| Ippo is a high school student. During the day he goes to school like any normal high school student, and after school he goes home and helps his mum run a fishing boat rental business like a typical nice boy. Because of his timid nature, he often gets bullied by people from school. One day he has had enough and is determined to become strong... and he believes boxing holds the answers that he's looking for...
The premises of "Hajime no Ippo" is hardly original, in fact in many ways it's a stereotypical shounen anime. But for what it does, it does it consistantly well, and it avoids enough of the stereotypical pitfalls of the genre to deliver a genuinely good viewing experience.
The first thing I noticed about "Hajime no Ippo" is how bad the engrish is in the opening theme - the word horrific comes to mind as it utterly butchered the English language. The fansubs I was using made a heroic attempt to remedy the situation: "I want to dive lost mind" was translated into "I want to immerse myself in my dream till I can't think of anything else". "Why why why why, I want to dive! Feeling over" became "I don't know why, but I want to keep feeling passionate" etc. It was a commendable effort, but ultimately in vain as the translated end product still made little sense. Luckily this turned out to be a one off - the rest of the themes and BGM's are mostly very good, and no other songs were quite on the same level as that opening theme.
Opening theme aside, my initial impressions of this anime were pleasant. Despite the lack of originality, the execution was solid in general, and the main character's likeable, which is always a good start. Ippo starts off as a bit of an archetype character for the shounen genre - nice guy, weak, but filled with an enormous potential. His development is kind of archetypical as well, he just kind of becomes more determined etc... these are all the kind of things you would expect. However there are a couple of things about him that stood out for me. The first one is that despite his gains in strength through boxing, he did not betray the core qualities he had at the start - even though he was badly bullied at the beginning, the way he resolved the bullying matter was kind of unexpected and refreshing. It's that innocence of his that stubbornly persists through the entire series that makes him so endearing. Another thing that stood out was the relationship he had with his mother. Their interaction was heart warming and genuine, but not overly done (like in fruits basket), and provided some of the most moving scenes in the series.
As you would expect from this type of anime, the series does gain momentum as it goes on. The fights play their parts well. Screen time involving fights is often put to good use and split between building up tension before matches and the fighting itself. The matches, partially thanks to being competently built up, do pack the punch (*rim shot*) that's expected from them. They're not overly dragged out either, most of them finishing within 2 episodes (the later ones do last longer, but that can be explained away because those fights are fought over more rounds than the early ones). I do have a couple of gripes in this area though. The first one is that Ippo's style of fighting - he's a hard puncher. This is a plot device that sets him up to win a lot of matches through comebacks that are so typical of shounen anime - he'll be there taking a battering, but with one punch he can suddenly turn the tables. The whole thing feels a bit too cheap and contrived as a result. The other thing is the predictable outcomes of the matches. Once you've seen the first few fights, you can pretty much start to guess correctly the results of the later fights. Though the matches themselves are quite exciting, seeing the result you expect almost every time does put a dampener on things.
Outside the fights, the daily pleasantries and humour provides a nice turn of pace. The humour, though somewhat crude, did grow on me quite a bit (or maybe it just got funnier as it went on), and I was finding some of it (especially Aoki's antics) nothing short of hilarious. Though these are mere decorations for an anime like this, they do serve an important role in both character development and preventing the show from becoming too monotonous. And in some ways, this is one of the telling reasons why "Hajime no Ippo" is such a good show despite being a typical shounen - it avoids the classic shounen pitfall by not getting bogged down by continous bouts. A few poignant fights may provide the highlights, but at the end of the day, it's the story and characters that's the adhesive which holds everything together. Luckily, the creators realise this, and did set aside a healthy amount of time to develop those aspects.
Whilst not really outstanding or breaking the mould in any way, "Hajime no Ippo" is a very solid series. I might not recommend this to people wary of long shounen series, and I do think the ratings for it on animenfo is a little too high, but it's still a very good show in its own right. It's a textbook example of a typical shounen done right.

| Note: This review applies to Hajime no Ippo TV series and its movies.
Hajime no Ippo is a wonderful shounen show, so far amongst the best fighting anime I have ever seen, and sadly I have seen most of them already. It's always fun to observe someone to rise from pretty much zero to the stars. Ippo starts as a complete newbie to boxing, he knows no techniques, no nothing, the only things he possesses is his hard work and strong will. And the viewer has the pleasure to experience the results of Ippo's hard work to the max. Heh, I have even joined the gym after being inspired by this show... not for long though.
Marvelous fights aren't the only thing that make Hajime no Ippo good. Characters and their ideals, whoa, I love when shounen shows develop their side characters so well that you even get confused as to who would you really like to win in the fights. Everyone have their ideals, everyone work hard, everyone wants to win, but the winner is always one. However, to feel pity for one's opponents is not only a weakness, but rude as well. The one who wins, the one who defeats, he is forced to carry on the dreams of his beaten rivals. That's why Hajime no Ippo is so fun to watch, you never root for the main character to win, because his opponents are bad guys, no, in Hajime no Ippo everyone's a good guy, it's just the strength of will that wins. You root for characters and their inner strength. Kind of similar to Rurouni Kenshin TV, though eons away from its level of complexity.
Like boxing? Like fighting? If yes, Hajime no Ippo should be on the top of your to-watch list. And even for those who don't, characters are done well enough to carry the show by themselves even if the watcher is not interested in boxing itself that much.

| Summary: The best Anime to date.
-Was at a real loss of a satisfactory Anime that could topple the monster of an Anime creation I discovered: Death Note. All Anime seemed to become average after that, until I discovered - Hajime no Ippo.
Not only did it deliver a non-extinguishable top-notch performance with every episode(which I feared just as with Death Note that it would soon subside like many anime), -but it delivered top-notch best comedy I have ever come across in an anime! Second to it only comes Yu Yu Hakusho(dubbed), followed by Rourin Kenshin in the challenge of comedy.
Enjoyment: From the thrilling and adrenaline-raising fights to the life-taking comedy laughter, to the emotions you start feeling for each characters. You'll start loving boxing after watching this.
In the end -better wear your boxing gloves, cuz you in for a hell of an experience! I recommend this to all (but be warned: contains manly cheap jokes, and nudity topic of discussion and pictures)

| jime no Ippo is tTHE best anime series and definitely be part of my favorites. In a way it is similar to Slam Dunk, the main character, Ippo, is a beginner in boxing and like SD its not so much about being a player but about overcoming obstacles in life. I don`t know why I find a strong liking in plots like this. The anime also teaches you a think or two about boxing, its profession, history and techniques.
The story is nice, though sometimes it makes you want to side with the opponent since their motivation for winning is much greater than the main character himself. The main character and his never give up attitude let him win most of his matches, but it doesn`t mean the results of the matches would be predictable. There are times when you feel there is equal chance that the opponent might win. Reason and motivation are an important factor in the series, no one is really made out to be a villain.
The story is also fast-paced, not so many filler episodes, although this is the only anime I hunger for filler episodes since I find them really funny. The tension and excitement during matches is done well, more of like the realism I felt when I watched Slam Dunk. You really want to watch the next episode after another. It`s not like other animes where the only final ten episodes will really leave you hanging for more. The music blended well in every winning moment.
The `Extra Round: Mashiba vs. Kimura` made me think lots of things. Ippo is trained a lot, given advice, pampered in a sense by the coach while he never helped Kimura on his title match. Is it because one is really born with talent and one tends to favor it over others? Or is it because of the record, Kimura having losses here and there. I really find it unfair. But on this episode I was siding all the way with Mashiba, even though Kimura is from the same gym as Ippo, trained hard by himself etc.

| I was not very found of this animation. Although, it had some great fighting visual effects and scenes where I could not stop laughing, but the plot was boring. After a 20 or 30 episodes, the plot began repeating itself: the guy goes to the fight, gets almost beat up to unconsiousness, then remembers some kind of person who said that he/she believes in him, gets up, then follows 10 min of a crappy drama and finally he beats the crap out of the opponent with his "fighing spirit". Also, I did not like that only the main character's fight were shown in detail, while his friends fights seemd to end up in a split of the second without any 'dramatic' combacksl or other 'fighing spirit' effects. Because of this agravating monotonic plot I could not enjoy this anime as much as I wanted to and I could not give a good reviews toward story, enjoyment, value and animation rating. In my point of view, perfect story is the base for the previously named animation components. If there is no good story in anime, it's not possible to enjoy or appreciate an anime. Therefore, an animetion in general decreases in value as well. Takamura's character was developed quite nicely, but the main character looked like a brainless, wissy-wussy child. No traits of personality, just a casual good boy image. The sound effects mached well with the fighting scenes and sometimes were of the grandioso effect; therefoer, I gave the sound category 9 points.

| I've known about this series for years but never got around to watching it until recently.
Positives:
+Disarmingly hillarious! It's one of the funniest anime series I've ever watched.
+A very nice story about a unique main character bringing its audience into the world of boxing.
+Enjoyable throughout the entire 76 episodes. For the most part.
Negatives:
-The animation for a 2000 anime is barely average.
-The music is not the greatest but I found fitting occasionally.
-The way Ippo wins gets repetitive and the matches start getting old after episode 26 or so.
-As likable as Ippo is, he takes "nice guy" to the extreme which eventually gets annoying.
Overall, its a great series that I would love to own if it wasnt so darn expensive in the states. About 450$ for the complete set.

| Since I'm a sports fan this anime must get a high score
One of the greatest animes of all time
Ippo is a young boy who has been raised in a single parent household. He has always been bullied, but shrugs it off because he doesn't like getting into trouble...that is, until he discovers Boxing!! Through all the battles and hardships Ippo sets out on the path to find out what true strength really is.
The music really fits perfectly with this anime.

| Ippo was a really fun anime to watch, especially for someone like me who like boxing. I had watched this anime in regards of someone who recommended it to me and quite frankly i'm well- fortunate for it. Although at some point the story did let me out a little bit.
The characters were great but that however wouldnt include the main character, Ippo. Every boxer are following a dreAM, basically to what led them to be a boxer. Whether it's for their mom or they want to prove something for themselves. Which is where Ippo fall kinda short because his goal is way insignificant when comparing to the other boxer. He is just doing it for pure fun while others are struggling dearly to reach their dreams.
For a character i would like that would be Hiyata. He's been boxing since he was a little kid, shadowing his father steps. He is basically Ippo rival and that's that.
Aside that the animatuion is fairly great, though everyone including the women apparently all look fat. Their cheecks bones are well-expanded and it's quite clear to see that. The frames they used f while in action-mode are also great and everything is a great perfomance.
The soundtracks are also perfect. I love The opening song and it was really motivating altogether to the story.
I really recommend this anime if you like boxing and also basically if you like action anime.

| Why am I reviewing this? Because some people are unfairly reviewing it, thus plenty of 9+ reviews and 5- reviews. Let's be fair and partial on each area of this series and see what it's really made of, shall we? It's a long review, but I hit everything that seemed worth it.

| Hajime no Ippo has been out there for a while. I feel like a caveman for not noticing it until now. What makes Ippo one of my more favored anime is its story and characters.
Animation - The animation is not flawless. You can notice that the normal animation is a tad dated. However, the fight sequences and animations are superb.
Sound - The music was rather good. The voice acting was good as well. However, Ippo can get annoying when he keeps saying "Miyata-kun" over and over.
Story - One of the more original stories. It take upon that path of Rocky or Cinderella Man. Speaks of the underdog, Ippo, becoming a champion through hard-work and will power. The only lacking portion of the anime was a romance between Ippo and Kumi. Yes it is a fighting anime. Nevertheless a few romance sequences to help develop the characters' relationship wouldn't hurt.
Character - The cast ranges from the casual to the bizarre (Mishiba). Kimura, Aoki, and Takamura are there to be a comic relief, and to say the truth, they pull it off quite well. Lastly, the main character, Ippo. There was true development throughout his motives, intentions, and characteristic. From being the prey of bullies to a fierce fighter.
I thoroughly enjoyed the anime. One of the great animes out there, sport-base or not. Though most of the fights are predictable as people mentioned. However, it never stop being entertaining to see each fighter's unique skills and styles. Definitely worth a watch.

| hajime no ippo is about a boy that is bullied in school because of his fishy odor he get by working in the family fishing shop. one time while getting bullied again takamura crosses his way and treats his wounds in the boxing gym. when he tells ippo to punch just once against the sand bag he discovers the incredible power ippo has. makounuchi ippo joins the gym and becomes a great boxer.
the animation is a bit old-fashioned but still it doesnt matter to me much. the sound is good but sometimes during the fights it becomes a bit monotone.
the biggest plus is the fantastic characters in hajime no ippo. ippo is a loser with a big dick and is always made fun of because of it. takamura is the leader of the group. none dares to provoke him. aoki is the strange guy that is an average boxer and will never become a champion. (i read the manga so i can tell you he will never be champion). ippos coach is an old guy that knows just everything about boxing. he cares a lot for ippo.
hajime no ippo is funny and tensive. what more could you expect. i thinkthe best sports anime out there!!!

The anime made me to respect boxers in real life after watching this series to the end.

| Those people who gave such high scores for this series are just fans of boxing, and that doesn't mean that this series is good as they claim it to be.
Hajime no Ippo is one of the most overrated series ever. It was soo shocking to find this anime in the top 25.
First of all, I'm not a fan of boxing, I hate it actually, but that doesn't really matter because I love Slam Dunk without being a fan of basketball. Maybe this didn't appeal to me as there is not much comedy, well actualy there some are but I don't find them funny and I don't like dirty jokes. Second, I don't like voilence, not that I don't watch violent animes, but here the characters fight either because of money or for prestige, so it doesn't have that effect and I didn't care whether Ippo will win or lose.
More of my bashing, please read (*_*)

| Ah, Hajime no Ippo, Also called FIGHTING SPIRIT, it's a great sports anime. The best of all time IMO, and standalone, it's one of the most amazing anime series ever. All the 76 episodes were awesome, and i want more (As the manga goes on)
Yes, the fights are predictable, but no way they are boring. But sometimes fights get repetitive (Ippo is falling, then wakes up and crushes the oponent)
The animations is fair enough, but i thought i was seeing an old anime, as a matter of fact it was released on 2000, so the animation is a low point.
The story is also predictable, but is deep enough for a sports anime. The characters are loveable, every one of them. From the boxers, to the oponents, even Ryo Mashiba has a lot of presence.
I enjoyed this anime a lot. It's long enough, and i wanted a little more... it's one of the best series of all time, and it's not that mainstream... not that i care much about it!

| After watching few episodes of Hajime No ippo I was really impressed. It seemed to be very entertaining anime and I especially liked the old-style animation. Also the characters were very likable.
But the problem with this anime is that it just becomes way too predictable and childish. I wasn't really expecting any blowing plot twists for this kind of anime , but all the tension is lost when you always know ippo is going to beat the crap out of his opponent. Hikaru no Go is superior compared to this.

| This to me, is like a Hikaru no Go of "boxing" and it certainly delivers the punches! This is one of the better animes I've seen lately but probably not the best. The start of the series was near perfect if not perfect. However, it became pretty repetitive later on, as the fights are overly exaggerated and there was only so much things they could do with the small ring. So it loses some points here.
Unfortunately I didn't really see the "underdog" impression of Ippo. Sure he was a weak person who got bullied often but he did have sheer power and strength from the start which meant that he had a bright boxing career from the get-go. However, take a look at his emotional side and you see a different story - he becomes more powerful emotionally and spiritually which was entertaining to see and watch. Yet, he still has relationship problems :)
The animation seemed pretty dodgy and old but you find out later on it totally suits the anime so it rates pretty good with other anime. The sound is good but again got repetitive when they didn't change the tunes much throughout the whole 70 or so episodes. Overall, I thoroughly enjoyed this series and it lives up to its expectations.

| This is without a doubt the best sports anime ever made. Take your typical loser guy, watch him transform into a fearsome boxer. Genius!
Animation feels a bit dated but still very good. Action is crisp and fights are intense.
Sound is great. I could literally feel every punch and the commentary during fights adds to the experience.
The story basically chronicles the growth of Ippo as a fighter and also the fights of his friends and rivals. There is alot of buildup for each fight. The fighters are given adequate development to show what's at stake for them and their reasons for fighting. The way they show Ippo's intense training before a fight and how they develope a strategy to beat a seemingly invincible foe really adds to the emotion. The fights themselves, as expected, are intense to the core. There aren't any flashbacks or stop to talk stuff like in dbz, naruto, or bleach. All that is done before the fights, so no distractions, the fight takes center stage. Haha, imagine stopping to tell your opponent what a hard life you've had in middle of the fight, lmao.
Each character is unique and memorable, having their own backstory and goals. Ippo's gym buddies are outrageously perverted and hilarious, especially Takamura. But put him in the ring and he is all business. Ippo also has a developing relationship with Kumi but there are some things standing in their way (wait til you meet her brother, lol).
So how good is the anime? Well, I've read the manga and it is excellent. The anime is better. Highly recommended if you enjoy intense fights with alot of emotion.

| The first word that comes to mind when describing this series? Fun. Pure, rocksolid fun. You follow the life of Ippo, a high school student who gets bullied at school for being socially awkward. His life takes a turn for the better as he bumps into the national middleweight boxing champion Takamura and discovers the empowering world of professional boxing.
The series is filled with great characters, superb action, fun humour and is overall an excellent watch.
