Fullmetal Alchemist's manga form differs drastically from that of the anime. As a result, all FMA anime fans should definitely read this. Events are completely different, save for the few key events and deaths, only the basic background story remains consistent. However, how does the story compare? Is this difference better? Yes, it is safe to say so.

The biggest appeal of this manga is how the characters are better developed. They mull over their mistakes, past, and worries a lot more. Furthermore, the main characters also have a strong bond with each other. The entrance of the Eastern nation of Xing/Shin also changes things a lot - as it leads to a more integrated role of the homonculus. Although they are as sinister as ever with their hand in the affairs of many nations, the interaction with the main characters are much greater and significant: Instead of the perpetual cat and mouse game in the anime, the homonculi in FMA manga aren't as straight out evil. Their personalities are very different than the anime's and feel more human than monster. Scar, too, feels more human as shown through his reaction to the encounter with Winry and his journey with that girl from the Shin. Edward and Al both seem a lot more mature. The manga puts a lot more effort into Alphonse's feelings and thoughts about his lost body - which was barely touched upon in the anime. Altogether, these deeper characters make for a more engaging and interesting read.

Fullmetal Alchemist is also able to boast an impressive storyline and original world. The use of alchemy and the mysteries behind it are very impressive - mysteries that the anime fails to completely touch upon. What exactly are the doors? Why are there two? Where is Al's body? How does human transmutation come about - what exactly can occur? What is the source of the power? How come there are different varieties of alchemy? Who is the guy pulling the strings behind the homonculi? All these questions naturally pop up as Edward and Alphonse learn more through their dangerous travels.

The action never fails to amaze me as well - there are plenty of fights and the use of alchemy in these fights are a refreshing breeze amidst the hot swelter of repetitive and unoriginal action mangas. The fact that there are so many possibilities as well as limitations to battling with alchemy powers makes Fullmetal Alchemist a very impressive action manga.

I recommend FMA manga to anyone who enjoys journey/action mangas with strong characters and original storylines. I have read 66 chapters thus far, and I look forward to future releases.

I havent watched the anime and decided to read the manga. I'll stick with the manga though since it became one of my favorites. No wonder it is so popular, though in this case that occured because of the anime adaptation that followed. I didnt know there was initially a manga. I'm in chapter 60 and things start to get really interesting. The manga explains again how Winry's parents got murdered in more detail and the war they took part as well. While the anime already finished the manga has still a long way to go.

Overall I have to say this is a good title and using the notion of alchemy in such a way (either for the good of mankind or for war and human experiments)makes things even more exciting. Alchemists vs Homunculi battles are very tense and original. Generally there are impressive action and tragic scenes that keep the interest going.

Since the manga is far from finished I cant judge the story entirely. In the later volumes it gets better and hope it will remain so till the end.
I was fascinated by the world of FMA combining settings of the era prior to WWI with fantasy,sci-fi and alchemy elements. Very original.

As far as characters are concerned, they were very well represented. It is very innovative creating a 15 year old alchemist who can manipulate elements. And theres his 14 year old brother who in reality is an incarnated tincan.Their brotherly interaction works wonders Also their mechanic Winry is OK and not the annoying type of girl found in many mangas nowadays. Like the two brothers she has also a tragic past. Also the villains Lust and Pride are outstanding. overall good character developement for the rest too. More characters turn up so it will take some more chapters for them to fully develop, but till now character developement is good.

FMA is a classic and a pleasant reading if you like an original manga in a unique world. In the later chapters it tries to show the terrible aspects of war.Remains to be seen how events will turn out with the Philosophers Stone and Elric's and Alphonse's father.
