A good adaptation of the "Little Mermaid" tale that doesnt seem to be very popular thanks to the Disney adaptation. But here the mermaids do not wear bras as in the Disney version and their tits are actually shown. I wonder who would dare today design mermaids that way in an animated feature for children.

Despite the lack in animation it has very good direction in some moments and the ending is much better than the Disney version to which this movie must have inspired in some scenes, just as Kimba inspired the Lion King (not that the Japanese do not steal ideas themselves).

The character design of the main mermaid and the witch is very good but many of rest look like caricatures. The background settings, especially those underwater are of high quality even if the animation lacks a lot in some scenes.

It features both comedy, romance and drama and it mixes those ingredients very well to make it a memorable experience for those lucky enough to have watched it on cinema 30 years ago or in television while they were children.

If you like to watch not heavily edited animated adaptation of fairy tales and especially of HC Anderssen and also miss the lyricism of the 70s anime, give this movie a look.
