Before it was all about the cards, Yuugiou was about a host of strange games. Sure, cards dominated the series towards the end, but for a time there, you had a show which had other things driving it. As a result, this show has a layer of personality which the later Duel Monsters series lacks. However, its “game of the week” format is sometimes a bit unfulfilling. All in all, a rather fun yet strange little anime. I don't like it as much as Duel Monsters, but to the average anime viewer, I would recommend this over it.

Well, the story begins pretty well. A boy motivated to defeat the kidnapper of his grandpa. However, as they keep coming up with more and more cheesy plots. The animation isn't very good. The hair just isn't well drawn. Sound is alright I suppose. I would reccomend this anime for hmmm... 7-10

Sadly this is a show that gets alot of hate because its popular with kids. Ironically the people laying out this hate are the 11-13 year olds kids at that age when they believe they know all and are desperate to seperate themselves from child like things. As a mature 21 year old adult I must say I really enjoy this show. It doesn't have the deepest story, it doesn't have the deepester characters, but its not pure fluff like so many seem to claim. Infact this is one of the deeper kids shows out there. And everything is done in a very fast paced and in your face way thats just addicting for some reason. Call me weird, many pompous 12 year olds have, but as long as I enjoy a show I don't care who the target audience is, and I'm not afraid to say I enjoy Yugioh.

Animation, it's old and outdated. Sound, Ogata Megumi as Yuugi is wonderful! She's the main reason I watch this anime.
Story, yes please? :P
Character, stereotypes. Some of them are really annoying.
Value & Enjoyment, It's ok to watch it when you wanna watch something that isn't complicated yet not horribly boring. But I would NEVER watch it twice.

Wow ok. When I watched the first season, i was like this is bull shit. i mean the animation was gay, and i just didnt like it. I admit i thought i was too old for it. But as I watched more, i realized that it wasnt that bad. The animation got really good actually, like the Dragon episodes i mean. And the plot got interesting. Of course the whole Heart of The Cards ruins it, but thats k.

I think there shouldve been some romance between tea and yugi, but really, i only saw the WB version, so who am i to speak. I agree, that the show helps sell cards, but as u can c, ppl got over yugioh cards, but the show wasnt canceled! CS WAS CANCELED INSTAD HOW COULD THEY I LOVE IT! sry, carried away there, nvm... So yea, i noe the outfits are literally gay, but if setos pants werent that tight, he be ok. Yugi has a hair issue, joey needs a brain, and tristan needs a girlfriend. wat else is there to say except, the anime wasnt as bad as ppl think...

This anime has some rather horrid qualities to it, and the dub reflects this 10 times over. However I feel that this anime could be a lot better if they would just stop with the freakin cards. The villians Marik and Bakura are actually well done, they had a lot of potential but are ruined by the fact that their fiendish plots revolve around a TCG.

The Japanese original has some pretty mature occurances happen at times (suicide, self inflicted wounds, etc.). The English dub however takes out all of these and adds in an overy corny friendship plot. The basic point of this show is to advertise the card game. Which is a waste of a storyline which could of had more potential if they stuck to magic.

If you don't like it, than don't watch it. It's as simple as that. Now, this show was targeted toward young kids so of course we won't see the characterizations that we see in Evangelion or FullMetal Alchemist. The story wasn't as good as it could have been but this show still gave us a break from other anime shows that make you think through the complicated plots. The character design is a bit different from other shows(from Yugi's hair to his eyes) but it's not too hard to get used to. I probably wouldn't watch this show again since I'm not interested in these kind of stuff and I wouldn't really recommend this to anyone either but if you like shows like this, than just have fun watching it.

It appears to me that most of the people reviewing this anime are thinking that it is the "Yu-Gi-Oh" that is on Kid's WB. Actually, this is the first series of Yu-Gi-Oh when the infamous "card game" has not been introduced yet. This series has never showed in America. The animation is quite different and the show seems to have darker overtones. I enjoy this series more that the one on TV because of this. It's still not great and it still has some of the unfortunate and annoying "morals" that the second "American TV" one has but it is better. Check it out and realize that this is not the same as the one on TV.

oh my , i'm reviewing Yu gi oh . i remember the time when i really loved this series , but after a while it started to annoy me , and then i stopped loving this . maybe because i strted watching better series , and then i understood that this series is really nothing compare to those quality shows .

so , yu gi oh is about a boy named yugi who fights against evil people who want to take control over the world or to do other horrible things with cards . yes , cards . cards are the ultimate weapon in this series . and the strongest cards , the gods and exsodia can destroy the world . but , as expected yugi stops all the evil people and save the world everytime . how does he do it? simple , he fights against these evil people in the "duel arena" (i don't know how to call it in english , so i hope you won't nimd if i'll call this stage "duel arena") . the fight , duel actually , is played by cards , which means , every player has a deck of cards , and the rules say that he can hold just 5 cards at the time . in the arena there are places to put the cards , but the cards have to be put in their places : there are 5 places for magic/trap cards and 5 places for monsters cards . then the game goes by truns , and on each turn every player takes a card from the deck . i have to admit that the game is really good and enjoyable , but in the series it just sucks . the battles are boring at the most of the time , played stupidly and predictable .

the animation is not bad . somewhat i liked the style .

the sound is not bad as well , the op songs are very nice . but the voice acting is just horrible . maybe it's the israelian dub , i don't know , but i couldn't stand their voices and their way of talking . just digusting.

the story is stupid , but it's the first time i saw such a story . but this story doesn't have the potential to be a good story , though .

the characters are shallow and really boring , and they look gay. especially yugi , his costumes during the series are aweful and looks really-super duper gay . oh , and pegasus is gay . :P yak.

so , this series was enjoyable when i was little and didn't know the world of anime , but now i hate this series . it made for money , just like pokemon . but until now i like the game and play when i have time . call me , little kid , no life shit , i don't care . i love the game .

Yu-Gi-Oh is an anime created for no reason other than to promote toys (playing cards, to be specific). Realizing this, along with the fact that the target audience for this anime is kids, might have made it easy to go easy on Yu-Gi-Oh. Unfortunately for Yu-Gi-Oh, however, it was proven that it is very much possible to make a descent anime out of a toy/game (i.e Medabots, which is no masterpiece, but is most definitely enjoyable). And Yu-Gi-Oh fails utterly being enjoyable. Very much the same way, it fails on every other aspect too….

Animation is the first link in an endless chain of utter failures. Yugi is possibly the ugliest protagonist out there. He's hair looks like he was electrocuted, and mistaken for a waal, which resulted in some punk spraying graffiti all over his head. The environment isn't bad, though very generic and uninspired. Animation is unbearably slow. It takes the characters forever and than some to perform the most basic of actions, such as drawing a card. Yugi and his preadolescent friends are way too tall, which made the animators draw the adult characters even taller. These adults end up with long, lanky limb, tiny heads, and seemingly neverending torsos.

I haven't seen the Japanese version, but the acting in the English one is downright sad. Most of the time Yugi sounds like a 5 year old boy (or a 7 year old girl, you pick). Upon becoming Yami (this deserves a paragraph of it's own. More on Yami later), he sounds like a 50 year old guy on depressants. Joey is apparently from Brooklyn. Everyone else is on par with these two. It would have been funny if it wasn't so sad…

And speaking of sad, nothing is sadder than the so called "story". Basically Yugi beats Kaiba, the world champ, thus making Pegasus want to fight him, and what's a better way to get into a fight than kidnap someone's grandpa with your freaky golden eye? Yugi than sets off to duel island (or kingdom, or whatever) to defeat Pegasus. Usually this would take about 4 episodes. However, with a single card game lasting for at least two episodes, it takes forever. To add insult to injury, we are also treated to all of Joey's battles, making this slim storyline last forever.

The very worst part of it all, however is the "big picture". Yugi isn't that great a player on his own, but he has one of the 7 legendary "millennium items". What makes them legendary? Well apparently these 3000 years old artifacts bestow upon their master an amazing power: the ability to cheat at cards. Most of these give you victory by giving you mind-reading, mind-control, the ability to see the future and so on. Yugi's item, however gives you the ability TO NEVER LOSE A GAME. There doesn't seem to be a reason for it, other than dumb luck. Yugi will have about 0.5 life points remaining, at which point he will get exactly the card he needs to inflict a gazillion points worth of damage upon his opponent. Yugi keeps rambling something about "the heart of the cards" or something like that, but if you look carefully you'll notice that Yugi never shuffles his deck, so basically the heart of cards is the almighty power of cheating. Than there's the butchering of the English version. Tugs no longer pack any weapons. Now they just point at people, threatening to poke them to death with their lethal index finger. You won't see thm poking, though, as any trace of violence was removed. So now basically a character will lunge at some thugs, but with no violence it would appear his sudden movement scared them so much they became startled senseless and faint. A fine bunch of fearsome foes, aren't they? And also there seems to be an emphasis on the power of friendship. Apparently having a bunch of people stand there and occasionally (way too often) yell "you can do it" gives Yugi strength.

And a fine bunch of friends these guys are. For 30 episodes, Yugi occasionally becomes almost twice as tall as he originally was, and his voices changes to become about 50 times lower, yet nobody seems to notice. The characters seem to remain exactly where they were throughout the entire series. Yugi never stops talking about "the heart of cards". Not even for a second. He talks about it before he draws a card. EVERY SINGLE TURN. The villains aren't that much brighter. They all seem to give up on good monsters so that they can use weak monsters with scary names. For example, a strong card named (made up) "guardian of the forest" will be discarder for the sake of "gardrebavvv, the horned horror of the mountains", even though gardrebavvv is half as powerful. Not only that, but every single turn is followed by a long, detailed explanation, revealing the baddie's entire strategy.

For the first time, it's bad, yet bearable. For the second time it just isn't funny anymore…

eek. Kids and games (or beasts) are the worst combinations. They make stories that suck.

Oh, it's difficult to express my opinion about Yu-Gi-Oh. I'll try: the animation is below average. The story: it's bad, bad, bad, the only interesting point, being the associations with Egypt (not enough to make it even bearable, though). The plot is so common these days it's almost impossible to like. I mean, having another 500.0000... animes whose stories follow the same plot lines probably makes people so much less interested. Games, kids and tournments... how original.

The-characters-are-PATHETHIC! Yuugi really gets on my nerves. The rest of the characters kind of blend with the background. I don't think I can tell them apart.

This title has nothing that can recommend it. It's like "mass produced anime" or something. It's like you have a computer, insert a few ideias for a story and then it produces 1000 different series all with the same story; but instead of cards you have magical creatures or some item. It gets kind of boring.

Ok this must be the worst show ever.

The animation was intended to be cool and different, well they didn't manage to make it cool but they shure made it different in the wrong way, horrible, even Pokemon or Digimon had better animation, and old animes like Saint Seya and Sailor Moon can be rated way higher than this in animation... and have you noticed the long minutes they just show a static picture of Yugi thinking about his next move? that's called a money saving technique at the expence of the viewer, i could give you many examples like that.

The sound? i hate it. the characters? i hate them. What is up with the hair styles and the clothes? this is a real fashion crime, somebody arrest the designer of this nime, just look at the main characters and you'll get how stupid this anime is.

The story is just horrible, a guy that fights some kind of card game, and yeah the cards have special powers and monsters of all kind gt out of them. Plus the guy never looses, beats everybody and acts all cool, what a lame anime. We hear the same "cards soul" "we believe in you" crapp and the battles are so stupid, a bunch of guys showing off cards, and that' about it, remember that this is the most repetitive show ever, one fight per 2 episodes, that's the ratio and the most uninteresting one, we always know who's gonna win, even before the fight starts... What i hate the most is the way they dramatize and try to give the fights a World-Importance tragedy.. come on, it would have een better if it had a laid-back comedy mood to it.

It's clear that this is just another Pokemon version, they thought that maybe they could sell Yu-Gi-Oh card games like Pokemon did, but it's clear that they failled.

Well at least Pokemon had cute animals and a better animation compared to this, "note that i gave Pokemon an overall score of a very low grade" and Pokemon had a few jokes in it, while Yu-Gi-Oh, well i don't ven know why it's marked comedy here.

I only saw a few episodes of it, just out of curiosity, cose there's such a hype with my little brother's class mates. And i'm just about shure that this is the worst anime ever.

Well overall year 1998 was a very sad one in the anime world, it witnessed the popularity of hartless, sensless, stupid so called animes created with the only reason of making an opening in the west of animes and making european and american kids spend money on suh foolishness that doesn't have anything of the anime soul in it. animes like Pokemon, Digimon and Yu-Gi-Oh, lucky for us, that trend is over.

I just wonder how could 2 of the most powerfull anime producers: Bandai and toei make such a lame anime..

here we have yugioh...what can i say....its not THAT bad but its certainly not my fav AT ALL.

The thing i like about this r the cards...i admit they r pretty interesting..And i like all that egyptian stuff but then what makes this anime dumb is that fact tht yugi never ever loses so the story gets very predictable. Also if the bad guys lose at a duel or i should say, a card game, they can no longer take over the world and must surrender...oooooookk...so now card games r used to determine the fate of the entire world....lol...I'm sorry i can't help but laugh at that...

All in all...this is another kiddy anime and another marketing schmeme like beyblade. Sheesh.....whats with North america getting all these dumb anime....there r dfinitely ones way way way better out there....

Also NO THIS IS NOT JUST ANOTHER ATEMPT BUY THE MARKET. This anime came from the mind of Kazuki Takahashi who didn't really intend for it to be about cards. The music is really memorable. REMEMBER PEOPLE THIS IS THE TV SERIES THAT WAS NEVER SHOWN ON TV IN THE U.S.

Alright, you can either hate this show or love it. BUT PLEASE DO NOT COMPARE THIS SHOW TO POKEMON. That's a bunch of crap. If you watch this show you would know that it is nothing lke pokemon with a gay lil kid named ash running around winning every battle and releasing all of his pokemon. But granated, Yugi does win his share of battles (which gets on my nerves cuz he wont lose) but the main reason why I like this show is because of Kiba. Kiba is the most devoloped character in the show. It explains his background, his status, what's important to him, and his character changes troughout the course of the show. I really like this show but there are a lot of pitfalls in it.

NUMBER1: Yami Yugi's yelling whenever he plays a card.

NUMBER2: Tristen and Tea. They are not important.

NUMBER3: Yugi always winning.

But I do like the egyptian legend behind it and the fact taht they use cards does not annoy me in the least bit. This is an anime I enjoy, and no it is not pokemon.

Blah, I wonder how people can think this is good. Every episode I see consists of either Yugi fighting with some n00b, or this other idiot fighting with some other n00b. When Yugi fights, all he says is 'OMG I MUST WIN NOW OR ELSE MY FRIENDS WILL BE LOST AND THE WORLD WILL BE DESTROYED!!!1111'. Because somehow his friends always get in trouble and somehow, when he loses, his powers will be gone, or something.
And when this other idiot fights, all he can think of is 'OHOHOH I SAW YUGI DOING THIS, I WILL NOT DISAPPOINT HIM!111'. Hmm, alright...
Sp on with the fights themselves. Fighting with magical halographical cards is kind of ridiculous, but well, little monsters in plastic balls is too and that series is cool anyhow. But well, I can summarize all the fights in this fictive dialogue (so no spoiler).

Idiot: 'Yugi you will be sent to the kingdom of shadows because you lose'
Yugi: 'oh no, if I lose the world is destroyed!11'
I: 'I summon great imperial two faced warrior of doom!!!111, and I will put two cards unseen on the playfield'
Y: 'You lose! I summon fantastic linear creature of intense magic and I will attack your great imperial two faced warrior of doom!!111'
I: ' but you can't!11 because I now play a card called mask of internal devotion to the 4th layer of indepence. that prevents your fantastic linear creature of intense magic from attacking my great imperial two faced warrior of doom'
Y: But you can't!11 because I now play this magic card called proeagoe that represses your mask of internal devotion to the 4th layer of independence.'
I: 'But you can't!!!!!11 Because....'

etc etc etc
This goes on for 2 episodes per fight. Quite annoying to say the least. Those long stupid names are always called fully when they want to attack something. Man, makes me long back to the time where you could just hear PIKACHU, THUNDERSHOCK, and everyone would be dead, because Pikachu is such a bad-ass.
On top of that, those idiots always reveal their tactics and the pros and cons of their monster when Yugi asks 'WTF is that thing'. WELL HOW DO YOU EVER GONNA BEAT YUGI IF YOU TELL EVERYTHING YOU DUMBASSES...
At least Ash had a pokedex instead of those dumb opponents.

For the rest: Animation: sucks.
Sound: Don't know, must suck too. Dutch dub is terrible that's enough.
Story: Unoriginal and badly executed.
Characters: Flat and unclear. They appear to have emotions and patterns, yet you don't really decipher them. You don't give a damn either so that doesn't matter.
Value: 2 points, because you might need to see how bad this is.
Enjoyment: Well it's fun to see this go stupidier every new episode.

Conclusion: I was bored when I wrote this review.

Yu-Gi-Oh! is the story of Yugi and his friends who are caught up in the game craze that is sweeping the nation. Yugi's grandfather manages a gaming shop and introduces him to an ancient Egyptian card fighting game called "Duel Monsters". The game pits different mystical creatures against one another in magical duels on a shifting battlefield filled with traps and magical pitfalls. When the haze of battle clears, only one can be called Yu-Gi-Oh!, King of Games. Yugi unlocks the secret of the ancient Egyptian Millennium Puzzle that releases a powerful spirit of an Egyptian King, Yami Yugi. When Yugi solves the Millennium Puzzle, he is awarded with the spirit of the all-powerful game king. And he starts on a path to become the King of Duelists!

My opinion:

Yu-Gi-Oh is the so maniest monster fighting anime. But it's slightly more intresting then the previous ones. Unlike pokemon it offers a great help for it featured card game. Fans learn excellent card strategys that they can use in their card game. There is nothing much to say about the story, the card games are the most nice thing about it. They look not too shabby and are nice to watch once a while.

The characters are alright, they form a great team. But like I said before the best thing are the card battles. If you like the card game then you will like the series. I don't play the card game but enjoy the battles on tv, I think that the card game is too strange and hard after seeing the show. But for the players this is the show for you ...

Some episodes are booooring, stretching out a cardgame of which you already know the end-result before it even started. Yet some other episodes are just so great and funny to watch that this serie still is one of my favorites. The characters are quite interesting (and there's a whole lot of them too), only the duels can get boring after a while. Very boring. ^^;

Its an anime about a card game. It isn't something like poker or pinochle that require a certain amount of skill to end up winning at the end of the night, its a collectable card game. My opinions of CCG's are rather low (played M:TG for years), but I won't go
further into that now.

No matter how irrelevant the card game may be on its own, the characters always find a way to treat it as a
life or death situation. No matter what rules are given for each card, they manage to use it in a completely different way by the end of the season.

I don't know why watching someone play a game would ever draw people in. I'll just go back to watching my Prince of Tennis and Hajime no Ippo. ;)

Perhaps THE ugliest characters ever in existance of anime. Lots of talking and very little action. The character dubbed voices are by far more annoying than pokemon voices. Although I have seen a few Japanese episodes and their voice acting is about 100x better, and the music in the back ground is not all screwed up like the american version. Why are american animation voice directors so stupid? The story is pretty stupid but the duels are definitely worth watching. If you enjoy playing magic the gathering, this anime is a mediocre version of magic with only 3 classes of cards. Seems very limited in play, so on the other hand if you enjoy magic then this might be one to skip
