don't watch it if you're looking for a Death Note beater.

Honestly I had been expecting more out of Vandread. For all of the genres applied to it it turned out to really be a slapstick, mecha action series.

You can tell the writers worked hard on this series because they managed to keep the overall plot out of the show until the last two episodes of the first season.

So, if you're looking for mecha fights in space with lots of explosions this is the show for you.

It should be noted, however, that the second season redeems the whole series in the areas found lacking.

Vandread was one of the first completed animes i had ever watched. & I decided to watch it again to see if it was as good as I once thought it was. & Of course, since it was one of the first animes i had ever watched, i thought it was one of the best animes around. After rewatching it, i realised it wasn't the "best" as i thought it was, but it was StiLL a Very Worthy Watch... =)

Firstly, the animation. For an anime produced in 2000, I have to say that the animation Is REALLY GOOD even though it's not as great if you compare it with the latest animation. But STILL, It's Definitely worth of praise, the 3D & CG animation is GREAT, & the Character Designs were Great Too. The Designs of the Mecha was REALLY COOL TOO~! There was a Balance between CooL 3D Mecha Animation & Wacky Daily-Life Faces. x) So the Animation is Definitely Worth of Praise for a 2000 anime. =)
*However, the animation for Episode 2 was done poorly, so mmm, that tones the overall quality of Vandread down a bit. =(

Sounds? Well, I Really Liked the Opening Theme. =) & The Ending theme was pretty good Too. Seiyuus did a Great Job, & I have no Complaints. x)

Storyline is Pretty Well done. A time in the future when Men & Women are Enemies, this same storyline has probably been used over and over again, but Vandread manipulates it to become a Mecha Anime, and goes into the life of a young man, Hibiki who has never felt any happiness or meaningful things in his life. What was pretty funny was the fact that, the "media" had influenced the Males to think that Females have eaten the guts and innards of their ancestors?! & the males in this time period ACTUALLY BELIEVED IT~?!

They Never even Knew how life of their ancestors were. When Men & Women lived under the same roof and actually produced babies together, NOT In a Factory. =_=""" But Well, this storyline was kind of unbelievable, but the way the creators had explained it in Vandread, made it seemed really believable that this was really how things were in the future. =O

Anyways, the story is about Hibiki and 2 other males being caught by these Female Pirates, who take over this ship and call it "Nirvana". The 3 guys are helpful and useful to the female crew, one being a navigator, one being a doctor, and Hibiki, who has never controlled a mech before, is a fighter for this crew of females. & The Powers of his Mech, called a Vanguard Enhances A WHOLE LOT when he combines with one of the "Dread"s of the females. & Becomes a Powerful, Super CooL Looking Vandread~!

As the crew of the Nirvana is travelling back to the home planet of the females, they meet different people and many enemies, and have celebrations on the ship. Just like Everyday Happy-go-Lucky life when anything would just happen, & every episode is filled with those "temporary crisis".

There were Many Characters introduced in the first episode, & a number of them are developed while some aren't because of the limited amount of screentime. what can 13 Episodes Do? It wouldn't have hurt to have 24/26 episodes. <_< Anyway, Hibiki's character was developed the most. He used to be a man who didn't couldn't decide whether he wanted to live or not, & he has been developed into a person who Knows what he wants and won't let someone decide his future for him. Dita's character too Was explored, her cheerfulness & Enthusiasm for the "Alien" she had always wanted to meet since she was young.

Well, there were a number of characters who were developed, but the rest weren't. & i was a bit unsatisfied that some of the characters weren't developed enough. =( But it wasn't all thaaat bad anyway. But Vandread did take the time to let the characters show their qualities and flaws, & I have to praise Vandread for that. =)

There were a Couple of Episodes that made me shed a tear, & i don't know whether i'm being bias-ed because i thought this was one of the "best" animes before. But still, Vandread is Still a Great Anime Anyway.

The CooL Mechas, & Great CG Action. x) There was Also some Great Comedy. =P

Overall, Vandread isn't one of the Best animes out there, But it's Still Pretty Good. =) The Last few episodes didn't exactly have one of the biggest climax-es around, but They ended the First season very nicely, showing that there will be a plot for the second season, if you weren't satisfied with the first. x) So yeah, there IS a second season, So I Look forward to More Excitement & Character Development in that season. =)

i normally agree with the ranking on ainmenfo but vandread is really a pain to watch. i started watching it now for the second time but i just cant get myself to finish it.
first criticism is the transparent story. women and men hate each other but there is one special boy who changes that opinion at least a bit. wow what a surprise!!! then there are about 20 characters introduced in the first episode with a very confusing plot, many explosions where only the unimportant supernumaries die and a heavy dose stupid men. the strong part about the story is that it is fast paced and there is hardly and time to breath. but still it didnt get me involved at all and i dont quite know why there is a second season and so on. but i dont have to share everyones taste.

the animation was quite well done with fluid movements and nice fighting scenes. the character design is not really the style i like but it was no downer.
i cant rate the sound because i downloaded the 13 eps without op and ed.

what honestly surprised me was the heavy thinking of the main character about his life and things. at this moment i thought that vandread is heading the right way but they somehow took the wrong direction again.

overall i have the impression that vandread is overrated and should be seen more critic . it lack a decent plot and a deep look at all of the characters.

This anime is pretty dang good in my opinion. Its the old space suit story with a new twist. I recommend it to anyone who likes some fighting action mixed with a small amount of romantic action...lemme rephrase that...a very small amount. This is where i have to bash it...the romance between the characters developes a little to slowly for my taste, but with the circumstances of the story, its understandable.

I was watching this anime on youtube and almost died when I found out that the second season episodes werent loaded up, so i downloaded the second season and loaded them up myself hehe. Look for Hotaru1985 on youtube if you want to watch the second season, Darkdragonsblood has the first.

P.s. I'll be uploading more anime that isnt uploaded on youtube before in the next few months, check my profile on youtube for updates. =)

This is the first anime I EVER said 'I want to watch that again', and instantly started it over again.

Even thought Vandread could be viewed by many as a full filler series (save a few episodes which touched soley on the main point of the story) it is entirely too enjoyable to stop watching.

My impression of this show was as a Case Study one would conduct during a dissertation in college on the roles/effects/interaction between males and females. The first episode, when Hibiki is running from Dita, the things he says are funny stereotypes of men's perception of women, but thats what makes them funny.

The only downfall to this series is the 'unexplained' relationship between Dita and Hibiki. It feels that since they are the 2 main chracters on each side of the gender issues, that they should be together by the end of the series. However, I feel it was just thrown together, with not enough substance to it. Hibiki gained feeling for her, but based on what? All she did was 'annoy' him constantly.
However, the counter-aregument would be that neither of these people ever interacted with someone of the opposite sex before, so they didn't really know what to do.

All in all, then entire show is wonderful and I HIGHLY recommend it.

This series takes the mindset of a class of 11-12 year old boys and girls, gives them adult bodies, and gives them advanced technology. Girls and Boys live on different planets, fear and despise the opposite sex, and only forced circumstances can bring them together in harmony.

The animation during the battle scenes is both good and bad. The graphics and colors are well done, but the scenes do not look realistic in any way. The mechas and ships move irregardless of reality: with no thrusters or engines the ships move sideways and up and down; this is especially true with the mecha used by Hibiki. Also, in the cockpit views during battles it apparently takes no effort to pilot these ships, because none of the pilots ever seem to be doing anything with their hands or body to make their ship move the way it does. Also, battle scenes seemed to be repetitive, with the same scenes being used in different episodes. The "combination" sequences were also unexplained and completely unrealistic and too power-ranger or Voltron-esque for my tastes.

With respect to the character models, they are all unique and detailed, and emotions are clearly shown on their faces and in their body language.

The soundtrack was nothing special; I was not impressed nor entertained by either the opening or the ending song. The voice actors did a decent job with what they had to work with, and the emotions expressed in their words was believable and well executed. However, during the battles the sounds were a bit repetitive, and ceased to be as exciting after a few battles of the same sounds.

As to the story, there are many plot holes and unexplained occurences (including the background behind the seperation of the men and women; a huge event in the series) and background for the characters is extremely limited (even a main character, Dita, is given little to no background). The power source for the ship and the source of the transformation of both the main ship and the fighter ships is also never explained, and is a huge hole in the storyline.

Also, the episodes, for the most part, follow a simple "voltron-esque" formula: pirates get into fight, lose battle until Hibiki combines with someone, and then the battle is won and one of the girls realizes men can be trusted and are useful.

The theme of sexual tension in this series is also prevalent. Hibiki is constantly hounded by the females over "combining" (a metaphor for a relationship); Dita and Jura both wish to combine with Hibiki as often as possible, while the more stoic leader is reluctant to combine with Hibiki and only after combining does she start to like Hibiki. (The positions in which Hibiki and the girls are placed in the cockpit when they combine is also a telling point on Hibiki's relationship and dominance with the woman; Dita is on Hibiki's lap, Hibiki is on the leader's lap, and Hibiki and Jura are across from each other).

The characters in this story are given little to no background for the most part (how did the girls become pirates, how were they trained, how did they get the funding or expertise in the technology that they have, etc). The majority of the characters in this series are so juvenile that it is difficult for me to like them; especially Dita and Hibiki, two of the main characters. Indeed, much of the series' drama was teenaged angst or growing pains which was very annoying.

The two male sidekicks are extremely one-dimensional: one is an outgoing clown and a coward, the other is a rational doctor who is brave and mature. Each of their actions are extremely predictable and their personalities are extremely bland.

I won't be rewatching this anime and I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone; it isn't a great sci-fi anime nor is it very amusing. It is an original concept, but I believe this anime fails to make this concept interesting enough.

_______________________________
"Women, are monsters"
From the first lines of the show, I knew that this show was destined to become one of my favorites, just because of how funny I thought it was going to be. You know the show cant be all bad if it starts out with such an unorthodixed line.

But after the first space fight, I began to think i had just signed myself up for some kinda Gundam meets Power rangers: lost in space... lucky for me and the rest of the vandread fans out there, this was not the case.

ANIMATION: I was tempted to give a nine, but I was also tempted to lower it to a seven or lower for other various reasons. This show had some serious issues concerning the laws of physics (not that most Sci-fi animes dont). I mean the lazers that the ships shot bent around stuff in the way and curved back on course to their target, Come on now. and the Mech things could just randomly go in any direction they wanted withought the aid of any obvious kind of thrusters (most of the time).... aside from defying laws of physics (including the transforming part) the CG transforming scenes were almost all hideous, and didnt actually show enough to explain how a ship could transform in such a way. I mean If your not going to be showing how it works, dont waste time with some 10 second animation and just combine them in a flash of light or something. Other than that I thought that the CG crew for this anime did an ausome job. The animation team also did a pretty nice job, although I had a few problems with the conceptual designs for some of the ships as well as almost all of the female casts attire.. but hey thats just me, my mind cant just accept what im seeing, it has to anaylize it all pessamistically and ruin the experience for me v_v sheesh what a pain.

SOUND: I pretty much liked all the tracks and sound effects, But I realize that not everyone likes the techno scene so I have lowered the rateing accordingly.

STORY: I first decided to watch this anime because I thought that the story seemed pretty origional, and because in the overview on this site there was a mentioning of stealing ^___^.
Anyway, as the plot became clearer I actually liked it more and more (starting out though I wasnt too impressed) also they could have done withought haveing a fight in every episode... the figts got old pretty fast, it was mostly just fun to see the KUDIES kind of interactions the characters had.

CHARACTER: I think that the charaters of the show were one of the major strong points. They were all pretty unique and most of them had their background fleshed out as the story progressed.

VALUE: Ill probably watch this one again cause it was pretty funny. Id deffinately recommend the serise to people who like anime alot, but probably this wouldnt be a good choice for the casual watcher types out there.

ENJOYMENT: Normally I give pretty much all animes a 10 for enjoyment, but this one I think deserves an 7.3 (I round up ^^) I just couldnt get full enjoyment out of this cause some of the things that happened in the anime were just to wierd or perverted to be funny, namely how the cockpits configurations worked out and other things along that line... Another thing is that, although there was a lot of perverted/sexual humer/innapripriacy, I still fealt like I was watching an ofspring of some power rangers show (transforming is sooo lame v_v). also I watched most of this show with my little brother (im18hes13andacts10)

I still end up fealing that It could have been better tho

This is an incredible anime. How does any anime look so good on the cover and sound so interesting in its summary while destroying all of its potential in the actual thing? I'm really proud of myself actually. I can't believe I lasted a single episode of it. I am an incredible person.
Okay, enough crap. In reality, Vandread was so boring that I wanted to kill it for wasting my time. I fastforwarded through the last episodes just to find out the end, but then I realized that I didn't even have the end, and then I just stopped altogether. AFter finishing classics like bebop and trigun, I wanted to try something more modern and less intense, so I picked up vandread with the expectation that it would have a gentle fun slice of life plot with a bit of sci fi and mecha, entertain me and leave me in happy la la land for a few days. Instead, I was so bored in the middle of it... I could have killed myself.

I really liked this. I thought that it was a pretty good anime. Vandread has a lot of difeerent genres in it which makes it easy for more people to like. For example if you like action, scifi, comedy, mecha, or even a little bit of ecchi, and I sensed a little bit of harem in my opinion.

Animation - The graphics are amazing. They had a lot of detail in everything. It has a lot of different colors and shades unlike some anime. They also use Computer-Graphics which you'll see when they're in action in the vanguards and dreads. It competes with animation of today.

Sound - I had no problem withthe sound. The voice acting was above average. The sounds like space ships when they took ff sounded real, so did the explosions it was pretty awesome.

Story - Well the story was enjoyable. The setting takes place in the future where woman and men don't live together. The story has a spaceship full of women who didnt like men until 3 men snuck on their ship. They learn to get along and help eachother with the attacking of thei ship the Nirvana.

Characters - The characters all seem enjoyable. There really isn't much deep character developement. But they seem to all have somewhat their own personality. o will find a character in the beggining that you willprobably be your favorite throughout the series.

Value - The rewatch value is pretty high because most likely yo'll want to get a better understanding of the story. If you really enjoy it i think it would be good in your anime collection or even the start of yours. Either way I recommend this to any anime fan of pretty much every genre.

Another day, another anime. I am watching a little too much now but oh well. Vandread certainly is quite an interesting story. A lot of action with some comedic relief every once in awhile.

Before continuing reading, anything after this can contain some spoilers (though must are already made in the description of the anime) so only continue if you don't mind or if you want, just skip reading the next paragraph.

Vandread, as you should know from the description is a story about a universe where men and women lives on separate planets and basically hates the opposite sex to death (in a way, this is true in our world too, doesn't it?). So when a pirate ship, full of females, attack the men's and the Pakis cause the pirate ship to warp to another nebula along with 3 men, the journey begins to not only return to their own nebula, but to save both of their planets from, imagine this, the Earth.

Vandread certainly has a vast amount of characters and an interesting storyline with relatively good action scenes. By itself though, it isn't complete and you'll need to watch the season season, Vandread 2 to actually get the whole story.

Alright, continue reading for the rest of the review by category if you wish.

I sometimes think it's best to go into an anime not knowing too much about it, then when it turns out to be this good you can be even more pleased about your purchase!
I'm not sure what I was expecting from Vandread. All I'd heard was it was an anime about men and women living on separate planets and hating each other, which in itself is a very interesting premise, add to it the comedy element, mixed with the great characters and so far very exciting battle scenes and it all adds up to a very entertaining series to watch ^_^

Ah Vandread, a hard series to be objective about that is for sure. On the one hand it doesn't nothing particularly well. The art is too flashy, the cgi isn't perfect, there will be times when the beeping of computers will really start to get to you. Meanwhile the story chugs along, in leaps and bounds ignoring anything resembling coherent thought. It is the same story as ever, with the slight male versus female twist but they dont even try to make it smart.

The best comparison I can draw for this show goes something like this, if you watch it eventually the unremarkable j-pop OP will grow on you. This show is much the same way, only it works faster. Somehow despite being well short of remarkable on every level it is trying for:
Harem
Mecha
Romance
Action

It is a truly entertaining show, and withstands the test of time quite well. Personally it is the shows like these (dont take themselves seriously, purely entertainment), not the GitS movies of the world that I'm happy to come across.

Vandread is an all around great anime. I don't really like giving a show all perfects, but I really can't find something I didn't like about it. My only regret is that is wasn't longer.

The story takes place in a distant future where men and women live on separate planets and both sides think that the opposite sex are monsters. The story centers around mechanic named Hibiki who dreams of piloting Vanguard, a mecha. During the first episode, you also get to see how outclass the male society is compared to the female society by the males using two rulers to aim their laser. The male crew realizing that they have lost this fight and begin evacuate, but the end up leave Hibiki and two others. Something major happens were the male ship and female ship begun to merge. The women begin to explore the new and find Hibiki and the others. They are first held captive, but they eventually begin to help the women and later become friends. I knew from the end of the first episode that it was going to be a great series.

This anime (among others) is one of the best! Extremly good, and I offcourse recommend it alot! When I first looked at Vandread on reviews, etc. I tought, "Is it really worth buying? I mean, is it that good?". Now when I have watched the Vandread series, I find it worth it!

The world is split, and the females and males live split over the universe. The female and males dont want any contact with each other, and fight a way between them. But our 3 main male characters gets onboard one female pirate ship, the story gets interesting. Like, they dont know anything about male and female relationship, and it is really cool watching it all develope trough the series. The story is really good, only the pro's could think up a story like this (hehe). If you want something amusing, with action and mecha, get this one! (There is not any mecha talk, but the mecha is a way they get things done, hehe). ^^

The story starts kind of slow. then it starts to get more exciting as the characters settle thier difference to fight a common enemy.

The design of the ship and the characters personalities are very similar to the hit anime series Martian Successor Nadesico which I think this particular anime got its idea from. Like the character of Hibiki who is a chef at the same time one of the main pilots. He is also being chased around and bothered by a girl named Dito which is very similar to nadesico. In Nadesico the chef/pilot is Akito and the girl who chases him around is Yurika. Also other characters show an interest to Hibiki similar to nadisco where Other female crew show interest to Akito.

The concept on the other hand is very unique. Why you ask? Well thats because the male and females have thier own planet and are in constant war with each other. But there is a pirate ship where some male and a lot of females live in as they travel the universe and discover things that will endanger thier lives.
