I believe that this title is one good addition if you like artsy titles. It is one unique anime. The animation and visuals remind me of the 70s.
The whole anime feels like a dream and in that sense it would be more effective if it wasnt split in so many short episodes but was one story of 15-20 minutes. I've seen similar movies that became so heavy and complicated that they require you to be an art historian or critic to grasp them .On the contrary Tortov never gets very complex and manages to hold its charm till the end.
Short stories filled with beauty. An overall calm anime that definitely will not appeal to everyone because of the pace.
The extra stories are also nice.
One of the experimental titles, that again not many would enjoy since it strains your senses instead of easing them.

| Question: What makes the sky rain?
Answer: When a city full of bad dreams are burned and the smoke goes into the sky.
The Diary of a Certain Traveler is an approximtely 16 minute long single episode about this guy named Tortov Riddle who sees a fantasy world full of imagination and sights. From pig-horses, to cities on frogs, to the rabbit on the moon riding a cable car to the sky.
There is absolutely no spoken dialogue in this episode. All feelings, thoughts, expressions, emotions are portrayed through music, facial expressions, and images - and the occasional silent-film-esque display panel setting the scene. This anime episode is essentially a silent anime film conjured up with random ideas and thoughts.
There really isn't anything spectacularly amazing in this. If it had been produced.. say, 40 years ago, I would think this is a ground breaking short (I've enjoyed a few by Tezuka Osamu). However, for a 2005 production, this project doesn't really carry any meaningful commentary nor have any lasting artistic impact. I did like it for its strong atmospheric feeling that kind of temporarily draws you into it. But it is one of those shorts which you soon forget afterwards.

| Weird anime. If this was 1970 then it would be good, but then there are anime's in the 1960's that are better than this. I am not sure how to rate this. Everything looks old about this anime. The animation lacks colour, which gives you the "old" setting. The sound lacks any seiyyuu-limited to very little BGM and SFX. The Story is good and is meant for kids. Even though its 6 eps, its 2/3mins times 6 so its really just one long anime episode. There is value in the anime, but then very limited to young audiences, even though its enjoyable, its not that memmorable.

| The Diary of Tortov Roddle is a very nice-looking anime. It's style is very reminicent of European animation, but don't let that fool you - even despite it's appearance, it stills feels like an Japanese animation, and throughout I was reminded of Kino no Tabi, my favourite anime. So perhaps for that reason, I fell in love with the cheerful, yet detatched, Tortov and his everyday misadventures. The absence of dialogue is very effective, and the silent-film type signs are touching in their heartfelt honesty. I found myself wishing there were more episodes than just these. It's easy to see why this has won so many awards, and I'll be on the look out for more from this artist/team/whatever.

| Nonsensical and bizarre in the way only a child's tale could be...
The Diary of Tortov Roddle is like Cat Soup Lite. Artistically rendered and very aesthetically impressive for its time (1962?!), this only serves to enhance some of the outlandish and unusual imagery this show hosts. In essence, it is a collection of a few very short tales about a man who wanders around, doing...not much of anything, actually. Only 16 minutes long, it's unclear what the intention of this little OVA could be. It's not flagrantly surreal like Cat Soup is, and gives way to an odd sort of slice-of-life realism. Very odd indeed.
