The ending of this anime almost made me cry. It was heartwarming and endearing, giving all viewers a message that good can win in the end and that being genuinely kind will work out. This anime takes place where humans have caused their own disaster through the industrial age (pollution). Insects came from the toxins of pollution and the humans that are still remaining are at ends with the insects, killing them, and in return, bringing on the wrath of the Ohms, a fearful insect with unsurmountable rage. However, there is hope. In the Valley of the Wind, there exists Princess Nausicaa, a person who respects life and the insects and is extremely kind. You join her as she faces challenges of the human ability to be cruel and kind.

If I had to complain about anything, it would be that Nausicaa seems a little surreal. In all of the situations that the viewer encounts while watching Nausicaa, Nausicaa always has the answer. However, the fact that she acts out of kindness and hope kind of makes up for it.

Also, the characters aren't as in depth as I would like. Although it's a two hour movie, most of it deals with the plot and we get to meet the characters very briefly. How the world has come to be in such peril isn't described in much detail either except in the beginning when they say that humans have caused this. Of course, I understand since going over two hours would be a little too much, but it would have been awesome if Hayao Miyazaki just explained a teeny bit more. And another question that I've wondered about when watching the movie: Why doesn't Nausicaa wear underwear?

Overall, a great anime filled with messages of hope and kindness that balances out the acts of cruelty and ignorance that humans are capable of. Give it a try and you might walk away satisfied.

I know that many people consider other Miyazaki movies to be better, but this is the one I consider his masterpiece. it has a solid and complete storyline in a world filled with believable characters and a vision of hope that is missing from too many movies and TV series now.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is a very impressive 110 minute long anime movie made in 1984, with top quality animation for its time, and a storyline that is excellent even to this day.

Being a movie made in 1984, the quality of the graphics and animation is extremely high. There are a number of graphical inconsistencies throughout, in addition to some lack of shadows and sharpness compared to modern day anime. However, Nausicaä looks fabulous for its time, and still looks much better than many other productions that were produced more than a decade later.

The music throughout the movie are too short and end too abruptly in my opinion, but they do ad to the excitement and sound great while they last. The sound effects were also a bit on the lacking side in Nausicaä, but the voice acting was good. Although the sound and music are acceptable by today's standards, back in 1984, it would have been held at the highest regard.

The storyline is where Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind truly shines. It's creative; well developed; fast paced; exciting from the very start, and, despite a bit abrupt, has a very well executed ending. There is one unexplained fact in this movie that should not have been there, but the fact is more related to character, than storyline. Overall, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has a top class storyline for audiences of all ages.

The character development is a bit off in Nausicaä: a number of character either lack development or are underdeveloped. Occasionally, the realism of the personalities of the characters seem slightly doubtful, and there is one unexplained character in this movie that seems to have had quite some influence on the storyline. Nevertheless, the characters only degrade the overall enjoyment of Nausicaä very slightly.

A masterpiece turned classic, Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind has been one of the anime that had set the standard for the industry. Storyline wise, it is still a masterpiece, and it is the storyline that made me enjoy this old movie so much. I strongly recommend this anime movie to all viewers who don't mind slightly outdated animation, and love a good storyline.

I was quite impressedwith this anime movie. I kept hearing about how great it was from other peoples reviews of other works by the same author. Everyone always says "oh this was good but not as good as Nausica...". And they were right.

I would like to say that I only have seen a few of Miyazaki's projects, and that it troubles me that other people have to go and critique things by compareing and contrasting with other things. I know people are creatures of comparison by nature, but hey, for cryinoutloud people dont cha know how to do anything else!!

On with the rateing.

ANIMATION: I chose to give this a nine for animation because it was smooth and blended together well, and because none of the characters everlooked mesed up through their actions and what not. This is an older film so the style looks oldschool which I liked.

SOUND: I liked the main theme a lot and the other background music and sound effects were good, but there was this wierd child singing theme/ thing, and yeah, I didnt like that too much, so I bumped the score to an eight.

STORY: The story was about as origional as I had heard of in a long while, so I gave a ten for that and because I like the fairytail feel the story had to it. If I did have a problem with the story it would have to be: how did the world get to be the way it was in the story, and what happend after the ohmu left at the end of the story... I mean its not like they solved the problem of the swamp spreading...

CHARACTER: Personally, I liked the characters. They all seemed realistic enough and werent all like ye olden stereotypical fairytail characters.

VALUE: The fansub I watched was done exceptionally well, although they did adlib a little but thats just fine with me. Probably I'll watch it again a few times. Deffinately worth your time.

Miyazaki's first anime movie based on his first manga. Nausicaa is Miyazaki's defining moment. And it gave us perhaps the greatest anime director of our times. Though now it is pretty dated, Nausicaa stilll has all the charms of the later works of Studio Ghibli thus making it a very memorable movie.

Animation
For 1984 this must have been high quality stuff, for 2006 - this is a joke. The animation is very very VERY dated. Just by watching it for 5 seconds you can tell that this is ancient. But, the quality is not bad. Sure, Nausicaa's individual hair are not shown. The clouds are not fluffy etc. but it still remains beautiful. Given a 22 year gap into account, I want to give this an 8. But for today's standards I'll have to give this a 4. So Nasuicaa gets a 6.

Sound
While animation was a ho-hum, i am pleased to say that the sound quality for Nausicaa is amazing. The music is very beautiful and moving. The main theme is exceptionaaly good. Delighful would be apt in describing the sound of this movie. Legends of the wind is one of favorite symphonies.

Story
The story is similar to Princess Mononoke. Humans and nature do not get along with each other and the central character tries to convince both sides to co-exist.
While Mononoke takes the dark way, Nausicaa takes the lighter path. The finer parts are obviously different, and thus remains unique and exhilirating.

Character
Nausicaa, the lead role is very charming. By the end, her character would even melt the col hearted. She remains the best character throughout. And whenever she leaves the scene, the movie loses it's shine (momentarily). Arguably, one of the finest characters in Japanese Anime.
The other characters are nothing to rave about. They are not dealt with in much detail. But with Nausicaa on the screen, one tends to forget about the other characters.

Value
This movie by today standards is nothing extra special. But taking into light that this movie is 22 years old and yet remains a captivating shows the movie's strength. Nausicaa is a trend-setter. It was then, and will remain so for times to come. Something like Casablanca for Hollywood Romance.

Enjoyment
Like all other Studio Ghibli's works, this movie is very enjoyable from the very first second to the last minute. It shares with other movies by being captivating and and an unforgettable experience for all anime lovers. Go ahead and watch this one!!!

Side note: Nasuicaa is based on Miyazaki's only manga. It differs from the anime and is very complex, very dark (unlike the movie). Go and read it if you can get your hands on it.

Nausicaa is imho, the best of the earliest Miyazaki's.

It features so many themes, in such an emotional way, that I couldn't not consider it the number one among 80' productions (which includes also: Laputa, Totoro and Kiki).

Nausica of the Valley of the Wind is Hyao Miyazaki's earliest piece of work and is defently not my favourite one, but still worth a look if you're fans of his work.

Well...I didn't like it. I know, I know, EVERYONE who's ever seen this is in love with it, but it just didn't fit with me. It seemed to me that the whole production was Miyazaki's ultimate ego trip - a movie based off his manga, featuring all of his favourite things! They're all here - flying, an underage heroine, strong environmental messages - if you LOVE Miyazaki, you'll adore this. But if you're just a casual fan of his works (like myself), and aren't as amazed by flying as Miyazaki seems to be, you'll probably think this isn't that great, and even a tad dull. This has the same problems that Laputa had - too much story and not enough character. We're expected to feel for Naushika as she struggles to save the ohmu, but most of the tiem to me, she came off a a crazy lady. Although a the tone was established, and there are some REALLY great ideas and scenes, none of those ideas are developed, and none of those scenes last long enough.

If I'll be allowed to go off on a tangent, although Naushika was made first, it seems kind of between two other Miyazaki worlds - the child like, wonderous one of Laputa, and the serious War-torn one of Mononoke.

However, when all is said and done, Mononoke did it better.

Though I always have a few complaints about Hayao Miyazaki's stories, I do have to say that I haven't yet seen a movie from him that I could not like. One of which is "Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind", a story of a windriding princess of a small, peacefull kingdom.

My complaint in Miyazaki's style is how his stories seems to beat you over the head about "living with nature". This environmentalist tone feels almost overbearing and, to me, feels overly done, though I do agree with the basic message.

That said, Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind is still a visual, auditory, and heartwarming treat of a film.

A classic from Miyazaki seldom fails an avid anime watcher and Nausicaa is one of them. The story tells of how a girl who is a Princess of the Valley of the Winds trying to understand why the Earth is getting poisoned and a way to save mankind from that. Some viewers may find the movie too slow for their liking and it's not a good idea to watch it while one is tired.

I modified the review since I'll try to be more objective toward this anime. One thing is certain though. This is a good anime. It has some moments that are very impressive and touching. But if you want a better outlook of this fantastic world of Nausicaa and its inhabitants you could turn to the homonymous manga which expands greatly the story and makes all the characters the more interesting.

Another brilliant work from ghibli. For something that is released in 1984, the story will have you amazed till the end. Its so good, as good or better than mononoke. A clearly must watch and keep. The story is somewhat like monoke in a sense, but has a slightly different tiwst.

I don't think one word could explain this but...it's Superb !
It's been quite a while since I saw high quality anime (and I mean a real one), I'm extremely glad I've watch these classics instead of gundam seed destiny or alike.
Nausicaa tells the story of young princess in the future where mankind is almost at extinction ( and I thought the "recommend by wwf" logo in the very beginning of the story was a pun ^_^') and toxin beast roam the earth, yet she try to reason with them instead of killing them since she knows the meaning of co-exist and well... it's best for you to watch it yourself instead of reading spoilers :D but all I can say is that the story is one of the best I've seen.
The animation was suprisingly very very good even for today standard and I personally like the animation style drawing which resembles great anime at 80's like Macross, etc.
The sound & music is other thing that increase need to praised although there aren't plenty of them but the orchestral background music really fits with the mood of scene.
As for the characters, I noticed that it focused heavely on Nausicaa only but it's reasonable since it's a movie after all, yet even she herself is a quite an original characters with simple yet complex in some way personality but still make sense in real world... which also makes her one of my favourite characters.
Overall, Nausicaa try to tell many message though pictures and hidden meaning about war, pollution, and co-existing with each other, A must watch for all of you who like to see some quality movies.

"Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind" is the first film from Ghibli, and in some people's minds still their best work to this day. Despite the fact I don't agree with the statement, it still is an exceptional film.

Nausicaa is a movie that I have seen twice. I first saw it a few years ago in japanese with chinese subtitles. As a result I didn't understand it that well. Yesterday I watched the Disney dubbed version. This movie is on par with Princess Mononoke and Castle in the Sky. It is the story of a young princess in a a world after the destruction of modern civilization. If you want to know more read on.

I finally borrowed this off of a friend of mine. Unfortunatly, I had to watch it with chinese subtitles, so with what little comprehension of the Japanese language availiable to me, I tryed my best to understand the plot to this story.

Very intriguing, I now see the likeness between this anime and mononoke hime. Without acting like an environmentalist, Miyazaki managed to communicate both sides of the story very well, like he recently did in mononoke. It's an older movie, so the animation and sound may not seem quite as impressive when compared to animes of today, but they are still pretty good and worthy of the scores I gave them.

Definetly worth the watch, some of the story is a little complex and hard to follow (that may be because I was watching jap dub with chinese subs :) )
but it was worth it. A brilliant masterpiece from Miyazaki.

When I saw this about a month ago, I was misinformed that it was made in 2002. I thought, "wow this is pretty good animation, I wish everything else was animated this well." Then, I learned that the movie was animated in 1984! It is that good. I just cannot believe this was made over 20 years ago. The story is also really worth noting and the voice acting for both Japanese and English is superb.

Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind is part of a trilogy of Ghibli greats, with the other two being Grave of the Fireflies and Spirited Away. Even after twenty years, the timeless animation rivals many titles created in the mid-nineties. The ohmu look better than the bugs in Blue Gender. The sweeping, epic music and the compelling story make Nausicaä a classic of anime. My father once brought this (on a fansubbed VHS tape) to me right along with The Little Mermaid. Despite that I had to read letters on the screen, I watched it with a giddy, childish delight. I imagine I had a huge smile on my face. More than ten years later, I wear that same grin.
