| It is quite hard to review Pokemon related things, in my opinion, because you hardly know what to expect from them in the first place.
I found the movie about Lugia to be a little better than this one, because of poor sequencing in Mewtwo Strikes Back. The plot unfolded very rapidly at the start and all the action was saved till the last minute, which made it sort of boring.
Character was quite a problem, as it was for the main series because there's Ash, Misty and Brock...again.
The character design did not strike me as anything spectacular because the characters weren't even cool or cute (the Pokemon were cuter). No character development exists in Mewtwo Strikes Back because it is all done in the TV-series. And Team Rocket exists for absolutely no reason, just appearing here and there to hopefully strike some sort of recognition in Pokemon fans.
Animation was quite a problem for me because scenes were always so deliberately foggy that I had no idea what was going on at first. The colors were also messy but the backgrounds were better than those in the series. The whole notion of Mewtwo escaping from the lab and taking revenge on the human race is quite feasible, except I can't quite understand why Mew is against it. Hardly anything about the motivations of Mew are explained. Again, no 'character development' makes this a weak plot.

| Maybe I'm just a victim of nostalgia but I love this movie, have re-watched it so many times, and still find ways to enjoy it, even if it's laughing at silly lines and pointing out things that are a little unrealistic. I've only seen the dub and there are a few "pika puns" which are so lame they're hilarious. One was James saying "I settle for a taste of that pikachow" and another was Meowth saying "I almost made a clawful mistake". Overall, a moving movie with a whole lot of action and dark atmosphere.

| Ich muss zugeben das ich zur damaligen Zeit auch auf der Pokemonwelle mitgeschwommen bin und die Games mit meinen Freunden bis zur Vergasung zockte. Und daraus ergab sich das ich mir die TV-Serie regelmäßig reinzog und auch die Movies waren damals Pflicht. Heute muss ich drüber lachen aber ich war damals TATSÄCHLICH im Kino und habe mir "Mewtu schlägt zurück" angeschaut, zusammen mit etlichen Hosenscheissern die nicht einmal wussten wie man "Mew und Mewtu" richtig ausspricht... Dieser Film ist eigentlich ein einziges abgedroschens Klischee: Eine Lebensform (in diesem Fall natürlich ein Pokemon) wird von Menschen erschaffen und danach von ihnen ausgenutzt, das führt dazu das es die Mensch hasst und eine Welt nur für sich und alle Pokemon erschaffen will. Unvermeidlich natürlich das Ash & Co. in die Sache reingezogen werden und dem missverstandenen Bösewicht erstmal gehörig den Sinn des Lebens eintrichtern müssen. Abgedroschene Messages ohne Ende, die natürlich so offensichtlich wie möglich sind damit die Kinder auch was dabei lernen, reihen sich aneinander und zwischendrin jagt ein Pokemonfight den Nächsten. Trotz allem steht eins fest: Dieser Pokemon-Movie ist bei weitem kein Blockbuster aber trotzdem um Längen besser als es die TV-Serie jemals sein wird und vor allem ungewohnt "düster" für Pokemonverhältnisse (ich glaube sogar gehört zu haben das manchen Eltern der Film zu "brutal" war *lach*). Vor fast 8 Jahren hat mir der Film richtig gut gefallen (da ich zu dieser Zeit, was Anime angeht, noch grün hinter den Ohren war möge man mir das nachsehen) und auch wenn er mich heute nur noch anödet kann ich mit dem Rating nicht allzu streng sein. Ein paar nette Erinnerungen verbinde ich dann doch noch mit diesem Film, und ich bin Mann genug das zuzugeben! :] Schlagt mich doch! :b

| Well, it's an okay movie. I was never too fond of anime movies based on TV shows; they always seemed to be rip offs of the anime. The animation is okay. I'm not sure about the sound, the American version sucks because well, it's in 'English', but I'm sure the Japanese music is much better. The story isn't very good. Probably the weak point. Basically there is the same characters that are in the TV show, so it's nothing new. I'm surprised no one else has reviewed this....
