Impotence: the anime.

That's all there is to Evangelion. It's a show about a teenage boy who has to become a mecha pilot. Only he's a nervous wreck with low self esteem, and he's bad at piloting.

He's also going through puberty, and is sexually frustrated. He's interested in some girls, the horrible emasculating Asuka and zombie-like Rei. However, they are not interested in him. He fails to connect with them on an emotional level.

Impotence is a theme here, this guy can't handle action well in his mecha, and he can't handle talking to girls.

This was interesting back in the 90s, because it was a deconstruction of anime. Take Gundam or Macross, and remove the romance or heroic action, and you get this. Yes, that had potential to be something special. It's certainly memorable. But ultimately... not a good thing.

History will show those older shows like Gundam, Macross, or even Mazinger Z are still more influential to the genre than Evangelion is. Nobody wants to make a show about a kid who can't pilot or connect emotionally with people. It was done once, and that's enough.

Yes, the show has good animation, music, voice acting, and is well directed in general. I love the theme song. Also, there is one really likable character, Misato. And Kaji's pretty nice too. And I do like PenPen the penguin.

Pretty much, Evangelion is a unique show that starts out interesting, if only for how depressing and different it is. Unfortunately, there is no light at the end of the tunnel, and all we get is a big pile of unsatisfying impotence.

NGE is what originally got me hooked on anime, and I recently decided to watch the whole series again.

It really is not possible to make a decent review of this without including the End of Evangelion anime as well, as is finishes the series of in a decent way. The actual two last episodes in this series (not to mention Death & rebirth, which you should avoid), are meaningless without watching "End of EVA".

Overall, this is a great anime. Deep and philosophical with awsome characters and graphics. Too bad there is too much still pictures in it, though.

Ok, so let us all jump back to 1995 so that I may critique this anime with what it deserves. Obviously, I refuse to count the original final episodes(25-26) as true episodes. End of Evangelion will take those episodes' place Not Anno's fault that people are afraid of seeing their own faults on tv. Anyway, Lets get to the review.

I had heard nothing but good things about Eva, and for the most part I was not disappointed. The plot moved along well, the story was intriguing, and I found that I just had to know what was going to happen next. Characters were added as the series continued, contributing to the overall balance of the show. However, I was somewhat disappointed in the character development of some of the main characters. They didn't seem to change much from beginning to end, but overall a worthwhile anime.

ive seen this a long time ago since i was in grade school, but even until now, eva is still my favorite among the rest. im not really joining in the fanservice stuff its just that this anime is really good as what the critics said. animation is just right for its time, but escaflowne has better animation even though they were both aired in the same year. the fight scenes are not boring because the series tried to make the fight scenes with the angels different on each enemy(3rd self-destructed, 4th stabbed, 5th shot with huge rifle, 6th blasted with cannons, etc.) as compared to most mecha animes who have repetitive fights scenes. what really is so different is how the director visually presented this series, it was like nothing ever seen before in its time, it was so weird that you might even ask yourself "is the director insane?", but anno did admit that he was having a depression while making this. the mecha(?) design is good, simple, but astounding as compared to gundam's bulky robots, eva looks more flexible and mobile without the unnecessary body kits(like a car eh?).

the sounds used here is pretty different compared to the usual anime soundtracks from j-pop or j-rock, they actually used english songs and orchestra music like escaflowne does. so if youre not interested in classical music, you wont appreciate eva soundtracks.

when i watched the 1st episode i thought to myself "this doesnt have an original story line, its the same as the previous mecha animes about saving the world from monsters or aliens again", or so i thought, but when they were saying "angels", i was a bit surprised that they called monsters angels, i became curious, not only that, lots of questions came into my mind just after watching the first episode like why did the robot gone berserk?, how can a robot regenerate itself?, why is the pilot feeling the attacks of the angel?, how come it moved on its own in order to protect shinji?, how come the robot has eyes? etc. so you have no choice but to watch the whole series to understand the mysteries of evangelion(although after watching the series and the movies, i still dont understand some of it).

eva actually has 2 stories: 1 about evangelion in general and the other is about ikari shinji. among all the characters, shinji is the main focus here, and i must admit hes not a very likable character because hes not like an anime character, more like a real human being with weakness, wants, needs, questions, etc., but not only shinji, most of the characters are like real humans as well as if youre not watching an anime but reality from an audience's point of view(like a reality show only not real).

about the bad part, the ending is not that good as the series ended without a real conclusion of everything, but thats what i thought, but actually eva has 2 endings: 1 in the series and another in the movie. in series, the ending is about the human instrumentality project, it already started without even showing how it started. the other ending is in the movie and here it is shown how the human instrumentality really happened, which ever you choose from them, the ending is pretty much the same anyway: shinji refused the human instrumentality.

overall, i really enjoyed this series, eva has really revolutionized anime industry to a whole new level by going beyond the conventional and popular among audience, making itself as a pioneer of anime revolution for years to come and making itself also as a historical reference for those who want to enter and try the anime production industry.

Look, I love what Eva did for anime. As far as I know, it was the first of the mystic robot series (yet another branch of the giant robot genre) and I am absolutely grateful for that. And when I first watched this series, I loved it and was even willing to forgive that terrible and I mean terrible ending. But, afterwords, I only really wanted to go back and watch episodes of the first half of the series. This is because the series gets worse and worse from episode 13 on until it finally hits the last few eps and totally descends into crayons and epileptic seizures. It's like it was getting so bad that the creators retreated into their own subconsciousnesses to avoid experiencing the act of creating an ending for this crap.

Also, all or the references to Judeo-Christian mysticism in this (like those in Xenosaga) are complete bull. If the creators had done any real research, and I mean any, they would have at least once refered to the Evas as Nephelim. And they don't. They just toss in words like Adam, Angels, and "just as the Dead Sea Scrolls predicted" every once in a while and hope that adds some level of religious significance to the story.

Until about ep 13, Eva is totally salvageable. They got off to an amazing start, but the totally screwed it up in the second half. That is why I give it a 5/10 for story, because it had about five tenths of a great story.

As for character, none of them develop. Remember, the plot drops off about halfway through, so how could they develop? But most of them had a good base to build off of and got off to a running start. Asuka is really the only one I can't stand. Look, I've met an been friends with girls who had anti-social and various other personality disorders and none of them were anywhere near this annoying or unattractive. I mean, If she's going to be such an obvious love interest, shouldn't we at least be able to, I don't know, tolerate her? At least with Rei we could have better pursued an Oedipus Rex parallel, but then she commits suicide and, well, Oedipus really isn't Oedipus if he doesn't do his mother. Must all my hopes be crushed in this way?

And, look, I joke about it now, but the se4cond half of Eva really is that bad. I recommend watching it if you ever get the chance, but don't buy anything beyond ep13, that way, you can just imagine how well the series could have gone from there.

Of course, this is why I'm so excited about the Rebuild. The first Ep of that was awesome (of course the first half of the series always was) so I'm hoping it will go on to fulfill All my expectations and restore Eva to what it should have been as the 1st mystic robot series.

Still, even if things don't work out there's always RahXephon and Fafner to carry on the legacy. Seriously, once you're done watching this, go ahead and watch RahXephon and Fafner. They accomplish together what their predecessor couldn't. Namely, a complete giant robot series with a deeper meaning (especially RahXephon), likable and provoking characters, and 26 episodes of gripping action scenes (especially Fafner).

Neon Genesis Evangelion is the magnum opus of all anime in itself. Never before has such a depth and sense of self been applied to a screen. This absolutely magnificent masterpiece will captivate any mind in the first few episodes, the story telling, and utterly every aspect of this series is perfection. I cannot recommend Neon Genesis enough, truly, it is the perfect creation. You will walk away with a new perspective of the world, and always reflect on this gorgeous art.

This series has always baffled me. I'll admit that the animation is excellent and the characters could have been endearing, but the story has to be one of the most convoluted and incoherent disasters I've ever seen filmed in any format and that drags it way down in my opinions.

Yet, this series seems to live in most peoples top 10 and top 20 lists for best anime. I always end up wondering if we are watching the same anime.

For me and a lot of other people the best anime until now. In 1995 it created a whole new genre and was like a big bang all around the world saying: look what the Japanese are watching instead of sitcoms.

why watch it today? I`ve already seen it 6 times and even if the music is ridiculous, the animation is more than ten years old - the story and the characters are supreme.
so you`ll prabably hate the main character most of the time. but if you ask yourself honestly, what would i do? then you can nearly experience feelings of beeing forsaken, love or lonelyness yourself.

Evnen if you do not like this emotional stuff, you still have the battles with huge roboters against always very different monsters, a lot of fun and myth behind the story.

plus an ending of which you can think about days or longer this is still
t h e anime

A very original anime. Definitely not for everyone. It's not a mecha anime (it's regular or just good in that style), but Evangelion has an unique style. It combines philosophy, ethic, religion, action, technology and art (the animation is great) in a very powerful way!

I'm definitely late to the party here, but I guess I have to review my favourite Anime series so far.

The story unfolds brilliantly, making the transition from a relatively normal, and simplistic story, to a somewhat dark and complex one, seamlessly, and maintaining great character development throughout.
There are however a few things which detract from NGE. Not least of which is the rampant religious symbolism. I didn't mind them putting clear religious references in if that would give the story a wider context, but towards the end they begin to use references alone as "explanations". Notably "Lilith", a biblical character I had no knowledge of prior to the series, and only a little more afterwards. I get the feeling there is an important relationship between the Angels which has not been explained, and relies on biblical knowledge to fill in the gaps. I think most of the religious symbolism and reference could have been removed without detracting too much from the story, and in many cases improving it.
Another minor detail I was annoyed with was the complete disappearance of Touji, after his debut as an eva pilot. It seems odd that after one of the best scenes in the series, the destruction of Touji's entry plug, that his character suddenly becomes irrelevant. I was incredibly glad that Touji didn't die, but by removing him from the storyline from then on, he essentially does die, just without subjecting us to the reality of it.

It seems a lot of people didn't like the ending of the series, due to its abandoning of the main story elements. However, the first time I watched the latter part of the series, the ending almost seemed to fit perfectly. The increasing complexity of the main storyline, made the dream sequences seem much simpler and understandable by comparison, and therefore, what might otherwise have been confusing sequences became a baseline to help understand the extreme events, and the actions of the characters towards the ending.
Admittedly the incomplete "real" storyline does leave many things uncertain, and as an absolute ending to the story, it could have been better, but I still think the dream sequences did a brilliant job of ending the story, at least that of the characters. I think overall I preferred the ending of the series, to the ending of EoE , but there are many events in EoE, as well as its own dream sequences, which would complement, and give the series ending a more understandable context.

This series was real weak imo. I watched all the episodes released on dvd years back because my boy told me it was nice but I was so disgusted with it because it was so boring. Not only did it take forever to get anywhere but the main character was not likable at all, that is kinda important for a series, there were times when i wanted to kill off the main character just because he was such a loser. There are so many drones who love this series because it was the first they saw or because that is what others like or w/e. If you think this series is something you have not seen much i guess, there are a million animes that kill this garbage. Im glad i rented the disks and didnt buy them.

On another note an anime that i watched around the same time was NOIR (fansubbed version), it was not licensed at the time. That is an anime that deserves every acolade that there is.

There's no need to tell you that Neon Genesis Evangelion is one of the most... blah blah blah... and is still being popularized even after more than 10 years since it's debut. As for me, I'm on the side that doesn't get it, but I know a part of what it tries to do. Never mind the mecha, the religious concepts, the fanservice, the violence, or necessarily the mindfucking - I didn't actually care much for the plot or even most of the series itself. What I do know, however, is that I believe that Shinji is one of the most mis/properly-labeled characters in anime history. I'm sure it has been discussed to death, but still, it's not really fair to see a character that represents the human being being ridiculed by the fellow humans that he is based on.

Shinji, as most of you know, is the protagonist who has been thrust into one of the harshest circumstantial situations ever created: save the world, earn your father's (who abandoned you, by the way) respect, earn your peers' respect, and be thrown into a mindfuck program in the last 2 episodes. I'm not going to tell you to place yourself in his shoes while watching, but do take note that he represents the entire human race, trying to survive the apocolypse that the Angels are bringing, while at the same time having to deal with a ton of other important-to-him things. I'm pretty sure that even a normal human could not do the things he has accomplished throughout the series - defeat XX Angels, save fellow pilots, anger your father more times than often, and find out extremely freakish secrets that has been attending your class since arrival. A mind could go on the brink of insanity with all these things happening within a medium-short timespan, and it's just amazing how this mislabeled "pussy" can still go through to the end and still have a beating heart. Having watched this during one of my depressing adolescent teenage years, it's a little more easier to see the changes he goes through while suffering under the author's intent - all he wants is his father's recognition, but he doesn't seem to be aware of his helpful/apocolyptical surroundings. As for the rest of the human race, could they do the same thing as this pussy can? In a way, Shinji does bring down the representation of human beings - as slimy cowards who cannot do shit when thrust into armegeddon, and always trying to find the easy way out of things, leaving the soul soiled, ragged, and deflated.

The other characters are only slightly less humane than Shinji - Misato being single and suffering with Shinji, Asuka suffering almost the same situation as Shinji, Rei being juxtapositioned between Shinji and his father, etc., but nonetheless they show deeper sides of humans and how shallow they really are.

The rest of the plot is phooflooey - I wouldn't care less. Nothing that was suppose to make sense made sense, and mostly everyone is still fucked up one way or another.

As for value, what do you expect from an anime who has withstood at least 10 years and will hover around for another 50 or 100?

Still, I'm astonished that this anime was even created. I don't think it's the best anime ever, but it sure did open new doors for new ones.

I could just come here and write one word: perfect! , but wouldn't be fair to those who want real opinions about NGE.

Im goin to be honest about this. Im not very fond of Mecha anime and the reason i went to see NGE was because of its reputation; it is very well spoken of; so i just wanted to know what was the big deal.
I could not be more amazed! This anime will touch everyone, think.

I saw a lot of reviews sayin that Evangelion starts breaking half way trough. Well i think that it is when NGE gets to where it wants to show.
On the early episodes you will see robots fighting and explosions and big guns and the city crumbling and all those things you would espect to see in Mecha. But honestly, I think that all those robots were only to get some action, otherwise it would be a bunch of people sitting on a round table talkin to a shrink...

By the time you get to were the story "breaks" I advice you to forget the Mecha and pay attention to the dialogs and the characters inner toughts much more coz thatz where the writter was focusing. And be aware that if you whant to see another Mecha anime you will get very disappointed, i think.

I dont want to say what i interpreted from NGE because i think everyone should make his own mind about it. Ill just say that humans are a very complex being...

Overall, I think every single person should see Neon Genesis Evangelion, because it is a very strong and phylosofical writing and it will make you quention yourself.

WATCH THE MOVIE END OF EVANGELION!!!! It tottally completes the story and you will get the whole perspective on NGE. Dont curse on the last episode without seeing the movie!

Like many of us Ive always heard all the hype about NGE but I just never bothered with it b/c after watching the first few episodes I decided I didnt want to watch another "mecha" anime. WOW could I have been more wrong about NGE, it is so not just another mecha anime in fact I wouldnt even put it in that catagory. Some people have said the story drops in teh middle of the anime, but that is when it really picks up for me b/c that is when the pieces of the puzzle start to very slowly come together. If you are looking to watch some super action packed anime you might like some of NGE, but the last few episodes will definately dissapoint you however if you are looking for something more meaningful, then this is it! Delve into the human psyche and you really see what lies we tell ourselves and everyone around us.

Also DONT MISS OUT ON THE MOVIES, they show the action that pretty much follows along with the introspective episodes that conclude the series...it helps you see what happens when someone has soo much to deal with.

After watching this entire series I understood what the hype was all about. However was somethings that made me rate the story a little lower. Just when everything seems to be moving along towards the end of the anime it goes into this psychological type of last few episodes. Not only where they unecessarily confusing but it left me with the biggest cliff hanger feeling I've ever experienced. I was able to understand a little more of the ending once I watched the movies, but they still leave with a cliff hanger, and one of them is just a recompilation of important story events. This anime is all deserving of the hype however because it does really manage to hook you, using its ways to display the story. Like using interesting twists and turns that were unexpected (and has a lot of foreshadowing that you can catch the second time around). Definately a good anime for the experience.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is a classic action-mecha anime released in 1995 whose quality takes a nose dive halfway through.

The animation for the first half is very decent for an anime in 1995. Some backgrounds are very detailed, and the battle scenes are exciting to watch. However, the quality drops significantly half way through the series. This drop was due to scheduling restraints, and caused later episodes to have constantly repeating frames and some scenes to be totally void of, or suffering from a lack of animation.

The quality of the sound remains consistent throughout. There are no problems regarding the voice overs in Neon Genesis Evangelion, and the half decent opening theme doesn't change. Although technically, the ending theme doesn't change as well, it is sang by and remixed throughout the anime. Some of the background music are good, while others aren't noticeable.

The storyline is another thing that took a nose dive half way through the series. Neon Genesis Evangelion starts off very promisingly, and plenty of interesting questions are introduced in the first dozen episodes. However, most of the questions remain unanswered even at the end of the series. In fact, the anime doesn't conclude, as the final few episodes were dedicated to more character development as opposed to storyline development. There are two movies out which apparently are a supplement the storyline of Neon Genesis Evangelion, so hopefully the conclusion is shown in there.
I greatly penalize inconclusive anime, because I find it a waste of money to purchase a series which only leaves the viewer wondering what will happen. But I will let Neon Genesis Evangelion be an exception, as I have not yet seen the two movies, which might conclude this very promising storyline.

The character development in Neon Genesis Evangelion is accomplished in a very strange way. Instead of developing the characters as the storyline progresses, the anime sometimes takes half, or even an entire episode to show the viewer the 'thoughts' of the character. I found those episodes to be extremely boring, because it constantly played back scenes from previous episodes. But, at least this method got the character development done.

The value of Neon Genesis Evangelion is hard to judge. If the movies do not conclude the storyline, then this anime is definitely not worth watching in my opinion. Of course, the conclusion might have already been drawn in the final few episodes, but if that were the case, then the creators did a very bad job of making it noticeable to the viewer. If the viewer has to re-watch the anime more than once, or have to do more than half an hour of research on an anime to understand the conclusion, then the way in which the story is presented is too complex and the anime is definitely not worth watching, at least storyline wise.
My enjoyment of Neon Genesis Evangelion was greatly thwarted by the quality drop halfway through. If you don't mind the consistency of quality in an anime or a lack of or difficult to understand conclusion, then you might enjoy Neon Genesis Evangelion a lot more than me.

Neon Genesis Evangelion is my favorite anime of all time.

In itself, it really isn't all that special; at first glance, it just looks like another mecha series. But what really makes it stand apart from the others is the fact that this is the first "smart" anime and in my opinion, still in a league all its own.

Nowhere else are you going to find religious dogma and symbolism, the 'accurate' portrayal of psychological theory and illness and the struggles of pursuing happiness, fulfillment and, ultimately, existence as you do in this series (as far as television shows go at least). And the best part is that its presented on a backdrop that everyone can understand and that if you aren't aware of the details, it won't severely affect your views of the story.

The characters are complicated and real, their problems are extreme but at the same time relatable, the story is somewhat predictable but compensates for it by going into a depth that I couldn't even begin to explain, somehow still leaving you with plenty of room for interpretation and something to think about (perhaps too much as it lacks sufficient closure).

Throughout the entire series the use of different techniques, changing perspectives, timing, flashbacks and sound (including actual recordings and the classical soundtrack) keep the story involving.

And though it hardly compares with other more recent anime, it really did pioneer the graphic viewing experience, setting the tone for all those to follow.

I can understand why people have mixed emotions over this one. At some point I think it's a good idea to see this anime's page on wikipedia to fully appreciate what it does and represents. Maybe you'll see why it is officially the most recognized and popular anime of all time.
