The sequel to the Record of Lodoss War OVAs, Chronicles of the Heroic Knight is more of the just more of the same; the story is actually pretty much a rehashed version of the OVA storyline with some new characters thrown into the mix.

The story can be seperated into two "arcs"; the first, episodes 1-8, consists of an arc with the old characters being featured, such as Shiris, Parn, Deed, Kashue, Slayn, Ashram, etc. The second arc consists of a new up-and-coming knight trying to prove himself who love Kashue (Parn 2.0) named Spark (yes that is actually his name) who falls for a 10-year-old girl named Neese, the daughter of Slayn.

After the first 8 episodes, the old characters pretty much cease to be important, only filling in once every couple episodes and at the end in minor roles. As to the band of merry men who travel with Spark, they are pretty much the same type of characters who travelled with Parn in the OVAs: a dwarf warrior, a magic-user, an elf, and a man and woman mercenary who fall in love.

Despite the lack of screentime, Deed continued to be my favorite character; Parn and Kashue were full of dramatic fluff and Spark was just an annoying brat.

As to the plot, the second arc plot follows the OVA plot and remains "save Lodoss from the evil Wagnard, who is trying to reincarnate the evil goddess, with the help of Karla", with a side of "Marmo invading Lodoss" and "Ashram doing his thing".

The story moves extremely slowly, and I found myself bored for the majority of this anime series.

The best part of this anime is the cartoon at the end of each episode, which makes fun of the anime series, usually with a dose of humor about the episode you just watched. They are fairly funny (more so because I found the series boring and cliche, and the cartoon parody was exactly what I was thinking about the series as a whole). It was these cartoons which prevented me from giving this anime a "1" as an Enjoyment score.

The animation is at times decent and at times terrible. I don't know about their budget or whatever, but the many still scenes during battles (the "action freezes") are extremely annoying and ruin any drama in the battles. The backgrounds are stiff and movements are not very fluid.

The voice actors were decent but not great; I really got tired of Sparks' voice pretty quickly though. The music was good, but not great.

I wouldn't reccomend this to anyone except fans of the OVAs who wish to see more, or someone who doesn't mind a lot of cliche dungeon and dragon stuff in his fantasy anime. You won't find anything original in this series.

(based on epidodes 1-13 & 21-27, english cast)

I couldnt find episodes 14-20 for rent but I didnt miss that much anyway. I am not familiar with the original books or the OVA and probably wont bother again with anything concerning Lodoss. Thats only because I lost interest in fantasy stories (hated LOTR too).

Lodoss TV is 27 ep. long and it a real sequal from the ova, the setting is 3 year after the wars of hero.

The beginning is great done with perfection. All characters both new and old come together and made an apparent. They deside to put name on the bottom everytime a new char which is good but they done it twice both in early ep. and then once more in ep.9+(which the whole thing start again) kinda annoy me a little.

Parn and Deed still there, Eton*, and King Ashrem* were there to give us a warm welcome. New char appear aftword(ep.9+) to give us another freshness to start the real journey in TV series. You'll starting to notice that Parn and other old original kinda fades aways give us a chance to looks into new chars details instead. Spark and other new char done well to subtitude Parn and old hero. You will see old chars have more confident and more clam than which they were used to be. On the other hand; new chars will laugh and play jokes on each others. Everything about chars is perfectly done, it really hard to make ordien focus on new chars and while keep the old one around.

Exception to the 10/10 on chars, other things in story will drag it down. there's no more suprise(except old chars appearing once in the while) in story or evil plot anymore. It's always about doing bad thing and our hero will defeat them no doubt. The sound and animation clog the flow. Some of the early animation is badly done. The mouth moves with unsync voices, the soundtrack doesn't have enough emotional to make the scenes excitment. It's just too bad.

While you'll be bore with all the plots and story in TV series, try to look into all the chars details and focus on them instead of whining about lame story over and over then you might see something interesting to think or watch for.

P.S. Try to not fav. any char cuz you'll just get more piss off later on :P

Like the comedy-fantasy genre, the dungeons and dragons concept is pretty much a done deal. Let’s face it: Basing an entire design on the most banal video game material isn’t exactly my idea of genius. Although I mildly enjoyed the original OVA, I must admit it was riddled with role-playing game-like faults- mainly the prosaic characterization and the occasionally sleep-inducing story. Chronicles of the Heroic Knight corrects these flaws by replacing the dull characters with appealing ones and providing a plot that I didn’t find myself sleeping through.

Remember Parn? In my review for the OVA, I complained that he was one-dimensional, a character that I couldn’t have cared less about. He’s still paper-thin, but this time around he’s a little cocky. Dammit, he’s a hero, and in five years he’s learned to act like one. Fortunately, Parn is no longer the main character. Orson, (remember him? The berserker?) who was but a very minor character in the OVA, is the main character in the first part of the series. In fact, he was probably the best character in the entire thing: whether or not his "emotions will return to him" plays a significant role. In the second part, (taking place ten years after the first), Spark- a young dude whose greatest wish is to become a knight- is also a much better character than Parn ever was. All the other characters fill in their monotonous roles when the time comes for it. Neese was an irritating character; she reminded me of Sylphiel from Slayers. Magic users are never interesting. Give me a warrior any day. Or an elf.

Because the series takes place after a certain point of the OVA (not after the ending), Chronicles of the Heroic Knight ignores certain key events as if they never happened. At other times, it merely retells certain events; as a result, there were a few times where I had a sense of déjà vu. Most of the time, though, the plot is straight from something I’ve played on Playstation. They’re plenty of dragons in this. Dark elves. And three artifacts two parties must get before the resurrection of a certain god. The plot is so linear and processed that I almost expected for a save point to pop up. But I really couldn’t have cared less. After all is said and done, Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight is a cliché-ridden adventure story for a slow, rainy day.

Hard to rate.
the animation is roughtly ordinary minus, the story is as lame as it gets. I mean it really is simple.

Now to the plus side. There are many charchters and most f them are well devoloped. and althogh the story is lame anyone who loves Fantasy novels will most likely find this anime enjoyable becasue it really reminds me of a Dungeons and Dragons game or A novel.

The best plus of the series is the chibi part. after each episode there will be a small cartoon (something like 3-5 minutes) which will be quite funny and quite often parodical about the anime itself. Sometimes I found myself continue to watch another episode just to see the chibi part.

Despite having arguably the best opening of any anime, Lodoss TV was kinda disappointing... After watching the OVA, the characters seemed so poopily portrayed, and I was happy when they started following Spark instead. Once they stopped following Parn and co. I felt a lot better about the whole series, although it's not really anything excellent. It's not terrible either... especially when you're a bored fantasy anime fan. I was impressed with the end of the series (I wasn't sure how it was all going to resolve until the very end). Overall, not excellent, not terrible. I got some enjoyment out of it.

For die-hard fantasy fans and in particular for fans of the original Lodoss OVA this will be absolutely great. For everyone else this may not be their cuppa!

The story moves along quite slowly, but you come to care about the characters and the ideas are all there to make it worthwhile. The first 7-or so episodes (i forgot how many) is a seperate intro-arc storyline with Parn, Deed and some characters from the OVA (it also introduces little neese) but this is the poorest part of the series. This is because it rewrites the history of the OVA, unless they all have goldfish memories! But it is once the longer second storyline gets underway that the series really takes off.

The characters are all pretty standard RP game fare, but are all done well. The animation is far superior to its 1990 predessor and the music is not as yarring too.

I love the fantasy genre. I thought this series was interesting. There are a lot of characters with whom you can relate to, and kept the series alive. I was a bit bored with the story though, it seemed pretty typical to me, but I watched it till the end, and I simply loved those chibi episodes at the end of each episode, hehe. I LOVE the music for this anime, another favorite of my anime song list, heh.

I would re-watch it again, if I had a lot of spare time. Maybe I was zoning out half way through, because to me it just seemed like a lot of missions took place, but I'll sit through them, and cheer for the heros and heroines, as well as Ashram because he is a totally rad villian. ^-^

Wow, what garbage. The music was the only redeeming factor to this mess. the voice acting was pitiful, animation dull and cliche, and this series made me hate characters I used to think were cool. They made Orson look like such a little emotional wimp! Parn had turned into a dramatic windbag. I was less concerned with the story, and more with the way this series took characters from the OVA that I really liked, and turned them into boring retards. I swear, some of the dialogue in this series sounded like it was right out of some nerdy chatroom. The OVA may not have stayed true to the novels, but it is superior in every way. I can't see the TV series appealing to anyone other than little kids.

Not a patch on the original oav, this tv series is essentially a reboot of the storyline, without actually adding anything to the depth of the original, despite being twice as long.

The animation suffers quite markedly during this series, despite there being better production standards doing the rounds all these years later. One wonders why they didn't just broadcast the oav and then run a 13 episode semi-sequel afterwards, with the same budget they had for these 26. It surely HAS to improve things.

Whats more, it is almost practically what they do with the series, with original characters appearing early, to be replaced by the tv regulars later. In both we get the worst of it. The characters we've come to know from the original are without the warmth of recognition we should expect from them, almost as if the time between the production of the oav and that of the tv series has made them mythic figures, untouchable by fresh minds.... But then, the new characters are also weak, so we really cannot blame everything on that.

The music is still very very good, and the opening and closing titles are fantastic: lightyears ahead of the show they contain. A pity.

this isnt as good as the OAV, it's just like a re-tell of the OAV with alightly different character roles and obviously longer.

the best feature of this was the music which was greatly improved from the OAV but the animation was quite a bit worse than the OAV.

i have to say i REALLY got fooled by the opening squence in which it just looked so cool, the ending sqeunce look fantasic too. but this level of quality was not to be found in the actually series.

i realy found trouble in terms of motivation to carry on watching this series, i dont really know why, but the set up (themes, animation, background, genre) were all good and what i would normally go for. i suppose the story and the characters were lacking in terms of interest.

my scores are mainly all 5s, if yo know how i review, then you'd know that i treat 5 as an average which means overall RoL isnt bad.

p.s. the bit at the end of the show got me more excited than the main show, that just shows you how normal the main show was. yet another disappointment...

Alot said this pales when compared with the OVA and I think so too, although the gap is tiny. It's worth watching, if you like the ovas, and collecting, if you are a dnd player.

I'm going to have to go against popular opinion and say that I felt that Lodoss TV was superior to the Lodoss OAV. I left that 27 episodes gave it a chance to flesh out the story a bit more. It was not without its drawbacks, which I will explain in futher detail below but I found it quite entertaining.

I find that I tend to rate the anime I most enjoy. I thought I should change that habit and this is as good as any anime to start with.

The animation for this anime is a huge let down. After seeing the intro one thinks the animation will be pretty damn good, but that's just to deceive you. The animation has very poor detail and a very low frame rate. The story and character development are little better. The story was slow, incomprehensible, and dull. The character development seemed non-existant.

I think the only people who will enjoy at all would be die-hard Record of Lodoss fans who see the LOTR series as the bible.

Its a fariy okay anime title. Its one thats very well know in the anime world for some reason, I wounder why....?

This magical fantasy anime looks pretty good, but the way they made the series makes you feel like that they are running out of materials and just trying to prolong the series. =P

The first part of the war characters and the 2nd are almost idential in many many ways, also as they ran out of ideas how to make characters. "Also I was hoping to see more Mr. Free Knight and his elve firend deedlit more but anyways... =/

Overall this is a fairly okay series, it has a really nice OP song which does seems to made quite an attraction when it came out. =)

For all those who liked magical fantasy anime theme titles, this one is for you. =)

Do not let the excellent opening animation and song fool you. This is a very lame duck anime. About the only thing worthy of note aside from the opening is the episode 1 and episode 3 or 6 (the episode where the Berserk takes care of business). After that the whole show slides right down here. I was not a huge fan of the OVA, but the TV show manages to pull one worse. As if the poor animation was not enough, the story reaches new lows in boredom. While the "Welcome to Lodoss Island" manages to provide mild amusment for the initial 14 or so episodes, takes a nose dive towards the end.

As some reviewers have readily stated, Record of Lodoss War: Chronicles of the Heroic Knight is best summed up as a fantasy novel made into an anime series. I haven't read much works of the fantasy genre, yet despite (or because of?) that, I enjoyed the twenty-seven episodes it is made of. I haven't seen the OVA to this date, so I can't give an opinion on the relationship between the two.

My first impression was slight amusement. The split screens, the spells cast by the warriors, the names of the characters shoved at the viewer and overall the beginning of the first episodes made me chuckle. Fortunately after getting familiar with this the actual story behind surfaced.

The only jarring problem was the ten year gap. Such a pause in the storyline could easily butcher other series, but CotHK pulled it off nicely. I was worried that the original characters I had learn to like would be replaced altogether by characters I couldn't relate with. The second set of people didn't really catch up to the first, but luckily the first set was involved in the events as well.

The story unravelled was a quite simple fantasy affair, with quests and whatnot. Not really innovative, but entertaining nonetheless. The character design was top notch; Deedlit and Parn are a perfect couple, and the series lacks bishônens which is a slight plus in my book. The opening theme is wonderful, unsurprisingly sung by Maaya Sakamoto and composed by Yôko Kanno.

What really separates the TV rendition of Lodoss War from other series was the little piece called "Welcome to Lodoss Island". It was absolutely hilarious. Maybe I haven't been overdosed with this sort of humour yet, but I found the comic relief a welcome pause between episodes. The story really flew by fluidly thanks to them. The early parts had Japanese puns people who don't know the language couldn't possibly get, but they weren't a continuing theme, thankfully.

To wrap up, recommended for all fantasy lovers, and for those who haven't got pretty much else to do and look for something that doesn't require too much thought but is still entertaining.

Fans of the Lodoss OVAs beware. While the OVAs where hacked apart story based on the novels, the TV series keeps more with the original novels. This will make for some confusion as a good portion of the OVAs is retold differently in the TV series. Past the initial confusion, Lodoss TV is a lot of fun, and reminds me of reading an epic fantasy novel series. The new characters introduced are likable, and I really enjoyed seeing the older characters and where they ended up. Quality anime for fantasy anime fans who can stand the story difference between the OVAs and TV series.

The series rewrites much of the story of the original OVA, but it in many ways are far better than it predeseccor. Characters personality is often changed and new characters are introduced. Especially is the sence of the time going by pretty neat (the series spans over several years). A must see for a fantasy fan, but in many ways the first half of the original OVA is need to enjoy this. The last couple of minutes in each episode is a review of what has just happened, presented by (of all things) superdeformed characters from the series, and in a rather childish way I might add.

One of my absolute alltime Favorites. It is cheap animated though. U find lots of scenes, wich schow only one picture in motion, but dhe drawing itself is superb. While the Story is somewhat predictable, it still manages to bind u onto the screen until all the series is over :)
The DvD version has one Drawback. Between every single episodes there is one little spot with "deformed charakters". Its is hghly funny, but it crashes the really outstanding athmosphere of Lodoss War totally. For that reason i would even rip my own version of Lodoss war to the Pc, and watch it without the minispots, and watch 'em sepertated later.
All in one i think its one of the best non-humoristic Fantasy Anime out there today.
Oh. And it has the best opening ever :P
