| As most reviews here mention, this is a mediocre movie. The only supposed good thing was the animation and visuals. Though making the characters so detailed was another factor in destroying them. The TV series characters were funny because they were ugly animated and designed and also because the voice actors had more freedom. But here, though it features the same voice actors of the TV series, they dont perform that well. Had probably to do with the short length.
As for the story...Initially I thought the movie would feature the same characters of the series to be inside Nadesico battling the forces from Jupiter. But nothing of that sort occurs. Akito and Yurika are missing and only Ruri appears. In fact it takes a while till they all gather together but then it is too late. Instead it features some poorly developed story countless times repeated. Though the direction isnt bad the script is squeezed for such a short length.
The movie was done just for commercial reasons and the freshness of the series is completely missing and even the jokes are forced and cold.
This isnt the Nadesico I liked. I'd recommend it only to hardcore fans. As an introduction better read the short manga. Another classic example of movie sequels of series that were mediocre (Nadia, Utena, Evangelion, Silent Mobius etc). Worth watching only once

| Animation and sound has been a small improvement over the anime series, but still looks dated. Characters and mechas looked good with its detailed shadowing, fine drawings, and great frame rates, but that's the only improvement I see.
For sound, I watched the English dubbed version. I didn't notice any great improvements, but just like the animation, I assume it is better.
The story had great potential, with the mysteries of Akito and Yurika, but all the time spent is put into the wrong places. Too much time was wasted in introduction, little on climatic and conclusion scenes. I also expected the "great battle scene" to be highly anticipating, but left me disappointed. The ending the same. I truely wished the best for this anime; it had great potential to be.
It's 2 years after the series ended. Since this is a movie for a finished anime series, there's not much character development. The same characters are shown here again. One character I liked was the changed Akito, but there wasn't any focus on him or his thoughts.
As much I liked the new elements in this movie, I felt I was cheated. There's still a lot of questions to be answered, like how exactly did Akito and Yurika get abducted (a flashback would be nice) or what will happen to Akito and Yurika. Even Nadesico fans would feel cheated, but at least it is a nice continuation that brings back everybody.

| You must watch the series before attempting this. There is a lot of improvement over the anime and things which you will not forget from the anime is here. All the good from the anime is placed, and all the bad is thrown away.

| I think the anime is much better than this movie. Much more enjoyment in the anime than the movie. I wish they'd showed what ever happen after Yurika wakes up, i mean Akito went to all that to save her and at the end, he doesnt say anything and just leaves. this movie leaves me hanging.

| Very rarely is a OVA better then the original TV series, but that is the case for Nadesico.
The original cast comes back along with some new characters and go off on another save the world adventure. Now, what sets this one apart from the old silly/annoying series is that a few of the characters had some serious personality over hauls. Ruri has become a lot more mature, Akito has become goth and dark, and a number of characters have had some physical changes, which was a improvement in my opinion.
Music is nice, especially the battle ones. Animation is well done considering its release date and in general, there isn't much about this anime that I didn't like.
The only complaint that I do have is that Ruri's voice absolutely SHOULD NOT be the one that dominates in this anime. It's very soft and mono toned, therefore, boring and puts me to sleep. I understand that she was the main character this time around due to fan service, but it has taken a toll on what was a good OVA.

| I liked the tone of this movie a lot more than the original show's. I liked the progession of the characters. I wish that it would have been a 13 episode TV show. The plot is way too condensed and it had some potential.

| How should I put this...I have mixed feelings after viewing this show. It's a movie with great potential but yet with numerous flaws.
The animation is excellent. No complains there. A huge improvement from the TV series.
The sound was rather plain, except for the end theme which was nice. There were hardly any exciting theme songs during the heat of the battle, while many music pieces were recycled from the TV series.
Now, the story itself. Prince of Darkness allows the viewer to see the world of Nadesico through a much darker perspective. Manipulation of politics, backstabbing...monopolizing technology of boson jumping etc...it's complex enough to keep the anime interesting, but it's no space soap opera. The major problem with this movie is the timing. It felt...very rushed. It felt like watching a 26 episodes of epic space adventure condensed into 1 hr. 15 min show. Without the proper amount of time to sort things out, you found any elements of the story unexplained. Some cool (or could've been interesting) fight scenes were cut short due to time restrain (esp the fight between Akito and the Martian Sucessor). A big minus there. Well, they did succeed in creating numerous symbolisms within the movie (like when Akito's mech weeped oil tears...deep)
The characters were well-drawn and looked very mature. The characters were relatively the same as the TV series, except for Ruri and Akito. Ruri is no longer the cynical character of the show and is rather serious and rigid in the movie. Akito is completely changed, no questions about that. If you want to know why, I won't spoil it for you :) Just be warned, this movie is not to resolve any unanwsered questions left by the TV series, but rather...create another major plot all over again. I found the ending of Prince of Darkness to be very open...open to imagination of the viewers as to how the saga of Nadesico would end. Either the producers succeed in accomplishing that or they failed to convey a deep meaningful ending.
The value and enjoyment received high marks. It was the producers' attempt to create something different from the original series, I'll give them credit for that. But you might find the light hearted, comical Nadesico TV series (I mean like, for heaven sake, remember how easy-going the ending of the TV series was) to be a huge gap from the dark, mysterious universe that Prince of Darkness introduces.

| I loved the series Martian Successor Nadesico, but this movie doesn't live up to its legacy. The movie, though beautifully drawn and with the same brilliant voices as the original show, doesn't mesh well with the original show. The characters, especially Akito, acted completely out of character throughout most of the film. Also, the movie feels lacking without the hysterical antics of the supporting cast, who have diminished roles. If you always wanted Nadesico to be a serious drama sort of anime, you'll probably like this movie; but if you like comedy, I wouldn't recommend seeing this.

| Nadesico the movie suffers from a lot of the symtoms that made the series so rubbish. While the production seem improved, it still doesn't feel anything like a movie from the late 90's. This movie is even less impressive than the series. An utterly confusing start when I can't figure what's going, a build up to something that vaguely resembles exciting showdown, and then a rather anti-climatic finish leaving me with a feeling of that the movie has ended prematurely. It was too short. I thought the story was going to develop into something interesting like the series, but after a puzzling beginning, the whole thing turned out to be stupidly simple - it's just a very straight forward old crew defeats new threat storyline. And of course, no Genkiganga, almost the only source of comedy from the series.
The only thing of value to fans of the series is to see how the crew have moved on since then. Otherwise not worth watching.

| If you desire a conclusion to the sucky ass TV series, then avoid this slop. Instead of providing closure, this completely unnecessary movie gives nothing save a yawn-inducing “plot,” boring characters, and completely unfunny “humor.”

| Well, this is the all I've seen related to Nadesico. I've never seen any of the series. I think, however that this movie was not confusing, even if this is your 'first contact' with Nadesico world. One positive point.
Now, since I started by mentioning the 'positive aspects' first, let's see what else is good in this movie. We have the animation... I think it was quite erm... I wouldn't say 'breath-taking'... maybe even impressive is too good of a word... ok, mildly impressive then. Very good. I liked the backgrounds and the colors very much. The character designs were a little weird but not enough to make me not like the animation style. Another good thing, was actually... a character. Yes, I actually liked Ruri. She's misterious and oddly wise for her age... then again she is this genius child that pilotes a giant robot.
Well, there is where good things end. You have average sound, good voice acting...and I'll concede it, a nice music, but not outstanding, that's for sure.
The characters are a bad aspect. Defenitly. There are too many characters in my opinion. Some of them are silly (most of the girls) while the guy is an...well... idiot. Really. Like I said before the only good character I can think of is Ruri; the other characters are uterly stupid and, some even unnecessary). You have a good character development though. I mean, they HAVE EMOTIONS (although I don't like their attitudes)! YAY! And as the story gets a little dramatic, you get to see them. Lol
The story. Ah, well,I really, really, don't appreciate stories with giant robots. I dislike mecha anime in general. But at least, in this movie you don't see them fighting some alien monsters. Not that the giant robots commanded by the martians are that different. So, the story is not very unusual. There is, of course, the tragic romance, that helps make the story more interesting, but, it is a mecha anime and well... nothing can change that or the fact that the plot is so very unoriginal.
Overall, Prince of Darkness is just your average mecha movie, with standard story and characters for this genre of anime. It's not as bad as other mecha animes I've seen, but it certainly is not what I would consider good.

| The Nadescio movie is interesting as far as seeing what happened after the events of the T.V. series. Seeing Ruri grown up was interesting and I liked the fact that most of the origional crew was re-assembled. To find out more read my full review.

| I was a fan of the series, but I was rather disappointed by the film for several reasons.
First, unlike the great bulk of the series's Japanese audience, I was never especially fond of Ruri -- I may be one of only a few, but I am personally none too interested in the 'preternaturally calm/quiet (possibly artificially-generated) lavender-haired-albino prodigy girl' anime archetype. I thought her character provided some nice deadpan laughs in the series, but didn't have enough depth to form the center of a feature film.
Also, one of the things I liked about the original was its blend of sci-fi and very slightly romantic comedy. This film lacks the laughs of the show almost entirely, aiming for harder sci-fi.
Finally, I think there is too much unexplained backstory packed into this film, and we're left with too many unexplained loose ends. I was frankly sort of bored and confused about what the hell was really going on.
I must admit, though, that my confusion may have something to do with the fact that I saw the Hong Kong version of this film, which was badly subtitled, and my Japanese is limited. I hope the US release was better translated.

| This is a continuation of the series, one of the best ever created, and the movie does a good job of keeping that high level of craftmanship. As such, though, you should watch the series before you watch this since it doesn't recap anything or anyone, rather it dives right in, so much so that even if you've seen the series you might be a little rattled. Also, many of the main characters are pushed into the backround in terms of screen time, but they nonetheless carry a lot of weight in terms of the story's depth, which makes it all the more important to have seen the series so that you are up to speed and will understand the themes of the movie (loss of innocence, loyalty, an individual's role in society, how the ties that bind can change, and stay the same, etc). I found this (main characters pushed to backround) very intriguing, as the movie was still faithful their fanbase, giving them a movie that still felt like the same world, only one that (as real worlds do) has changed as time has gone on. Again, watch the series first, and this anime is much more shocking.
Also, I should note that you would be wise to watch this more than once before registering your verdict. Most anime movies that are offshoots of series demand this in my opinion, as there is always a difficult transition from a series atmosphere to that of a movie. It's like reading a book and then watching a movie based on it and saying it wasn't as good - you haven't accepted it on it's own terms, you're simply comparing through a lense of almost insurmountable emotional attachment which has built up by your love of the book (or in this case series). Once you go back and are able to see it for what it is, a movie and not a series, you will see just how good it is. This holds true for most anime movies I've watched, like this one, Cowboy Bebop's, etc. I don't mean to shortchange it though - I did enjoy them a lot the first time through, I just needed a bit more time to gain a more objective perspective so I could really see what the creators/authors/directors of the movie were trying to do, then I enjoyed it that much more.

| When I first watched this it really blew me away, It had everything I expected and more, it really does the series justice. I was surprised to see how much some characters had changed, while at the same time others stayed exactly the same. Fans of the series will love the movie it has the same flavor of series, and at the same time it has a taste all of it's own.
Likes: The movie is just as good as the series was, it lives up to the name Nadesico.
Dislikes: The only thing I don't like is that this movie marks the end of Nadesico.
Animation
Excellent, the fighting scenes are mind blowing and the character designs are great. The animation is crisp and clean.
Sound
Clear dialogue, great sound effects, and even better music.
Story
The plot is well thought out, and even adds some mystery to the movie, it will keep your eyes glued to the screen.
Even if you haven't watched the series yet, I still recommend getting this, but if you've seen the series already don't hesitate on getting this one.
The Breakdown
If you were a fan of the series then you won't be disappointed. Although I still recommend adding it to the shelf even if you've never seen the TV series.

| A rather dark twist to the happy-go-merry Martian Successor Nadesico. The animation is a lot nicer and the sound is still fantastic, but what i found even better was its story line. Seriously if they had made a 2nd season with this story, it would have been a blow out bigger than NGE (yea yea im not a fan of NGE blow me..jk).
However i still found the lack of really good mecha battle a bit...well...lacking. The battleship scenes are better than ever but i still think it would have been a lot better if this was turned into a series.

| Watched this movie straight after i finish the series. Completely different from the series. It was HORRIBLE. Little humour and towards a darker side of the story espc akito's character--so cold! and..heck! why no reunion btw akito and yurika? Totally cut me off! I'm a fan of their relationship throughout the series :D

| In my opinion, this movie was quite bad compared to the series. Mostly this is because the whole atmosphere in the movie was so different fom the light and fun series. The much darker feeling, along with the changed animation style really ruined the movie for me.
When viewed seperately from the series though, the movie is quite good. The story is a bit to complex and unclear at points, so you don't always know exactly what is going on.
The fact that I liked the series has no doubt influenced my opinion. Prince of Darkness is much better as a seperate movie than as a continuation of the series.

| This was definitely much better than the series. I found the humour to be well placed and not be overused as was the case with the series. That way the more serious aspect (prince of darkness) was a bit more atmospheric. Best of all Yurika has virtually no part in the movie. However this too was much too muddled and confused something similar to the series when it comes to plot. Most of the time I left it to the imagination of what was going on. I wish it could've been more straightforward. There was obviously a lot to tell and thus everything seemed rushed. However rushing it may have ruined the impact of the ending!
Still watch it if you've seen Martian Successor Nadesico TV Series otherwise stay away from it!
