Record of Lodoss war is an OVA I had been interested in for a while. So I finally went out and bought it when the price dropped below $30. I must say it was a fairly decent show, the story was actually fairly good. And for fans of fantasy and action this will be a worthwile watch. To know more continue on.

This anime is a decent fantasy story that gets a bit cliche at times and shows its' age.

The animation is extremely cliche and is pretty bad all around. The villians all wear black and red, heroes wear white, blue, and brown; leaders of the good guys have beards while leaders of the villians are clean-shaven; leaders of the heroes look old and wise while leaders of the villians look young and cunning; the villians have evil eyes and sharp features while heroes have soft features with all-knowing eyes.

Also, there is a bevy of cliche things like stare-downs, every important figure wears heavy cloaks (even in the middle of battles!), all the important men are huge muscle-bound and broad-shouldered figures bigger than the horses they sit on, etc.

Also, the age of the anime is apparent; still frames abound, battle scenes arn't animated (mostly just flashes of light) at times, little detail, stoic backgrounds.

As to the soundtrack; I didn't enjoy any of the songs, and for the most part the random pop songs in the middle of the story kind of ruined a few scenes for me, especially near the end of the anime.

The story itself is interesting, but also cliche at times and contains a few plot holes. The plot twists were decent but never completely unexpected, and the ending was easy to see coming from a mile away. I wish the anime had been more realistic in this area; there isn't much poltical intrigue, strategy, or complexity.

One example of the incredible amount of cliche happenings in this anime is during a massive battle; in the middle of the battle the King decides to stop the battle to fight the opposing King, who agrees (even though he has an overwhelming advantage in numbers, has the enemy trapped, and is winning the battle) to fight one on one. Meanwhile, both armies watch the battle occur without interfering at all.

Also, we never find out what happened to the dark elves, why Deed seems to be the only high elf in Lodoss, what ever happens to Wood, and why the dragons were introduced at all.

As to the characters; they are all your typical fantasy characters: the tough, stout dwarf; the flighty, happy elf in tune with nature; the insecure young swordsman; the sly, cowardly theif; the dependable, bumbling priest; and the wise, knowedgeable sorcerer. Toss in the wise old King, the evil King, the "noble outlaw" King, and the evil Sorcereress and you've got yourself Fantasy Characters 101.

I didn't really enjoy any of the characters; Deed was the only one I had any semblence of caring for during the series, and even that was minimal.

However, despite being cliche and not very enjoyable, they were developed well for the most part. Parn and Deed's relationship was well developed, motivations for each of the characters was established during the series, and for a 13 part series each was given quite a bit of screentime.

I wouldn't reccomend this series to anyone who has seen decent fantasy series before or read a fantasy novel or watched a fantasy movie. Also, for those who dislike cliche series in general, this series is not for you.

Overall, while I think it is technically an below average series, I didn't get any enjoyment out of watching it. I plan on watching Record of Lodoss War's later incarnations soon, hopefully they will be better than this anime.

ROL sets the standard on what we call "good fantasy anime." Unfortunately, I have not seen anything better except for Berserk. Considering this is over 15 years old.. thats just sad.

Animation - For 1990, it was merely average. It's clear that they had a small budget. The numerous fancy colors that equates to sword fighting gets old quite quickly.

Sound - Definately has an eighties pop culture feel but its actually really good from those standards.

Story - A great story through and through. Very intricately woven together and if any of you reading this ever played any tactics games or final fantasy tactics you can see where they get their ideas....

Character - Over 13 episodes they flesh them out well. After its over though, we want more of them since things are left quite open. Lots of emotions and its clear that fleshing out the characters was important to the the creators.

Value - The complete set is 50 bucks in America, I bought mine for half price brand new, so 25. It was worth it. However.. it clearly shows its age so I dont know if its worth 50 to anyone else.

Enjoyment - It starts off slow for a few episodes, then it gets better. The 2nd DVD is packed with action. I only wish they remake this thing because even though I have no problem with older anime and the crappy animation that follows them, I do have a problem when its this bad.. I mean really. Out of 13 episodes.. you are mostly watching frozen animation cells... even more then berserk!

To me, it all seemed a bit mindless and unoriginal. Ironically, it's one of teh best fantasy animes I've seen, or rather, I should say: the quality of fantasy animes are low. They're usually incredibly boring and unoriginal, the two words also covers the characters in any fantasy anime I can think of. At least this is mediocre. It has no real serious flaws, it's just plain mediocre. All right, Karla and the gods gets a bit annoying, but the action scenes work ok. There is really nothing else to say about this. There were no fantastic ideas here, but apparently the makers realized this, and didn't try something they shouldn't have.

The anime is like the Lord of the Rings type. However, they do not used annoying kids to run the plot.

What I going to said is bold but is the true; I enjoy this anime more than Lords of the Rings movies. However, I understand that Lords of the Rings is an Icon and all of that but I did not get the punch, other that the super visuals FXs. Lodoss War is even darker, mature audience oriented, better plot and had better characters.

This is one of those series not too recognize but is very good. I like the character development of the main character because goes little by little improving his fighting skills. In my opinion, one of the best characters in anime history appears here in this anime, his name is Ashram WOW! He isn’t that type of bad guy that you hate; he fights for his believes. His uses neat dark knight armor and he later possess the sword called soul crusher the rest you has to see it for your self…... This is by all means and adventure series.

I have the OST. The music is great but …so that you know, it is not J-pop or rock it is more like classic music for movies.

I will never, ever, understand why this anime is rated so low from other anime reviewers.

Record of Lodoss war is by now probably a "classic". First time I saw it was around three years ago and back then I didnt really like it at all, not enought to rate it or watch it a second time. But now I gave it another chance and its actually quite good, actually very good.

Its hard to explain but somehow it just remains in your mind all the time, maybe its just my weakness towards elven babes or maybe this anime really is a high class one.

With the exception of recent film version of Tolkien saga, there is no good non-anime fantasy film or TV series. When I first saw Lodoss, I was amazed - it was the first time I saw excellent fantasy - saw, not read. Good story (well, as far as fantasy stories go :> - you know what they say - Tolkien invented fantasy and it hasn't chaged since :>), good music (love the intro/ending)... A good anime. Perhaps the best serious heroic fantasy genre anime there is. A note: for a fantasy comedy in Lodoss setting try Magic Soldier Louie.

ONE solid anime. Anime with a great feeling for RPG fan. It really looks like a show out of a games, it have races, job, and experiance points. Althou it doesn't show like HP or MP but you will feel through it. Party with 5 doesn't end with just that, some people die with honor to reach their goal then other people come up from the showdow and be the main chars.

Story about Evil, gods, and human are cliche. You see these stuff everywhere but few will have these good combination and not overuse about the use of power and magic. There's also a history trace back 500 years or even go beyond b4 humankind rules the world. We'll also see heros from 500 years ago still alive and kicking others butt.

Toward the end, romance get stronger between Deed and Parn. Parn finally relise that's there's only one girl(well another one was taken obviously) in the show and he have to like her(no choice). And yea, he finally love her and got us a happy ending for ova series. WTG! Parn.

As an ex-Gamer of AD&D i'm a little biased with my opinions, but we're all a little personal in our views!

The story starts with a bang (james bond-like right into the action), in fact it's actually one of the middle episodes. Once it finally gets started it begins quite slowly, as all the characters have to be introduced. The story is relatively straight forward to begin with and then gets gradually more complex. Villians change (Beld, Karla, Wagnard) as does the heroes objectives and allies. What begins as a simplistic good versus evil conflict then changes to a meditation on the needlessness of war, whether it be unification by good or conquest by evil the end result is always the same, innocents die. This particularly apt today, as it will always be. However, after all this it then ends with a straight good vs evil fight when parn must rescue deedlit, gripping thought it is this is a bit dull.

For me the characters, story etc are all excellent and very reminiscent of many old RP games (the group itself is the ideal RP group), but the animation and some of the music is rather annoying. Lots of frames are repeated over and over. Some characters have little or no animation. But considering it's 15 years old, that's not too bad.

I really like this anime, but like i said i'm biased.

Lodoss is an anime with great focus and potential but it falls into the category that offers too little heart to care about the characters and the plot. It's a fantasy story with D&D elements, but even a fantasy world set by a Dungeon Master in a session with a group of friends is more rich and inventive than the world of Lodoss that we see in this anime version.

This version for straigth to video is animated by Nobuteru Yuuki. Yuuki is a great artist, his characters are well done specially the elven girls, but It looks that was the only thing he cared about. Deedit, Pirotess and Karla (with the priestess' body) are the most powerful and interesting characters in the whole 13 episodes.

I liked Lodoss, sort of. I think that the project to pass this story to the screen not received too much imagination or most important: Hearth.

Once long ago a great war raged between the Goddess of Creation and the Goddess of Destruction, tearing the land asunder. The aftermath of this epic battle destroyed both Goddesses and created the accursed land, Lodoss. As evil attempts to raise up once again, a young warrior named Parn begins his epic quest.

For fantasy and role playing buffs, Record of Lodoss war is an absolutely brilliant tale. The sheer scope of the story and strength of the characters almost makes Lord of the Rings seem like a short story. Featuring warriors, sages, priests, thieves, berserkers, death knights, holy knights, kings, dark elves, high elves, dwarves, ancient dragons, demons, and more, Record of Lodoss war is practically an encyclopedia of fantasy.

Like most good adventures, the story of Lodoss starts off simple, uncomplicated. Great care is taken in introducing the main characters and not rushing things along, while keeping the viewer interested with action and story. Amazing character growth and unimaginable battles with friends and foes of the greatest legends await our heroes, but we get to know them in their ordinary lives. In this way and many others, Lodoss War strives to capture the epic grandeur of fantasy Role Playing Games in animated form, and succeeds well.

The strength of the characters in Lodoss war is one of it's greatest assets. Parn is a great lead character all around and really serves to anchor the story and put things into perspective. He possesses no tricks, magic, hidden powers, or other gimmicks, but his sheer will, his friends, and his faith as a knight drives his character to amazing heights as a warrior regardless. He is the center piece of the amazing cast, the common thread that binds them. Deedlit is an absolutely excellent female lead, playing wonderfully off Parn's personality. She's easily one of the best elves to ever grace the screen, and an obvious fan favorite.

The artwork throughout Lodoss is simply stunning, amazing works of fantasy art on the highest scales. Unfortunately though, while the art itself is stunning, the animation hasn't aged quite as well over the years. There's far more still frames than I'd like, and it certainly looks aged overall. Regardless, it's quite a beautiful work that no fantasy fan should miss. This is a classic of the genre.

Here's the thing. It's pretty. It has great characters. Nothing gets developed which makes it nothing near a fantasy epic and does no justice to the D&D of Japan at the time. Watching this is like watching a nice painting of what fantasy looks like. That's all.

Another fantasy anime which you find everywhere, some elves, dwarves orcs and other supernatural things put together with a nice story, but then again i cant get enough of fantasy.

I didnt really like the first couple of eps, but once the story started to take place it got me hooked.

The animation is done well considering it was animated 1990, as a sidenote the opening theme is great.

As fan of most things fantasy I cannot claim to be in any way impartial, so be warned. If thy hates any and all things akin to Lord of the Rings or Dungeons and Dragons flee now or forver be angry.

Well as a fan of fantasy I loved it all, except the music.

The animation was dated to say the least, but considering the fact that this was made many moons ago it was good for its time.

The music ranged from decent to absolute garbage. My main point of contention is that bloody battle theme that plays over and over again. It's the kind of music one would play to clear a room.

The story was unique for anime, but you can readily see the influences of other works. Again I am not complaing that it was boring, rather I very much enjoyed it. My only complaint is that a certain stout bearded fellow dies...

If you can watch old animes that have dated animation and love fantasy then this may be worth one's time. If you can only stomach the latest animation then stand clear and give a wide berth. (I can understand with todays newfangled techniques of animation that have you young'uns dropping your jaws, its no wonder many have of you have the attention span of a Troll ;)

-'ere we go...

I LOVE ELVES why because I saw Record of the Lodoss Wars. Sure it's old but if anime was only about pretty pictures Yugioh would be a good series. Record of the Lodoss follows the traditional RPG style in which the select group of heroes, elf mage, human and dwarf fighter, plus a priest. What makes this show special is that interaction between the characters throughout the series all I could hope for was that Parn and Deedlit remain together. One of my favorite scenes is when the dwarf offers Deedlit wine at the ball. This animation really brings the characters to life

Quite average anime. Animation is good (Manga Corps), and the themes are great too. However, the story is kinda rushed and is not very deep instead, and the characters are just repetition of another fantasy genre (JRR Tolkien's genre).
Overall, this anime is not very enjoyable due to the fact that it can't build emotion to the watcher, or urge the watcher to see more episodes.

If you are a fantasylover, and havent seen this one, you need to get it right now, great OVA with great individual characters with their very own personalities. The story is the basic fantasy story, however there is some applications that makes this one even better and more enjoyable.

Well this series is one of the first animes i watched, so i'll always say it is one of the best... :p
I liked very much, it has a very nice animation, the sound is good (i like the initial and final musics a lot). Spite the story isn't really strong the anime hold on well and can be very entertaining. It's charachters are very charismatic and 'human', given the series a something else i like...
well that's it... :p

I thought, at first, that this was your definative average anime. Thats what I thought as I was watching it - but as I write this review, I realize that there were a few things that were below average.

The animation was certainly not the greatest, even though its old It still just didnt do it for me. At the end, they seemed to think that flashes of light and watching ground explode would make up for a fight scene that could have been done better.

The sound was average. Some of the themes were alright, but, Im not blown over either. In fact, I can't really recall a single theme ...even the opening. Not to say that it was bad, just not memerable enough.

Im always partial to the fantasy-type stories. Heroic Knight runs around and saves the land. Basically it, and kind of generic in some respects. However, it was still an enjoyable story for the year it was made (it certainly doesnt stand up to 12 kingdoms, for example).

The characters...were fair. I'd hate to use the words generic again, especially since it doesnt seem fair to the year it was produced. Remember, this came up in 1990, so it CREATED alot of the present-day generic themes and characters...back then it could have been considered original. Of course, I didnt review it in 1990 and have to take everything ive seen to this point into account. Parn is your typical hero of an average action/fantasy anime - nothing really worth mentioning.

I saw these on dvd - I must say that the subs weren't bad either, as well as the subtitles. In that respect though, not enough extras.

Despite the mediocreness, I still had a fairly enjoyable time watching this. The fantasy buff in me was able to kick in and stick with it. If youre not a big fantasy fan, though, I can't say that I reccomend you sit through this.
