| A great end-of-the-world showdown where the earth defense forces really are outgunned, no question. Told in essentially two halves, the first half is a good old ice-water in the veins faceoff between the upstart deputy commander of the Argo who shirks his order to stand down his hijacking the Argo, a seafaring, vintage battleship fitted for space travel, and the overall fleet commander, whose job is to see the Argo updated with full computer control at the expense of living crew. If upstart Derek Wildstar succeeds, he will take the Argo into space to investigate an alien warning message to Earth. In the second half, there's an equally excellent, focused story of the Argo's pilot, Mark Venture, and the alien messenger girl, Trelayna, who fall in love and risk all for each other in fateful, resulting encounters with the wildly superior invasion force of the Comet Empire.
