Jin-Roh is a spinoff of Mamoru Oishii's epic Kereberos Saga. It is set in a fictional era in Japan after World War 2. This Japan never prospered and plunged into a civil war with the two sides being the government and the other side a right wing guerilla group called The Sect. With the civil war ranging on, the government designs a special task force to curb the guerilla menace. The movie begins in the middle of a clash between the two sides, so the viewer is not given much time to think and gets pulled into the story head on without much explaination. The movie has elements of politics but it is mostly drama with heavy emphasis on the mind of a soldier. Telling the tale of Kazuki Fuse, the hero who is unable to kill a suicide bomber who blows herself up in front of him. This results in the loss of face of his team, he is remanded into retraining during which he meets the sister of the suicide bomber (Kei Amamiya). The movie then tells the tale of these two characters who are ploes apart and yet are bound together for reasons which are later revealed in the movie through two twists.

Jin-Roh as said by some professional critics is a retake of the classic children's fable - Little Red Riding Hood in an adult manner with a some subtle twists here and there. The movie's characters are very realsitic and introspective. Many times we are shown how Fuse is coping with his guilt and helplessness. Many of the events take place in his mind where he is likened to a wolf who is hunting a girl. With lots of subtle clues and references to the fable, Jin Roh is a captivating watch. While to story may not be new (if you have read the original work, you might even guess the ending of the movie iwthing the first 45 minutes of the movie), the superb screenplay and the characters will take away all your doubts of the movie being a dud.

To me this movie has good rewatch value. With the numerous references to wolves killing humans, Fuse's condition make this movie give a rewatch value. The first time I saw this movie, All I was able to understand the main story, I missed out the political aspect of the movie. This was due to the numerous characters. (There are a lot of characters in this movie, despite it having a runtime of just 100 minutes. They are however mentioned in passing and do not have much screen time. Some characters operate exclusively from the background and are only referred to.) The second rewatch helped in understanding this aspect of the movie. It also allowed me to understand the movie better and make me appreciate the Fuse and Kei's relationship.

"We are not men disguised as mere dogs. We are wolves disguised as men"

Up until its very end Jin-Roh looks like a pretty mediocore show. There are characters, but they aren't overly special, nor too interesting. The story seems to be about some political struggle between anti-riot organisations and a person from elite anti-terrorist troops, Jin-Roh, the wolf brigade, who seems to have some trouble answering his moral questions lately. Up until the end, though... Up until the end. When there was around 10 minutes left to the ending of the show, there is a twist, and hell, what a twist it is. It's been awhile since I was so surprised that my jaw nearly literaly dropped the floor. Really, I didn't, no, I couldn't expect something like that at all. That twist was actually so satisfying that it raised story score by while two points.

If you're up for a show with some political struggles, or a show with some action consisting of modern weapons and shooting stuff, then give this show a shot. Even though at times it gets slightly boring, you will very well forget anything bad about this show after you'll experience The Twist.

The story seems a bit cliche (government agency conspiracies) but I enjoyed it due to its darker conclusion and fairy tale association.

I was wanting a bit more of a thought provoking movie but I guess you cant have everything right? While everybody enjoys the good double twist it has been done many times. This does not come close to GIS

The character realization of the dissimilarities between beast & man came too late for me... but what can you do, the creators needed it to be really suspensful during the ending... just didnt do it for me. If they had him realize earlier throughout the plot and had him create his own war both against the brigade and the govt than I would have enjoyed the movie a bit more. And if both the main character and the girl were to die that would have been superb.

Besides some personal preference, good anime overall.

When I heard that the same people who did Ghost in the Shell made this anime, I knew what to expect. Jin-Roh is a psychological anime that is somewhat confusing the first time through, but probably makes more sense the second time around. My somewhat low scores reflect my confusion the first time I watched this anime.

The animation for this series is excellent because it is realistic. Traditionally I enjoy the standard anime girl/guy look with spiky blue hair and huge eyes, but this series called for a more realistic approach and it delivered. The characters are Japanese and they actually look Japanese. Everyone in the anime had black hair, thinner eyes and darker skin. The backgrounds were also very detailed and fitting.

Story and Character are both decent, but I found them too confusing to be really enjoyable. It turns our that I guessed right about what was happening for most of the movie, but that fact that I still felt confused and wasn't sure what was going on hampered my enjoyment. The characters' motives and actions also confused me. They were consistent, and once I understood what was going on I realized that it was a movie of depth and character, but to be enjoyable it should make at least some sense the first time through.

Over all, it is an interesting movie that I should enjoy more if I watch it again.

Average Score = 7

Overall, I think that this film has many positive aspects. It had an interesting story, with some nice developments that led the user to the ending... and the fairy tale theme was well aligned.

However, being a fan of Oshii Mamoru's other works, my expectations of this film were set far too high. I expected something profound in the plot that would make the viewer change his or her world view. While that didn't happen, this movie can still be considered a nice work of art.

A sad story with dark, deep, cruel and serious atmosphere, probably a little depressing. It explores the nature of man as either beast or human.

The drawing of the movie is sharp and clear, with kinda unique style of drawing. realistic character desiqns, backrounds etc.

A story is really, really great with elements of politics, action and romance, (psychology). Violent and sad story about secret special unit, rebellion groups. The symbolisms just add to the multiple themes of the movie.

Character development is big part of the movie because it mainly follows one's life, during the events. There aren't much dialogue in the movie, so we learn from the main character through his acts.

Sounds of the movie fit the scenes really well and rise the mood to the roof.

This is one of the movies every body should see, I have seen it many times and I would watch it again any time if I'm in kinda sad mood, or just whis to see some real nice done movie, with great plot and characters.

I think that this movie is made for those who like drama and dark movies. I find this movie dark, cold and in some points i think it's even depressive... In the beginning i find this movie good and thought that it's going to be very interesting,BUT after I had watched it maybe 30 mins. I was so bored. The ending is pretty sad and after I had watched this movie I wondered that what really happened in it. I guess I was so bored of the movie that it took my mind somewhere else.

The animation ís sharp and clean but I didn't like the drawing style.

Sounds of the movie are pretty hard to review because there weren't really music into it.

story... what could I say about it. Very sad and deep story about a man who is a beast at his heart... It just didn't work at all.

The characters were boring. couple of men and girls who didn't really have any interesting personalitys.

I could say that the value of the movie isn't so good. I will not watch this movie again...

This movie is well ahead of its time, everything has just been so wonderfully done, everything from the animation to the way the story unfolds is just stunning. The use of gore to put in a disturbing factor hasnt been over done, the music doesnt intrude on the mood of the movie, and infact compliments the movie so well in so many places you hardly relise its there. all in all a great movie

The first time I came across Jin-Roh, I was your casual anime/DBZ fanatic, thus impressed by the character design and wowed by the violence and action scenes. Oh yeah, and there was some reference to Red Riding Hood but whatever…blood and guts.
At least that’s what I remember of it.

Watching it four years later, I’ve evolved my standards and judge an anime as a whole, not solely based on fanservice or violence. In fact, anime that rely on these things singly to get by now irk me. Its very pleasant that, in watching Jin-Roh with a critical eye, I can still declare it as impressive.

The animation is still very pleasant, with realistic character designs, backgrounds, and action scenes. It reminds me of an upgraded-90’s style anime movie (non-ghibli of course). Its also spattered here and there with powerful imagery and subtle visual symbolisms. Although I feel that these two points help more for the story.

After all, the story is complex anyway. The Capital Police Special Unit has been under heavy criticism for a long length of time, and the newest muck up has given even more reason to abolish it. However, in secret the Special Unit is appreciated… or even honored…by the force for its continuous victories against the Sect, a rebellious group. The decision comes to put the blame upon Constable Fuse, who becomes thrust into a dense trap. The symbolisms just add to the multiple themes of the movie, such as traumatic experiences inflicting permanent damage on the mind, terrorist ideology (dying for the cause), and a human vs. beast concept.

The first and later examples are both exhibited by Fuse, the fall guy and thus protagonist of the movie. With very little dialogue in the movie, we learn most about Fuse through his actions and the opinions of others. He eventually becomes the wolf that is symbolized throughout the movie, and just as any beast would do, he becomes vicious when cornered. Its therefore ironic that the “Red Riding hood” whom he has befriended becomes such a close character. Naïve and confused, the “sister” of the girl Fuse saw die certainly plays the part of the Red Riding hood well (but fits into a more realistic ending than in the original fairy tale).

I left the movie in a different state of mind. Jin-Roh displays a sad-but-true view of the human character, the cold and beastlike side of us that is intent on survival. Overall, I suggest it to any Oshii fan, it seems his directions in movies like this and GITS always creates something above the norm.

This movie is very dark and a bit depressing strewn with subtle imagery almost no one will care about or notice. It explores the nature of man as either beast or human. Can someone who's a beast ever be a human? Or is it all just farse as humans hide amongs beasts and beasts amongst men? The story itself is slow paced and at times quite bloody, with a few very perverse scenes that show the beast in trained military men.

The characters themselves are very forgettable, and the main character spends most of the movie obsessing over a girl who blew herself up in front of him. Everyone considers him a beast, so why did he not shoot the girl? This is the mystery of the movie--whether this character, Fuse, is a beast or a human. By the end, the story does get interesting and conspiracies unfold, but the ending is quite the opposite of what the audience would hope for--and thus it is disappointing and depressing. I personally expected an action-packed war story, but instead I got this slow, weird story.

This anime explores the darkest areas of human deception and its consequences. All characters defy morality and emotion. There are plot twist around every corner of this anime along with dark and stark realism. This work should be compared along with Ghibli greats but it never gets enough credit due to its extremely dark nature and very serious tone...

This anime blurred the line between reality and anime as you watch it. Animation is stylish and very life like. The style fits perfectly into the haunting mood of the anime. Job well done. however due to this some people may not like it. This depends entirely on a person preference.

Music definetely takes the low on this one. There isn't much music used most of the times. Hoever when it is used it does work very well. This is a minor problem i had.

Now the story is quite possibly one of the most complex storyline in all anime as numerous plot twists are introduced. The story is DARK and many times misleading. therefore you HAVE to pay close attention at all time to really grasp the anime. again if you don't like depressing and deceptive drama you will not like the story.

Characters are so real in this anime to the point of mundane. i surely did not find them mundane but real. This anime really is about REALISM and due to it some may argue that this anime lacks emotion. I thought exactly the opposite as the story progressed. and the ending is one of the most powerful and emoitonal ending i've seen...

I'm a big fan of this anime however this anime really is about its own style. Therefore many are bound to be turned away by it. But if you don't mind deceptive, dark, and powerful drama this anime is not to be missed. I think this anime is one of the underrated animes, but this one deserves to be compared with the greats.

Well i would say Jin-Roh is the typical Production IG from the most points of view, strong and weak points.

Animation:
Well they really manage to depict a very belivable alternate 60s world, with detail, beautiful backgrounds filled with people and everything you would want from a high budget movie. The alternate history path is revealed through the many german influences that can be seen everywhere andthat suggest that the nazis won WW2, such examples as german cars, books, all the way to the Capital Polices guns and uniforms.... however my main problem with the animation is that it doesn't show enough emotion, a very common thing aong Production IG's works.

Sound:
Well this is another weak point... the voice acting is very monotone and boring, it lacks life and dramatism, again as in most Production IG works... The sound effects are good but background music is almost inexistent emphatizing even more the state of boredom.

Story:
A pretty smart story with good elements of action, politics psychology, mystery and romance. It gets high points for it's politic backclashes and planning, depiction of social unrest, for the bloody action, plot twists, and for the basic idea and psychologic debate around wich the action revolves, over the condition and relation of the "wolves and humans" related with the old story of "Little Red Riding Hood" (aldough in the end i just realized the hole symbolic wolf-human debate was an exageration without any real connections).... but it really fails to deliver a story that could be called emotional, since it lacks that sence of sentiment.

Aldough a logic story, there were some things that bothered me, mostly concerning the Special Units... like those bullet proof suits wich just seem to be an exageration, as well as the usage in combat of those machine guns (wich really look like the german MG 43 or 34 machine-guns... heavy things that are used as a suport weapon and not as an assault since it's to bulky to be used in an unright position), they should have used the german MP7 wich they showed during training since it's a lot more mobile (the germn Mp7 was the first assault-riffle in the world, the predecessor of Ak-47 and M16).. if you add up the very heavy armour suits, the machine-gun, and those backpacks you get a very very heavy equipement that in the real would would probably never be used... since soldiers prefer mobility.

Characters:
Well it all focuses around the main character Fuse and so he gets the biggest atention and developement, the rest of the characters are nothing but ways of developing his actions and feelings, from his friends to the girl he loves... even so Fuse seemed, to me, to be a very boring character.

Value and enjoyement:
Well it is worth watching... It is a perfect example of Production IG's creations... the computer logic and lack of sentiment everywhere.

I watched this movie with some sort of emotional detachment. Although the movie is marvellously executed, there are very few characters that one can sympathize with. As a result, at the end, I felt like something was missing as a whole.

First of all, this anime is beautifully done. The details in the animation, from the weight shifting of the car, to the movements of the water, responses to wind, and shockwaves of the explosions, everything is done superbly realistically. Furthermore, the movie's atmosphere extremeley well enhanced by the mood-capturing music, and well placed sound-effects. There is no doubt that this movie is nearly flawless in these technical aspects.

However, there is something about this story that irks me. Something missing. It is most likely due to the complex nature of this theme and the fact that this movie does not bother to explain every little nuance that there is something missing. For example, I can't exactly put my finger and explain properly what happens in the storyline. The background story and setting fades in the presence of some overarching theme. There is no solid emotional resolution, not to mention the ending. The only aspect of setting I managed to exact was the sense of a war time atmosphere, the sense of a Wolf fighting for something, and the lone action of some man.

It is an artistic wonder in its presentation but it misses a sense of emotional value, solid structure, and personal attachment. I enjoyed this movie because it was artistically beautiful, but I don't think it has any real meaning to it. Probably inspired by the awe-inspiring lone nature of wolves, Jin Roh is more of an artistic work that focuses more on essences rather than solid events.

Ok, first things first. Don’t watch this movie expecting an all-out action-fest. It’s not that type of film. Although there are some fantastic action scenes this is first and foremost an emotional drama and in my opinion one of the greatest movies ever made.

To wind a story around the threads of the Little Red Riding Hood fable into a political setting and make it this good took real genius. But, as with every Oshii movie this will not appeal to everyone. The setting for this film is very dark and bleak and the textures used in the animation and the amazing score by Hajime Mizoguchi reflect this superbly.

All of the characters seem to fit well with the story making this more life-like, hence some people’s view that this would’ve been better as a live action movie. Personally, I think it’s just fine as it is. I hope Hollywood never gets anywhere near this as you know they’d change that ending.

Jin-Roh which literatly mean "Man-Wolf" tells a story of a post war Japan with civil uprising. The conflicts between various agency in the forces. Intelligence and counter-intellegence is the name of the game. One could see the foreshadow of Ghost in the Shell in this piece of art. Beautifully craft yet somewhat suffocating to watch as the protagonist seems unable to free himself from his own consscience. To hunt or to be hunted. Well made anime with plots and careful attention paid to details. Especially the 'motions' of those characters. Typical of those Ghost in the shell (GITS) masters.

The anime Jin-Roh is rife with symbolism and tells a dark story of stark inhumanity hidden under the guise of Little Red Riding Hood. If one dips a bit lower and find what is hiding beneath that innocuous children's tale, one will find a sinister and violent kernel that will remain a part of you for a long time after the end credits appears.

Jin-Roh is so superbly told in the frame of alternate Japanese history that deviates right from the so called "Great Defeat". There are some parallels that aspires to the actual turn of events in setting up this startling story, if I am not mistaken. In fact, Japanese did rule out the use of military force other than for the right of self-preservation after WWII, and this important guiding line has been ingrained right into their constitution.

However, in Jin-Roh, the throes of civil upheavals in Japan put that very foundation at tremendous risk of anarchy. The special paramilitary unit was thus mobilized, and administered brutal purge of the anti-government forces...

As the era of peace approaches, the government looks to clean up the underhanded and arcahic relics of their turbulent past. The special unit force sticks out like a sore thumb, among other things. After the event where a local anti-riot police force was upstaged and embarrassed by them, the powers that be in the government seeks to scrap the force, by any means neccessary.

What could the special force do for their own act of self-preservation? You will see the beastily struggle for survival and the full spectacle of inhumanity sprawled out like a gloom of darkness over the entire length of this anime. If the word 'depression' is ever animated, Jin-Roh would be its closest synonym.

This is a grippingly powerful film intended for mature audiences. I was really amazed at this film and its message. Exellent directing, and superb storytelling. It's filled with twists and conspiracys, but not so much that it will leave you confused. The idea about a wolf in humans clothing offers ineresting, if not chilling, insight about the dillema many people who have given their humanity for a cause face. The ending just left me drained. This is definitally not for anyone looking for a happy ending, or anyone who wants mindless entertainment. I suspect this film is not higher on the chart because it is simply to mature and/or heavy for some. Really an amazing film.

Preface: it's done by the same studio that did 'Ghost in the Shell' and 'FLCL' ('Furi Kuri'), if that makes it more enticing.
This is the greatest work of art I have ever been exposed to. Yes, that's a bold statement. Yes, I understand that by making it I go down in your esteem, as anyone who makes such a claim clearly doesn't understand that said claim will change in the future, has already doneso no doubt a number of times, and is therefore so ephemeral as to cause annoyance by it's simple presence on the written page. HOWEVER, this is the greatest work of art I have ever seen! Better than 'Evangelion'! Better than Wong Kar Wai's 'Happy Together'! Better than Kubrick's 'The Shining'! Better than Picasso's 'Guernica'! Better than any Led Zeppelin or Beatle's album! You get the picture, right?
This movie ranks as my all-time number one for so many reasons that I'm going to get bogged down trying to state them all, and I'm sure you don't really care to hear them all (if you do, e-mail me and I'll tell you). Basically, this movie has floored me time and again by it's depth in terms of plot and characters. The script is so unimaginably good, as the protagonist, Fuse, has or cultivates such deep, rich relationships with the others in the film that you have to watch it over and over to understand all of the nuances.
And there's so much going on in terms of foreshadowing, hints given by the creator, Mamoru Oshii, that every time I've watched it I've seen something, learned something new that made the movie that much more fulfilling. The theme of Fuse and what he is, basically what it means to be human, the way it's wrapped into the (traditional) Grimm Brother's 'Little Red Ridinghood' story, is simply amazing.
And the supporting characters are just as deep, whether you look at his old buddy from the academy, his mentor, or his love interest. It's just mindboggling how flawless this movie is.
The directing and cinematagraphy are just flat-out amazing as well. I just can't say enough about this movie. Please watch it, you will not regret it.
