This is one solid anime. Drama, action, comedy rolled into one. To think that this anime existed since 1992 and is still aired on tv is simply amazing. I have watched both the dubbed and the subbed ones and I go for the dubbed ones because it gives more justice to it (which is kinda unusual because I usually prefer subbed ones). The story is good but the ending is different from what I expected. Characters are created in such a way that they blend with each other perfectly.

This anime surely sets the standards for shounen animes. Definitely a classic that even the future generations will love.

anime was my all time number 1 as a kid! I couldn`t , i can`t and i don`t think i will be able to find something as interesting as this anime. Don`t get fooled by what the sites are telling you about this anime , there is no anime like this one! I searched for so long and couldn`t find anything similar. DBZ and all other recomandations wich they say that they are similar to Yuu Yuu Hakusho can never even get close to it!

It is like an old song from the 80`s that no one can ever forget and noone can ever copy , do something that can stand up to it or be better. That won`t ever happen! I like each and every single episode , none of them has bored me!
And did i mention it has awsome intro / ending songs? (especialy ending songs)

It is about demons and humans , how they fight eachother. The Character`s personalities are very well displayed. You will see demons with bad and with good sides , same goes for humans in this anime. You can`t judge wich one is good and wich one is evil. There simply is good and evil in both sides. That is one of the messages of the anime. It tries to tell you that a human can be sometimes more crueler to then a demon. The story is so full of twists and turns ,that you sometimes don`t know who the real demon is.
So one of the main theme is "How much can you judge someone by his appearence instead of looking in the inside of the person?".

I am very impressed by the personalities of the characters this anime has , each of them is so unique and every single one continues the fighting no matter how hard it seems to win. In the end,the one with the strongest will survives!

I can rate it only with 10 , there is nothing better , belive me!

I originally watched this part way through back when it aired on TV dubbed.I thought it was quite good so I recently re-watched the entire series subbed.
Yu Yu Hakusho is a relatively enjoyable action series that tells the story of a boy who is gifted with a talent for fighting. He eventually grows in the series to become immensely powerful. The power growth and numerous battles put it in a class similar to DBZ. If you like DBZ, you might like this. If you're looking for a romance, look somewhere else.

Somewhat generic but also entertaining, YYH sets out an example to all those pretenders on how to make a Shonen show.

Being quite old, the anime still stands firm with today's anime standards in terms of the characters, animation and art. Sure, nothing outstanding and the art does get lazy near the end and theres a sense of repetitive scenes (ala DBZ) but the show gives itself a nice unique style to it, with the introduction of the Yokai (demons) and main characters which range from the outstanding (Kurama) to the not-so-great (Kuwabara). In all though, pleased with the animation all round despite its age, but that isn't where the anime drop points for me.

Lets look at the fights, well, never really as clever as the other togashi work (Hunter x Hunter) but also never really as dull (like in Bleach) but its mixes a good portion of intensity, lastability and uniqueness in it. The character powers are varied and different, not so different from the also generic Flame of Recca where everyone gets a unique ability of some sort. It isn't also dissimiliar from that with a nice portion of the series dedicated to a tournament style arc. Called the Dark Tournament, this arc occupies a good portion of the sereies (over 50% or so i reckon), as with FoR, its a standard setting, and alot of time is taken into each character's fight as they progress to the championship while meeting friends and hardships along the way. It's a standard premise that YYH does well at, and by the end of the legendary fight between the antagonist and Yusuke, the series somewhat steps down a gear.
This is the problem, after the epic fight between the badguy, a new badguy comes along who happens to be infinite stornger than the last one, its an annoyance since so much of the series is hyped on the previous badguy, a new one comes along and tries to ruin it all. The problem starts on this arc, despite it being a good arc with interesting powers and intelligent play (not too dissimilar from HxH), the power levels come into play. Unneccessary imo, it just makes thigns more confusing, at the start of the Black arc, the power levels of the main characters are only ranked B (which is apparently very very strong) but the anime goes OTT with the new badguy who happens to be of higher rank. Ok, i can deal with this, its nto hard to imagine that there's a stronger badguy for Yusuke to fight, but the next arc comes along. The Three Kings saga, the power levels are calculated with numbers now, and apparently those with 100,000 points are exceedingly strong, it makes me wonder if the author actually did these power levels to give a sense of danger or strength, or was it just to combat DBZ's power scouter.

The fights in these last two chapters are less in quantity but quality is relatively the same, especially the fight against Sensui, who happens to be quite awesome despite my initial hate for him. In fact, the last arc is so small, i didn't see why the anime was stretched for another 20+ episodes or so. The last two arcs don't add up to the enormous tournament arc and the Rando/4 beasts chapters.

Hence, the biggest gripe about this, unequal chapters ruin the end of the series which was thoroughly enjoyable. If they ended with the Dark Tournament arc, it be a higher mark, if they extended the Black and Three Kings arc, it would be a higher mark. But what's there on the plate is a great start and middle with a disapppointing end.

Overall 7/10
Grade: B-

this story is about a 14 year old boy who dies from saving a boy form a speeding car and gets a chance to comeback to life.it is unexspecting how he became a spirt detective.other than that most of the eps were boring.it wouldve been way better if they ended it after the dark tornement.this is good beause how it was made in 1992 and is still on tv,and its still the top 198.

Yu Yu Hakusho is a shounen anime which didn't know what path should it take. While its beginning is one of an adventurous tale with interesting characters, its later part is nearly brainless and unexciting ass kicking.

The main problem of this show lies in the fact that up until episode 90 it has no apparent excuse for main character's strength. Dragon Ball Z has Sayans, Bleach has Death Gods, Naruto has ninjas, but everything Yu Yu Hakusho has is one 14 years old brat who just happens to be strong enough to not only beat every human in the world, but strongest monsters from the underworld as well. Unfortunately, most of the same goes to the supporting cast as well, with the exception of Kurama and Hiei nobody seems as strong as anime tries to make you believe. Thanks to that pretty much every fight is cheapened to the level of a simple street brawl. Add the fact that newer characters have no development or even a background from episode ~10 to ~90 and you get quite a boring chore in place of an anime. Fortunately, the pacing of this show is to be commended, fights are usually one episode long, or even shorter, thanks to that there is a huge load of fights in this show, too bad the "strength" issue eliminated most of my interest in them. Well, as you might've already notice I keep repeating episode ~90, that's because from that point the whole atmosphere of the show dramatically changes. Suddenly an exciting excuse for Yusuke's strenght is apparent, old characters start developing, new characters start getting backgrounds and the whole show rises up to a new level. Unfortunately, despite being this long it ends short, with a complete ending still hanging, but I guess that's to be expected from the show of that kind.

If you are a fan of shounen genre and you have ran out of anime to watch, then you might as well give Yu Yu Hakusho a try. It's not as good as Naruto or Hunter x Hunter, but it's still an improvement over Dragon Ball Z.

yu yu hakusho starts with yusuke losing his life by saving a little boy. but he gets back his life when he work as an agent for the king of hell.

its the usual story and its often compared to dragonball. i liked yu yu hakusho much better. the fights aret that monotoneand they dont have dragonballs to bring everyone back that died. it never gets boring to watch yusuke getting stronger and stronger. he has some allies that joined him and he fights alongside them.

in the end i think this anime is underestimated. it has a huge potential and uses it partially. just wtch it cut your brain off and enjoy.

Suprisingly enjoyed this gem from the past. When I saw the first few moments of the first episode, was a bit purturbed. Damn! This is real old school. Not to mention Kuwabara's annoying voice!

But as sure as grapes come in more shades than one, the series actually got me quite interested and excited. I even got my wife to watch this one along with me. ANd hey we absolutely devoured through the episodes (all 112) like fat kids on chocolate.

An experience I surely will not soon forget.

Some very funny scenes and some emotional ones.

BTW. The story somewhat reminds me of the more recent anime, Bleach.

One of my favorite animes from its' time, and one I have rewatched many a time, Yu Yu Hakusho has just the right combination of action, character devlopment, comedy, and intriguing storylines to make this a great anime.

The animation itself is nothing too spectacular, but somehow it seems to fit well with the mood and feel of the series; truly I did not notice any flaws other than the somewhat dated quality of the anime.

The soundtrack was memorable, and all of the Japanese voice actors played their roles perfectly: I especially enjoyed Kuwabara's and Hiei's voices. It fit their respective personalities perfectly.

The storylines, will each arc is fairly simple and a bit predictable, are all engaging enough to keep you from being distracted from the true emphasis of this series: the characters. Thus, while at first glance the "monster of the week" and Martial Arts Tournament plot lines may seem simple and boring, Yu Yu Hakusho is able to create the small twists and tweaks in the plot to make this series especially unique and keep even those tired plot lines interesting and new.

To the characters: Yu Yu Hakusho has some of the most memorable characters I have ever watched in an anime. This vast collection of characters, all of whom have unique and intriguing background stories and personalities of their own, each bring something to the series to enhance it. The interaction between Hiei and Kuwabara, Hiei and Yusuke, Yusuke and Kuwabara, etc, feels real and genuine, and it is easy to see the character growth in this series both within each character and between the characters.

Side characters like Botan also are essential to the series. In particular, the relationship between Yusuke and Keiko, a girl from his school, brings in that dash of romance into the series without being the typical cheesy "win the fight, get the girl" type romance.

Overall, I would say Yu Yu Hakusho is the most enjoyable martial arts anime of them all, and would reccomend it to anyone who is a fan of either martial arts movies or martial arts anime.

Why not love this anime. It seems i cant stop watching this show its just so addicting. The story of a 14 year old street punk that is put down by society but that all changed when he dies saving a little kid from an out of control car and makes a deal to get his life back for becoming spirit worlds spirit detective. He gets put on casses to defend humanity. Highlights of his battles are when him and his team (Hiei, Kurama and kuwabara) Are blackmailed into the dark tournament as a team to fight other participating demon teams for the enjoyment of the black black organaization. Yuske at the end is forced to go up against togoru. With the rage of the death of his master by the hands of toguro and also his best friend it takes yuske to new hights but will it be enough to avenge there deaths and chop down toguro at 110% or will togoru be to much for yuske. Well you will just have to watch the anime yourself to find out.

This is probably one of the best kickass animes i have ever seen. Everything is good about this show from the characters to the story. I have to say when sensui is introduced in chapter black is when the series really hits its climax (even though i didnt think the series could get any better after the dark tournament explosive ending with hiei unleashing his dragon of the darkness flame on bui and kurama turning into his former demon self yoko kurama and yuske blowing toguro away at top strength). Also i find the older style of the animation to be better than most of the new animation out today. Togashi yoshihiro really expreses his brilliance with this show. Its a must see for anyone.

Along with three other big time animes that aired during Adult Swim and Cartoon Network back in the day--Rurouni Kenshin, Dragonball Z, and Inuyasha--Yu Yu Hakusho is what got me into being an anime freak. Though my addiction is starting to fade, because I'm saddened at the fact that there are very few animes on the level of Yu Yu Hakusho. It's a rather old anime; almost an entire decade old since the manga ended, but it's still uncomparable. To this date, I haven't watched anything that is deeper, more complexed than Yu Yu Hakusho. It's far from a Dragonball Z ripoff with its set of complicated, mysterious, yer endearing cast of characters and villains.

Yusuke Urameshi is a boy who just died. He led a very broken down and scrubby life. He cared for nothing. Yet, when a young kid whom he hardly even knows is about to get ran over, he goes and sacrifices his life to save him. Koenma, the manager of Spirit World, decides that it's not his time to die yet, so he revives him. Yusuke was then appointed as Spirit Detective, solving supernatural cases that threaten the existence of humanity. Along with his bestfriend Kuwabara, and two culprits that were a part of one of Yusuke's investigations early in his career, Kurama and Heia, the four embark on several adventures to save the world from the clutches of greedy demon and human hands.

Yu Yu Hakusho's addiction isn't driven by its fights (Dragonball Z), or by its plot twists (Bleach). Actually, that isn't entirely true; Yu Yu Hakusho's success is partly thanks to its story and fights, but its mostly because of the love for the characters. The four main characters are some of the most unique and diverse protagonists in anime, that they're easily attatchable. Many people compare Heia with Vegeta, but if they look deeper down, they'll see that the similarities are only matched up with their sour attitudes. On the surface they're similar, but it's the inside that counts, right?

Like most great animes out there, Yu Yu Hakusho starts off good, and gradually gets better and better. Well actually, most animes start off slow and then make their way to good. But this is different, as it starts off good. The first couple episodes concentrate on Yusuke's trial to regain his body back, then the episodes after that revolve around rather simple cases. They get bigger as they visit Maze Castle, participate in the Dark Tournament, and battle against human emo psyhics that want to destroy the world. Some may argue the last arc is the worse, but I feel it's more of those inbetween the line moments that English teachers are always emphasizing upon. Really, you can only love Yu Yu Hakusho more as you watch more of it. The little school life moments that are shown are quite entertaining themselves.

In the eyes of others, the arcs that run through Yu Yu Hakusho could pass for average and/or above. To a certain extent, I would have to agree with those opinions. There really aren't many eye drooling fights, nor are there any plot twists to anticipate. The many different stories contained within each arc start off promising, but reveal little to enhance it even more. But like mentioned before, the arcs are as good as how much you like the characters. And while the fights aren't as good as Dragonball Z's (nor repetitive), the concepts and strategy behind them is what makes them so intriguing. Though the factor making each of Yu Yu Hakusho's arcs as good as they are are the aftermath episodes, particularly the outcome of each character that premiered in those arcs. It's in those after moments where the characters, especially villains, truly shine. Figuring out their characters and finding out their true motivations and intents are like solving an extremely difficult puzzle.

The soundtrack and music are very memorable. They compliment each moment perfectly; whether it's sad, mysterious, or during fights. The opening theme, which doesn't change for 112 episodes, which is the precise length of the anime, is a really catchy one that I'll always remember. The first ending, The Homework Never Ends, sadly doesn't last the entire series, but is one of the best anime songs I've ever heard. Both the ending and opening themes are also the only times I prefer the dubbed versions over the subbed. Speaking of dub and sub, Yu Yu Hakusho is the only dubbed anime that I prefer over its original. I've watched several episodes in its original, and would always find myself switching back to English after five minutes of watching it. The script in English is much better done and helps expand on Yusuke's badass and careless personality. Plus, the voices are much better matched up in its English form. The Japanese Kuwabara kind of annoys me. And I normally prefer the subbed version too.

The animation is pretty average, but it's rather impressive for an oudated anime. Though it's quite odd how Kuwabara's Kurama's, and Yusuke's uniform are so distinct compared to the rest of the schools'. Like most demon based animes, one of my personal pet peeves is how outragiously different each demon is to each other. Demons of all forms are shown throughout the anime; insect types, human types, green, blue, horns, praying mantises, etc. I feel that this form of portraying demons is rather exaggerated. I mean, why can't they all just be the same? Red skin with horns, or blue...or whatever! Yes it might get boring seeing them all the same, but having such a large variety can be equally as boring sometimes as well.

To wrap it up, Yu Yu Hakusho is a shounen that mainly appeals to an older audience. The younger audience however would still be attratced to its fights. Though I feel that it can only be appreciated entirely if someone older was watching it, because the characters are just so deep, unique, and mysterious. Like most animes, it starts off average, but gets much much better later on.

Possibly the best shounen fight anime ever created in terms of exhillerating fist fights, enigmatic characters and interesting plotlines.
No matter how hard you try not to, you can't help but compare certain elements to Dragon Ball Z! but unlike DBZ, even the most intense fighting only lasts a minimal number of episodes (no 5 minutes til the end of everything and yet 10 episodes later, the fight is still going strong *lol*).
The only downside to this anime (and then it's only expected of something this age), is the continuous reuse of certain action scenes. Otherwise I highly recommend YYH to anyone who loves a good long fight anime; actually I'd recommend that everyone try this out ^_^

watched em all, very good series.. character development is well done for a series this long.. Usally I find long series have terrible endings but this series just kept getting better and better and finished with a very satisfying conclusion.. I highly recomend this if you love fighting anime and dont mind its length. Unedited the characters show alot of attitude but great heart, and there is quite a bit of humor mixed in as well. I think this anime's rankings are unjust, Ive seen 60+ series and this is firmly in my top 15.

One of the older and better series during its time. Whether people like this or not, it is actually one of the funnier shounen classics from around its time. It's decent to watch, but I always thought that the manga was more of a great read for its story. The characters were portrayed well, as for the humor had seem to be given so nicely to their role. I also noticed that it tends to have more humor than the action itself, sometimes even receiving a certain drama to some of the plots. And on the side, I thought that it also done well in including some of Urameshi's and Kuwabara's school life from part of the story. And speaking of Kuwabara, he gives me an impression that he was the best character in the whole plot for his comical persona. For a TV series, it's fairly worthwhile.

I always owned some of the manga and loved it so much as a teenager. So I picked up the anime recently. I was actually kinda disappionted to tell the truth. Its got interesting fighting and some cool characters and some depth to the story but somehow I never emphatized with Yousuke.

Maybe it was because this was from way back so I found it dated but somehow, the story didn't click with me that much like the manga had me reading over and over again.

Value 10
Enjoyment 10
Note: Based on episodes 1-66 , dvd version, italian (my language) dub.

I've watched Yu Yu Hakusho a while ago on tv, and I liked it. So, since they made 5 double-dvd boxes at an effordable price, I decided to buy them and re-watch all again (I had forgot most of what I had seen).
I have to say that it has been a good choice. I'm usually NOT a fan of fighting-violence genre, but I like to take exceptions when I find something captivating; and Yu Yu Hakusho fulfills that statement.

Animation: it's clearly kinda poor, the characters aren't much good to see, if you except the two demons Kurama and Hiei (Hiei the most) and Botan as female (even Keiko isn't beautiful, and she should be the female main char.)
Anyway, I don't think animation gotta be the most important thing in this kind of anime. The fights are interesting, and some good moves are shown.

Sound: unusually for me, I'm not judging an original japanese version, which means original voices + subbing. This time I've italian voice actors.
I should say that the voices I've heard are quite famous for italian-anime and fictions, but some of them were never heard in this kind of shows. I.E. Yuusuke is dubbed by an actor who usually has hilarious/lame roles. Same for other characters. Sometimes i switched audio to japanese (but unfortunately, no subtitles on dvd, so I had to guess the most of what they were saying).
As result, the voices are impressively different from original version. I found just 2 similarities: Kurama and Koenma.
BUT.. I found the italian version still well done and very enjoyable, I liked Hiei's voice the most. SO.. I'm cutting 2 points from sound due to unfaithfulness to original, but I did appreciate it.
Nice OP (Hohoemi no Badukan) and normal ED.

Story: There are 2 parts: hyper action on first 25 episodes, and then a certain slowliness from 26 to 66 for the tournament.
I don't give 10 because some fights in the tournament were kinda lame, useless and used as filler, when at the end you could often have guessed who had won and how.
But overall the story is very good, it started slowly but then it hooked me since from first Yuusuke's duty as spiritual detective. The missions are various and interesting, and the tournament never stops to be fascinating.
You'll always keep wondering what will happen next, and not always your wonders will be true.

The Characters are the strongest point in the show.
Particularly Hiei, he's one of the most interesting characters I've found in anime shows so far.
Character development is immense: once you arrive at last 10 episodes, go back and watch first 10, and see how much the characters are changed, mentally, phisically, psychologically.

Value and enjoyability are a double ten.
Undoubtfully for enjoyment, I watched up to 7-8 episodes in a row, when in presence of an intriguing development of events.
Value 10 because, animation apart, they did really a good job, delivering to attendance a funny and entertaning product. Probably if they didn't cure the animation too much, it could have been for a low budget. But, thinking of series with magnificent arts, and nothing else, at the end, who cares?

Of course I'm looking forward to watch episodes from 67 to end.

Meanwhile, I've read Flame of Recca is very similar to this, so it will be one of the next I'll watch.
What more than this to say that I really liked Yu Yu Hakusho?
