Really this should be shown to animator students and artists and not dim-witted viewers like myself.

Forget that you're watching an anime. Because with this title (and to a lesser extent with Minor Blues) the producers experimentate with animation and use of CG and I have to admit that this is one of the most impressive use of CGI I've seen.

The visuals are again unique. If you liked Tortov's Diary you'll like this title too, though I liked the former title more.

This was based on a children's book from what I read in the end credits. Perhaps a perfect way to adapt a book in a movie.

THough the theme may be for children, only adults will appreciate the art of this masterpiece.

One of the best short movies I've seen, full of symbolism and aesthetic awe.
The ocean settings are uniquely and magnificently designed and I was left wondering how they could create something like this.
A must watch if you like artsy titles

I am not sure how to review this. I did not hear any sound in this anime. Thuogh I did hear sound in the beginning, the rest was blank and good thing there is a subbing, if not I was more clueless about this anime.

Did you like Cat Soup? Yeah, me too. How could anyone bring themselves to hate an animation with nothing to it but visceral imagery and simple, unadorned charm? Well, the same principle applies in Kujira no Choyaku (The Whale's Jump). The visuals are the driving force of this random little short, full of style and quite unlike anything else anime has to offer. If you dubbed the voice track over and showed it to me, I would have guessed it was a European cartoon, but nope. Bandai obviously tried to emulate that homely, simple style, and it worked to a tee.

What sets this apart from Cat Soup, however, is that it's just not as good. The former title, for all it's worth, had some sort of objective. I was constantly lost throughout its narrative, but I knew what the protagonist's aim was: to save his sister. Here...it's just a collection of completely random scenes, spattered upon a completely random setting. Kujira no Choyaku will leave you full of questions, like "Why is the sea made out of glass now?", "Why is the whale leaping so slowly", "or What the hell is going on?" Of course, it feels no obligation to answer these questions. In short, this is animation for the hell of it. No window-dressing plot, no troublesome exposition, just outright graphical pompadour. And who could hate it for that?
