| After having watched Blood the Last Vampire, Hellsing, Vampire Hunter, and read the mangas as well as the manga ''Lament of the Lamb'', this was another worthy Vampire title to be remembered. Perhaps it is the best compared with the previous titles despite the production date.
It remains faithfull to the atmosphere of the genre. If you like Asian horror movies or ghost stories this is one of the best animes on offer, along with the somewhat less impressive TV series.
It consists of 4 individual stories. the first works well as an introduction to the characters. In the first episode a female spiritualist is called to try to fend off an evil spirit that posseses a little girl. But not everything is as simple as it looks.
#2 takes place in a school where students mysteriously dissappear while dolls appear in their place. Sometimes this episode looked like a kabuki theatre, thats why I liked it a lot
#3 a medieval armor dissapears from a museum and Miuy seeks the help of the spiritualist to help her in finding it.
#4 finally explains Miyus past. this the first attempt to introduce Miyu's story. Notice that in this case the manga followed the OVA so the story here is very original.
the characters are good for such a short OVA. The voice acting is consistent and for a horror anime they help create the tense atmosphere. Himiko the spiritualist is determined till the end to find about Miyus past.
Miyu who's in a more childish and perhaps angst-inducing mood than the series remains enigmatic till the end and she's that makes the OVA interesting.
Larva on the other hand doesnt talk (except the last episode) but just follows Miyus orders wearing a mask. In the manga and the anime that is not the case though. There we see him unmasked and talkative, though very laconic. But the OVA is worth watching for this version of Larva.
I also liked the Shinma in episode 2. The rest I didnt like that much.
Overall one of the good 80's titles and worth watching more than once. The manga is also very good especially in design

| I first seen TV series first then want to try this out since some ppl Miyu looks more playful. It's was true, she look childish but she also took a turn on evil. Her laugh(yes she acutally laugh) sound so creepy I got a goosebum the first time i hear it. I don't hate it thou cuz it give me more mood in vampire show, the sound also give it in.
The story is a bit differnt but the main plot still standing. We didn't really see Miyu get to know other kids like in TV and I think other think her as cheepy girl. But the stuff is on Himiko and her past intersection with Miyu. Her relationship with her was more than just Vampire and Spiritualist, she met Miyu before... and... she forgot all about it. Ep.4 is where everything solved out, really nice stuff there.

| I think my interest in vampire/horror anime series started with both the VPM OVA and the TV series. Vampire Princess Miyu was the first OVA I saw...and at the time it was one of the best. It pales in comparison to modern OVAs, true, but it has a certain heaviness and darkness that makes it alluring.

| this is a slow paced, thoughtful anime that is very much rooted in japanese spiritual tradition. the animation is great for the time it was made but the story and characters feel disjointed and incomplete...to be fair, it is only a 4 episode OVA. i haven't seen the TV series that followed in the 90s, but by all accounts it seems to be much weaker. while not scary, it is very darkly atmospheric.

| Miyu has to be the best gothic anime I've seen so far. The animation is wonderful. The sound really sets the anime in that eerie, dark mood. The characters are truly what made this anime so great. Myiu is someone people can reconize. And let's not forget her companion, Larva. *melts* too bad he has to always wear that mask. But he still looks sexy, even with the mask haha.
People who enjoy gothic stories that can send chills down your spine then this will be a real treat. I just wished the series could be longer. Then I would've given this a perfect 10.

| VPM is a very unique title. It's so orginal, I can't even think of a title to compare it by.
What sets VPM OAV apart from other series is the exceptional use of atmosphere. The use of colour is just absolutely perfect. Though very old, the animation is pretty well done. The artwork is simply amazing. Everything is full of detail. On top of this, VPM OAV has a very unique, gothic style, plus a Japanese touch.
Complementing the wonderful visual is the hauntingly beautiful music and good voice acting. I find Miyu's voice to be particularly attractive.
The story is where this show faulters. It't not because episodic series are bad, it's because the episodes simply aren't very engrossing, but nor are they horribly boring. They are watchable and mildly interesting. The script wasn't very well written, nor was it bad. It's just average. But then again, I don't think there is another way to make this series without making it cliche. Miyu doesn't really have any personal reason to fight. She fights because it's her destiny. Arguably, you can say this is a lazy plot device to save some explanation, but I think it effectively avoids a lot of retarded angst.
None of the characters were very interesting and they don't get much background...except for Miyu. But hey, it's only 4 episodes long, what did you expect? Miyu is definitely a very unique character. On top of that, she is very attractive and elegant :)
To summarize, VPM OAV is very unique. Though it has it's share of flaws, you should still be able to find some enjoyment out of this title. If you consider the time it was made, it deserves a fairly good score.

| Vampire Princess Miyu is a nice series to watch. It doesn't follow the common stereotype of vampires abducting woman and all but that doesn't mean it's bad. The dubbing is done pretty good and Miyu's voice matches her childlike innocence well. The animation is done well for it's time, but it does look a bit dated. Overall, I recommend this anime to dark/horror anime fans. But I must say that this anime title really isn't scary but it's quietly disturbing in it's way.

| Average at best; but really good for its time. Had a very dark theme to it with a lot of tragedy involved. However it was hard for me to care for the characters since they were developed very poorly possibly because of the time restraint. To be honest I dont really know what else to write in this review since this while being fairly enjoyable especially for fans of the genre like myself still manages to be forgetful.
Not to end the review in the bad note I'd still say this might be something worth checking out if in the mood for some dark themed anime with a short length. Just dont expect too much out of it.

| Very traditionally japanese horror story. Not at all an action or blood-gore-zombie-fight type, most appropriate way to watch it is as a set of novels. Much like Hoffman's, but with this delicate touch of far east.

| this was a disappointment, i thought it would be much better, this wasnt crap by all means but it just didnt keep me interested enough
i so wanted to prove that this wasnt a 7.7 anime (which was the mean rating at the time that i was downloading it) but i suppose the ratings were right.
the stories were all too lose and no real aim, the characters were good though, i loved miyu.
sound... it was okay
id probably not watch this one again
having said all this, if you love vamire stuff (dont get me wrong like vampire stuff too), you'd probably enjoy this, and if you saw the TV series and like it but hacent watched this, it does explain a lot of the background stuff
now im on ep. 10 in the TV series, its looking to be just like the OVA...

| Vaguely dark with some interestingly surreal undertones (and very little sentimentality) the original VPM oav series was just crying out to be remade as a tv series....
Well, we managed to get half of what we wanted with that....
Japanese horror seems to work on a very personal level, for the most part. It is _personally_ cruel and horrifying, rather than creeping horror, or splatter and gore and the like.
VPM is now quite old, in today's relative terms, but the general conventions that operate with both live-action and animated Japanese horror are no different today as when this was produced.
The oav takes a very hands-off approach to Miyu's own characterisation, instead using Himiko as a catalyst for our introduction to Miyu's character. That she does not reappear in the tv series says all we want to know (or really care) about Himiko's fate. Miyu is the one we really care about, even if she has lived beyond caring, herself.
That emotional starkness is quite attractive, and one is left, at the end of the oav, wanting to know more about Miyu. It is a pity that we got to know too much about her in the tv series....

| pretty dull. the story was dark and kool. good supporting characters. the animation, tho nothing is BAD, at the same nothing is GOOD, either. IMO the animation was good considering this anime is from 1988. The Shinma are all very interesting and compelling to watch. in the end the story is good, the animation is bad. the characters are okay. good if ya got nothing else to buy / download.

| I am sorry to see that others haven't enjoyed this anime as much as i have. I think vampire princess has a depth that is difficult to grasp with one viewing.
Maybe I am wrong and this sort of anime isn't to everyones tastes, but the more i watch Vampire Princess Miyu, the more i think it is the work of a genius.

| A morbid anime series with great music(Kawai Kenji) and decent animation, this is one to watch on a rainy day.
Its depressing and horrific at the same time, and that's the fun of it. One of my first exposures to the Japanese brand of horror, and certainly one of the better in general. I made the mistake of watching it the same day I watched the Kimagure Orange Road movie and thats a good way to lose your sanity and/or commit suicide.

| the anime has a very surreal feel. the mood is well done. it is very artistic in style and setting. the plotline was satisfactory and surprisingly darker. in all, a beautiful piece of work which caters to those who like dark, surreal, if a bit unusual, anime.

| I expected more from this anime and by the end of the last episode I was very disappointed. There was no character development and the plot was nothing special. The only thing I liked about this anime was that it had very good music and sound effects that contributed to the eerie atmosphere of the show. I don't think I'll be watching this show again, but maybe I'll try the new TV series.
