| Is this Ghibli movie as Good as Most of the reviews that say so? I don't really think so. For a couple of reasons...
The Animation was average. Considering it was an anime made in 1993, it's not as clear or smooth as the modern animes. But then again, it isn't all that good or pretty. It's Just Okay.
The Sounds were okay as well. Seiyuus did a decent job, and the sounds and music were okay. Nothing particularly Great...
Now the Storyline is more of a slice-of-life, quite a different style compared with the Usual Ghibli's Fantasy Style. & by reading the previous reviews which many seemed positive, i was having high hopes that this anime would amaze me.
But it didn't.
Firstly, I extremely dislike the main girl, Rikako. How Bossy, Mean & Self-Centered Could a Girl Get? Gees, She DOES Show her crying side, her doubtful side, and her slightly-nice side. But then, her niceness doesn't balance up with the negative traits she Shows. & I Seriously can't stand such a personality. But seeing that there were a few scenes that showed she was slightly nicer than usual, it made me think, Geez, Is this Girl Supposed to be the Good Person or Bad Person?! She Seriously annoyed me...
Matsuno was a good person, until he punched Taku, for no reason i could think of. But seeing that he apologised in the end, i kinda forgive him. The only possibly likeable character througout the whole movie is probably Taku... He was probably the most patient, tolerant, nice, & Understanding character of them all. =_=
The storyline was okay. Having set in the theme of high-school romance, and then growing up, seperating and remembering those past memories. The Idea is Good, & Basically, i guess that's the reason why i couldn't totally hate this anime, because it ended so sweetly, i guess, that's the Ghibli Charm...
But then again, The main plot seriously annoyed me. How can anyone stand Falling in Love with such a Bossy Selfish girl like Rikako? Just because she's pretty, she doesn't have much redeeming qualities. & it Annoys me to see all the self-centered stuff she does and how much trouble she causes for the people and characters around her.
Ocean Waves had some dramatic scenes, but not really well made or poweful enough. The only reason why I'm giving a 6 for Enjoyment is because of the Nice Ending. But other than that, i was really displeased with the storyline revolving around That Rikako...
Overall, The Idea is good, The Ending was good. But Gees, the main girl should have been a nicer person. With a plot revolving around such a hate-able character, I Seriously could no t enjoy Ocean Waves, & I can't really understand why many others are giving Ocean Waves ratings of 8s & 9s...
Maybe this is a hit-or-miss anime. But definitely, I would not recommend this anime.

| Ocean Waves is a Ghibli production that tells the story of a couple of senior high school kids in a normal, magic-less world.
Ghibli's little foray into drama proves to be quite successful. To be honest, Ocean Waves doesn't have a lot of things that would make a drama. For one, there aren't many dramatic scenes at all. I wasn't entranced with Ocean Waves as I normally am with anime that i enjoy. There's something really different about ocean waves though. Even if it's hard to tell where the climax is, and none of the characters are built to be particularly lovable, I'm still completely taken by this movie.
Unlike a lot of the more popular Ghibli films (at least, more popular here in the states), Ocean Waves lacks a Disney-trumping-sweetness. It's still completely lighthearted all the way through, just not quite as cute.
I'm a softy for Ghibli animation. I love their character designs, and their non-standard facial expressions.
The sound has a very amusing, and childlike feel to it. It's not exactly for dramatic purposes, but it fits quite well.
The story lacks a definitive climax. Unlike most feature films, Ocean Waves feels a little bit like a mesh of events rather than events pointing in a direction.
The characters are 3 dimensional in both the emotions they express and the way they do so. Their actions seem so natural, and un-exaggerated (I can think of an instance or two that felt unnatural, TV-drama or Anime like, but we're comparing Ocean Waves to its kind here). So many of the intricacies of jealousy, crushes, and other emotions were captured by these characters. The characters have no quirky hooks though. No cuteness to latch onto, no heroism to admire, etc. Ocean Waves does lose something BECAUSE its characters are not as exaggerated. They end up feeling a little bit bland.
The real appeal to Ocean Waves though, is that its nothing but a light hearted story. It won't keep you on the edge of your seat while watching, but after, it feels almost real. It's like a story that your friend told you about a girl he knew.
I'd like to say more about the themes that i also found appealing, even if they were introduced really...really late into the movie, but I'm afraid it may give away too much.

| Like... it's weird, I think this is one of the drama - slice of life genre combination which really has unique storyline, Ghibli studio's have really done it again, none of their work have yet dissapoint me. It's all wonderfull especially this one. from the animation to the sound it's all fit for this movies, and the characters themself are pretty unique unlike many drama type characters.
The only flaws that I think is that this movies is a bit too short, and although the story leaves many curiosity in and after watching the movies which is good in some ways, it also feels a bit left hanging which lead people to be more curious for what happened next even after the ending.
oh, a bit out of review, judging from some review posted for this anime, I think some of people here comments based on subjectivity of like and dislike about the characters, I don't think it's fair to compare like that, because if it's like that then I would give gundam seed a 1/10 scores (well I still give it a bad score, but still within reasonable point of view regardless of the characters or other thing ^_^').

| Actually the first anime by Studio Ghibili where the main roles arent occupied by children but by teenagers and adults. In fact children never make an appearance in the entire movie. Thats what makes this movie different from the rest. Perhaps one of the most serious and realistic movies of that animation studio. But either because of the short duration or some inconsistencies in direction this fails to make an impression like the other realistic films, like Gave of the Fireflies and Only Yesterday. But 72 minutes of it are much more worth than 330 minutes of Kiminozu.

| It isn't a perfect movie but it does have the certain Ghibli charm about it. It is really hard to explain but you just feel good after watching it. My only qualm is that it ends kind of suddenly. Still though, it is definitely an underrated title.

| People who know me behind the mask knows i'm a huge anime fan and that my favorite studio is Ghibli. There's something magical about Ghibli that never fails to facinate me, and this anime didn't disappoint me either. This 70 minute TV special is an intricate story about a person and his past in high school. If you are a college student or older who likes to think back on your past, this anime will be very true and real as it was for me.
This anime is equipped with realism. The characters, dialogue, atmosphere, and behavior are all very life-like. This anime in many ways reminded me of "Only Yesterday". Though the storyline may be different, its style was similar and its works great. The dreamy background animation was excellent for this animation as the water-color like presentation on the skies. This well-rounded and realistic presentation is paired with very good seiyuu work that brings each character to life.
Story is rather simple but in it are messages of growing up and process of realizing ones own feeling. This TV-special does not waste a second of its limited time and makes the best out of it. The characters are fully fleshed out and we see much interaction between the characters. However, since this anime is limited in time, it feels a little bit rushed. I would've liked to see this anime actually take it's time for some of the moments to fully reach its emtional potential. Especially the end really didn't connect to me as strongly as it should have.
This 70 minute Ghibli special is another worthy edition to my Ghibli collection as it should be. Watching this anime will surely get you thinking back on your own past and your experiences. this anime paints a picture of the process of growing up in a sweet fashion and i loved every bit of it.

| Umi ga Kikoeru is the most underrated film by Ghibli, but by no means is it their worst production. Set in a peaceful environment, it's a touching story about deciding whether love or friendship is more important, but unlike what most people would choose nowadays, the main character in this film makes a completely different decision.
I'd have to say that the technical quality of this film is not as good as other Ghibli films where Miyazaki and Hisaishi were involved, but I think it's still acceptable. Nonetheless, superb animation and sound is not what people would look for in Ocean Waves. The characters, the changing relationships between them, and the selflessness and loyalty of Taku are what captivated me to watch this drama.
In our present world where many would rather choose their own happiness than the happiness of others, Umi ga Kikoeru is an enjoyable anime that reminds us of what friendship, love, and sacrifice truly mean.

| If you are a college student or an adult living out life right now, have you ever had one of those days where you look back at some of the events in your high school days and realize the real circumstances of what happened? That is the situation with Ocean Waves, an anime made for TV by Ghibli back in 1993. The movie centers on Morisaku Taku, a college student who looks back on the first time he met his best friend, Matsuno Yutaka, in junior high and the arkward love triangle between himself, Matsuno, and the new girl in school Muto Rikako. This movie has a good amount of realism which would have any teen watching this movie say that this is the life they are experiencing right now as each of the main characters in Ocean Waves have a fleshed out personality. Animation wise, the backgrounds are very lush and detailed though the character animations, particularly their faces, are the usual style of animation. But, they are as lush as the backgrounds. In terms of sound, the seiyuu for each of the characters acted very well and the music gave that impression of arkwardness which teens normally experience which is played during scenes where Morisaku finds himself in an arkward moment, many of whom are with Muto. Unfortunately, this movie isn't part of Ghibli's deal with Disney to dub here in America which is a real shame. Overall, if you like your anime to deliver a realistic slice of life, Ocean Waves will be that kind of anime movie for you.

| Actually one of my favorites from Ghibli, even though this is by Miyazaki's students rather than the big wigs at Ghibli.
Animation direction has got to be one of the best. It is artsy, for one, and using many different techniques as you would expect from students strutting their stuff. The dramatic pauses, character movements, portrayal of real life Kochi, and frame resizing were all appropriate to perfection.
The soundtrack is one of my favorites (tracks 1, 2, 4, 8) which capture the innocent young adult passion so daintily.
The characters were near perfect. Their development was good, but sometimes a little more irrational than irrational teenagers (meaning asking a little more of the sustainence of disbelief). And the faces, well, facial expression were good but the face art looked sometimes inconsistent from certain angles (but applause for trying the many different camera angles)
One of my prized possessions and always a treat to watch this 1.5hr treat.

| Where at first you seem to think that this movie is boring and that this is nothing like what Studio Ghibli should do at all, but as you the movie goes on, this turns out to be a little gem in the rough.
Too many people say this anime as bland, boring and slow. But this is exactly what this movie is trying to accomplish, a slice of life. Kind of like another anime series created afterwards called Boys Be, this anime goes through the teenage life in high school and their romance encounter. Unlike other romance anime, this is not exciting or multi-plotted, but rather, a very realistic view to your first love.
This is easily understood if you are in your late 20s or if you have graduated high school since you have experienced this process already, but to the people still walking this step, they will find this movie boring.
Taku is just the average teenage just like you and me, nice, helpful, semi-intelligent and has a best friend. He goes through his tale with his encounter with a girl called Muto moving from Tokyo. At some point of the movie, you might think that Taku is naive and stupid, but immediately you will think that you have actually done something similar to Taku because you care about the person facing you. Is it love? We don't know, and the movie leave the ending open to the audience for their imagination.
Overall this is a movie that is never about fancy, colourful animation or an exciting plot. But rather a really relaxed view of a high school teenager and his romance encounter. A really different style than most romance anime and surprisingly, very enjoyable if you don't mind the slower pacing of the story.

| Ocean Waves means well, but I found it rather tepid for my tastes. Ghibli stepped out of the usual fantasy mold to create a slice-of-life anime (something of a successor to Only Yesterday, as I gather) and, in attempting to infuse it with its trademark charm, instead created something that feels entirely misplaced and overall lost. This movie fulfills the old standard of 'having its heart in the right place', but in the end everything else is scattered to the four winds.
What I've noticed about the few Ghibli movies I have seen is that they tend to meander; Spirited Away and Princess Mononoke are the two examples that immediately hop to my mind. Because the worlds of these two animes are rich and fantastical, it always provides the protagonists with something to do; however, when a similar approach is taken with Ocean Waves, it causes the anime to feel strangely empty. The anime doesn't occupy itself with any one plot. It has no climax, very little confrontation, and a sporadically-appearing antagonist who turns out to have no relevance by the movie's end. Without any sort of structure to it, it just kind of falls apart, creating little more than a collection of scenes that are both pastoral and plodding. It has a plot, sure, but it doesn't actually bother with it. This is little more than a high school romance without any complication to it.
One of the defining moments in which I categorized the characters was the money-lending scene about ten minutes in. It allowed me to immediately label Morisaki as stupid, manipulable and naive, a label that never really disproved itself as the anime went on. I don't care how nice of a guy you are, you don't just get up and loan 400 dollars to a girl you've never talked to before because she claims she lost her money. It also planted seeds of resentment in me for Rikako early on, and I ended up really disliking her as the movie went on. She is selfish and snotty (not to mention manipulative), and when she wasn't acting in such a manner she was just boring. To be perfectly honest, I think the only reason the guys liked her was because she was pretty. Shallow! Now of course a lot of anime characters exemplify these traits only to find a change of heart and completely rationalize their personality later on, but Rikako is just obnoxious without any sort of explanation. She wasn't even FUN obnoxious. Finally, we have the lifeless Matsuno, whose name I had to look up because they actually only use it about twice throughout the entire movie. Unfortunately, he, along with the rest of the cast, were short-changed as far as characterization goes. Developing compelling casts has never been a problem for Ghibli in the past, and Ocean Waves makes me wonder: what went wrong?
The redeeming factor here is the chemistry between the characters, which is where they truly come to life. Matsuno simply doesn't work without his good buddy Morisaki by his side, and you can't help but appreciate Rikako's brusque treatment of the rumormonger girls around her. In effect, they pretty much only work in tandem.
Despite some fairly glaring flaws, Ocean Waves is a charming and relatively enjoyable movie to sit through. It's not very long (a little less than 70 minutes not counting the end credits), and though I didn't warm up to any of the characters I found myself appreciating the movie's quiet charm and good intentions.

| Oftentimes, I find myself thinking back on things I've done years ago, hitting myself on the head with mistakes and regrets. Why, oh why, did I make a fool of myself at that party at Homecoming? When I look back, it's obvious I should've drunk five beers instead of seven. Why, oh why, didn't I have sex with that hot nameless dude when I was in Hawaii? Looking back, it's obvious I should've got laid. Why, oh why, did I steal that jumpsuit from JCPennies? Looking back, it's obvious I should've stolen the red dress instead. Misgivings and bad memories can be such a pain in the ass sometimes. Guileless and completely unadorned, Ocean Waves manages to take those feelings and simplifies them until you can hardly keep your eyes open. This is not to say that the work is tedious because it isn't. I can best compare this to Quiet Country Cafe. Both have this tranquil, wistful quality that could put you to sleep. But, also like Quiet Country Cafe, I mean this is a good way. Sort of.

| This is the least likeable movie from Ghibli I have seen so far, or no, second least likeable ( I have a ahrd time with Porco Rosso). The animation quality is a wee bit worse than in other older Ghibli productions but over many other movies and easily pass any quality check. The characters are likeable and the sound is good but not perfect. What realy bothers me is the end which comes like a slap in your face. Too soon I'd like it if htere was ten more minutes to clear things up. But on the whole above par but nothing to get exited about, see it if you get the chnace!

| Funny how I didn't even hear about this anime until 2004.
Regardless of the lateness of me watching this, I'm going to try to give as fair of a review as I can for this movie.
Graphically, I'm a little biased against the favor of Ghibli's animation style, but I have my respects for the simplistic artstyle that they're trying to achieve. Overall the artwork is fairly consistent and there's definitely nothing wrong with it.
The tracks all fit very well throughout the course of the anime, an above average OST overall.
The story is somewhat engrossing, told in an interesting flashback manner. A fairly standard love story, simple but it makes its point clear to the audience. Ocean Waves shows a realistic and believable love story to its viewers.
The characters all had sensable interactions with each other thus making this an enjoyable anime.
Sure, this is a condensed love story, but it's a good condensed love story. I'd recommend it to anybody who's got an hour and 12 minutes to spare.

| My first step into non-dubbed Ghibli.
Well it wasn't bad and was enjoayble considering its total run time. Worth checking out if you don't mind a condensed version of a high school romance.
Still it raised some pressing questions like what is the legal drinking age in Japan? I was furious when the decided to partake of alcohol. In the end though it felt like sort of an exhibition drill for Ghibli to tryout new talent since the "Man" who is creditted Ghibli's greatness sat on the sidelines for this one.
No major complaints refreshing change in terms of animation that prevades anime at this time.
I look forward to seeing more Ghibli as it was meant to be seen, not dubbed.

| Funny how a "lesser" Ghibli work still ranks high in the grand scheme of things. While too small in scope and too slow-paced to keep up with the parade of big-budget features that the famed studio has produced over the years, Ocean Waves is still a gentle, well-crafted drama that I feel is worth your time.

| I must be odd, because I liked this more than most Ghibli movies. Most Ghibli movies make me feel like I'm supposed to like it just because it's weird in that special Ghibli way. Its depiction of high school emotions is spot on, and certainly got me reminiscent. People are right in saying very little happens...if you look it's pretty amazing how much time they spend letting you look at scenery while little or no dialogue goes on. But despite, or perhaps because of this, the timing for everything is spot on. The greatest strength of this movie is definitely the range of emotions the characters go through and the intensity of them, often with very few verbal cues. Very realistic, but it left me scratching my head more than once as I tried to figure out exactly what everyone was thinking or feeling. Filtered through the double irrationality of youth and love though, it all makes sense though. The voice acting really excels as well and carries the emotion when needed.

| This is just a simple drama really. It's pretty much about a troubled girl (Rikako) and a couple of guys (Taku and Matsuo) who have a thing for her. It's not that spectacular, as there's nothing totally suprising or amazing, but I think it does a good job for something that simplistic.
The characters are quite well done and while story is only average, it is much better and enjoyable than watching a soap opera (easily).
I think, however, that those who can relate to the characters will like this one and those who can't will probably see it as only mediocre.

| Not really half-bad for a STUDENT film. It's Ghibli, but its done by Ghibli trainee artists, not Miyazaki Hayao. I think this was more of a showpiece to let them show their prowress. Ocean Waves may not be the most rich or polished Ghibli gem to date, but it's much like an uncut diamond. I think we have plenty to look forward to from the next generation of Ghibli artists.

| Sure, it's not quite as fantastic as other Ghibli productions but it's still a very moving and greatly animated piece. It depicts high school life more realisticially than any other anime has, but that's also one of it's downfalls because in doing so it also gets kinda boring. Good thing this was a short movie instead of a 2 hour film.
