| We are shown an inside view of Tokyo tower where several classes of middle-school girls just happen to be taking a field trip. A flash of light appears and three middle-school girls are instantly transported to a different world, Cephiro. The girls, Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu, are basically told that they are to become the Legendary Magic Knights since they were summoned by Princess Emeraude and that they must save Cephiro.

| This was one of the first anime series I saw and, admittedly, I loved everything about it at the time. Reflecting back, some eight years later, those feelings were only so strong because of my age. Like others have said, MKR is definitely aimed more at younger audiences, with its vibrant colors, cheerful & hyper soundtrack, overusage of friendship themes, typical genre characters, and an easy to grasp plot.
I really didn't enjoy the second series at all, as a side note.

| I saw this anime a while ago as a kid on TV ( all the episodes, both seasons) so I didn't have to buy dvds or tapes which by the way i wouldn't recommend "buying"
It is aimed at younger poeple so obviously if I saw it later in life I wouldn't have enjoyed and maybe not even continue watching.
I recommend it to 6-12 yr olds, like a yong audience, to watch it if it is on tv like those kids in europe or asia. i wouldn't put effort to watch it like buying or renting.

| First season only:
The funnest part of this anime was watching all the characters gain new weapons and magic. In other words, novelty is this anime's strongest aspect. Getting to know different places, characters, monsters, weapons, and magic made this anime appealing. I also have a weak spot for adventure based animes. Yet, unlike adventure based RPG games, I do not get to push buttons as monsters are tedious grinded away. Even though this anime is really old, I still can not bear the lack of adrealine rush.
However, after this novelty wears thin and all that remains is building relationships, strengthening will power and determination, overcoming troubles each step of the way, and attempting to save the fantasy world in the progress. Things take a relatively unsurprising and predictable pace. This is not much of a problem as long as the presentation and execution is decent and entertaining, which is not always the case for Magic Knight Rayearth.
Villains of this anime make this a lot more diverse and interesting. There is quite a nice cast of 'bad' characters and not all of them are the same. There are the usual mindless baddies in the beginning, but there are also other less obvious villains whose intentions bring a little more tension and drama to the series.
So in the end, this anime is just a little bit above average to me. Cute animation, but kind of worn and old. Good/fun in the magical aspect, boring in the fighting aspect, average in the character cast (but I'm sure you can find one to cheer for, despite the obvious screen time bias in the anime) and average story development. Pretty entertaining at times, boring at others... but not a bad watch since it gives off this feeling of being a classic anime representative of the time period. If only they did not draw out all the events so horribly... it got quite tedious at times.

| Magic Knight Rayearth is one of the work from Clamp. This is a very average anime that did not represent any unique sense and if you did not watch them, you did not miss anything important. The storylines is more or less based on a similar platform with Sailor Moon. However, the story made it interesting by using Magic and Mecha to made the story interesting.
Animation of this story is very good for 1990s standard. The sound is well dubbed, even most of the Seiyuu are not very high profile. However, the music was not special and did not make it memorable for the audience.
The story is something that you see more than ten times before, our three heroines went to the other world to save them, and obtains magical ability. However, the story have their twist and turn, which might made people attract to them. The story has been wasted on small fillers (compare to Manga), the storylines is too rush on important field (you can see that the author made the story too compact in the important area), they try to made a quick explanation or trip that is important to expand. On the other hand, the anime tends to give more screen times to the fighting scene on some of the monster that did not bring anything to the storylines.
Characters are typical one dimension characters, the three main heroines of this story is the characters that you can see from any super hero or supernatural show. Don't get me wrong, I still like this anime, and the characters are one of the main reason. It is because they are so typical heroine style of characters, I found them entertaining to watch. The villains and all the friendly troops in this anime is just a typical style of supernatural show or RPG Games e.g. Final Fanstasy.
However, this is an enjoyable anime to watch, and it has value for you to rewatch them again. This anime represent friendship, and on top of that the story (even it is so predictable), it is still fun to watch their fillers anyway.
The most interesting things about this anime is the names of the characters. I notice that the authors tend to make a short cut by borrow 90% of the characters from Car Models and Manufacture. If you stay awake long enough (or read Manga) you will notice the following names belongs to automobile names.
Cephiro (Cefiro)= Nissan Cefiro (aka Nissan Maxima in USA)
Emeraude = Mitsubishi Emeraude (aka Galant in USA)
Presea = Nissan Presea (aka Sentra in USA)
Ferio= Honda Ferio (aka Honda Civic in USA)
Escudo (magical item)= Suzuki Escudo
Zagato = Aston Martin AR1 ZAGATO
Ascot= Honda Ascot (aka Honda Accord in USA)
Pajero (monster of Ascot)= Mitsubishi Pajero (aka Shogun in USA)
Vigor (monster of Ascot) = Honda Vigor (aka Acura RL in USA)
Innova= Honda Innova (aka Acura RSX in USA)
Caldina = Toyota Caldina
Rafaga= Honda Rafaga (aka Acura CL in USA)
Allion (ice spell)= Toyota Allion
Windom (or Windham)= Toyota Windom (aka Camry in USA)
Ceres (Seres)= Toytota Ceres (aka Corolla in USA)
Lexus (Zagato robot)= Do I have to say more? everyone know what is LEXUS right?
Cresta (Lighting spell)= Toyota Cresta (see GTO for example)
Lantis (brother of Zagato)= Mazda Lantis (aka Mazda 323/ Mazda Protege in USA)
Primera (fairy of Lantis)= Nissan Primera
FTO (robot of Eagle)= Mitsubishi FTO (similar to Eclipse in USA)
Tata (Girl in part2)= Tata is the name of Indian car manufacture that affiliated to Honda/Rover in early 1990s
Laguna (robot of Tata)= Renault Laguna
This is only examples, the list can go on and on about the laziness of CLAMP by using the short cut for names by borrowing from the car on the street.

| Alas, I was just browsing through Pantha's (archaelogical?) library of reviews when I happened to stumble upon Magic Knight Rayearth. Turning to glance at the season two box set, which I picked up quite cheap on Ebay due to a glitch in the box art, I suddenly felt compelled to review it. With two separate seasons covering two story arcs, it almost would be best to split the series into separate reviews, but nevertheless, I shall compact this as best I can.
Being almost ten years old, one would be a bit misguided to rate the animation based on today's standards. For the time period, MKR's animation proved rather average, with a large focus on bright colors: reds, oranges, and yellows specifically. The typical cheery, large eyes common in most magical girl series are present here as well, but are penned against nicely drawn character designs. Certainly nothing spectacular in this category, aside from choosing different forms of the word "average," there really isn't much else to say.
As with animation, MKR does not boast much in regards to sound. Aside from a handful of catchy opening and ending themes, one finds little memorability regarding background music. Pitting it against animes of similar musical merit, one would find a similar score; that said, while not bad, MKR certainly does not set any records. Most likely butchered in the dubs (though I have yet to hear them myself), aside from the plentiful screams and shouting of each other's names, the Japanese vocal cast yields a decent, quite average, Seiyuu.
As has been abundantly stated, MKR follows a RPG-esque storyline, generic yet entertaining, appealing to both those who like and dislike the genre. I would agree with others in judging season one as the superior of the two; though lacking in much depth, it carries slightly more originality. From evolving armor and weapons to mighty mecha-gods, MKR has it all. Aptly paced, the first season flows together quite nicely with a comfortable, lighthearted approach, yielding an enjoyable watch from start to finish. Season two falters a bit, moving at a slower speed to focus more on Hikaru. I felt slightly bored at times, as too many story details are added without elaboration. Ending in a fashion similar to Sailor Moon's first season, it felt a bit overly shallow, but, nevertheless, satisfying.
While the main characters lack a certain depth, they fit into MKR's story without detracting from the overall experience. Though flat in nature, Hikaru's optimistic, perservering attitude establishes a pleasant, upbeat atmosphere which blankets both seasons. With an army of side characters at her side, I was slightly surprised at the extent to which these characters aid, rather than hinder, the story's progression. In fact, one might even consider "main characters" a misnomer; Umi and Fuu really play no central role, and seem more to be strongly developed side characters. Yet, while perhaps seemingly a bit faulty, one actually enjoys tracing the girls' experiences from episode to episode. For the time, for the genre, and for the target audience, however, I feel the character design is sufficient enough; one can easily find a series with a much, much worse caste.
Lastly, the value and enjoyment factors of MKR. Due to the length of both seasons together, and the slight weakness of season two, MKR simply loses some of its sparkle after an initial watch. Complimented by the awkward pace of season two, it felt as if MKR's lifespan was elongated slightly too far; it could have accomplished the same thing in a shorter time. Even so, MKR is a highly enjoyable watch the first time through, and I would go as far as to say, "Watch it."

| Magic Knight Rayearth is not perfect. The animation is only decent, the story is somewhat cliched, and the characters spent too much time reaffirming their quest. Even so, it is a pretty funny series and kept me entertained (that's the main thing, isn't it?). Overall, I would reccommend this seires to anyone interested in anime.

| It was fairly decent, but then the later season wasn't really interesting or even as exciting through the whole storyline. The characters were good, and had that RPG feeling from its moments. This was one of the few anime from Clamp that I seemed to respect, which could‘ve been greatly improved from their character development. Aside from it all, the soundtrack of the whole series was something which was always cherishing on my part. A highly good anime that's targeted to the shoujo fans, with some added fantasy/adventure/action type of series.

| This is a nice and enjoyable magical girls anime. The plot may seem simple but it has some interesting twists; especially the end of the first season is great.
The animation isn't too bad, and the music is amusing. I really like the ending song, it always makes me feel better ^^
The characters are unique and brilliant, I think that's the strongest point of this series.
Overall, if you're looking for a magical girls anime that is better than an average one, you should try this one.

| Despite its target audience being girls in middle school, I found MKR worth watching. It's a long, kinda repetative and extremely predictable, however it has a number of funny, mildly cool and efficacious moments. Abound with whimsy and the ever so neat "I'm Watching an RPG" aspect Rayearth is a pleasant 49 episodes even if it is a little long

| Magical Girl meets mech, what more could you ask for!!
Split into 2 seperate story arcs, Magic Knight Rayearth is filled with wonderful characters and strong willed heroines!
The first part deals with the sad story of Princess Emeraude, the Pillar of Cephiro and the impending doom of this beautiful idyllic kingdom. Enter the Knights, 3 girls from the "real world" who are to become the saviours of this fantastic world full of magic and beautiful creatures.
It's a story of 3 strangers who get to know and trust each other as friends, but also have to learn how to be strong and the difficulties this implies.
The second half of the story deals with the sadness and terror inside peoples hearts, this leads to the 2nd story arc building up the 3 girls strengths and looking at their weaknesses.
This is a very beautiful story of will, love, trust and belief in oneself.
The animation is bright and pleasing and of course full of the typical Clamp style of doing things!
There is an array of intriguing and wonderful characters and whilst it does lack indepth character profiling, you realise that it's not that important and doesn't detract from the overall enjoyment.
The opening and ending themes are very catchy and overall Magic Knight Rayearth is very enjoyable and very pretty. I believe it should appeal to many people but an interest in shoujo type anime would be best!

| Of it's day Magic Knight Rayearth is one of the most original magical girl anime you'll find. Try your hardest to come up with anything this original; the first time ever girls and mechs were paired up in a "shoujo" manga, a fantasy world setting where everything is controlled by will, evolving armour and weapons, add to that the most interesting take on saving the Princess you're ever likely to find and the whole package is something new and fresh!

| well,i kinda liked this anime, cuz its cute, funny and it oppenly say that"hey,im almost like an RPG-Game!"
The first seasion were good, especially the ending, whith the "no-good-or-evil"concept,that reapers in seasion two(altough here it was easily predited)Strangley,my fav characters was Hikaru and Lantis, eventhough Lantis was kinda cold, and unpersonal. But if u thought about it,he actually has a personality too,it is explained later on in the second seasion, but i like this anime, nice to watch a light and happy anime sometimes too!

| 10 years ago this series looked great, and it's still a unique style even today.
This show felt to me like a fairly light themed show despite it's desperate attempt at being serious. The story was actually very innovative, with how the girls got transported and went from High School students to "The Magic Knights".
Sepphiro is a pretty interesting alternate world, and you meet some fairly cool characters throughout the course of this show, if not a bit cliche, and obvious.
Hikaru, Fuu, and Umi (The Magic Knights) are pretty predictable characters. They're likable enough, it's just hard to care when you can see what's coming so easily, they lay it all out for you. No shock value here.
MKR is a good alternative to all the gorey or dark animes out there, but there are still better fantasy's that I've seen.

| I’m curious to know how successful Magic Knight Rayearth could have been had it appeared about five or six years later. (A CLAMP anime hasn’t enjoyed any concrete success until Cardcaptor Sakura, mainly because most of them were nothing more than half-assed OVAs.) Unfortunately, the series appeared right during Sailor Moon’s peak and was automatically and unfairly dismissed (especially by American fans) as a carbon copy. Other than sharing a few genre-specific similarities, Rayearth is the lesser, but much different show.
Although there’s a bit more preamble in the second season (viewers get a little insight into their families), it’s definitely the weaker season as a whole. For one, it seems to be general consensus that the second season is the more melancholy. Both seasons have a dramatic, sinister mood, but the second has much more comedy. I mean, there’s actually a hot tub scene in it. It’s also much more repetitive and has the weaker ending. For two, look at the so-called “romance.” The first season was thankfully light on the L word. There was the thing between Fuu and Ferio, but Ferio only appeared once in each disc. In the second, each girl has a potential boyfriend…that rescues them. Not only is this where the annoying repetition begins, but these scenes could have been completely left out and nothing about the anime would change. Heck, it may have been a stronger anime without them. These boyfriend scenes were completely unimportant to the anime as a whole. And don’t get me started on Hikaru and Lantis. I swear there are about four scenes when the two were within earshot, but yet somehow and someway, the two are in loooooove. Hikaru has bad taste in men. Not only does Lantis have no personality, but he’s way too tall for her. She’ll need stilts to kiss his ass.
Last but not least, Magic Knight Rayearth is a sentai….without much sentai. Hikaru is obviously the main character, but the anime focuses on her way too much. For an anime that is supposed to focus on teamwork and friendship, that is a no-no. In the first season, quite a few times she would destroy an enemy by herself. I always found it amusing when, after this happens, the girls would say “We did it!” And I’m thinking “Err…’we’”? That’s not what I saw. What I saw was Hikaru doing a “Flame Arrow” while you two were yelling. “No, Hikaru! Don’t do it!” In the second season, the trio is separated for the majority of the series. In any case, the chemistry between these girls is weak, weak, weak.
As a self-proclaimed guru of the genre, I know all the rules and clichés of a magical girl. For one, the main characters are always cookie-cutter. They’re likable enough, but you’ve seen Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu before. They’re just color-coded this time around. Fortunately, the villains make up for this. In both seasons, villains are easily the best characters, particularly Eagle Vision (haha) and Nova of Rayearth II. Zagato aint half bad either.
It’s worth noting that the second season doesn’t stand by itself. I highly recommend watching the first season first for the second is full of spoilers. It even gives away the ending. Had it not been for that, I would say the two seasons stand alone being that previous exposure is not necessary. The first is definitely the best, though. All in all, if you like magical girls, you won’t do wrong with this. Yes, there are better ones, but there are others that are much, much worse. ……Wedding Peach, anyone?

| Magic Knight Rayearth can be seen as an role playing game instead of an anime series (they even said so directly in the anime series)with it's lack of character development. The characters did not stand out even though the animation is touchingly well done. And to make things worse, they even introduce more characters to enter the disaster of characteristic expressions.
I bet in MKR, you're able to skip a few episodes randomly and not miss much.
I may have very negative things to say, but then I did find this anime series on the average mark. I guess what appealed to me most was the fact that Magic Knight Rayearth basically had everything: cute characters, a cute mascon, mechs, magic, weaponry, bloody "violence", romance, and drama. The only thing missing was probably mystery and of course the adult things. Personally, MKR wasn't bad, but it wasn't great either.

| This is a classic anime for me simply because it was one the first series I ever watched. The reason why I'm not rating this series so high is because I probably watched the series in the dub version, so maybe I should re-evaluate this series when I've watched the subs maybe?
The animation was a bit poor in my opinion, but later on with the 2nd series it picks up a lot better. I am rating sound pretty high because of the intro. I looove the intro song.
The story itself was interesting, I like having the whole idea of going into another world, battling enemies, saving the princess and becoming heros, yay! However, a lot of the series was a bit redundant as to saying "the heart which believes, the power of one's will..." sure it's cheesy, but I guess I would be like that too if I was transported to a different world.
I would re-watch the series again after a while, just to watch the classics again. Clamp as ever is ever good at making a surreal world come to life. I was pulled into the series, and this was a fun series to watch.
