Visuals. Story. Performances. Music. Everything adds up to a must see for Occult fans. If you have never seen Occult, this would be a good series to start with. It has disturbance, shocks, twists, and lots o' evils. Even a couple of characters that aren't too bad looking...

Love this manga. Very complex story line. It had a very deep and dark air around it. Larva is so hot. My heart skip a beat the first time he took off his mast. There not much of romantic scene between Miyu and Larva, kind of disappointing. But love the story never the less, very difference from your everyday girl love boy happily ever-after anime.
Warming: some innocent people always die in each episode, so make sure you can handle it.

Repeat viewings not recommended; this may damage your impressions of Vampire Princess Miyu TV ^__^

I really enjoyed this anime first time around, but this time I found it rather boring. The characters are dull, although very pretty.

Overall wash and rinse once, but do not repeat!!

This anime radiates angst, sadness, and depression. If you are looking for a happy ending, you won't find it in this anime. But, it is nonetheless enjoyable and interesting, if only due to its extraodinary uniqueness among animes.

The animation is not particulary good, due to the fact that this anime is almost 10 years old. However, the animation contributes well to the surreal feel of the anime: watching the various episodes is like watching a fleeting dream.

I like the sound, it also contributed much to the feel of the anime, and accentuated the transitions from light to dark moods. The ending song was especially good.

This anime does not have an overarching plot. Some people cannot stand these sort of episodic animes: each episode features new characters in a new story with Miyu popping up to destroy stray shinma. While each story is interesting in its own rite, and each one is as depressing and engrosing as the last, they are pretty generic. Each follows the same formula: strange event, Miyu sees but does nothing, tragic story unfolds, Miyu and Lava kill shinma in pretty much the same manner as ever.

Make no mistake, this anime is not about the battles: the battles are usually given only about 30 seconds or 1 minute or screen time. This anime is about the tragic human and shinma stories in each episode.

In fact, the only true overarching plot comes in the final 5 or 6 episodes, which were the most engrossing of the series. While I enjoyed the first 20 episodes, it was these last 6 that made me really enjoy the series as a whole.

I loved Miyu as a character: her calm detachment form humanity was eerie and surreal, while at the same time she was able to care about humans and become friends with them. Reiha's innocent yet detached cruelty and lack of compassion is also very interesting. Also, though Lava's background was not given much explanation, the depth of his character was still apparent.

Side character's like Miyu's school friends also serve well as contrasts between the innocence that Miyu can feel and the destruction and death occuring around them.

In fact, even the almost-useless rabbit character was interesting; though he did not have many lines or duties those he did have were usually important to the story.

This anime is one of the only truly angst animes that I have ever seen. If you like these kind of dark, macabre stories then Vampire Princess Miyu is the anime for you. It is definately a one of a kind anime. However, the rewatchability suffers for most of the episodes.

Overall, while I enjoyed the series, the first 20 episodes become a bit repetitive, though there were a few that I very much enjoyed. The last 6 episodes were very good though.

(Tokyopop version)

After watching the OVA I have to say the series looked more enjoyable. I was impressed by the individual episodes but felt dissappointed with the ending. It was messed up. But the story continues in the manga so thats why there wasnt a definite ending.

I have to say the individual episodes were very dark, angsty, nightmarish and serious. Happy ending is incompatible with this anime. Episodes unfolds like a ghost or horror story where in every episode an individual person is punished because he/she had the misfortune to meet a Shinma. Some Shinmas try to harm people, others try to benefit them. But in the end Miyu appears and puts an end to the dreams of everyone.

Here Miyu looks more mature than the OVA though sometimes one recognizes the annoying trends of every magical girl anime in her. But I didnt mind because not many magical girl animes are that dark. Her companion Larva is also very dark and there are 3 episodes devoted to his past, but nothing more concerning his background. One has to turn to the manga perhaps. The fact he doesnt speak a lot makes him more compelling in this case.

Reiha is also character I liked and she reminds more of the Miyu of the OVAs in her childish stance. Her rivalry with Miyu is left unconcluded. She hides also a dark past.

I didnt like the 3 schoolgirls that much. They lack a lot in character. What I liked was the individual protagonists of every individual episodes (whether Shinma or humans). With the exception of the strongest Shinma of the last episode.

Though the ending isnt that good it isnt a definite ending.

Worth watching and one of the most pessimistic and down-to-earth horror titles I've seen. Good horror movies must have that feeling to be memorable.

Also read first two manga volumes of Vampire Miyu and one of Vampire Yui.
If you'd like beautiful design and better looking characters the manga is a must read, though it suffers a little in story but it adds features not seen in the anime, like new characters and the story is very different. The anime on the other hand is close to the manga's atmosphere and has
one of the best music I heard.

This is one sad story. It's power lies in the fact that contrary to most anime and even real life nothing changes. In that respect it is more like being dead, or stuck in a dream. That also fits the story perfectly. So bravo for the people who made it, really really really well done. Although it is being said since the beginning, it takes a while to get used to the repetitive things that happen and the fact that humans don't seem to matter. In the end though, the understanding you get for Miyu is the reward. It actually feels like you have dragged yourself through centuries of meaningless destiny. Killing, killing, killing. I liked the flute Miyu played a lot, and the music, both begin and end, I found very good.

Very dark, climatic anime with huge potential. The music is great and amusing although the opening song, which is brilliant by the way, is slightly spoiled by the annoying women who keeps on telling us what are Shinma and that stuff. It can be useful and good for first two episodes. During the third, you start to get annoyed. Thorough the very beginning of the last episodes, I couldn’t resist changing the channel ‘til she stopped her line.

The plot is interesting and even if the “schedule” of some episodes is quite repeatedly the same, it’s still very thrilling. The other case are last episodes which are just cool and really uncliched. Or maybe it’s just me who thinks so ^__^ Anyway, the very last scene (before the final song) got me speechless and after some shock I went only “Wow”. Yes, that is a good word for it: shocking. There isn’t much quick action, quite the opposite, but it’s this slow and “dreamy” flow of the action that makes you so shocked in the end.

Characters are enigmatic and fascinating though they don’t develop much. I find Miyu and Larva amusing and I really pity Reiha. She is often the most disliked character among the fans (at least among my friends) but I think she doesn’t deserve it. She has her own reasons and she had gone through a lot of things. I guess she is the most dramatic character on the show.

Overall, it’s definitely worth to watch. Although not everyone likes this kind of anime, I think many will be captivated by this one’s disturbing charm.

Ok first of all, the word "happy" doesn't exist in this anime. All they did was killing one by one then at the end she kill(or got other kill) everyone so she will be the one left standing.

She's evil, not that she didn't her prey so they all can go rest in peace, she put their sprite in the ball then place it in her terrority just to fake that she atleast put them in a good eternel dream. I was sick just because of it. Only thing that I watch for is when Miyu or anyone get emotional or atleast playful but that rarely happen in TV series. The people around her aren't too great either, her friend was suck, her companian blow, and her rival was a kid who got upset cuz he didn't say her name when he dying. I still want to see more of Reiha but she die? or whatever too soon. The boss of the story was kinda suprising but still suck. I mean she didn't even use any attack or transform... she just dead after one blow.

-=-=-=-=-=-=-==-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=--=-=--

Animation was ok, when they zoom on the char faces the boldness were very nice.
Sound suck. I still piss at whoever voice is at the beginning telling annoying prelude. No sad BGM, just a comple fading random sound.
I wouldn't buy this or even spend a penny on this saddy nor re-watch it.

The trust is....I watched this anime because I thought Larva was absolutely the most sexiest thing I ever saw. But other than that, I think this anime was wonderful itself.

But I wished Miyu was more playful, like what she was in the OVA. But in this anime, she was this depressing girl who talks in a boring dead-like tone (in the english dub). There were many things that I thought went wrong, like the pink fluffy demon who always tags along with miyu and larva kinda killed the mood of this dark series. so did miyu's annoying human friend. I really wished there was more depth between the relationship between larva and miyu.

The series was very different from the OVA they changed many things. and in my opinion, i think the OVA was better, but it was too short.

The series could've been a lot better. But you should still check it out, the series has it's good points. The stories in each episode were all very interesting and unique. There were beautiful character designs. And the music gives an eerie but enjoyable feel throughout the story. All in all I really do recommend this story to those who can't get enough of Miyu. Plus, in the series Larva talks and you get to see his face!! ^^

Having seen the VPM OAV and having heard not-so-good reviews, I wasn't expecting much. But somehow I ended up enjoying it quite a bit.

The animation is definitely poor. It is almost worst than the OAV which came out almost 10 years ago. If the artwork wasn't so good, I might have given the animation score even less. But yes it's true, I like the artwork, it's full of little details. It somewhat compensates for the cheap animation.

The music deserves a full 10. You should all get the OST. The songs aren't only instrumental masterpieces, but the OST also gives you a whooping 34 tracks. Most OSTs don't give you so much value for your money's worth. The voice acting fits pretty well too. Miyu still has a really cool voice.

VPM consists of mostly 1 episode shorts. This is where most people complain about the episodic nature of this series. But I don't think it's fair to say an anime is bad because it's episodic. Most of the stories are actally quite engrossing. They have some sort of moral lesson. The only thing that keeps the stories from being amazing is the script. Had they written a better script, VPM would have been very good. Each Shinma is unique in its own right. I think they are the most imaginative monsters ever. They aren't as trite as other monsters. Their actions seem more animalistic. Their evil actions seem to be the only way they survive.

Keep in mind that episodic series save themselves from a lot of flaws. I think if VPM had one big story, it might have been even more flawed.

The characters suffer from lack of info. Miyu and Larva almost seem like secondary characters at times. In some episodes, they only arrive at the right time only to save the day. The more interesting episodes have Miyu interacting with her school friends. Besides that, there's very little character growth. And Miyu just isn't as beautiful and elegant as she was in the OAV. She ended up looking like furniture half the time. But one thing I like about Miyu vs other anime characters is her reason for fighting. There are no lame personal reasons for her actions. She simply fights because it's her destiny. Arguably, you can say this is a cheap plot element to save any plot explanation, but I see it as an original way to tell a story without adding a lot of retarded angst (think Gundam Seed angst). I guess they aimed at a different audience with this TV series.

Despite these flaws, I enjoyed VPM quite a lot. I really liked the imagnative stories that have a Japanese touch. I really liked the amazing music. And I think Miyu is the most memorable character ever. I could write pages about her. She's just so original as an anime character. What I didn't like was everything else, like the poor animation and the subpar script. But overall, it's not a bad watch. Don't assume that it's bad because it's episodic. Remember that a lot of episodic shows (anime or not) are good.

One thing I really like about this anime is the enchanting and traditional main character Miyu, one of a few memorable anime characters I've seen (especially thanks to her wonderful seiyuu). She's not you everyday hyper-active heroine, definitly not a gothic version of Sailor Moon as some claimed.

The last 6 episodes of the TV version explored more of Miyu's past, destiny, friends (isn't Lava so unrealisticlly beautiful?) and enemies, which is what the whole series should be about (and what the OVA did).

If you've seen the OVA, the TV series will disappoint you with its repetitive Shima-of-the-day format for the first 20 episodes. On the other hand, Miyu TV offers better animation quality as it was made more recently.

Some of the Shinma stories were actually very disturbing and throught-provoking, although they could've gone more detail with the story&character development in these.

This was the first horror anime I watched and I was really impressed. I mean some of the episodes were really creepy and makes you think.

I found the monsters could've been better.... way better. They often ended up looking really weird. The action scenes also could've been improved; Miyu has only one or two attacks. But these really aren't the main point of the series.

Great background sounds that always seems to fit the mood. I wasnt too crazy about the flute though.

The main story is interesting but is really just 12 episodes or so long, the rest of the episode aren't part of the main story. They aren't fillers by any means -- they help us understand the characters. Each episode has some sort of meaning or moral.

All major characters had hidden pasts that they slowly unveiled to great effect. They were tied to each other in ways you couldnt possibly guess.

Lots of character development. Even minor characters (those that get killed in the episode) have quite a bit of background/depth.

There is no real good/right or evil/wrong in this anime, it covers alot of the grey areas ie) not all the Shinmas are evil - some episodes are definetely worth rewatching if only to get a better understanding of it.

THIS ANIME WILL GIVE YOU PAUSE!!
This anime makes you feel weird and .... not really scared but like horrified/shocked.

If you love to laugh, then this isn’t the series for you because there’s nothing funny about it. However, if you like anime like .hack//SIGN and Boogiepop Phantom, then this should be up your alley. I enjoyed this series; however, there were some major problems with it. The series lacks a concrete plot: It’s just a series about a vampire girl destined to kill Shinma, demons that prey on human emotions. In each episode, Miyu confronts a Shinma and destroys it. They’re only about five episodes that have a real story line, and vary from the formulaic “plot.

However, the series is far from boring, and there are little lessons in each one. My favorite episodes were the ones titled, “Sepia Colored Portrait and "The Supple Face." In "Sepia Colored Portrait" an actor/photographer captures his past in a movie, and a Shinma is inside the film. This episode depicts the consequences of memories and not being able to let go. The man is obsessed with his lover of the past, and eventually, he is swallowed by the Shinma, which is symbolic of his destruction by his own memories. And the bitter irony of the “Supple Face simply cannot be ignored. “What will happen if you are reborn? This episode gives a twisted answer to that question. When watching the anime, I was hoping to get a back story to Miyu and Larva’s past, particularly how the two ended up together, and I was satisfied with what I was given.

One of the series’ weakest points are the characters: They aren’t very likable. Reiha was cold, almost “innocently cruel, and Larva was “just there. Miyu was the most interesting of the three, and that’s not saying much. However, though she can be cold at times, she did have certain sympathy towards humans, as shown through her relationship with Chisato. While watching her actions, I asked myself these questions: Is Miyu merciful? Or is she cruel? In the episode titled “Fate, I believe her actions were merciful. In the episode titled, “Dream of a Mermaid, I believe she was a bit cruel, but I completely understand why she did what she did. As for Reiha, thought she was not a likeable character, I was able to sympathize with her when watching her back-story. You understand why she resents Miyu, and feel for her because of it.

By far, the weakest aspect of this series is its conclusion. This anime broke one of the most sacred, unspoken rules: When a protagonist is confronted with a personal battle, she or he must be the one to overcome that obstacle, no one else. Let's just say that Larva is one of the most annoying anime characters because of what he did and what Miyu didn't do. However, Vampire Princess Miyu shouldn't be ignored. It's a good anime, but if you're looking for colorful characters and storylines that blow you away, look elsewhere. If you like a little complexity and dark themes, check it out.

I watch lots of vampire anime, and as far as that genre goes, this one isn't all that hot. At first I liked it, but after watching a few episodes it became very repetitive. Like Power Rangers, the plot is 'monster appears, monster causes trouble, miyu comes and destroys the monster in *exactly the same manner every time.*'
However, the opening theme is awesome, there is good animation and intriguing characters, like Larva/Lava/Luva. Each episode and it's "Tales from the Crypt" style one-episode characters are interesting enough. I don't know if you would want to watch this one over and over, though...

Nine years after the original oav, we get "Shinma of the Week: The TV Series".

Well, not quite, but almost.

VPM TV is one of those shows that inspires more spoof than awe. There are so many things about it that one can take the piss out of that it is a wonder people haven't.

The OAV inspired a certain sense of awe, simply because it was so standoffish and somewhat shady, almost surreal. The TV series has a pink monster bunny with an evil eye who could almost be Mokona's lesser-known cousin.

That this isn't nearly as stupid as it sounds is more a credit to the show's producers than anything else.

The tv series travels a different continuity path than the OAV, especially obvious in the final few episodes which, in fact, make up for the earlier faults of the series in a big way. What I said in my review of the Miyu OAV, about the personal cruelty of Japanese horror, applies in spades here.

The ending is every bit as awesome and nasty as I wanted it to be.

Awesome anime, great story with a nice kick that even surprised me in the end. Wow, I did not see that coming. Even though you know at she will win all her battles because the series has more episodes, they do a really great job in showing the conflicting emotions that Miyu has and how her suffering is so great. You go through the anime noticing how painful the life of a guardian must be, makes eternal youth look like eternal hell. The ending is sad and I hope that they do a complete ending for the series, however, I am satisfied with this anime, it has rewatch value, and next I plan on watching the OVA series.

Well what can I say? I just love Miyu. One of my first favourite characters. The TV series wasn't AS good as the OVA, but it was pretty good in its own right. The soundtrack is wonderful, with great vocals and beautiful BGMs. Like the OVA, the TV series is also dark. It may be an older anime, but it suffers mostly from the fact that there were some filler episodes and stupid things that occurred, but overall it's still a very nice anime. I still recommend watching this classic as it is still a very good anime overall.
Larva fans will rejoice with all the scenes of him unmasked and talking (which differs from the OVA) and those who've watched Rayearth will recognize that the same people did Miyu TV.

This series is not too bad on its own, but comparing it to the OVA is inevitable. While the OVA is subtle and artistic, the TV series is rather simple and sloppy. At best, it is a mixed bag where some episodes are touching and well done while others are simply predictable and childish. It is darker than some animes, but obviously aimed at a less mature audience than its parent series.
