| For a series with only average sound and animation this is still an excellent series and a great way to introduce people to the quirky side of anime humor. Good characters and an offbeat writer resulted in a series that rarely takes itself seriously, but manages to shine anyways.

| I got overhyped over this. Many reasonable people with similar taste as me talked about this like it's the second coming. And it sounded like that: a very funny scifi series with good characters and gut ripping fun with the conventions of traditional scifi. Unfortunately, for me it was only slightly amusing with some great moments and most characters never felt close to me thus leading to a slight disappointment.
One thing that the series does very well is make fun of heroic space captains. Tylor is the complete antithesis of a captain ready for adventures and glorious battles against overwhelming enemies. The fun part is that he bumps into these things and doesn't stress muchabout them. Let things solve themselves. They will some way or another. This leads to probably the greatest space battle of all times in episode 23. It also creates a nice relaxed feeling to the series and leaves the viewer wondering what solution emerges to Tylor's problems.
Now what comes to humor, maybe the mood is a bit too relaxed. The series is quite fun all the time but manages pull laughs seldomly. Source of the humor are of course the characters: how Tylor reacts to situations and how others react to Tylor. It's also the way to measure the development of the characters. As the series starts the crew is very sceptical of Tylor doubting his every decision and wanting to get rid of him. However as things develop each crew member starts to understand that Tylor is actually very concerned about them and vice versa when Tylor gets into trouble the crew is worried about him. It's quite a nice relationship they got going. Three of the crew members are quite interesting: Yamamoto, the EXO, Yuriko, the potential love interest and Harumi, the nurse. Rest of them are funny but I didn't find them too interesting. Other notable thing is the relationship between Tylor and the enemy empress Asalyn. Honestly, Asalyn is just too cute as a too-young-empress in need of a friend.
Story is somewhat lacking too. The series never really hooked me up. Once an episode is well under way, it's catchy because of the anticipation of the unanticipated solution but I found myself somewhat unmotivated to start a new episode. The story moves on like it wouldn't move at all. The war as a whole has little influence on the happenings. It starts at the beginning and ends at the end and just is in the middle. The real ending however is quite nice and sums up the series well.
Tylor is a pretty old series from the early 90's but it still looks quite good. Space battles look impressive enough and the characters have a pleasant look and expressive faces. Opening and ending songs aren't that great but the BGM does it's job.
So I say it's a disappointment and don't manage to to figure out anything greatly disappointing. That's the problem: I would love to like it but I simply don't. There was too much work to watch the next episode to make it an enjoyable series.

| (Rightstuff version. Japanese cast)
One other title I put aside 1 year ago because I had watched only 2 dubbed episodes and found them mediocre. So I decided to give it another try.
I have to say that after watching the series I felt a little dissapointed since it had potential to become a much better title. Animation and music were perfect for the genre. Episode 23 was perhaps one of the best anime episodes I saw, with music perfectly composed and directed by Kenji Kawai. The OP was also one of the best I saw. The story in the first 10 episodes had many hilarious moments. Then the story and pacing lose some of the early vigour and turn slow, without harming the enjoyment but not providing anything better either. The last episodes are different than the rest, since they dont occur in space and they resemble the episodes of the series sequel a lot.
The anime and the story reminded me a lot of Crest of the Stars and the Ralgoon must have inspired the Abh a little. If you had the patience to watch the Crest/Banner of the Stars trilogy, then you'll definitely manage to watch this anime and find it enjoyable. It feels like Crest of the Stars in direction (it is based on a novel after all) but with a little more humour and characters not so rigid and closely sticking to the novel. It isnt as funny as Nadesico but it doesnt get ridiculous like it at all.
Instead for patient viewers it can become a rewarding title, if you see all the episodes till the end and slowly learn more about each character. In that respect Irr. Captain Tylor reaches the characters of the 80's animes that were much better and more lively both in voice actors and animation. I watched one episode with the English dub and despite that the voice actors were very good (I prefered Liza Ortiz as Azalyn) the Japanese voices were better and more fluid, as it happens in any dubbed anime. The Japanese cast were too good to be ignored. But if I decide to rewatch the series I'll choose the dub.
Overall, since the series is underrated and not so widely known as other space operas (like....Outlaw Star) I recommend giving it a try. Initially I thought it would be mediocre, but it is a title that shouldnt be judged from the cover since it has some originality few animes tend to offer.

| Sadly, this ended the same way it started – lacking focus, without a direction and leaving the viewer rather unsatisfied. I bore with Captain Tylor, past the first few episodes, thinking there will be a rainbow over the hills, I was right, but the rainbow soon disappeared.
The problem with such an anime of non-sense comedy and stupidity is that what could make it great can so easily break it too. When stupidity is done well, it can be great, as this anime has shown sporadically. But it’s hard to make 26 episodes out of it, so what to do? Bring in a lame storyline of course. Fortunately, the storyline wasn’t too bad, although I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone base on that in a hurry.
With great animation, this could have been something great, but the comedy element needed something else solid. Romance was half broken, storyline was weak and characters felt like clones from other animes. Sometimes, whilst viewing this, it seriously felt like I was time wasting.
Unfortunately, this is an anime without a brilliant start, nor does it finish with a bang. During the middle of this series, I was hopeful, that hope vanished in the last episode, then I realised that there wasn’t much to hope for anyway. Not as pointless as Excel Saga, in fact nowhere near, although still the same effect.

| I wasn't sure what to expect from this TV series, all I knew is it was supposed to be a bit daft, so I was pleasantly surprised at just how much I enjoyed it and what a wonderful ending it had.
It's definitely not your typical sci-fi/space opera fayre, as nothing about it can be taken seriously. It was fun, very amusing and packed with nutball characters that end up being very endearing.
If you want to watch something a little different, then look no further than this ^_^

| Irresponsible Captain Tylor was mostly different from the other comedy/sci-fi genre. It was very funny in an odd way. Tylor was one of the exceptional characters, that always knew exactly what he needed to do, in an unobvious manner, to get that "simple and happy life" he always hoped and dreamed for. Actually, most of the time I would see him as an unpredictable person when it comes to understanding the intentions of his crew and their actions; even though his own aims were very much noticeable. Very gleeful and lazy in most cases, his own luck always seems to amazes me, although some of those events I thought were kind of far-fetched. For that reason, it was just one of those funny ideas that seemed to occur our of nowhere that made the story itself mostly entertaining. As for the animation it wasn’t bad, but the music was unbelievably amazing. Both of the title and ending themes songs were so catchy, it can be very memorable if you fully remained on watching the entire series. I think one of them was called "Downtown Dance" or something. I feel that I should watch it again, because I think it was that good. Highly recommended, especially if you’re into the whole sci-fi/comedy type of anime.

| Very good for its time, with a lot of fun humor and nice characters. Tylor is one of the most fascinating characters I've seen in anime. I had a hard time figuring him out all the way to the end. The rest of the crew of the Soyokaze is definitely the best. Each and everyone has great personalities... from the ditzy cute girls to the wannabe badasses. I liked how this anime started and the storyline seemed good too. However it started to drag in the middle and plot doesnt really go anywhere. The ending had no real closure on any of the issue and I hope thats resolved in the sequel OVA.

| good little series, dont let the fact that its old hold you from giving it a go.
there's this lazy bum who has his own phylosofies on life and believes you should just take it as it comes and enjoy yourself while you can. one day by a few twists and turns, and mostly just luck (something which plays a very large part in the series), he gets drafted into the army to fight the impending alien invaders (who look like elves imo). they give him the oldest ship in the fleet, and the last bunch of people ever expected to be in a ship, as part of his crew.
to begin with, nobody likes him at all, a few times they try to kill him.
whats really great is how everybody changes throughout the series, as they begin to see what this guy is all about. from the get go, tylor is probably the only character that goes through very little change, whereas everybody else, grows monumentaly into better people, people worthy enough to be part of the greatest ship crew in the galaxy.

| A good, fun sci-fi comedy show with some great characters, if not particularly original in many ways.
