| An excellent, fairly self-contained followup to the Macross 7 TV series. Although it helps to have seen Macross 7 (as well as the other Macross productions) in order to appreciate some of the themes, Dynamite 7 is a fairly self-contained story.
While clearly inspired by Moby Dick, I would actually say this is quite a bit more complex than that novel, to some degree. As a background there is a story of space creatures that come to this planet, Zola, and hunters who hunt them for their energy, but it really just is there as background, and to provide some more people to get in Basara's way. Basara is still a bit hardheaded in this, but he is clearly a bit more mellow after the events of Macross 7, and he's more likeable here.
The animation is clearly OVA quality, and there are some absolutely beautiful animation sequences, up there with Macross Plus to some degree. The soundtrack is also very nice.
I would highly recommend this production.
