| Windaria: ledgend of a one-sided battle.
this is a poinntless anime.. do not watch it even if you are board out of your mind. just dont, because one: Youll still be just as board watching it as you were before watching it and two: its possible that you could become even more bored...
do not watch
ANIMATION: one of the only parts of the movie that wasnt overwhelmingly weak was the animation. i thought that they actually did a pretty good job of animation from character designs, to backdrops, to action scenes... or what passes for action scenes in this movie. anyway im not entirely sure why this movie even deserved to get animated, there wasnt a hint of a story that anyone would care about, there was no character developement and well pretty much nothing else... The main character looks like he coulda made it into a street fighter game in the snes era
SOUND: the sound was pretty good compared to the other aspects of the movie. some of the tunes sounded like music from Zelda OoT though. the sound effects were kinda lame, but thats what you get from a 1986 production. anyway its not worth it to watch this show just because of the animation and sound which both would be considered sub par.
STORY: two countries are at war and one looses, im guessing there was supposed to be some emotional romantic conflict because of romance between the prince/princess of the opposing countries but well their relationship was about as dedicated as a a fat mans dedication to a weight-loss program
CHARACTER: Izu was a worthless character that only sought out his own glory which got him less than what he started with when all was said and done. All the other characters were severely lacking in personality
VALUE: 0
ENJOYMENT: other than the enjoyment i get from watching any anime i got nothing out of this, about a third of the way in i started thinking, is it over yet? when will it end??
DO NOT WATCH THIS ANIME

| Have you ever wondered what kind of movies would Hayao Miyazaki do if he did bad movies? I just found the answer: he would make Windaria.
Note: there are some spoilers in this review but the movie is so bad that you really don't have to be afraid of them.
It's not that the basic idea is bad. Sure there have been stories before of two countries, one lush and bright, second barren and uninviting. Sure, there have been stories where the heirs of both countries have fallen in love with each other. And sure, there have been stories of regular farmers becoming heroes of the realm. But it has rarely been executed so badly. It all culminates to the fact that nothing makes sense in this movie. I don't if all the strange plot twists were to tell us that the main character, the heroic farm whose name I already forgot (it's been four days since I saw the movie!), is the biggest idiot world has ever known. My eyeballs were literally dropping from their sockets as I tried to find some logic in his actions. Actually I suspect they cut out a crucial scene from the film where some evil witch puts a curse on him that makes him for example forget his promise to his loved one or makes him think that drowning a city won't cover it with water. Not that many other things made more sense: the lush, beautiful city is build so that at high tide it would be under the ocean if there were no flood gates. Of course there's one key that operates them and the guy guarding it is a senile old man who either sleeps or gives the key to any person asking it. As the countries prepare for war, we can see that the best the both armies can do is blow themselves up. And for crying out loud, as the barren country's prince ascends to throne instead of getting married to his loved princess he starts the war because of some royal traditions of never losing a war. Come on, you are the king! As in ruler of the country. And you were so opposed to the war two seconds ago!
Hmm, what else? Oh yeah, you know how Ghibli usually have strong female characters? Well, in Windaria the farmers wife (who btw looks a lot like Nausicaä and has a squirrel for a pet) has a couple of lines and the best thing she can do is to stay at home that happens to be at the clashing point of the two armies. "My promise to wait for him is more important than staying alive." There's also this mystical Druid character whose husband went to be the captain of a flying ship that gathers to souls of the dead. They don't bother explaining the whole ship at all and at the end Druid mumbles something about finally understanding his husbands mind (I didn't) and turns into stone. ????? WTF?! That actually was a perfectly fitting ending to the crazy movie. The princess on the other hand seems to be the only even half sane character of the movie (forgetting suicidal tendencies) but half of her job is just to offer some fanservice. As for how characters and the story worked out: I was so happy that the idiot farmer got such a sad ending. I hope he has a rotten life afterwards.
Now on the plus side... well, the final scene with the prince and the princess was quite good. Nicely timed and animated, it could have been touching unless I was convulsing with laughter and disbelief. It's not too badly animated nor the music isn't totally awful. That's about it.
I just love the alternative title "Legend of Fabulous Battle". I think if this kind battle really happened whoever knew about it would stay dead silent and not humiliate himself telling about how stupid people were in his country. Really, this is a not review, this a warning, stay away from this movie.

| The story is so boring. They made a nature scenes long enough just make people bored. Then they add some stupid people in the story so they can make the main character looks cool. Only 3 people that were normal(not smart), Roland, Hero, and Hero's girlfriend. Others is so freaking stupid than redneck in USA. Now... where the plot, not much there. 2 Kingdom fighting for pointless argument, actually there not even a argument in the series. 1 town want more water, but the town who controlled it don't want to flood their town just to be generous.
Since I'm never like classic stuff, this made me feel even worst. The hero is not a hero but a useless pices of shit. Good thing heaven punish him to let him lived and work hard for his sin.
Watch it if you reallly have nothing to do. But don't pay any attention to it, because it'll bored you to death. Just think of as a Soap Opera in animation form.

| I think this movie really could have been alot better, but Izu's actions seemed quite strange, to me. To be so easily be swayed to do whatever and without any particular thought to right or wrong really surprised me. It seemed to me that there was no rationale for what he did other than selfish gain. As such, he became quite a difficult character to like. . . Perhaps it could have been explained better with more time to delve into his motives -- actually, more time could have been used for other characters as well, but I do suppose that the time needed would have extended the movie length ALOT.
Overall, as I said, it could have been alot better and the plot really had more potential than what we were given. It's not a bad film, but I cannot say it's particularily great, either. Still, I think that it certainly is worth seeing.
On another note: I've read that the version released in English was heavily hacked, slashed, and altered. Probably so much that it and the original cannot be compared. I watched the original.

| It is Romeo & Juliet, all right, and not much else can be said about it. Some episodes had their special charm. My impression of this movie was ruined greatly by Izu' irrational behaviour. I can see the reason, why plot turns the way it is, but it was rather crudely done. Generally, sad movie, and not very touching. The only thing I was fascinated with, is a huge ship in the skies - strange and magnificent symbol of... well, you must find it for yourself.
