| Ugh, the creator probably had a lot of fun making this anime but I was not very impressed watching the first half of this episode. At first it seems a lot like Ah! My Goddess with this "goddess magic" person appearing out of nowhere in this solitary living guy's life. Then as she attempts to do her best, she just wreaks havoc that reminds me of the numerous similar clumsy-girl animes. Even more similar to Ah my goddess when another spirit comes out with a similar personality to Uld...
Although this anime lacks absolutely any character development and instead relies on mindless destruction humor and baseless and awkward girl devotion to this main character, the cute Shaorin due to her unfamiliarity with her new world kind of makes this anime worth watching if you have nothing to do. I also like the cute art with the various Chinese magic stuff. The guy has like nothing good about him. Just some generic character like how the guy in Mahoromatic was boring....
Overall, for an anime made in the yr 2000, I'd expect more from it. A lot of it is really corny and really doesn't stem from any logic. For example in the first epiosde when Tasuke (main character) is about to fall from the toilet and the little goddess is doing her best to hold him up. He says something as stupid as "Let go Rishu, you'll fall too, let me fall". Okay, I guess he's supposed to be pure-hearted, but this just makes it really corny and unrealistic.
I guess someone might like this anime if they like random things happening with a slight chuckle for weird events happening out of no where. Otherwise.... zzzzz

| It was a ripp off from other anime like Oh My Goddess.
Everything is average here. The art was ok and acceptable in their days but there was no deep detail or any special behind it. That's mean no good special effect stuff but other stuff weren't mess up either so art is fine for this one. Story is well another school days with friend and all the crazyness with girls running you trying to seduce you.
Shaorin is fairly cute, Rishu is fairly sexy and other guy is pretty plain average. Once you meet all the guy and girls in the story you don't have to pay attention to any other thing. They keep hitting it each other, then one question come forward: Can Shaorin and Tasuke be a normal couples and accept by the god and human. Trying to find that out, the story go and on. Each ep. doesn't have enough plot to be call "story" it's just some random they created for us to waste our time and money. If you bored. Skip it all the way and watch the last 2 ep. and you'll find a good ending to end a fair anime. :)

| Mamotte Shugogetten is something you'd expect. A sappy school boy with a regular life, until something "magical" happens, and its usual involved with a girl with unnatural powers that gives the usual caring ambiance. Nothing seems so great as I remembered it. I even watched this again, just to make sure if I had some second impressions on it. I always had that feeling that it made itself too much of a spin-off with Ah! My Goddess. However, it is only good to watch for the comedy alone, although there was some weak drama points. The opening theme music on it was a little impressive, and I believed that the animation was done well in its cutesy way. As a side note though, I never seemed to think that it would even be as bad with the very little character development and ongoing humor that was just done so, repetitive in an obnoxious and irritable way. I never really liked that main character Tasuke; even all of the characters gives off more emotions than anything else that happens in those episodes. He only gets angry, bitter, macho-like, and becomes a full boaster whenever someone wants to take Shaorin away from him. Yes, it's protagonist man, part protagonist, part man, all annoyance. Maybe he does deserve to be tortured in the process, I'm glad he was.
And that Rishu character, just so funny and cute in that whole story, probably made the plot at the most comical in those moments; which was more oddly enough than it already had been. If you haven't seen it, don't worry about it too much. It's only something that could be only watch if you are a fan of the magical-girl/comedy type of genre.

| I watched this and the ova. Both were good, however if you want to watch ova watch this first because the ova continues off from this story.
first issue, yes this is like ah my goddess, however im not gonna compare or give a bias opinion based on which is better. also I dont know which came 1st, the AMG anime came 1st but the manga I dont know, and let me say altough it may be alike to AMG however it is also far diferent in many ways.
second issue, this anime is incredibly funny. Let me say that one part made me laugh hard enough to make my sides hurt (gunnamon sneeze)ahahaha!
third issue, dont buy the DVD like me, it contains the worst subtitles ive ever seen, in spelling, grammar, timing, translation, and sometimes there just left out.

| Denshin Mamotte Shugogeten (based on a manga of the same name) is about Tasuke, a normal high school boy, who gets two ancient Chinese artifacts from his father, who is a world traveler. These artifacts hold within them spirits that serve the person who releases the spirits from their respective artifact. Shaolin is a protector whose job is to protect the one who releases her with a 'shitenrin' that summons various subordinate spirits which help her do her job. Ruaan is a servant whose job is to make her releasor as happy as possible by granting any which possible by using her wand ['kokutentou'] (and her powers) to animate objects to do her biding. All three of them, including Tauske end up at his high school in various ways. Tauske, a nice guy as he is, endures their antics on their various adventures.
Perhaps I should define a term first before I move on. In a very low male:female ratio (or female:male ratio) population, there is a tendency for the the larger gender proportion (women or men respectively) of the population to start grouping around individuals of the opposite gender (vice versa). If the ratio doesn't change, the surrounding men or women have a tendency of becoming obsessive in becoming close to the person they... 'like' a lot. This is called glomming -- and there is plenty of glomming in DMS TV. After awhile, the glomming becomes tiresome and downright frustrating at times when it comes to certain obsessive characters going after their respective targets episode after episode after episode... That, and the pace of the whole series in general in terms of the overall plot and where the series is going. It's just painfully slow. Granted, each episode is self-containing and has its own mini-plots, but the real raison d'etre for this series and the two main characters never really takes off until the last five or so episodes of the 22-episode series.
There is no real character development either, nor is there any real character evolution or change through the series, aside from Shao's development. When development does come, it is very slow as well.
Looking at almost all of the elemets (aside from the animation and the sound), the series pretty much fails in terms of an anime (but would fit more with an American cartoon series, which usually don't have any real overall series plot).
So, then, what makes this series so enjoyable? To make it short and simple, it's basically Shao and Rishu (and Tauske, to an extent). Shao has a heart, as pure as snow; her adaptation into modern society is a task which she undertakes that contrasts strongly with her past. As the result, I could not help but root for her character deeply (something like the underdog character in the face of other females that go after Tauske). It is impossible to ignore her 'moe'-ness as well as her character design, which (as well as Yamanobe Shouko's) is very well done, in my opinion. Rishu, on the other hand, is just absolutely kawaii and steals the show in many scenes throughout the series.
Where DMS TV also has(had?) a glimmer of hope is the relationship that develops between Shao and Tauske. They're both indecisive and timid when it comes to their real feelings towards each other, and they try to come to terms with those feelings in his/her own way. The final development and movement in the relationship between the two during the last part of the series was, unfortunately, too little too late, and it ends up being continued in the DMS OVA (look for my DMS OVA review when it comes out).
In all honesty, DMS OVA was one of the first 'series' I saw after getting into anime, and I was finally able to come across this series, which may have skewed my rating a bit high. All in all, I enjoyed the DMS project greatly, especially having seen the television series, which explains why the DMS OVA started out the way it did. The only real proble is that this series falls into the rut that many other mediocre series fall into: lack of plot and character movement and development, and [unoriginal] character stereotypes that prevail for most of the cast. Not everyone will like this series because of its blatant shoujo elements of romance that saturates this series, but there are other elements that make it close to being a harem series (which it isn't). Overall, this is anime that should be watched if a light mood, some comedy, and a touch of romance is desired to get rid of a good bit of boredom.

| For some not totally explicable reason, I enjoyed this anime very much. Maybe its because of the fact that there is a lot of comedy with very little fan service (in contrast to the other series I'm watching right now). Or maybe because I find that Tasuke and Shao make a nice couple. Or maybe because Rishu is just so cute.
In any case, Mamotte Shugogetten is very episodic. This is actually one of the first almost completely episodic anime that I enjoyed. I didn't like the ending too much though; it felt too predictable, cliche, and just not very well done. Also, there are several episodes concerning side characters that I couldn't care less about. The background music doesn't excite me either; I found the cheap Chinese folk music imitation quite repulsive.
Overall, Mamotte Shugogetten TV is a fun and light romance comedy that will make you fell good after watching it. The main hinder to watching it is that there is no decent quality fansub of the whole series (and thus the '9' for value). I wonder why; Mamotte Shugogetten TV is quite a good (or at the very least decent) series after all.

| this really deserves a better rating than a 6....Well I've read the manga and i gotta say it followed pretty closely. If you want laughs and a brighter day, then i suggest watching this anime. I mean this definitely cheered me up after I finished watching Evangelion.
BTW- dont complain bout animation...consider the time it was made in =\
Another thing to note is that if you are looking for a "coherent" storyline, watch something else. This is meant purely for light humour and romance. A lot of the occurences that occur dont make much sense (for example - how is it that the people dont noticed certain giants walking around and not call the police bout it?)
Well overall its a good anime.
ANOTHER BTW- The opening is a really good opening. The song is kind of old school but it fits perfectly with the animation...even if you hate the anime, you should at least appreciate the opening. You a troll if you dont.

| Okay, I am re-editing my post, since I recently watched this series again.
Firstly, the animation wasn't the best, but it was very colorful and bright. I think the series reminds of Ah Megami Sama, which I have yet to see.
I thought the main theme song was quite catchy and very amusing and cute. The voice acting was done well, nothing negative there.
There wasn't a true good plot, and it just had more comedy than having a good story-line. Sometimes I tend to favor sheer craziness over good story-lines, however in this case I thought this series would stick with having a decent plot. In the end there isn't much closure, but I heard there is a sequel to the TV series, so I'll have to look into it.
I think the best feature are the Characters. This is where the comedy takes place. All sorts of love triangles, and each character has their own distinct personality which I liked very much. Especially the spirits of Shao, they are all so kawaii. And, Tasuke the main character isn't as boring as other lead male characters.
I'd probably re-watch this once a year and that's it. It doesn't stick out very much, but it's a quite light-hearted and amusing series.

| This series can easily be compared to Ah My Goddess since you have -the girls who must protect their master- no matter what. However Mamotte Shugogetten is more funny and not as serious as AMG seems to be. The drama/romance tail of it is there in Shugogetten but with the other good mix of comedy and slapstick, it makes for a good show.

| Slightly disappointing anime. Rather fun at times, but the story and character development lags far behind the aspirations of the series.
