It has been a long, long time since I got off my ass and reviewed something. Don't get me wrong, I have watched a fair bit (expect a fairly steady influx of reviews in the next couple of days) but this, Barefoot Gen 2, has been the biggest wall I have had to overcome. It isn't bad, but it is so decidedly mediocre that I have little to say about it.

Takes place three years after the events in Barefoot Gen where Gen, his adopted brother and his mother try to live in the post-atomic war times. Here, we their day to day life as they struggle to make a living, make money, take care of their mother, try to live a quasi-normal life and encounter all sorts of natural hardships along the way. Barefoot Gen 2 is most impressive in the sense that it tells a very moving story that although predictable, makes quite an impact. Furthermore, despite all the hardships that

Compared to Barefoot Gen 1, the sequel is much better in nearly all aspects. Animation, sound, character development, scenarios, story... everything is much more impacting and interesting. We meet this crowd of homeless children who rather live their own life together than live in the shelter of an orphanage and Gen and Ryouta soon become caught up in their activites trying to make a living for their sick mother, who has radioactive damage to her internal organs. Also compared to Barefoot Gen 1, the sequel tells more of a humanistic side of the story instead of a purely horror political message of the aftermath of the war. In Barefoot Gen 1, we see the huge transformation of happy life to desolation, poverty and destruction. In Barefoot Gen 2, we begin to see a glimpse of hopeful spirit emboded in Gen that strives to re-build a better Japan - a sort of "in your face, we're going to live and improve ourselves for a better tomorrow" type message.

Overall, I was quite moved and impressed by this movie. While the animation in the original severely turned me off, the animation in this one was quite nice. Furthermore, there is quite a variety of characters in this movie that help tell the moving story of troubled times. Of course, being the historical type of movie that it is, there are severe limitations in the amount of development of story and characters, but nevertheless it truly evoked a feeling of deep sympathy and empathy for all the suffering in the movie. Yet, at the end I also felt a fresh feeling of rejuvanation.
