| There are very few anime series that have come out in the past twenty years which focus entirely on romance, comedy, character development and are long in length. Maison Ikkoku is one such anime – at 96 episodes long, it is the only anime I know of such length which focuses on just two characters throughout its run. In case you like your story to focus on just two characters who start out as acquaintances and end up us lovers undergoing several tribulations over a long span of time – Maison Ikkoku is a series that should be on your see list since it guarantees to entertain.

| Maison Ikkoku is a prime example of what anime should be. It is certainly an older anime, but that isn't a bad thing. In fact, I actually prefer older ones compared to this new generation of anime. Maison Ikkoku does not use petty things animation, ecchi/subjective content, violence, or anything of the sort to lure you in. It is a romantic comedy that has its twists and turns, and you will definitely get hooked. It was as if I was part of the family, the life they were living. I felt all the hardships as if I were there. While this may sound a bit awkward and silly, this anime has touched my heart in a way no other has.
tl;dr This anime is perfect for what it is. An easy-going comedic romancy anime that will certainly not disappoint.

| This anime is rather old, actually the anime is the same age as me so I don't know if I should call it old, yet regardless of age the anime is full of richly detailed characters and a wonderfully written story line. You can see where other anime have drawn from this one in terms of characters and plot. The building and main character, Yusaku Godai, seem to be the early versions of Love Hina's Keitaro. I would happily recommend this to any anime fan.

| I tried to pick up this series because of it's really high ratings and previous reviews, and I have come to the conclusion that this anime is seriously overrated. When you watch this series, you might not give it the same low score that I am, but I'm sure the show doesn't deserve the ridiculously high ratings others previously did. I'd also like to mention that the fansub by Tenchi Domain for Maison Ikkoku is horrible. A lot of dialogue is not subtitled and some of the subs are just plain wrong.
This is an 80's anime, so the animation can't be compared to anything now. I'd give the animation probably an 8-9 if comparing it to other 80's anime and considering it's age. I gave it a low score more to reflect my overall score for this series, and the animation is still indeed old.
The sound is a 5, and just like my animation score it's probably more to reflect my overall score and the age.
The story and characters are really what it's about, and this is the reason why the series receives such a low score from me. Whoever says the romance in the story is realistic is completely wrong or ignorant or confused. The two main characters are a beautiful girl with a wife's nature that sometimes acts a little strange, but is otherwise a really great catch. Then you have a guy with no qualities except doing some nice things sometimes. The guy is pretty pathetic and part of the comedy is his pervertedness. His pervertedness especially in the beginning of the series really kills the romance and the realism of it completely. The other supporting characters are pretty interfering, but some might say it's supposed to help the romance develop. The supporting cast are there mainly for comedy, but I didn't find them very funny at all. I'll try to quickly summarize the main plot again.
The guy tries to win over a beautiful girl that still lingers on her dead husband. The guy is pretty pathetic except for the fact that he actively pursues her. Another guy and girl go after the main couple respectively and complicate things developing the relationship between this pathetic guy and beautiful girl. More complications happen, the beautiful girl is stubborn, the main guy remains pretty pathetic throughout the series.
The main pair reminded me a lot like Kimagure Orange Road, which featured another guy and girl romance I really couldn't stand watching. I can't stand watching a wimp with no real redeeming qualities romance a beautiful girl that is supposedly sought by many others. I think the anime ends well but it's kind of bleh throughout the series.
You can try to give this a try. It's a romance. It's not realistic. Maybe the comedy will appeal to you. I didn't like it much.

| This is quite possibly the best love/romance anime series I have ever seen. I was thoroughly surprised since I had attempted to start this series about 5 times (couldn't get passed the first episode - nothing special to me), but I'm glad I stuck with it. Each of the 96 episodes is fun to watch, and will leave you smiling and wanting more. The characters have their own unique qualities and quirks, so there is never a dull moment (except maybe the one about Yotsuya's egg...).
I found the character interactions and relationships to be Maison Ikkoku's strongest point. Every little event is entertaining and it is simply fun and heartwarming to see Kyoko deny her feelings for Godai, but actually fall for him little by little. (I was thoroughly surprised when she played the "close your eyes" trick on Godai. That episode was worth watching multiple times!)
Every anime fan should be exposed to something as great as Maison Ikkoku. It's been said to have one of the best and most satisfying endings of all time, and I absolutely agree. I strongly recommend this series. The 80s style animation may deter you from watching it, but don't judge it until after you've given a chance or two. Or 5. I really enjoyed this series. I'm sure you'll like it too.

| It's time to review another great Rumiko Takahashi creation called Maison Ikkoku, the best romance anime. This is the most unique in all of her works as it is realistic, there are no special powers, no fighting, no aliens, no weird stuffs and no one turns into a girl or an animal when splashed with cold water.
I had a great time watching it, but still it wasn't able to beat Ranma 1/2 but I admit Maison Ikkoku is really good. MI has a total of 96 eps, it's pretty long but I didn't get bored, and I feel that it's just like a short series and not a long one, time went by so fast while I was watching this, which is unusual because most of the time it makes me sleepy when I watch on youtube (especially KgNE) but in MI, I ddn't notice the passing of time, which is the proof of how much I enjoyed it. Anyway, enough with my nonsense. Here's the synopsis.
Yuhasaku Godai is a ronin (a student who failed the college entrance exam) who lives in a run-down apartment called Maison Ikkoku. One day, a new apartment manager arrived and started to live with them. She is Kyoko Otonashi, a recently widowed woman. Godai fell in love with her and he does his best to enter college then graduate so he can get a steady job so one day he can propose to her. The problem is he's always bugged by his neighbors by partying in his room every night, how will he finish his studies with that kind of situation?

| I had little expectations when I first got into Maison Ikkoku. I was honestly expecting another bland and incomplete Takahashi series, but I was suprised as just how well crafted and developed the romance of this series is. It's taken little by little, step by step at establishing a meaningful and very memorable romantic story.
Maison Ikkoku still has a lot of signature Takahashi elements like the episodic nature and outlandishly comical characters and misunderstandings, but the heart of the anime is definitely romance. In fact, all the misunderstandings in the story help only to maintain the innocence of the romance as they serve as a good cause for jealousy but without any of the sin. This is definitely one of the best romantic comedies you'll have the pleasure of seeing.
It's a long series but it's not pointless. A bit redundant at times but overall is a very memorable experience, especially if you care for romantic stories like I do. As for presentation, even though it was made in the 80's, the animation still looks pretty good today. Actually, it's one of the better looking classic anime in the market right now. The music is typical 80's JPop/Ballads so it's nothing special in that regard.
Solid anime, and even greater romantic story. With such a wonderful ending, I don't think I can stress enough as just how good this anime is. Get it. Those boxsets are actually a very good value.

| The attention to detail in this anime is astounding, from environments to nature such as flowers, fruits, animals to characters it could compete with many of todays animes.Enough said on that.
Sound is good to very good. There were several opening and ending themes. My favorites were the first opening and second ending themes.
Its a drama, romance, comedy and i'd like to say it is most af all in "Relationship" category.
All of the characters have their own charms, and i really liked their personalities. The dog (Soichiro) looks so funny and has a "unique" bark, hehe.
Then theres three tenants besides Godai, and they are all heavy drinkers. Yotsuya stands out as a strange man, who quotes or creates haiku poems at random.
One day Kyoko arrives to be the new manager/superintendant at "Maison Ikkoku" (aka run down old wooden house). Godai is just an aspiring college student at that time, and this is mostly a story about his struggles in the adult life.
I sometimes admired how creative and smart the dialogues were. I found the very direct dialouges of Kozue or Yagami to be impressively constructed.
Theres many twists and turns in the story and i was a bit annoyed by that.. basically the main plot (Kyoko and Godai's love) was often pushed aside. I honestly almost gave up on this anime because of how extremely unlucky Godai was:many times whatever could go wrong, went horribly wrong (a good strategy for complicating matters, but it sort of got old).
But dont give up people. I think that this anime is a great love story. When things get romantic, you'll know it was worthwhile.
Overall its a must watch.A more serious and realistic story from Rumiko Takahashi- compared to Ranma or Urusei Yatsura. Awesome animation, very good story and pretty funny at times.

| Animation is old. Its 1986...but a good anime isn't just about how good it looks.
Sound effects and music matches the story well. At times its wacky fitting the funny scenes and sometimes its sad matching the love story. Really nice.
Story amazing. There is many hidden messages, symbolizm, and meanings that make you think. Its about a man living in a boarding house with his wacky neighbors. Then he found this girl and fell in love but she has a complicated past where it get more complicated as they live in the same boarding house. Ending really made me happy. Great ending.
Loved every single character. From his wacky neighers to the main characters rival in love.
Overall i really enjoyed it as a comedy/love story.

| Though I've only been watching anime for about a year, Maison Ikkoku has been the most enjoyable one for me (and the most addictive). I've watched various titles, consisting of Inuyasha (also by Rumiko Takahashi, though definitely not as good as MI), Full Metal Alchemist, Full Moon wo Sagashite, Ranma 1/2, Hunter x Hunter, Midori no Hibi, KGNE, Air, Studio Ghibli movies, etc. In my opinion, Maison Ikkoku shines above them all.
Maison Ikkoku is a beautiful story about a young man (college wannabe who gets into a 3rd rate college) named Yuusaku Godai who lives in a run-down apartment house, Ikkoku-kan. One day, he meets and falls in love with the new apartment manager (kanrinin-san), a beautiful young widow named Kyoko Otonashi. The story of the anime entails the development of their relationship, from when they first met to when and how they eventually get together. It also focuses on the crazy happenings at Ikkoku-kan due to the unique idiosyncratic tenants who cause trouble for Godai-san.
The characters are very developed. For instance, some of the many fillers in the first half of the anime are constructive fillers -- they're there to develop the tenant characters. Godai and Kyoko's characters are obviously the most developed. We see Godai when he is a 20 year old man in college and witness his life as he goes from having part-time jobs to finally securing a career. Kyoko's character is very developed because we get to hear her thoughts every now and then and sometimes the episodes focus mainly on her so that it seems as if she and Godai have interchanged the role of the main character, which overall heightens the character development in this anime. Moreover, characters like Mitaka-san and Akemi-san also have very developed characters. I have definitely grown to love each and every character.
The animation is this anime is definitely old, considering it's 1986 BUT it is nevertheless very beautiful and detailed. It is a perfect depiction of every day life.
The music definitely portrays the emotions and tone of the anime well. I've grown to love the romantic style of the '80s music. I believe the music is an essential aspect of this anime.
The re-watch value is very high. I've re-watched a countless number of episodes and they get better every time. I've learned to appreciate the nostalgic atmosphere of the early episodes after having watched the whole thing. It's like I've watched everyone grow up.
Overall, Maison Ikkoku is touching, funny, and unique. It is very deserving of its classic status. I feel that it is also very underrated because so many people haven't even heard of this series. It is definitely like many people say, a complete masterpiece. A reason why it is THE best romance anime for me is because the romance portrayed here is very serious and mature, the way I believe a romance should be depicted. (Unlike all that immature fighting in Ranma 1/2 and that indecisiveness and inconclusion in Inuyasha)
So if you are a "romantic" and also enjoy Takahashi's witty and funny storytelling style, this anime is a MUST-SEE. I can't praise this anime enough. I love it so much. It's been weeks since I finished and I'm still hooked.
HIGHLY HIGHLY recommended, unless you don't like comedy or romance. Or if you watch all action/horror.

| This is an older but extremely well done anime. While I was watching all 96 episodes, I was not bored by a single one. The story focuses on the relationship between college ronin/student Godai and Kyoko. The story this complex and well done is hard to describe in few words. It's a masterpiece. Everything flows naturally and is not rushed. The story is complex but you never lose interest to keep watching. The OST is also incredible. Anyways, stop reading my review and start with watching the series. Every minute you wait you are wasting your life :)

| If it was possible to give an anime an 11 out of 10 in the character category, this one would get it. Maison Ikkoku is about a group of people dealing with the circumstances life has given them, especially the three love-triangle partipants, Kyoko, Mitaka, and Godai, all three of whom never really grew up. Maison Ikkoku also boasts my absolute favorite character from all of animedom, Yotsuya-san, a haiku-spouting man of mysterious employment whose passions in life are drinking and toying with Godai.
This anime is truly deserving of its "classic" status, and I'm not sure has yet been topped in its genre.

| "Maison Ikkoku?" -- is likely to be your initial response to this masterpiece, and that, in itself, is quite tragic.
Why is it tragic? Well, first of all, this, in my opinion, is the epitome of the "romance" genre; a story so endearing that it will leave you with a profound sense of loss upon its completion.
You will watch the characters grow up and mature before your very own eyes. Take Godai-san for example: he starts off as a downtrodden, capricious student, often the unwilling target of other residents' jokes and pranks, but, towards the end of the series, he blossoms into a respectable member of society; one worthy of praise.
One of Takahashi Rumiko's earlier works, Maison Ikkoku set a precedent for others to follow.
10/10 (as close to perfection as possible)

| If you're looking for a long, enjoyable, extremely addicting anime, this would have to be the one.
The animation if well done, fully portrays the gentle style of Rumiko Takahashi.
The soundtrack is full of styles of music that I personally prefer, and pretty much everything they play in the anime fits the mood quite nicely.
The story and the characters are usually what make or break an anime, and in the case of Maison Ikkoku, the author really couldn't have done a better job. The anime features a deep and long winding journey to reach true love. The anime is full of memorible quotes and has an elaborate 6 episode ending to close off all loose ends.
If you're looking for the ultimate feel-good anime, this would be the one for you. This was one of the best romantic comedies of it's time, and that fact may hold true even now.

| I really loved this series, but I thought that the manga was a little better. Although, this is probably one of my first one that I‘ve seen, it‘s still not bad. I thought that this one was actually a great drama series, compared to some of today‘s shoujo genre. Not many are involved with a good concept of a sappy college student, and downfalls that follow with him. And his crush with his tenant was really charmful. I think that many of the side characters who were in that apartment were absolutely hilarious, especially that old lady Ichinose who drinks a lot. And the realism of this story that brings the relationship between Yusaku and Kyoko, which had some great moments from most of the events were nicely given a fine perception of their life. Although I still think that the animation and sound value were out-dated, it hasn’t really affected my viewing on it at all. Very nicely done for an aging one. Overall, it really has a great re-watch value and I might want to see it again sometime. I would gladly recommend this to anyone.

| Maison Ikkoku is always near the top of my best anime list. Sure, parts of the story have to be seen to be believed, and even then defy reality, but in the end you really care about the characters. These are the kind of characters that stay with you long after the story is over. Done completely in hand-drawn animation, Maison Ikkoku had to rely on a good premise and an engaging story to keep people involved, not some flashy CG effects. Godai, Kyoko, and all the others seem like real people, and by the time it ends, you wish it wouldn't. Animation and sound are typical for its age, but the artwork can be stunningly beautfiul at times. Overall, it's a great show that will keep you glued to the screen until the very end - you want to know that it all works out. I can't recommend it enough.

| The first 7 episodes were really slow for me and I was having my doubts about this series, whether it was even worth watching further or not.
But after it started picking up and relationships between everyone started picking up, I really started to enjoy it. The other tenants in Ikkoku-kan weren't as big part of the story anymore and it started to become the hilarious and emotional episodes that I had hoped to watch.
However, around episode 29, there were way too many filler episodes. Unlike that of KoR where some familiars made some story improvements, these fillers are pointless.
Around episode 65, the anime really sky rockets. There is a change in Kyoko and Godai's relationship. Furthermore, another cute high school girl character comes into play! Very enjoyable at these episodes.
This truly is a great anime in terms of jokes, love relations, character at times, and basically everything you are looking for in a love triangle anime.
In comparsion to Kimagure Orange Road, I feel that although the story basis of Maison Ikkoku maybe be more appealing, but for KOR ->> the animation is better for KOR over M.I. ( i guess u need to get used to it for both of them) , furthermore, the characters feel stronger in KOR, they stand out a lot. But in MI, there is a larger sense of humbleness and everything, which is a enjoyable difference!
Either way, its worth watching this, its definitely a change of pace, just get used to the first few episodes and you'll not regret it.
More importantly, there seems to be a really strong relationship between Kyoko and Yusaku, none of the whimsical stuff which can get annoying!
Note: to put it simply.... Maison Ikkoku is more of an adult love while Kimagure Orange Road starts from middle school and goes up from there.
Note 2: I upgraded the animation rating, it really isn't bad, just takes getting used to and things will go smoothly for ya, on the contrary, it has decent attention to detail.
Note 3: I downgraded the story... this movie just doesnt have as strong an emotional impact on me. Its too repetitive. Same things over and over. Only the last 16 episodes really do anything. I guess its more realistic, since she is a Widow after all and has to get over her feelings, but... not very impressive to me. The ending wasn't that great either... I didn't feel such a strong sense of resolution.

| One of Rumiko Takahashi's best, for sure. But it was really long, too long to justify even character of story development. I know two fans personally who dub this the best anime ever. The premise is good and it really is one of the best as far as adult dramas go. But really, too long. Many fine moments in between. But sadly, if Dragon Ball drags action scenes, MI drags dramatic developments. Honestly. The longest I've seen drag out.

| WOW!! This is the best series there is (together with GTO)! I just finished the last episode and boy have I ever felt this connected with the characters? Guess it kinda comes with a 96 episode series but this is much more so than other series of that lenght. This is the ultimate Romance/Comedy series where all of today's dito borrow one or more ideas. This is a m u s t see for everyone who is fund of anime, and esp. so if romance or comedy is a fav. genre. But now that all episodes and the movie is over I feel sad, like parting with a long known friend or something. I cannot enough stress how good this is, see it or miss out on the best anime has to offer!
While the animation and sound is not perfect they get a high grade for their perfect depiction of the 80's in ep 24 they have Gilbert O'Sullivan songs as op and end themes and it's so bloody nice it's almost a crime :)
