Vampire Hunter D is about a half vampire named D who takes on a job to kill a real vampire who attacked a young girl. Stereotypically, she falls in love with him, gets in trouble and he has to save her. However, she is such a flat character and the plot is so dull that no one cares whether she is saved or not.

Vampire Hunter D is unfortunately a hilariously awful movie. I watched it recently with a friend, and the only reason it was enjoyable at all was because we were making fun of it the entire time. Just about everything in the show was awful, the animation was depressing, the sound sub par, the plot transparent and the characters unlikable.

There was just nothing to make this movie worthwhile. I would not recommend watching it.

I would first like to say that I have watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust before I watched this, and therefore was very dissapointed with this first version of Vampire Hunter D.

To start with, the animation is horrible, even for its time it was sloppy. To think this came out just a little while before Akira, with its excellent animation.

The sound was nothing to remember, and the English dub is atrocious. The Japanese voices arn't that much better either.

The story is full of holes, jumps around often, has no plot twists or surprises to keep you interested, and is generally predictable and stale the whole way through.

The characters, even D himself, struggle to be semi-interesting, and I didn't feel a thing for any character except maybe D's hand-demon who was at least a little interesting.

This anime has little value unless you are a Vampire Hunter D fan, and even then just to remind you how much better Bloodlust is than this piece of crap.

While I did enjoy some parts, like when D is cutting people up, it was a struggle to get through the movie and not just turn it off and stop watching.

This film could have been better, if the characters and the story had more substance to them. A pretty big disappointment

This looks and feels ancient. In the opening scenes, it also looked like it was gonna contain loads of distasteful fanservice. I mean, the length of the "skirt" the girl was wearing enabled panty shots to be taken from just about any angle. Thankfully the amount of fanservices in the movie wasn't TOO bad, but still, it isn't really necessary. What I think is the strong point of the anime is the atmosphere it generates. You can get quite absorbed in it. The well selected bgm tracks helps, though the awful dubs I was forced to listen to didn't help. The storyline is something we've all seen plenty of times before, same with the characters.. pretty cliched. There seems to be a lot more to the story than what was revealed, but the anime seems to be awfully reluctant to give away more info on the mysterious main character... I'm not happy about that.

I've no deep impression of this anime after I watched it. It's okay... not quite mediocre, but even further from being good. It might be helpful to watch this before you watch Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust, but, since I haven't seen that myself, I can't really say.

Probably one of the worst anime movies I’ve ever seen. Animation is very bad, which affects the enjoyment level to a record low. Seriously, the animation is so bad, even if the movie was from the 1960s,i'd still think it's older. Story makes kind of sense, but with the lame, underdeveloped, characters along with the crappy animation you'll find yourself not caring for it at all. Sound was decent, but it's just one of those movies when talking is optional for the characters, as they do more and talk less, in the worst possible way. Overall, This is a very old fashioned movie that, if it were made today, couldn’t hold it’s own.

One might be slightly astonished at seeing Vampire Hunter D's very low 6.8 average on Animenfo -- few animes ever reach this low of an amount. Upon further thought, it's not much of a surprise; the fans of this movie are mature enough to not give worked-up 10/10 scores, and there are enough people who see its myriad flaws to bring it down even further. The most scarring of these flaws is that Vampire Hunter D is mindless action pap. The story is sloppily-written and full of holes, and the directing is some of the worst I've ever laid eyes on; I was extremely disappointed in Madhouse for putting so little directorial effort into this movie.

Obviously, this title aspires to be little more than a brainless violence-combat flick, but the thorn in this ambition's side is its incredibly sloppy animation. "But it's 1985!" you might exclaim. This is no excuse; plenty of movies, such as Angel's Egg and Laputa, were released at or around the same time as this with far more watertight animation. The proportions in Vampire Hunter D constantly look offset, the animation is jerky and poorly-done and the backgrounds during all the 'action' scenes are lazily animated in an all-too-common rushing-by monochromatic backdrop. The anime's visual style is quite interesting (D has an awesome character design), but it looks almost awful holistically.

The animation, however, is the least of one's problems when sitting through this movie. Worse yet is the plot elements of Vampire Hunter D, which are so muddled and incoherent that its only aspiration seems to be to dish out more action scenes. All the movie comprises of is people getting kidnapped, attacking each others' home bases or getting lost. It feels like an exceptionally violent game of Hide and Seek at times. The ending is actually fairly decent, though the antagonists collapse way too fast and everything is uncharacteristically all-smiles. One feels slightly cheated when this supposed 'horror' movie doesn't contain a twinge of horror in its denoument. And, well...it doesn't have much horror anywhere else, to tell the truth. Vampire Hunter D tries to be gloomy and immersive, but it totally fails due to the cheap production values and embarrassingly out-of-place music.

And the characters, much like the rest of this movie, seem underused and underdeveloped. Everyone remains totally static right until the end, except for Ramica, who might have been a good character if the anime had actually USED her. D himself is interesting, but there is so little actual substance to him that his character suffers from Forced Badassery Syndrome. More annoying is that in some scenes he acts callous and unfeeling, especially towards humans, but in others he suddenly does a 180-degree change of heart and becomes sympathetic and warm (such as his interaction with Doris's brother).

I suppose I'm attacking the writing far too harshly, though, considering all that Vampire Hunter D wished for was to be a vapid action-horror flick. Unfortunately, if a viewer can't bring themselves to suspend disbelief enough to ignore all the flaws, then they probably won't find this all that entertaining. I could easily understand why someone might like this movie, since it's tough to be as picky and cynical as I am, but my ambivalence still resounds. It is important to note, however, that Vampire Hunter D does have a great deal of significance in the anime world. It was a benchmark for being one of the first complete anime movies released in stateside, which opened a gateway for more anime to pour in. Whether or not the offerings it brought are worth it is entirely up to speculation, but in the long run, Vampire Hunter D is something I'd call a classic...with reservations.

(I figured it would be best to review this before I watched Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust. :D)

Vampire Hunter D is a good film. For it's age (1985) it's VERY good. However, nowadays many other movies reached that level, and while I say it's classic You still may find it not to Your liking. Opening scene is a powerful one, and quite a few moments with equal power You may find in here, there is also some nice fighting and very good character's animation. And I mean here better than in hordes of shows made nowadays! Plus interesting main hero, and few villains, and of course ass kicking with vampire themes... who could resist? I must say, even fan-service is brought here in a way quite natural... and not intrusive (with one exception which proves the rule). Read More for details...

Good times on this one. I won’t comment and compare this from today’s anime, nevertheless a sci-fi/horror one. Although it hasn’t been so kindly aging in time, it can be noted for creating the incentive on Bloodlust. As for my thoughts on this, the animation and music were fine. They all gave the story a gothic feel into it, which highly improves the story when making it a more distinctive cult film. The one thing that made it less interesting was its straightforward ending that gave it a less involvement with the other characters. As it did have a typical plot of its kidnapping and then later involving rescue to Charlotte, there were some cliché that made itself too typical for its plot. However, there was something else to it. The main character who had that uncanny persona always seemed to have good intentions on his side, regardless of his own discriminative trait as being the “half“ vampire. I also remembered that this one had some relations to another segment of the story, which didn't have a good involvement with the main character as the other events progressed. In addition it had some trippy demons on it that were nicely developed within the storyline, such as Rei who always had a certain desire to have something that he couldn’t have. Count Magnus was portrayed as one of the horrid vampires, which would deceive through everything from his own word and to use people for his own benefit and his self-amusement. However, it did move at a very slow pace during the beginning and middle of the segment. It then had to forcefully drag itself later on as it resulted to have that quick ending. I think that it had merits on the fact it was considered to given some replay value on my part, mostly because I tend to favor this genre. If you are new to this genre or anime in general, leave it. It was the starting point of Bloodlust, and I could at least understand that from its value.

for its time I think this was a good anime.
looking at it last night I think that time has taken its toll... I can come up with more than just one or two things rong with this anime other than the Animation ageing. like the Enjoyment its not the anime that will make you wont to come back and see it over and over. witch also means that its not got mutch Value eather.
I also think that the Sound had been beaten with age and there are more that a number of things that could have been done to make this better.
but over all the more inportent parts of the anime make it a OK... nothing grate and thing to bad.. just ok

This really is a classic, but it sure has aged badly!!

It is a very straight forward story, with a few twists to spark the imagination, but really it's all just an excuse for D to wade in with his sword (so what's new).

Personally I find D quite an annoying character, in fact thinking about it I can't think of one character I particularly liked or felt sad about seeing go (well, maybe Luke the horse). The hand-parasite is his one redeeming feature, his anti-conscience if you will.

The animation and music are very very bad, so bad that it almost becomes good. Almost.

A brief note about the english-dub, it's crap. Possibly the worst ever. Watch the original Jap w/subs if possible (although my versions subs are pretty bad too).

Having said all this it's still one of my guilty pleasures to watch this movie from time to time, only after a relaxing drink however.

The animation in this movie reminded me of 2000 A.D., which I personally enjoyed. The world consists of monsters, the ruling class being vampires, who are the noblemen. The action takes place in a town where the aristocrat (=vampire) decides to make a human his woman. The woman (naturally) does not want this. Passing by is a hunter (I believe he generally hunts all monsters), D. The girl hires D. There is complication as the aristocrrat's daughter and a man in town who wants the girl, steps in to prevent the marriage. The vampire has many helpers D will have to fight. Nothing that exciting when it comes to plot, but there is no mess. The characters are pretty standard, silent type, woman with courage et cetera, but I found none of them to be annoying.

Vampire Hunter D is a decent movie. I have never seen Bloodlust the other movie but I know this is the origional. It looks dated animation wise, but was made in 1985 so that is not suprising. The story is your basic demon slayer for hire. It does have some value however. If you would like to know why read my review.

Not a bad anime by any means...The strong point here is the main character, whom I really thought was cool.

The first half of the story is far superior to the 2nd half - where it gets bogged down by the "demon" theme...I was kind of hoping it would shy away from that.

Surprisingly bloody for an anime made back in the mid 80s...But it just adds more of an impact to the animation, which is not up to par with today's standards - but still not along the lines of poor quality.

A must see for fans of vampire stories, but others might want to stay away.

I was suckered into this anime for the classic vampire hunting story with a futuristic twist. D satisfied my desire for this to a small degree as D battling vampires looked quite slick as the movie started off with a dark mood. But as the movie ended, that dark tone became all jolly and the mystique that I would want was really lost. Plus, the Count and Doris were just your run of the mill stereotypical characters in a vampire story as Doris plays the role of damsel in distress more than a hunter as shown at the start of the movie. If you want better satisfaction out of Vampire Hunter D, watch Bloodlust.

This film got me hooked on vampire/horror anime. Of course its sequel Bloodlust is far superior in every way, the original VHD has a clever story and started the trend. The combat and enemies are amazing, the art was respectable for its time, but the story stalls at some points. I like the treacherous interaction with the human villagers, something Bloodlust lacked (mostly because of a totally different plot). Also, Doris was a much better heroine than fragile Charlotte.

This anime is representative of many of the features that set 1980s Japanese style animation apart from that of the rest of the world. Themes of the modern vs. the ancient, class inequality and racial intermixing are brought to life using ultra violent images of the events that take place in the travels of a wandering lone hero. Is it even possible to count how many anime this movie has influenced? The animation is admittedly pretty weak but this is made up for by the brilliant character and set designs. The highly stylized characters perfectly flesh out an environment that is both futuristic and traditional. This fantastical environment works incredibly well mainly because of the old English style costume design and the beautifully illustrated D. The coupling of the “old with the “new is definitely one of this anime’s strong points, if you are for one reason or another disappointed with this movie, its beautifully crafted fantasy environment will surly salvage some measure of enjoyment. The music is very basic, nothing very memorable, but the voice acting (Japanese) really saves the sound category. The voice of D is done in a very nonchalant yet urgent Japanese style that solidifies his status as one of the great antiheros. Superficially the story seems very basic yet it becomes rather in depth as it begins to tackle social issues. It would be very easy to just say that the story is simple or that there really is no story, but I believe the subtle themes allow it depth beyond its outer shell. The Characters are another strong suit. For the most part they cover much of the typical anime spectrum (hero, cute girl, big eyed kid) yet the obvious standout D and the truly brilliant Greco show the creator’s brilliance in character creation. Overall I suggest that any anime fan see this and while viewing keep in mind the ground that was being broken when it was released. Many of the themes here might have been done more recently with better animation, yet this anime’s world will never be duplicated.

Not sure what to make of this anime, the best thing for me was the animation, the story was on the short side of things in terms of how good it was. The story throughout didn’t capture my attention that much, only at the start and it sort of went down slowly from there. There were seriously stupid bits in the film, maybe this was because of the age of the anime, but still, there were parts where the character acted dumbly and made stupid faces that you’d never expect anyone to make given that this is a serious movie.

The story isn’t well planned out, it felt hollow, even with the excellent main track, other sound effects were not up to scratch. The characters in this didn’t fell real enough, they didn’t act as you’d expect them to and some decision seemed flawed, D (the vampire hunter) was really good, all other characters weren’t, but the monsters in this were outstanding, brilliant designs.

That’s all there is to this film, a bit of romance which they didn’t act on, but I was okay with that (made it more realistic if anything). Just don’t expect, if you have seen other vampire stuff, to see anything innovating.

I watched Bloodlust before this. So obviously i was very unpleased with sound and animation of this. But after checking that it was made almost 19 years ago, i now see they are great for it's time. Animation is somewhat poor, a lot of flashing/cheat-background during action, still frames etc ruins the feeling. Sound is very decent for it's time.
Characters are very very well developed. All have personality and depth to them (except that st00pid one-handed mutant.. )
Story is pretty standard, save the damsel in distress kind of. But it's executed nicely. Overall VERY enjoying if you can see past dated visual and audio.

This anime may have been very exciting and enjoyable back in 1985, but today, it is absolutely terrible. The story line was ok, but the animation and sound effects were hideous. The characters looked very ugly and the action scenes were just 5 or 6 frames repeated over and over. I do like watching this anime every now and then just to see how far animation has advanced in the past 20 years. This anime is not for someone looking for entertainment.

This was the first anime I ever saw. The animation is a little weak, I mean it was made in the 80's. The soundtarck is nothing special. Nothing you'll be humming later on. The story is fairly interesting and draws the viewer in. The character I had to give a nine because D is actually a great hero, with the whole inner conflict going on. Overall it is a decent anime worth renting.
